So that guy from Mountain Goats, John Darnielle, happens to be a fan of
various flavors of metal. One of those flavors happens to be that of
Opeth. Here's a bit of what he has to say about them:

    Fellow Ytsejammers,

Most of the time I just read through the jam digests, but I've just heard a
band I gotta recommend to you all. It's a swedish progressive rock act named
    .. A.C.T.

It's not progressive metal, but from time to time you can hear DT
influences, especially in the intrumental parts of their music. It sounds a
lot like ELO, Saga, and ... I don't know. With excellent musicians and very
good lead singers (I think there are three of 'em) theeir music is very
impressive. A lot of keybords, song harmonies, tons of melody, ... try it
    out!

Their new album The Final Act is a concept album about a building! Again ...
    try it out!

    /Peter

Funny how you guys mention Ice Age. These last two days I've been listening to their cd Liberation, which is great (as well as the Great Divide). I was actually wondering if they had ever played live and, if not, why. And now look at the news that pop up. Pretty cool, I must say. I wish I could go see them...

Well, on tuesday I saw Metallica's Icon on MTV, and I must say it was quite pathetic. The cover versions performed by Korn and Snoop Dog were a complete disgrace, while the rest of the other bands were just ok (I think the best one was Limp Bizkit, and Jim Breuer was great, but that wasn't a cover). And then came Metallica. Their performance wasn't top notch, but it was pretty good. The song selection for the medley was quite good. And the new song was sounding well until stupid MTV cut it. There might be some hope with their new album. Oh, and the documentaries were very good. And Robert Trujillo kicks ass (I guess this means goodbye to him playing in Infectious Grooves any more :-(

And what do you guys think of Portnoy's statement that Dream Theater's new album will be a more classic metal oriented one, a la Master of Puppets and Number of the Beast? IMO, that could be a double edged sword. I mean, imagine DT writing progressive music that's heavier and meaner than their previous works. Wow, that could be great. But, imagine if they compromise complexity for the classic metal sound... I wouldn't want that. We'll see what happens.
