What's there to say about this show execpt "incredible"? Dream Theater
came to Seattle last Sunday and blew us away! Unfortunately the concert
hall (The Moore Theater) left a lot to be desired, due to an extremely
narrow stage which blocked a lot of fans' views of Petrucci and
Sheridian. The performance, however, left little to be desired! The
setlist was largely the same as in previous shows, though I was not aware
    that Take The Time had been added. Here's the list;

    Pull Me Under
    6:00
    Lifting Shadows Off a Dream
    Caught in a Web
    - Drum Solo
    Take the Time
    Petrucci Jam
    Sheridian Jam
    The Mirror
    Lie
    Another Day
    A Mind Beside Itself
    Metropolis

Though I have on;y seen them once before, I've heard plenty of bootlegs,
and this show was great - everyone was right-on, including James.

Now, here comes the "There I was....." portion of the review!

THERE I WAS, on the barricade, front row center, only a few feet from
James and John. The one thing I got out of the show was a great feeling
of intersction with the audience. Petrucci was constantly coming out to
the edge of the stage to bathe in the cheering and outstretched arms, and
James constantly reached out into the crowd to grab hands, etc. I had a
t-shirt on which I drew a huge Majesty "M" and on the back side I took
someone's idea from this list and wrote "I promise not to ask about
Kevin" on it. That got a huge laugh from the band at the end when they
came out -- Portnoy even handed me his drumstick (but not without a
fight with some guys behind me!). Derek got the biggest
laugh out of it (naturally) and I think it was the first time I saw him
    smile the entire show!

After the show, a small group of us waited about an hour for the members
to come out and autograph. I brought with me my Japanese "LATM" CD, my
WDADU CD, the Lie promo single, and the Awake pre-release
sticker/postcard. I'm just going to run-down the highlights of each band
    member's encounter...

Myung - I was very surprised; most of the people on this list believe him
to be quiet and intimidating, but wuth some prodding he actually opened
up and spoke for 10 minutes or so. I asked him if he had ever considered
playing a Chapman "stick" bass, and he indicated that he'd tried it, but
liked his current setup better. When I asked him about his inspiration
for the harmonics at the beginning of LSoaD, he said it was something he
knew from a long time ago, and he had been waiting for the righ time to
use it. Finally, when I asked him what the band thought of Derek, he
only replied that he was "very professional".

LaBrie - From reading what others have written after meeting James, I
expected him to be very stuck-up and standoffish, however I found him to
be very comfortable and he answered all my questions, even posing for
several pictures. When asked about his voice training, he said that he
had studied opera with a woman named "rose" (I don't remember her first
name). I asked about Change Of Seasons, and he said that they had
planned on recording it in the studio in April, after their swing to
Japan. He said that it was to be released on a 40 minute EP to contain
ACoS, Eve, To Live Forever, and an as of yet unwritten track. I asked
about the dropping of OWHTSTS from the setlist, and he said that the band
wanted to have more room to explore other new stuff. Finally, when asked
about warmups, he said that he warms up for 40 minutes before each show,
    and doesn't drink on tour.

Derek - He was very recieving to the crowd, and an extremely cool guy,
    but definitely did not
act like he was part of the band. In fact, he said, he had't heard any DT
before his audition with the exception of Pull Me Under a few times on
the radio. He said he listens to Van Halen and Elton John....

Portnoy - Mike was the greatest! He autographed my drumstick and posed
for pictures with me. I asked him about Change of Seasons and he said
"Was that you yelling "Change Of Seasons'?" I told him that I'd heard
the version they played at the Limelight show and he said "Yeah, on the
Dance Of Eternity boot, right?" Stunned, I said "Uh...yeah!" Then he
proceeded to recommend to me what DT 'legs he thought were the best (his
highest was to the "Lost in the Sky" boot). We talked about the ACos
demo that's going around (I think Mike Bahr has a copy...) and he said
that Chris Sintron was the singer on that one, not Chris Collins as I had
thought. He talked a bit about the demo of TTT that's coming out on the
UK CIAW single, and said that we should be able to tell the difference in
the recording, but the quality was still very good. He also said that
they're going to be doing some kind of TV or Pay Per View special while
they're in Japan, so all you fans over there get your VCR's handy (and
look for 'legs from this one!) Finally he talked about Kevin's leaving
and said that he was just "burned out" and that he "didn't have his heart
in it anymore." One guy asked why Charlie left the band, and Mike said
frankly "Because we told him to!". Mike said that Charlie played at his
wedding last month, and that he was doing that even when he was singing
    for DT.

