Nope! Jumpin' John, from Ozric Tentacles :)

How 'bout the H3 tour (hammer-dulcimer), with Lisa Gerrard from Dead Can
Dance, and......uh.......... Well, okay, we'll make it a long solo

I have these three and absolutely love them. In fact, In Absentia gets my best-of-2002 award, hands down.

You can't fail with Gordian Knot; their stuff is amazing in my book.

I haven't heard the other stuff, but I'd like to. So basically I'm going to go with the others who said just buy it all. :)

Man.. I was a member of Columbia House for about 3 years and they had pretty decent prices on their cassettes and CDs, but the shipping and tax charges on each item you ordered was outrageous. That's where they stuck it to ya.

This would be my order of priority (of the ones I've heard, of course):

Planet X - Moon Babies Pain of Salvation - Remedy Lane Gordian Knot - Emergent (haven't heard this one, but I can bet it's as good as the first) Platypus - Ice Cycles Porcupine Tree - In absentia Meshuggah - Nothing

And another thing... I recently got a copy of Andy West with Rama - Rama 1 and it's a very good cd. Mike Portnoy plays drums on 2 tracks, and does a pretty good job. I still think he doesn't have a jazz feel to his playing, which he needed more of on those tracks since the music inclines towards the fusion side, but I'm just going to have to live with that. What puzzles me is that this cd was released on Magna Carta, for whom Portnoy said he would never record again. So what's the deal?

    ------------------------------

Alexis asked: What puzzles me is that this cd was released on Magna Carta, for whom Portnoy said he would never record again. So what's the deal?

Here's what Portnoy had to say about this on his messageboard: ---------------- Unfortunately, Andy West gave this release to Magna Carta *after* I did my tracks.... I asked him to remove my name from the credits which he and the label refused to do (for obvious reasons...) That is why I (and MP.COM and DT.NET and the DT fanzines) have not been promoting this CD.

It's a shame that Andy has had to suffer as a result of this because he is a cool guy, but I refuse to support MC any further (both financially and creatively)...

Download my 2 tracks off of KaZaa or another file sharing service as I did lay down some cool shit on these tracks...but I am personally trying to avoid those crooks at Magna Carta from making another single penny off of my name as I had to pay them **ALOT** of money in order to get my LDT DVD released for the fans....

    MP ----------------

Also, Luis, you probably won't run into most of the proggier releases on your list at most music stores in the States. Most of those albums you listed rarely make it to regular shops here. You may be better off ordering them online - perhaps have them shipped to where you'll be staying.

Well, depending in where you are going in the US, you will have variable success at finding any of these discs in actual stores. I get most of my music online, and I live right near NYC.

But also partially I'm too lazy to drive into the city every time I want music :)

Anyway, out of your list, the only one I am familiar with is Pain of Salvation's Remedy Lane, and like others already have, I would *highly* recommend this disc. One of the best, if not the best, recent releases IMO. As a matter of fact, I actually brought that one in to work today... what a coincidence :)

Planet X also is pretty cool (I've heard a couple of songs but don't own any of their discs), although I can't comment on that album in particular.

Alex, who had the dubious pleasure of seeing a thermometer outside my house this morning read 0 degrees Fahrenheit. Brrr!

That's what I don't like. And I never said I like the version with CD singing, I just like the vocal melodies he wrote for it, as opposed to the modifications JLB has made in the 96' version and later ones.

Some might consider this blasphemy, but Remedy Lane actually dropped Awake from the head of my favorite albums list and I know consider it the most perfect album ever. Seriously. I mean it music-wise, lyric-wise and production-wise. The only flaw I find in it is that its mix is very dense. However, I can't imagine a different way to mix that album while preserving its awesome sound so I can't really say it's a flaw.

For those of you that still haven't listened to PoS: do yourself a favor and get a copy of Remedy Lane.

    Hello Jammers:

I will make a trip to the US in a week and I save some money to buy some good Prog or prog oriented CDs, and I was thinkin' about some, but to be honest, there are some bands that I never have hear before. Some bands are well reviewed in this list by you but I was thinkin' by myself in some titles like:

Pain of Salvation - Remedy Lane

Sorry, I can't let this one go. For those who still haven't heard it, SAMPLE it first. Trust me. POS is an interesting band, no doubt, but as some are prone to say, your mileage may vary. A few years ago I went out and bought every POS album available at the time and my ears/brain couldn't believe the abuse I put them through. To say the least, POS didn't appeal to me at all. I'd hate it to happen to anyone else. SAMPLE before you buy.

I can attest to this as well. One song on POS's "The Perfect Element" caught me, but the rest of the album was not anything I'd keep for any length of time. If you can, borrow POS from a friend and listen carefully.

I think all PoS albums are worth a good listen. Perfect Element still is my fave, One Hour and Remedy Lane are sorta tied for second place, and in third is Entropia. Entropia is great, but is more busy and all over the place than their other, more organized albums. Now I'm waitin for perfect element part II... ----- Original Message ----- From: Mira Yallin To: Multiple recipients of list Sent: Thursday, January 23, 2003 4:09 PM Subject: RE: Recommendations from Ytsejammers

According to the Iced Earth website www.icedearth.com , they have jumped ship and are now on SPV/Steamhammer records. This may be old news to some but I found it to be interesting. Jon Schaffer whines so much about not being a success in the States and then he signs with a label that isn't strong in the States . . .or at least not as strong as CenturyMedia. Whatever.
