I, too, believe that DT has strong roots in its Iron Maiden influence. Its what I call "Opera Metal". I dont like all of their stuff but I think they started a Genre with the song 'Run to the hills'. The first time I heard Queensryches "The Eyes of a stranger", I thought it was Maiden. The first time I heard Helloween's "I want out", I thought it was Maiden. And I must admit, the first time I heard "Pull me under", I thought it SOUNDED like Maiden. Although I feel I have to weed through alot of bad maiden songs to find the good ones, I do feel they deserve recognition for breaking the ground for other bands to explore. +Michael

No, I'm not bashing Labrie by any stretch of the imagination. He's a great singer (if you doubt it, just imagine DT with John Arch as I said b4, and you'll learn to love Labrie :) And I can imagine how tough it must be on his voice to sing that material day in an day out. Just commenting how bad that one song was though. *shudder* :) Chris >>>

Oops. I guess I sounded a little harsh, but I do think that LaBrie is a very good singer. From what I understand, he still hasn't learned to preserve his voice from show to show. Is preserving a technique or merely a talent?

Another hand/The Killing Hand ought to come from LatM. That's the best performance of them I've heard by far.

I check out your list over my girlfriend's shoulder (yeah, she's the subscriber) and see far too many tab postings. Music's not about exact notes written down on a piece of paper, it's something that should be listened to and appreciated for being its beautiful self. I am a guitarist, but I tire quickly of seeing how so-and-so plays such-and-such a solo. I just want to play from the heart. I think John P. would agree with me.

What I'm also interested in, though, are the tracks off the "Majesty demo(s)" that are so damn hard to get hold of. If you happen to have those on you, maybe you could consider replacing the I&W tracks with some of the demo tracks. I can't speak for everyone on the list, but I think a lot of people would also be interested in getting hold of a copy of those.

On a more general note, if you get YTSEJAM in digest format, how is it possible to reply to one piece of mail without having to delete all the other mailings?

Hello Dream Theater fans! I just wanted to put this note into this news board to thank you for staying with us and tell you about what's to come with the band. I gave a friend a copy of some demos we made for our upcoming album, and he told me he was on a network mailing group where everybody talks about Dream Theater and is a real fan. I am, well,,, I am really happy to hear this, I'm glad we as Dream Theater have attracted some fans, and I want to thank you all for listening to us, coming to see us play, and buying our tapes! Our upcoming album has no title yet. Kevin and I will decide what to call it a little later when all the songs are ready for production. We have written a lot of music, a LOT of music. We wanted Terry Brown to produce for us but he seems to have prior commitments elsewhere. We expect to record at the end of the month and have the new tape out for sale near the end of May, if time permits. I notice a lot of talk about bootlegg collecting here on the list. I wish you guys the best of luck. It really means a lot to me that you guys would go out of your way to get bootlegg tapes of us. But the rest of the band would rather you didn't. I have a huge collection, and I am taping most every show we play. One day I will probably release a lot of it to collectors. Already I have let a small few of my tapes out to a few friends, mostly tapes from earlier tours and before our first album, "When Dream & Day Unite". Thats all I really have time to write. I assure you this mail is really from me, I am using this anonymous server because I don't have time to read or answer mail replies, or even log on more than once a month or so. As our album gets closer to done I will drop by again. Thank you all, and I hope you keep listening.

I was tempted to get the DTM CD (and a Kings X that i dont ahve on CD), but realised that i really dont know enough about them(or Vovoid) to tell if it would be worth it) I know that someone or another posted a few messages about them earlier, but can someone give me some kind of idea of what they sound like? What can i expect from either of them, in terms of complexity/length/lyrics? I just read the last ytsejam and one letter just reminded me of something that I forget to tell you all this. This guy said that he was watching sports tv this past saturday I believe and he heard Another Day being played in the back.

This Saturday I was at work (I work in the electronics department) and some ABC Sports thing was on and they started a segment about high diving. Guess what music was in the background... PULL ME UNDER!!! I couldn't believe it! It was kinda loud at the start but then when the hard part started to come in it kinda faded out. I wonder if Pull Me Under and Another Day were both on that same show? Maybe there is a Dream Theater fan working for ABC sound crew??! Cool!

I realized that this was probably the most air-play they have ever had!

Anyone else catch anything like this?

Noticed this when looking through the liner notes of Phish's second album, _Lawn Boy_ (Phish is a very good jazz/rock band). It has "Heavy Metal Screams -- Dean "The Cheese" Labrie." (Dean is one of the engineers). Think there's any relation to good old Kevin James? (:

BTW I do not play any instrument (though I used to play flute and trombone) and I like Dream Theater. I don't even compose (yet), though I know some theory.

Today's outrage, folks: I listened to Pull Me Under with some guy who lives down the floor in my dorm. He claims to have done a bit of drumming and thinks Lars Ulrich is the best rock drummer around. That's only part of the outrage. After the song ended, he turned to me and told me he still thinks Ulrich is "hands down" the best drummer out there. I was so surprised, I just said, "OK, whatever."

Funny world we live in, ain't it?

When I first heard them, I thought they sounded like a combination of Metallica and ELP more than anything else.
