If you like the solos in the middle of Killing Hand, then you might be
interested in Rising Force, a new mailing list for neo-classical metal.
I'm posting this to Ytsejam mainly for the benefit of those who don't
have news. If you like Yngwie, and/or the use of classical music in
metal, e-mail me for details.

About Fates Warning. I have Parrellels and Perfect Symmetry. Parrells is
wonderful, I love it. PS isn't great, but it isn't bad. All in all, I like
it. That's why I figured I'd by Night on Brocken, since I've never seen them
in the stores. :) Since nobody seems to know much about it, I'll review it
when I get it ;)
BTW, something totally unrelated, I saw the Goo Goo Dolls in concert today.
It was great! :) Not sure how many of you have heard it, but they're good :)
Nothing like Dream theater, but good none the less :)

Subject: Learning to Live = AIDS

Hi,

To those of you wondering whether Learning to Live was or wasn't
about AIDS, here's an extract from the interview I did with Mike
Portnoy after their UK tour last April:

PM: Somebody on the net-list
suggested that Learning To Live is all about AIDS. Any
     comments on that?

Mike: Um, those are John Myung's lyrics, so I can't really
comment for him. But I do know that those lyrics were
definitely inspired by the AIDS epidemic. After those
lyrics were first written, John first told us that it
is about AIDS, but since then he's changed his mind
(laughs). So you'd have to ask him. But those are
definitely references to the AIDS epidemic.

I was reading the discog again and now see even more songs, and even
more confusion. Eve is being called 2 different songs, and now there
is a new one called Freedom after To Live Forever on LiT. Eve is
listed before Take The Time (live) Someone also saw Eve listed as the
song before PMU on DoE. It is not on my CD, so where is it listed.
Can someone who knows some of the band members please ask them if all
possible. Maybe over winter break...

I just would like to know what is what...

Hi all! I haven't posted in a while (or maybe not at all..) so here goes:

The Japanese girl from LiT said something like this: "From now on, please do your best in Japan. I expecting/looking forward to the concert." Or something like that...The "From now on, do your best.." doesn't mean that she though that they sucked before :) It's not clear what she's looking forward to..the concert..big things from DT.. Anyway, it's a combo of two really common cheesy phrases that the Japanese use. (Not that that is bad at all. )

A while ago, someone asked about the insert (white foldout paper) in LaM (Jp Ver) One side has a review/critique of DT and the other side had the lyrics. I plan to translate at least some of it over winter break. There's also one in the WDADU (Jap Ver), and probably the Japanese release of I&W (no bonus trax..I checked). I don't have the I&W one, but if I get the time I'll try to translate some of it or the highlights and post them.

I don't know about the German LatM, but the Japanese one said that it was to "commemorate DT's coming to Japan"...This seems to happen alot in Japan as a recent trend. Unfortunately, I left for Japan in late May only 3 days before DT came back to St.Louis....and left Japan 3 weeks before they came to Osaka. They came to Osaka on 8/28 (i think) after 2 shows in Tokyo.

Some one on TNMS wrote about the band Cynic. He claimed they were a better band than DT. I asked him for more info and sent him the address for this list. He told me that this is the band's first release and they have roots in Death Metal. He oviously has not written here, so I will give you my opinions of it.

It is ovious the roots of the band is in Death Metal just by listening to the lead singer. IMO he is horible and just ruins the band for me. They do some interesting effects on his voice, though. If you can get past the singing, though, you will find a solid band behind it all. The band is not mindless thrash. There seems to be a lot of softer, melodic parts in all of their songs. There is some keyboard, but not used nearly as well as in DT.

Overall, they are an ok band. They could be a good band if they could get a real singer. (Textures is an awesome instremental, though!)

On to other things. Does anyone notice that DT has added more songs while they been on tour? (I know, dumb question.) When I went to see them in Febuary, Their set was fairly standard. (all of I&W, Fourtune in Lies, and the Ytsejam) Now they have added a few songs (The Killing Hand, To Live Forever, and (once) A Change of Seasons) I just thought that was interesting.

The guys admitting "Learning to Live" was about AIDS I think was in an interview at Hammerjacks (I think with Portnoy or Petrucci, I don't remember which.) I used to have a copy of it, but not anymore.

First off, James *wishes* he was singing in front of 15k for 2.5 hours!!

I caught the following DT gigs during the Images and Tour tour that were relatively close to one another:

Dream Theater 1992-1993 "Images & Tour" Concert Dates

Month Day City, State (Country) Venue -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

*** 1992:

Dec 16 Boston, MA Axis

*** 1993:

Jan 09 Salisbury, MA Chapter II Jan 10 Hadley, MA Vertex Jan 13 Providence, RI Club Babyhead

Each time, I was in the front row for the shows!! By the time the Babyhead gig rolled around, James would look at me like "I'm sick of seeing you at our f'ing gigs...why don't you stop coming?" ... or something like that. A real loser, if you ask me (the Yngwie Malmsteen attitude!).

