I can't speak for everyone, as a matter of fact most of what you say I'm sure is not representative of many people, but yes I was particularly impressed with MP on TOT. I found in SFAM (which as he said, was due to improvisation and lack of composing time) and 6DoIT (no excuse to what I remember) that he was on, but that he wasn't doing anything too impressive. He hasn't pulled any metropolis style messed-up fills, or any 6:00 style one thousand different drum hitting, but he does sound like he put much more energy into it this time around.

According to an online chat with MP, Honor Thy Father is about MP's
step-father, hence the line "don't cross the crooked step."

I don't. My definition of wankery stems from clowns like Yngwie, who I
cannot stand. When solos become silly, I lose interest. I think the
    border
line for JP's solos is the one on Erotomania. That one to me walks the
wankery line very dangerously. I know alot of folks probably love it but
    I
think it is borderline. I threw ToT in yet again last night and got
    pissed
off in the middle of Honour Thy Father and hit eject. The line "Don't
    cross
the crooked step" got me so friggin pissed off and I had enough. I put
    in
something completely different. This CD isn't even in my top 20 for the
year. A disc with 4 decent tracks just doesn't cut it for me. I am going
to file it and try to let it go. I cannot force myself to like it I
    guess.

Well said Rob. I think that's one of my major problems with ToT
and with Dream Theater on the past 2 CDs. The solos have very little to
do with the rest of the song and in fact in general they seem to have
forgotten about theme and development. It's like they copied in a chunk
from an LTE song and pasted it into ToT. In comparison the solos from I&W
and other DT CDs work around strong themes which make the whole song (for
me) are much more enjoyable. I've already touched on the melodies so I
    won't get into that again.

Purely curious, but you don't have to answer that.
