    hey there jammers,
i was digging through some old jams that i had
stockpiled/forgotten to erase, and stumbled on mention of a 10 page
research paper that someone on this list did concerning US copyright law.
now, i don't have the original post stating the name of the person who did
the research paper, but i do have a reply in which both steve chew &
myself both wanted to track this paper down, be it posted on a website, or
through email. well, we (at least i) never wound up hearing any more
about it, & now i find myself in a position where the information found in
this paper could really prove useful on several fronts. sooooo, if the
person who did this paper (it was about a year ago exactly) is still on
the jam, could you please drop me a private reply. i'd really like to
hear more. chew, i don't suppose you even remember this, but if you do,
let me know just so i can assure myself i'm not going crazy here. thanks.

Check your copyright law. Graham is correct, you don't have the legal RIGHT to make copies of copyrighted material, you DO have the DEFENSE of Fair Use if you do somehow find a way to copy it.

Before you reply, please do a minute or two of research. I just did a 10 page research paper on Copyright Law. I'm certain of this.

Again, this only pertains to US copyright law.

Like hell. Under current law, RIAA members get a few cents per blank CD, DAT, or video media sold as a royalty against the possibility that someone will backup their content to such blank media. If they have now decided to remove the option to even make a backup media (and, for CDs protected like 6DOIT, the ability to even play the damn thing in certain car stereos or through certain media players), then they no longer have the right to collect those royalties. Since they are still collecting those royalties, they are _obligated_ to make sure that their content-distributed media of choice _can_ be backed up by the consumer, ie, me.
