Not me. Sorry, Derek is a great guy, but I personally think he is the WRONG
player for DT for a permanent basis. I _know_ Derek and his playing -- we hung
together for a couple of years at Berklee College of Music -- while one cannot
deny Derek has chops, I see his style as really more "rock" based. He has great
Fusion chops, but I wouldn't say he was a really good Jazz player (contrary to
what "Greg" said in the following comment):

    >>I could live with that! The jazz influence is obvious if you were
    >>at the Toronto show!

I know Mike Portnoy has been quoted that DT is all about "balls and chunk", but
I'd rather see the band build on it's "progressive" Jazz and Fusion chops and
less on their chunky "Metallicaesque" rhythm patterns of the later years. I
was very happy when I had heard Jordan from KORG was playing with them -- now
he is a MONSTER player -- sadly he's with the Dregs now (good for the Dregs,
sad for DT). I would hope the band with replace Kevin with a player solid in
    Jazz/Beebop, as opposed to a "rock"-based keyboardist (I was cringing when I
heard they were auditioning Jens Johannsen -- aack!). Derek really burned the
gigs with Kiss and Alice Cooper, but I caught the first 6 dates of the "Awake"
tour, and was surprised (and unhappy) at his performance...esp. at Berklee
(their home turf). Also, Derek's "Hollywood Producer" image doesn't really fit
in with DT's "long hair/MTV" trip.

Just mvho/0.02 from someone who's known 4/5's of DT from his days at Berklee.

PS -- I've seen lots of versions on the spelling of his first name (Derrik, Derrick, etc.). His business card lists his name as "Derek C. Sheridian", FYI and FWIW.

    To whomever asked about Dokken:

I would say that Dokken is NOT progressive but rather a hard rock band. The guitarist is George Lynch and he is an incredible guitarist. I'd say his trademark is the pinch harmonics (those high squeals) attained from what I hear by using a metal washer as a pick. They don't use 3-chord standard progressions by any means, but it's not exactly progressive.

If you're looking for a rockin' band with a wicked guitarist, this bands for you. A lot of songs are about lost love, deceitful women, etc, so if you like those pissed off or sad lyrics check it out.

    Some of their albums include:

Tooth and Nail Under Lock and Key Back for the Attack (my personal fav) Beast from the East

The only hit song I think they had was "Alone Again".

    Hi all,

Well I guess I am one among the elite number of people that won promo packs from C-man (at least my name was on the list). I just wanted to know if other people that were also on this list have gotten their packs yet? I don't want to complain but I haven't got mine yet and I know some people that have. So I am wondering what is going on. Of course the blame can usually be put on the fine US Postal system. Please e-mail me personally about this it wouldn't be good to flood the list with this stuff. If it gets really long I guess I could write C-man but I know he is busy and I rather not bug him (yet *chuckle*).

Also anyone out there that hasn't heard INFERNO's "Psychic Distance" or EARLY WARNING's "The Hero's Dream" I suggest you try and get in contact with these two bands (who both have members on the list) and get their tapes. They both ROCK (I really mean it, I couldn't stop listening to "The Hero's Dream" when I got it)!!! So there is my plug for these bands.

    Hey guys!

Does anybody know if DT are going to Russia while touring in the Europe?

One more Q: are Europe tour dates available?

    Thanx, Freddy.

Dave, Have you heard anything else out about this place Hang 10? Is it supposedly going to be in "The Flats" or somewhere else. I live about 50 miles from there so I'd be willing to go see DT there no problemo.. especially if it's over CHristmas break.

Thanx to all those who have sent their dream band picks, this is terribley exciting. It seems we all have extremely varied tastes in music. A couple requests though. 1) list the band these people are from. I hate to say it, but there have been a few names I don't recognize. I never thought that would happen, but it did. So, please help to educate me. 2) Someone had the idea of adding lyricist to the list. So, feel free t to also list your choice for a lyricist for the band. Those of you who have already sent a band, please send a lyricist if you get around to it. Thanx all! keep 'em coming! SLAY

I just bought the Japanese cd of Awake the other day to get the extra song of 'Eve' (On a seperate 3 incher noless) but was really disappointed to find they didn't add the spoken word passages like was done with the live version of the song.....Anyone know why they did that? Perhaps to eliminate the Christian element? Also, does anyone know where they sampled that guy's voice when they used it live?

I'm new here, so if these are redundant questions please bear with me. I've been a fan since '89 (Thanks to the Spirit of Rush guys for turning me on to them) and met them in Green Bay, WI last year. One nice bunch of guys to meet. All were friendly and signed the big pile of stuff I had brought with. (I have that Status Seeker promo....How many did they press of that?...I asked the guys, but they didn't know) Everyone else by the bus were just wanna-be's who just had IAW and were new to the group. (I think the pre IAW stuff is an important part of the band and shouldn't be ignored or forgotten about....just my opinion)

Is a Change of Season every going to be put on a studio disc? It's such a great song and deserves more exposure than on just bootlegs and demos. How about an edit single for the radio? (Yeah right!...20 minutes down to 3)

Where the hell is part 2 for Metropolis? I thought they'd do it on Awake. Guess not. I read once where they said there'd be a part 2 and that would be the conclusion to it. (No part 3, 6 ,9....like Saga did)

That's about the size of it. When Dokken broke up, Don Dokken took the glamour shit with him and Lynch/Brown were left with mostly a showoff guitar band (such as Vai and Winger were) when they formed Lynch Mob.