Petrucci came out, but didn't say a whole lot. A roadie said that he had
just been on the phone back east and had a "family emergency".

SO, that's all for my long-winded report. I think it was one of the
greatest shows I've been to ever. I definitely look forward to them
coming back to Seattle in the spring!

    Don't worry, I won't! 8^)

Sorry Jens, but as someone who's been a DT fan since their initial
meanderings in room E19 at Berklee, I have rather strong opinions
about the band (not that they are worth a crap to anyone but
myself...). Like Derek, one can't deny you have great chops, but
_my opinion_ is that I don't believe your style of playing would fit
in well with DT's overall style.

Someone else on this list had misconstrued my former post (quoted above)
as touting Jens was not a good player. Being a good player is one
thing, but style is another. My basic 0.02 on the matter was basically
I didn't the two would have been a good match (hence my 'cringe' factor).

Word is he's doing much better chemistry-wise with the band on the latter
tour dates. Undeniably, the first few dates were rough...it was obvious,
since key lines and signature licks were often missed -- I'm sure not
intentionally, but as someone else noted, coming up to speed on a set's
worth of DT material would challenge most people.

Just wanted to mention for the person asking about why the Eve single
does not have the lyrics that all times that it was played on the last
tour, except the DoE show, it was done without the lyrics.

I believe (but am not sure) that the voices that were sample were
    samples of Kevin...

Finally, I also got my promo pack... It did not contain the CIAW
    single as someone had mentioned...

Hi guys, I haven't posted on here in ages! Well I'm off to do an interview with Fates Warning Thursday, December 8. I don't know who Metal Blade will set me up with but I am shooting for Jim Matheos. Ok, here is where all the Internet groupies can help out. If you want to know something about the band or ask a question, this is your time! I will be taking questions by e-mail ONLY! Please e-mail all questions to Warmwetos@aol.com. I will do my best to use every single one within the time spand that I have. Please include your name, city and state so I can keep track on who said what. I will keep everyone posted about the interview.

    Also, for anyone from the Southern CA area, I will be attending the Thursday and Friday night shows at the Galaxy Theater (Santa Ana) and The Palace (Los Angeles), 12/8 & 12/9. In case you haven't heard, there is a new Progressive Rock magazine called "PROGnosis". Our first issue's cover story was on Dream Theater.It's packed full of interviews,reviews and editorials. If you want more information on the magazine, please e-mail PROGnosis1@aol.com or Warmwetos@aol.com. Thank you very much and sorry if I offended anyone for the "pseudo-non" DT content! Tony K :{)}

I'll let someone else post the spoilers if they want to... I'm just pasing on some mofre information I gathered around the busses.

DT will be back sometime in the spring to do another show. Fates said that they might be around sometime about then with a full set.

Derek is from Santa Cruz! (yay!) He hasn't lived here in about 10 years, though. He's a nice guy. I wouldnt' mind if DT kepy him as a regular.

Mike confirmed that they are going into the studio in April to record ACOS, and they will be releaseing an EP with it, Eve and To Love Forever. The last two will be the already recorded versions from the Awake sessions, so they will have Kevin on them.

I asked John M. if he planned to do more lyric writing to fill in for the Kevin Gap, and he said that he'd like to. I gave him encouragement, saying that LTL and Lifting SHadows were great songs, and he seemed happy. Everyone encourage John! Get him to write more lyrics! :)

One of the stage guys seemed impressed that I bought all 3 shirts. He stood there applauding me saying "golf clap!" I was amused as I handed over the 81 bucks.