Personally, I think a band would be psyched and/or flattered that a fan would come to all of their area shows. James, imho, really doesn't seem to care in that respect.

How many more times are we going to have to stare at the discography? I'm getting a little tired of seeing it.

One word on some of the band member's less than enthusiastic interplay with fans. They were are certainly congenial, if not excited, when I met them. Most of the people I was hanging around with after the show to meet the band could have used a shower and an education - I bet the band gets tired of hearing such perceptive comments as, "You're the fuckin' best, dude!!!!!" (That's not aimed at anyone here on the Net).

On that note...

Anyone here figure out what Take The Time is about? I had no idea (other than ambiguous 'it's about not hurrying things and thinking them through') until last night I was reading, and it hit me. We have to ask them about this.. it's based on J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings! I shall expand on this:

"The unbroken spirit obscured in disquiet" - Tolkien uses those EXACT WORDS in the Mirkwood forest while Bilbo is thinking...

"By the spirit this trial demands" - the whole story is Gandalf's sending Bilbo on one hell of a trial.. which he passes.

"And at the end of this day, sighs in anxious relief, for the fortune is still in his hands" - the ring of invisibility, even when they keep running into trouble, and Sting, his magic sword.

"You're fighting the weight of the world, no one can save you this time, close your eyes, and you'll find all you need in your mind" - Bilbo has to save the dwarven party more than once, against seemingly insurmountable odds, and he closes his eyes and thinks up a solution and pulls it off, saving the party...

"I close my eyes, and feel the water rise around me" - the enchanted river that puts people to sleep if they fall in, like Bombur did!!

"Drown the beat of time, left my senses fall away" - it also acted as a spell of "forget" to any victim, and the last thing they remembered was events from weeks ago.

"Givig freely wandering promises, A place with decisions I'll fashion, I won't waste another breath." - again Tolkien practically quotes this when the party has just left Beorn and Gandalf...

What do you all think? I know it's not exactly a modern subject, but the quotes fit, or seem to... and shit, if Pull Me Under is about Hamlet, this could be anything...

for ASILVER@whatever.wherever.edu:

The Fates Warning first 4 cds are out of print as far as I know, (by themselves at least) They have been re-released (as imports I think) as 2-cd sets, with Night on Brocken/Spectre Within as one double cd, and Awaken the Guardian/No Exit as the other. I bought the first one, but haven't bouth the AG/NE because I already have No Exit on disc..anyone know of any copies of Awaken the Guardian on disc??

for everyone:

I couldn't get my name in for the promo cd thing in time, since I went home that weekend. Anyone willing to sell their copy? I collect promo cds, and I would really like a copy. I am willing to either trade copies of all kinds of rush/dt/qryche/primus/king's x boots or just buy a copy outright.

ps...I just heard consciously unreal for the first time yesterday, (thanks to Michael Burstin!!!) and I have to say it is unreal..it is one of the best sounding boots I have heard. A Change of Seasons is incredible. At least we know they're not gonna cheese out on us with future releases. CoS really reminded me of Metropolis in some ways, with its contrasting textures, odd time riffs, and key/gtr/bass perfect scalar passages. I was really impressed.

Who got up on the wrong side of the bed today??? hoo man.

I'm only going to post it about once every three weeks or so from here out, unless no changes have been made, in which case I won't post it. But we have added a LOT to it and there are people who are waiting to see those additions... this is a mail list, you can always nuke the discog messages by title (and I will include it in the title).

Well it's mainly the secnd verse... coincides VERY well with Hamlet and the Soliloquy, and his angst over wanting to kill Claudius but having to really build himself up to do it...

"if not today nor yet tomorrow then some other day" "I'd take seven lives for one, and then my only father's son as sure as I did ever love him, I am not afraid"...

There is more to that, but that is the nut-shell version. It's about as subtle as the AIDS message in LtL, but less direct than the "coma" or whatever-type mental deal from Another Day "the coldness of his words, the message in his silence"

That's an interesting stretch with TTT and Tolkien! Unfortunately, I have bad news. I remember in one of the interviews that the band members each wrote one section of the lyrics, and it's about life on the road and the rigors of touring, and how they have to sit back and relax and digest everythingonce in a while! (Notice the Lyric credit is given to Dream Theater rather than one member.) Good effort though!

I'll cautiously agree, after being flamed (gently) on a.m.r for daring to say "Stairway to Heaven" is about the Lady Galadriel. :)
