Sorry for the late review of Saturday's FW/QR/DT show. The 'Jam comes to my
work email, and I wasn't going in to the office on Sunday just to write
about the show. :) We left Naperville about 6:00PM, but traffic on the
Eisenhower bogged down and we didn't arrive at the Aragon Ballroom until
8:00PM. Let me just say this about the Aragon - it's a beautiful place to
see a concert, inside it has the look of a Spanish castle courtyard complete
with battlements on three sides and the stage at the front. Two huge stacks
are suspended from the ceiling on either side of the stage, we just to the
right of center stage about thirty feet from the front and the sound was
incredible.
Unfortunately we missed Fates Warning due to the traffic, and walked in just
as Queensryche was taking the stage. This was my first time seeing QR live,
and they sounded good enough although my buddy who has seen them a few times
remarked later that the new guitarists weren't up to the level of a Chris
DeGarmo. QR played a lot of older stuff from "The Warning" and "Operation:
Mindcrime", as well as two from "Empire" and one or two newer songs I didn't
recognize. The last QR album I bought was "Hear in the Now Frontier" and
thankfully they didn't play any of the crap from that sorry excuse for a
prog album. All in all they sounded pretty good, Geoff Tate still has some
powerful pipes - although he kind of had a Rob Halford look going on with
the bald hair and leather coat.
Dream Theater kicked all ass as usual. They opened with "Metropolis, Part
One" which got the crowd going wild. Portnoy kept gesturing to the audience
and touching his heart, sort of like Sammy Sosa does when he hits a home run
though there is surely no cork in Mike's drumsticks. "Another Day", "The
Glass Prison", "A Mind Beside Itself", and "Only A Matter Of Time"... about
this point I quit keeping track because I had slammed about 6 beers already.
Suffice to say they were mind-boggling tight and sounded phenomenal. I was
a little disappointed at the shortness of their individual set, but I guess
Queensryche went a little long. Anyway they finished up their set and
thanked the crowd, took bows to wild applause.
The two-band finale was quite impressive. QR and DT started with Pink
Floyd's "Comfortably Numb", with LaBrie and Tate going back and forth on
lead vocals. Then on to "Peruvian Skies" with Tate on lead and LaBrie
backing. Then "Take Hold Of The Flame" with LaBrie on lead and Tate on
backing, finally finishing off the encore set with the Who's "Won't Get
Fooled Again". I got the feeling the guys from DT were playing down to QR's
level, although the drum jamming between Portnoy and Rockenfield was very
cool on both sides.
After the show our ears and heads were buzzing, so we sojourned to Philly's
Best for some awesome cheese steaks and ran into some DT fans we had met at
the same restaurant a couple of shows ago when DT was playing at the Vic
Theater down the street. Not sure if they are Ytsejammers, but if they are
reading this I say "ROCK ON!"

The last time I saw DT (Feb. 2002) I had that happen too. I was in the
front row right next to the speaker and my left ear was messed up pretty
good. It rang for about a week and then was plugged up on and off for
almost six months. I got my ears checked in August and they told me I had
some noise induced hearing loss. My ears have gone back to normal now, but
I am definitley going to wear ear plugs from now on. Even if the music at a
concert isn't so loud that it hurts your ears, it is still doing damage. I
would recommend that if you frequently go to concerts that you should
invest in a good pair of earplugs. I got some free through my school that
are specifically made so that music is not distorted. They work pretty
well. The ones I got are from http://www.etymotic.com

I want to consult something with you people. On
saturday night I went to see a band at a club, and the
music was quite loud as always. It wasn't the loudest
I've ever heard, but it was quite loud. That night I
didn't wear any earplugs (the music wasn't loud enough
to make me feel like I was probably harming my ears),
so when I left the place my ears were ringing (which
has happened to me before whenever I've been listening
to loud music). But I feel like the ringing this time
might be different, because it hasn't gone away. I'm
expecting it to go away sometime, but it hasn't
disappeared yet. The other times my ears have rung
like that, the ringing has disappeared. I really hope
it does go away. Am I being naive in thinking that it
will go away? Or did I damage my hearing on saturday
night and the ringing will forever be there? I've
almost always protected myself against loud music, so
it's not like this was the result of constant
punishment to my ears. I guess I'll just have to wait
and see what happens. I mean, the ringing isn't
unbearably loud, but it bothers me because I want it
to be gone.

Hi!
I believe they ship Priority in the US for orders of three CDs and up. I
shop regularly there and their service is top quality.
I live in Argentina, so the cost of shipping is quite an issue, but their
low rates are really a bargain -even via UPS it is worth it (two days to get
CDs from Salt Lake City to Buenos Aires, against any time from two weeks to
two months).
Cheers,

Some more questions to ask:
Is this ringing more like a very light amount of pressure than a
sound or noise?
Does it seem to be affected when you yawn, cough or sneeze?
Does it sound kinda like when you have a head cold and your voice
echos in your ears.

The plugs help ensure you'll be able to listen to music some other day. If
your plugs are decent enough, there's surprisingly little difference in
sound quality. I've used wax ones for the past few years and even with
them, it's very easy to forget you have them in.

Brian's right. Concerts are far too loud nowadays (well, I suppose
they've ALWAYS been too loud). A good set of earplugs will reduce the
volume without affecting the frequency response, thus ensuring that your
ears aren't damaged by the sheer loudness and that you still get the
quality that the sound guys are trying to give you.
Of course, that wouldn't have helped when I saw DT in Columbus a few weeks
ago. They had the worst sound I've ever heard from a band, but I think
part of that may be because I was on the floor and directly in front of a
speaker cabinet. Still, the mix seemed awful, and while I don't know what
it sounded like out on the grass, I can't imagine it sounded much better.

Exactly. It's not a loud noise, but it bothers me because I know I could have damaged my hearing.

That's what I'm afraid of. And it pisses me off because I know I should protect my ears, yet didn't do it that time.

These days I've had that noise in my ears, I've craved for some kind of noise all the time in order to cover up the sound. If it doesn't go away, I'll get used to it, but I'll be disappointed with myself for having allowed it to happen.

I hope it does go away gradually. I still haven't lost my hope. And funny you said that about a Rush concert, because I had that exact same experience the only time I've seen them. That's probably the loudest concert I can recall.

In retrospect, it was "The Great Debate" and not "The Glass Prison" that DT
played off of 6DOIT in Chicago Saturday night...
