I don't think that Dream Theater will ever have to kind of appeal.
Many people will not admit to the musicianship of Dream Theater (Hell,
I've met many that think that Mike Pornoy has no rhythm... we know
they're wrong)... I've shown, played, even deciphered many things to
others and they reject the talent as merely my taste in music. They'll
even argue that the music of AC/DC shows just as much talent. Dream
Theater will always be somewhat of a habanero sauce... A developed taste
that most are too afraid to attempt to stomach and even fewer are
    equipped to digest.
I believe that most U.S. newpapers are written at somewhere near the
6th grade level (or least that was a "report" a few years ago). If we
read in school for 12 years (those that graduate) but only get music as
an optional course, then at what level must most music for the airwaves
be written? Sure, with exposure many may come around, but they will be
the type that in the past have uttered "I like Queensryche. That song
    'Silent Lucidity' is awesome!"
But to answer the question, I think I would prefer to have a 14 year
old next to me that acted reasonably then to have to endure the jerk
that decided through the whole Chicago show that he was going "air drum"
along with Mike Portnoy and that he had to room to duplicate such an
event--- At times clubbing my disabled wife. Godd thing she had nails as
sharp as talons. I wonder if he walked away with any concept of just how
    stupidly he acted.

P.S.----- Hey dude, if you're on the list.... How's that arm?

First time I heard DT was in around '97 or '98, but it was at the time waay to extraordinary and progressive for me. A while after LSfNY came out, I gave them a another chance, bought the triple album and immediately fell in love. I still think the versions of Metropolis 2 and ACoS on that set are better than the original recorded versions. So now it's been almost three years and I own every album they've put out and they're one of the best bands in the world IMHO. Still haven't seen them live tho...
