>Dream Theater was just announced for Milwaukee, WI -

you take a look at the web site right now, the DT show
is up top, with the details the guy posted above. But
it also says stuff about how it's a special reserved
seated show, with limited general admission tickets.
What's the deal there? especially about the special
reserved tickets, but also about the seated show part?
That's not how I envisioned seeing DT indoors. Maybe
more like, that's not how I've ever seen DT indoors,
and it doesn't make *sense* to me....
about the reserved part, limited general admission
tickets.....what's that mean, so I have to finally
bite the bullet and join the fan club to be able to
show that I'm a real fan? if that's the case, that's
BS. I'd hate to have to add a $28 surcharge (DTIFC
membership fee as of right now) to the ticketmaster
overcharges, to the $10 bucks I'm always gonna pay for
parking in Milwaukee after having had a car window
busted out when I tried parking for free on a previous
concert run up there....basically, if I have to join
the dtifc for a shot at seeing DT, then I'll be paying
upwards of a hundred bucks to see a Dream Theater
concert (no comments, please, from the road
trippers....I haven't felt your pain, and I feel
myself fortunate for that, but right now, I'm bitching
and moaning, and this isn't the time :) and
being a poor grad student once again, that's not
friendly....even if it is for a 4 hour show.
just curious, is this the way other DT shows on this
tour are being sold/touted? I've seen the "an evening
with" signs on dt.net, but the 4 hour, seated concept
i haven't noticed....

HI Partha,
I don't know anything about the Milwaukee show, but I have seen them 5 times
in Minnesota, and 2 of those have been seated. It just depends on the
venue.

that website only lists 22 of the 54 entries that were sent in. however,
the songs on that site kick arse. well, most of them at least...

Not mosh pits, per se, but smash pits! I haven't been squashed like that since I used to see Primus in the early 90's.... I was probably the oldest one there except some obvious parents... Great show, though. Go see them, Rick.

The Dream Theater show in London on Saturday was probably the greatest concert I've ever seen them play. Phenomenal setlist (Only A Matter Of Time and Trial Of Tears, for fuck's sake!), awesome crowd, packed-out venue, immaculate performances from all five band members.
I also had the pleasure of meeting Tony Gelberg and Graham Boyle, whom I know from these mailing lists. Nice meeting you guys. :-)
DT rule.

that's awesome! i've never seen DT perform Trial of Tears live. i hope they continue that on their US leg. which would be great, since i've sort of re-discovered FII this week. it's been in my CD changer since Thursday! i didn't remember how much i dug that record.

Well, I'd love to get into details, but it's all too much for my poor little head. I said it to everyone who would listen, every time they tour or bring out an album I prepare myself for inevitable disappointment, and every time, they blow my nuts off.
Hammersmith is a totally different venue with no seats. It's like the Astoria, but larger, and with some of the theatrics of Brixton Academy. It was packed to the rafters. Usual mix of people, from old-school Maiden fans, to middle-aged prog geeks, to the Tool-influenced tats-and-piercings lot. The band were visibly pleased at this, and really appeared to be enjoying the jams. I didn't see that really cute girl who fainted last time around.
Jordan is bald. Portnoy has his mullet back - probably as long as it's ever been. Petrucci has gone quite nu-metal with spiky hair and trendy shades. Myung reinforced his reputation as the coolest man in rock. I'll talk about James at the end.
As a unit, they were tight but loose. If I'm gong to nitpick, it was a _little_ bit like the old days of Petrucci and Portnoy being too loud in the mix, and Myung and Rudess being a shade low. Also, I sometimes wonder if Portnoy has even heard his drum sound out of the PA. I must emphasise that this is like those people who complain that Cameron Diaz has bad skin, and I'm not complaining, as I've heard it be much worse in years gone by.
Now an incomplete and certainly not in order attempt at a set list.
As I Am Fatal Tragedy Caught In A Web This Dying Soul Finally Free Endless Sacrifice Only A Matter Of Time Another Day The Great Debate Honor Thy Father A Mind Beside Itself (yeah, all of it baby, yeah!) In The Name Of G-d Trial Of Tears Metropolis
The new material was incredible live, as I thought it would be. I think a lot of older stuff has been given a new lease of life as the band have realised that there is no point in being anything other than heavy. :-P
Coming from someone who doesn't usually like that kind of vocal, I have to say that James The Brie was totally on fire and has turned into an outstanding frontman as well as singer. He looks confident, and appears to have lost the chip on his shoulder, _and_ the chips on his plate - looking quite trim ;-) . His tambourine playing still needs work. ;-) He also didn't wear one of those really bright XXXXXL hockey shirts, which is a Good Thing.
I planned to forego taping the show and take some photos instead. Bought some batteries from a newsagent and got totally fucked over as they literally lasted 10 seconds.
Portnoy's parting comment included something about coming back later in the year.
