    >They still haven't published the SoC songwriting contest results? Anybody
    >got news on this one? Although I'm pretty sure Brian Wherry will be the
    winner.

I think that might be a bit unfair - he's almost semi-pro, isn't he? From
what I've heard, he's supposedly writing a couple tunes for an upcoming
    LaBrie album.

I hope that wasn't supposed to be a secret.

    >By the way, now that 2003 is over, why don't you guys and girls mention
    >your personal top 10 releases of the year? This year was packed with great
    >cds, so it's going to be hard (at least for me) to come up with my list
    >(which I will do later after giving it some thought).

OK I'll give it a go:

    1. A.C.T - Last epic
Man, do I love their very special style. Great songs but also with very
innovative stuff going on. This is THE album of 2003 imho.

    2. Dream Theater - Train of thoughts
No explanation needed. I just think that A.C.T's album is better :-/

    3. Kamelot - Epica
Power metal isn't a genre I like that much otherwise, but Kamelot has
something extra. Probably Roy Khan on the vocals and better songs, I guess.

    4. O.S.I. - Office of strategic influence
Kevin Moore and Jim Matheos - sooooo damn good atmosphere on this album
    (similar to Fates Warning's APSoG).

    5. Arena - Contagion
Was blown away when I saw Arena live in Stockholm in beginning of December.
Contagion is definitely one of Arena's top albums.

    6. Dreamtide - Dreams for the daring
Excellent melodic rock. Can't put my finger on exactly why I like it so
much. Sort of 'going for the goal' attitude, positive and energetic.

    7. Astral Doors - Of the son and the father
Growing up listening to Rainbow, Dio and Deep Purple this really recalls
great memories. Definitely best hard rock album for 2003.

    8. Frameshift - Unweaving the rainbow
Hasn't grown onto me fully yet, but still it is worth being placed into the
top 10 of 2003. LaBrie sounds excellent on this album.

    9. Masterplan - St
This album would do nothing for me without Jorn Lande on vocals. Hmmm, this
is also power metal which I said I don't particularly like... strange. But
    it rocks. Alot.

    10. Derek Sherinian - Black utopia
Derek seems to have found his place nowadays. This is what he was destined
    to do.

There ya go, 2003 was a very good year when it comes to releases. I probably
forgot some albums, and my opinion will probably change over time.

    /Thomas