Wow! What about their magnum opus, "In My Dreams"... or their two hits from the Elm Street 3 soundtrack.. "Dream Warriors" and "Into the Fire". However, my favourite tracks from them are none of those.. they are "Sleepless Nights" and "The Hunter", with a close third to "Will The Sun Rise" and fourth to "Mr. Scary".

Who else likes Dokken? Favourite songs?

Someone suggested that we submit our NON DT Dream Band nominees. This is like saying "What is the best car of all time, without mentioning a Cheverolet," but I'm more than game. Remember, this is non-DT...

    Me:

Vocalist: Sebastian Bach (2nd: Dickenson) Guitarist: Dave Murray (2nd: Vai) Drummer: Nicko McBrain (2nd: Can I say Portnoy? No? How bout Wild Mick Brown?) Bassist: Steve Harris (Yeah, like there is another... Ask John M.!!) Keyboards: (Keyboards are like condoms; you only use them when you have to...); my opinion before DT!! Ther are no others!

Can you tell who my favorite band is? I grew up as a bass player on Maiden, so please don't hold anything against me.

Remember, these are not my favorite musicians, but the people I would like to see play together. Favorite musician is another category. Any one have the guts to start a list of that?

    My roommate:

Vocalist: That Steel Heart Guy (Don't have the CD jacket...) Guitarist: Steve Vai Bass: Steve Harris Drummer: Tommy Aldridge

Actually, the only hit song Dokken had was "I My Dreams" which got a ton of MTV play time back in 85...and it was then re-made into an extremely CHEESY pop tune by some pathetic group name The Party...or some stupid crap like that...anyways, they totally ruined the song...but it struck big with Top 40 radio (The Party's version). Also for those that don't know...they ARE back together...so let's start a DOKKEN mailing list!!!

Now for some DT stuff...for the dude who knocked Jens ("I cringed when I heard they auditioned Jens...")...Jens TOTALLY Kicks!!! I must jump in to defend him on this one...cause...well...just go listen to his solos on ANY Malmsteen tape (of those he was on)...or look around for a good Boot of some live stuff (I don't have any...but a friend does, and he can fly!!!)...and I'm telling you, he can hold his own!!! I do understand where you're coming from with your idea...but give a guy credit!!! Just cause a person's been doing a certain gig for a while...doesn't mean he can't go on to another one. Later!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------- According to the circle of fifths, and the pattern of sharps and flats: If the alphabet continued as notes progressed (Using Major Key Sig's) (i.e A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, etc.) eventually the key of Z Major would have 4 sharps.

FYI my fave song was "Paris is Burning"

    > Now for some DT stuff...for the dude who knocked Jens ("I cringed when I > heard they auditioned Jens...")...Jens TOTALLY Kicks!!!

I must have read that differently than you read it because it sounded to me like Buckley was criticizing the *style of keyboardist* that was being auditioned more than he was criticizing Jens technical ability.

    As buckley@powdml.enet.dec.com wrote:

    > one cannot deny Derek has chops, [but] I see his style as really more > "rock" based. [...] but I wouldn't say he was a really good Jazz player

    (Text [in brackets] is mine.)

Jens is a great keyboardist but that doesn't mean that everyone's going to like his style. Heck, Rachmaninoff, Shostakovich and Stravinsky aren't necessarily your favorite classical composers and Random Hold might not be your favorite band.

My impression was that Buckley wanted a jazz keyboardist since that would create tension in the band (tension--to a point--is good since it makes music interesting). Although the idea is intriguing, I think it would cause too much tension and that the jazz keyboardist would leave :)

But I do think that it's a valid point that the new keyboardist should have influences outside of progressive metal to bring new tension into the band.

I got to speak briefly with Derrek after the Denver show and in the course of the conversation it came out that he had had 2 weeks to prepare for the tour. He hadn't been (his words) a fan of DT before he flew to NY to talk with them and didn't know any of the music. (This is an honest question, not sarcasm or flame) Do you think that could be a pretty heavy influence on his performance?

I'm certainly no keybordist and am not college educated in music, but I've been playing drums for 22 years and my comment to him was that I'd be hardpressed to come up with 1/2-hour of Portnoy's stuff in two weeks as well-executed as Derrek did an hour and a half of Kevin's stuff.

You know him much better than I could pretend to, so I'm interested in your opinion. (hell, I'm sure it makes a difference that I'm seeing him well into the tour as opposed to at the beginning) I'm interested in hearing more about his performance at those first few shows.

    Peace!
