    To those who don't know:

There is a Dokken mailing list called
"Breaking the Chains". Don't have the
e-mail address right now, but I'll
post later. If any of you read the
hard rock or heavy metal newsgroups,
the person who puts out the letter
often post about it on these nets.

Dokken rules! Back For The Attack, while hardly what I'd consider progressive,
is a great metal album. Favorite songs: Kiss of Death, Mr. Scary, Alone
    Again, and Tooth & Nail.

Though I don't have time now for a full report on the Seattle show
from last Sunday night, I wanted to pass along info on "A Change Of
    seasons":
All the members said that they will be going into the studio in
approximately April to record this - no word as to what studio or who the
    keyboardist will be.

James and Mike indicated that their intent is to put out a 40 or so
minute EP containing ACoS, Eve, To Live Forever, and one other (as-of-yet
    unwritten) track.

Coming later I'll post a report of the conversations I had with the
band after the show -- they had some really great comments!

I was on cdconnection.com and they have the Japanese Awake
for 31$ if any one is interested.

They also have all of Crimson Glory's cds and Magellans Impending
    Ascension.

I got Crimson Glory's first for 16.72 (import)

And Magellans Impending Ascension for 13.61 (domestic)

I also got Y&T's Anthology for 17.93 (import) if anyone cares about
    that non progressive band.

On the subject of Dokken, there is an import best of cd available
that has a song "Back for the attack" that was no on any of their
    albums.

According to the amazing Myra Wong's "List of Music Mailing Lists"
    the info is:

    DOKKEN/LYNCH MOB (Breaking the Chains)
      kirsten@mik.uky.edu
BTC is a monthly mailinglist about the musicians that were formerly in
Dokken and Lynch Mob. The issues contain info about the bands, as well
as George Lynch guitar tab and discussion.

If you compare Tooth & Nail live and in the studio, then you realize that those studio albums suck! (IMO) they are way to cheesy.

Greetings 'Jammers. Yet more news and views from the UK..

Well, I went out yesterday and bought the UK release of Lie on 12 inch and cd single, and strangely enough, they've both got the full versions of Space-dye vest as B-sides. I like the song and everything, but I'd have prefered Eve. Oh well, never mind...

I'll do all this from memory, so bear with me if I make any huge cock-ups. First the CD:

This comes in the usual plastic cd single type box with the clock face/eye thing on the front. If you look closely, you can make out the majesty symbol in the centre of the pupil. In the bottom right hand corner are the words "first ever UK single" and at the top of the picture are the words "Contains previously unreleased material". The liner notes just have the track listing, a picture of the Awake cover and a band picture. All of them sitting in a room looking upset (as they do). They are all facing the camera except Kevin who is looking off to the right. John M is at the front, with John P a little behind and to the left, then to the right there's James, Mike and Kevin in that order (I think). The track listing and approximate times are:

    1. Lie (edit) 4ish minutes 2. Space-dye Vest 7ish minutes 3. To Live Forever 5ish minutes 4. Another Day (Live at the Marquee April/93) 5ish minutes

To Live forever is very much like the LiT version except without the imense solo. It sounds damn good even so. Well worth getting your hands on just for the novelty value. Another Day sounds pretty good too (same quality as LatM, funnily enough :) although, I think the Keyboard/Saxophone solos are a bit naff after the amazing studio version.

As for the 12 inch vinyl single, it's a strictly limited edition. The cover is as for the CD except that the words at the top read "Includes previously unreleased demo track". It came shrink wrapped and contained a stricly limited edition images and words poster fanzine thiny. More of this later. The tracks and apporximate times are:

    Side 1: 1. Lie 6ish minutes

Side 2: 1. Space-dye Vest 7ish minutes 2. Take the Time (previously unreleased demo) 7ish minutes

Take the Time sounds very similar to the final version, except that the quality is not as good (as it was done on a home 16 track recorder). I haven't been through it with a fine tooth comb though, so I couldn't tell you what else is different about it. The notes on the back of the cover say that it was recorded as part of a demo to present to Atco records. There was also an embryonic version of To Live Forever and one other song that I can't for the life of me remember, included on the demo tape. A record deal was immediately forthcoming. James is singing on it and I think it said it was recorded in early 1992 (does this sound right?). I'll copy the blurb out word for word next week sometime. The back of the cover also has the same picture as was on the CD single.

