I was at a little party tonight and there was a surf rock / ventures tribute
    band playing in
the basement. Most of the guys were older, except the drummers. One was the
regular drummer, who was kinda the stereotypical 30 yr old rock-star wanna
be who took himself a little too seriously. The other was the 15 yr old son
(still had braces) of one of the guitarists and was just sitting in for the
evening - he was quite good.

Anyways, I was talking to the older drummer, who tried to get a little
chatty (and also a bit arrogant) w/ the younger drummer. Older drummer
points out that the kid plays some typical modern rock stuff w/ his high
    school buddies.

The kid then says, "yeah, but we try to play some technical stuff, too. Have
you ever heard of Dream Theater?" :-)

Granted, he thought 6DOIT was better than Awake, but hey, nobody's perfect.
    :-)

    -Dan.

    Hey all,

I'm going to attend the S-X concert in Belgium at the end of March, and
since they open for Stratovarius I was wondering if their last album is
any good. I have Visions and Dreamspace, but I can't say that I'm a
huge fan. So how about Infinite? And anyone got a preview of Elements 1
    yet?

Second, like every year or so, I gave WDADU another spin. I know not
everyone is particularly fond of Charlie's singing (to say the least)
but I always kinda liked him. So my pseudo-poll-like question is: on
what song does Charlie annoy you the least? Or formulated more
positively, what song kicks ass *because* of Charlie Dominici?

My pick: LFAGA: not *only* high-pitched vocals, and nice variation..

    Cheers

    Peter

Although his voice sucks ass, Charlie used to write some pretty damn
    good vocal melodies.
Take "The Killing Hand" for example. In my opinion, every change James
has applied to this song only ruined it for me. The version I like the
most is the one that sticks to the original - AH/TKH from the Live at
    the Marquee

Definitely agree with you on the vocal melodies... (Only a matter of
time) But you lost me on the TKH stuff. Are you talking bootleg
versions? I only know two recorded Killing Hands: WDADU and Live at the
Marquee. So where did KJLB ruin it for you then?

On another note, to me, the lyrics to WDADU are in a completely
different style than anything they've done afterwards. Long
sentences... almost sung storytelling. Couldn't be because of CD
because he didn't write any of the lyrics right?

    Hello,

Log time ago, I remember reading on this list that Mr. Portnoy was thinking
of start releasing official bootlegs to be sold in the official web site.

Does anybody remember that?? Can anyone tell me why they don't do that?? Is
there anything related to record company permission??

IMO, that would be a great idea. One or even two live albuns per tour, with
different set lists (as they did on the last tour) would make bootlegs
    totally obsolete.

    Opinions???

    Alex

This exact question was just answered by Mike Portnoy in the latest Dream
Theater Fan Club newsletter (which is EXCELLENT and HIGHLY RECOMMENDED,
    BTW). The answer was:

    "It's a matter of management sorting out the technicalities with the label;
it's a big waiting game...It's in the hands of the record companies and
management. So we'll just continue to wait."

That's not the entire quote, but you get the idea.