That's all I can think of for now. Hello again to all the Ytsejammers I met last night!

This EP idea sounds great! I guess when Brian Cox gave them the Ytsejam digests they saw what we wanted (the bootleg stuff, studio versions) and have decided to deliver. I guess all of us won;t be able to ask them after the concerts, "Are you going to record A Change Of Seasons?" Can't say I blame them. Mybe if we talk to them, they will release a version of WDADU with James on all the vocals, you never know.

To the person who didn't want Derek to stay on, I can see his point about too much rock influence, but if Myung is citing Levin as his new favorite bass player, pretty soon he could be the most progressive elements, "Dream Theater featuring Myung on Chapman Stick", that would be wild.

I'd recommend the Early Warning tape to Dream Theater and Queensryche fans, mail mark@gap.gsu.edu for info on the tape, I believe it is $6 US funds. I just got mail from him a couple of days ago, he said they are trying to get out new material next year if finances hold.

    Later,

    Mike

Does anyone out there not have this disc yet that wants it?- I will entertain any offers for CD for CD trades, tapes for CD trade, straight out cash for CD - amd please don't insult me - it really is brand new, and I am not ready to take a huge loss on this investment.

On the subject of Domnici v LaBrie - I believe LaBrie is the best singing voice I have ever heard in my life. Dominici doesn't necessaraly SUCK, but he is (in my opinion) quite average. LaBrie also is about as energetic as someone can be.

    HI, there!

Here the first (I think so) info on DT tour dates in Germany :

    February 2 - Bielefeld February 3 - Nuernberg February 4 - Muenchen February 6 - Stuttgart February 7 - Leipzig February 8 - Hannover February 10 - Offenburg or Offenbach (*) see below February 11 - Duesseldorf February 25 - Rendsburg February 26 - Berlin February 27 - Bremen March 1 - Hamburg

    (*) explanation :

For February 10, two different sources list two different places. I don't know which is the right one, so any information on this is appreciated. I hope it is Offenbach, because it is the only concert in the Rhine/Main area and I want to go there.

    Bye !!!

    - Andreas -

P.S. any further info on the EP that will be released next year?

    Hi everyone,

I had an awesome time at the show. The music was great, the show was great, the guys were great, and I got some great pictures. They're available via the WWW at http://www.teleport.com/~boerio/dt/

I will be posting a review of the show shortly. I've been SWAMPED at work lately.

Someone responded to my comments on some of the posers out there that call themselves DT fans. I guess I was overeacting to the particular show I was at. In Green Bay, the response to the WDADU stuff was nill. They were clueless. (I would've screamed my head off, but I was taping the show for my historical archives) I realize that at the time it was only available as an import, BUT it was available in 89/90 as a normal US release. WHERE WERE THESE PEOPLE THEN? It just seems that a whole bunch of people jumped on the bandwagon when Pull Me Under got some airplay on Mtv and radio.....so many people are trendy out there and dictate their listening habits towards whatever someone feeds them. If I did that I'd never like half the bands I'm into now. (King Crimson, Saga, Marillion...) You wouldn't believe how many people I tried to influence and have them get into DT early on. (Like the guys at Spirit of Rush did) I guess I'm boasting because I was into them early on...but so be it. As someone said out there...we can say we saw them on the Awake tour 10 years from now and we'll look pretty nifty. (I admire the HELL out of people that saw Rush in the '70's) I kind of wish I saw them on the shows they did for WDADU (Or even with Collins!) but as I told my friend in Cleveland, we'll have to fly out east to do it. (Such was an immpossible task for a junior in High School)

Well, just let me end by saying I'm glad that people caught on with their second album and it hasn't taken people 5 or 6 albums to see the greatness in the band. If IAW had bombed they probably wouldn't have toured the states....what a travesty that would have been.
