AMEN! I'm a sheep in that sense. I preordered mine a while back and I can't
wait to listen to it. I'm optimistic it'll be great (or, at least, have moments
    of greatness). We'll see.

containing TOT as shipped yesterday and already out for delivery!!!!! It
will be on my doorstep when I get home from work tonight. THIS IS GONNA

    Dude,

    I don't see how it's a matter of being a sheep.

Whether the new Machine Head album gets great reviews or bad reviews, I'm
not going to buy it because I'm not interested in that style of music.

The last DT album I really, wholly enjoyed was FII, which I seem to remember
was flamed to a well-done crisp by certain quarters of this list on its
release. I bought Scenes because I'm a DT fan, and hated it - and said so
here.I bought 6 Degress because I'm a DT fan, and while it was a LOT better
than Scenes, there were several fairly major problems with that album.
Really, I think they've gone well beyond the point of expecting people to
buy anything they put out based on goodwill from I&W, Awake, ACoS and FII,
on the merits of which I bought their last two albums without hesitation.

Goodwill alone will not persuade me to go out and buy this album. So
something else will - like whether it's an album in a genre I like. Which,
it also turns out, is a problem.

I'm not basing my decision of whether or not to buy the album based on
people's reviews of how good or bad a technical metal album Train of Thought
is - I'm basing it on the fact that everyone is indicating that it's a
technical metal album. I didn't become a Dream Theater fan and buy Dream
Theater albums for six years to hear technical metal, I bought Dream Theater
and related albums to hear progressive rock. Of late, they only seem
interested in making that music in side projects like Transatlantic (which
is excellent) and Feeding the Wheel (which is also excellent).

Genre, not content, is what is at stake here. You wouldn't go out and buy
the new J-LO album just because it had good reviews, because that's not a
genre of music you're interested in. Likewise, I won't be purchasing the new
Machine Head album because however good a thrash metal album it may be, I
lost interest in hearing Ride The Lightning clones years ago - it's not my
genre. Much the same process is behind not rushing out with any haste to buy
the new DT album. And the information I'm getting isn't from critics - it's
from Dream Theater fans, people who more3 than anyone else are inclined to
give this album the benefit of the doubt. I'd like to give it the benefit of
the doubt, I'd love to believe that "As I Am" is hugely unrepresentative of
the rest of the album" - but all the indications from FANS, not from
critics, from FANS - is that it's fairly representative.

When they come out with a prog rock album, I'll buy it and sing its praises
most fullsomely. When they release a technical metal album, I probably won't.

Are you serious? Geez... those bastards somehow manage to lie to me about
when they ship items (they shipped it three days AFTER they said it was
mailed....), break the case on BOTH sides, AND take TWO WHOLE WEEKS to send
it to me. That's where I draw the big fat line.

Ok this time I will actually FILL OUT the email BEFORE hitting send!!! What
    a nitwit!

First impressions on the album. "As I Am" no change for me...the song is ok
and nothing more. "This Dying Soul" this song makes "As I am" sound
good...sorry not into this one at all. Trying to be Sevendust does not work
at all. And the playing is absolutely STUPID. Total overkill. This one
might never grow on me. We'll see. "Endless Sacrifice" for the most part
is a really good song, I think it will definitely grow. "Honor Thy Father"
is along the lines of "This Dying Soul"...part of it are terrible. Yeah the
rapping...sounds like bad Nu-Metal. Shit. The album then takes a happy
turn for me. The last 3 tracks are easily the best ones. "Vacant" is
great! THANK GOD! Jordan and Myung save the day. This song points out
that the balance of power in this band is totally screwed up. "SoC" is
great and a classic. "In The Name of God" is also a future classic and
James finally gets to belt it out.

Overall, this album was a misstep. Guys be yourselves...unless this is
yourselves...in which case, nevermind. KIDDING! I am hoping this gets
    better.

Hey if Portnoy listens to that shit, good for him. I don't. This Dying Soul has good parts and some TERRIBLE parts in it. Those parts derail the "train of thought".

Oddly enough, Dream Theater has never been a Progressive ROCK band at all. They are Progressive METAL.

Progressive ROCK bands are like Spock's Beard and The Flower Kings..

But anyway, no need to continue to argue with each other -- to each their own.

    Dude,

    I don't see how it's a matter of being a sheep.

Jan, what'd u think of the CD? Upon first listen I am thoroughly impressed and not disappointed. Only first-impression disappointment is the lack of insanity in the instrumental. I see now why they chose that as the songwriting contest as it is probably the least complex song on the album (besides Vacant). The song still kicks ass, I was just expecting it to kick Dance of Eternity's complexity and insanity from here to Tokyo. I think the boys need some anger management on this album as it is HARD HITTIN :)

Yeah man !! There is definitely some anger on this CD, and I love it. Very aggressive, very HEAVY. I love the CD from front to back. Not a disappointing moment on the entire CD.

How about that BASS... JohnFuckinMyung !!! Rocking the hell outta my Alpines in the car, that's for sure.

The melody on this album is lacking. Being heavy for the sake of it too which is pretty sad. Too much NUMETAL...not enough PROG!! I expect more out of these guys. This is not a bad album but it sure is nowhere near SFaM or god forbid Images & Words! Throwing notes all over the page and being heavier than hell? NOPE. [sigh]