Onto the fanzine...On the back of it is a B&W band picture as it appears in the liner notes of the Awake CD (The one where they're standing in front of a wall). When I say "On the back of it" I mean it's a fold out thing, so the picture is basically a poster. A3 kind of size, if that means anything to anyone. The cover is of the triangular group photo that appears in the Awake liner notes with some writing indicating that it's a dpecial edition of the official fanzine "Images & Words". There's two "pages" of group history and then two pages of interview with John Petrucci and James where they discuss the album with the fanzine editor and go through each song in turn discussing why it's there and what it's about. There was nothing earth shattering here, but if people want, I'll type it all in for you. There's another "page" that covers subscription matters and costs. It's a nice souvenir type thing anyway, and it's more signature fodder for when the boys hit town next year. If they do a signing/getting wasted session in our local rock pub like Warrior Soul, Magnum and Machine Head have done, I'll die a happy man :)

I guess that just about covers everything. If this stuff needs to get added to the FAQL and you need extra information concerning the releases/dates, someone mail me and I'll mail you back ASAP. Cheers for listening.

    Byee,

    Matt.

I get this list digestified, and I delete them soon after I read them, so I can't quote exactly what I want to bring up - sorry for that. But anyway, there was something posted a day or so ago that I kind of skimmed over, but it has been bothering me lately.

Someone posted a concert review/story in which they commented about the "wanna-be's" all over, and defined them as people who just had IAW. The writer then continued by talkiong about the importance of knowing a band's early material. OK I will give you that - BUT I was offended by this. I find that alot of the bands I like have a hardcore fanbase who know everything there is to knwo about the bands. There are bands I knwo everything about - but people can be really elitist about this. I started listening to DT after I heard them on the radio on a long raod trip - I forgot the name, described the sound to my local independent record store - and bought IAW out of the used bin. I had never heard of WDADU at the time. I took the album home and listened to it ad infinitum. (Forever -over and over) I didn;t even care at the time if there were other albums, because to me it was one of the best I had ever heard, and if it was their only on e- so be it. I was lucky to have found this one. Now - did I not have "the right" to call myself a DT fan because I was not versed in the discography? I hope not - not everyone hears of a band at the same time. Though I was already a Rush, Yes, and ELP fan, I was unfamiliar with the term "progressive metal." So what? Can't someone like a band without spending the time others do discussing them and other stuff? Everyone had a first time - no one was born listening to all the bands they like - Deadheads, Phish fans, and Nirvana fans are notorious for being elitist and separating people into "real fans" and "joiners." I hope ytsejammers don';t do the same. When I go to a show of a band I see often, I love to talk to people who just "discovered" them and encourage them to hear more - I have never had the pleasure of seeing DT live - and I would hope that when I finally do - fellow music lovers will not look down on me as a "wanna-be" since I hadn't seen them yet - Again - everyone has a first time.

Sorry for the length, but I think this issue is important for any band's fans. PEACE - Andy Weaver - ACW1066@AOL.COM

    Hi all,

Well two days after I wrote that letter about promo packs I got mine in the mail. I just had a little question....didn't some people say that they got the CIAW single in their pack. I got the following: LIT, LATM (Jap version, YEAH!!!!), and some cool postcards (did any physics people notice that the DT logo is over bubble chamber tracks?). I guess that the poster is on the way as C-man said.

So I also wanted to ask is it usually possible to order CD singles from record stores? I would like to get the single for Lie and CIAW (BTW what is on the b-sides of these singles?).

And one more thing....an anyone else out there got dicked over by the DT fan club? I haven't heard a peep out of them since they cashed my check and I have since written two letter to them and still haven't heard anything. Do they have a phone number or something where I could actually speak to a human?

Please reply to me directly...no need to clutter up the list. Thanks.
