Well, I guess the "membership" has spoken. Not really much to my surprise.

Just to touch upon what a few people said--

"Didn't you see all the new DT info in here last week?"

I saw several posts touting the new album would be released on Oct 4. I
already knew about the date before it hit the mailing list.

"There is not mu DT activity right now, so we're just going to talk about
    anything"

Cheesy excuse for a lack of creativity on your part. No new DT info?? Why
not discuss past info? There lots of things that went on in the Majesty/DT_
but_before_they_had_a_perm_singer days which could be discussed.

Regardless -- I'm not going to beat a dead horse. Since this group is
unmoderated, all the non-DT posts will continue, as they have for past year
I've been on this list. I quess you college kids have the time to read all
    of this stuff..I do not.

    Have fun..

    >

Actually, I like the fact that we talk about other bands besides DT
sometimes. I found out about DT because some people on the Marillion digest
(Freaks) were talking about DT and pointed me in this direction. On this
list I found out about a number of other bands that I listen to now (like
Enchant, Inferno, etc...). I'm very glad that people posted about those
bands -- it gave me an opportunity to try out new stuff when I wouldn't
    have got to otherwise.
It's true that some bands (like Rush and maybe Marillion) have enough
fans that people can go to their own list, but that's certainly not true for
relatively unknown bands like Magellan, Enchant and Inferno. I think its
great that we can talk about those bands in this forum -- we learn about new
music and can support other small bands and help make them into the next
    Dream Theater.
Also, I know for a fact that Inferno opened up for Dream Theater at
least once, and the DT members are fans of Magellan's music (and they've done
and interview together I think). So, there are at least some DT connections
    here.
I do agree with you that the other band discussions should not
dominate the list, but I don't think that's the case. Remember that right
now many of the regular subscribers are home for the summer so traffic is
rather low. That makes the discussions of other bands seem more dominant.
Still, given the benefits (IMHO), I think it's worth it if I have to skip
a few messages that I don't care about now and then.

Here's the question for ya. What if you were stuck on a desert island and
could only have ONE Dream Theater SONG (not a whole album) to listen
to for the rest of your life?

I also indicate were the song is from ie, Another Hand/Killing Hand from
Live at the Marquee, or Change of Seasons from Dance of Eternity, yes
    bootlegs can be used to.

I think that I would probably have to pick Learning to Live from I&W's.
It's just an incredible song! I think it was discussed here before about
LtL being the perfect song. I would have to agree.

Please post your answers here! Would anyone out there want to compile
all of this info and make a survey or something out of it? I don't have
the time to do it myself.

    >

Buck, I think you're going off on your own tangent here. "Totally out of
control"? Where do you get that from? There's still quite a bit of great
    info about DT rolling through.

Being the list supervisor, here is my view:

If you want ALL DT information and NOTHING ELSE, read net news and scan
the subject lines. A good enough news reader can do this for you.

If you want to get all the latest DT INFO, usually before ANYONE ELSE,
and also have the opportunity to discuss DT and *** DT RELATED ***
    topics, read this digest.

Personally, I love the ability to be able to reach 400 people with
similar GREAT taste in music instantly. And there are plenty of bands
that I might never have given the time of day if people on this list
hadn't recommended them. I agree that there is a point of going to far.
For example, the Rush vs. DT argument is a little stupid and very long
winded, and of course could never be resolved. But I also think it's cool
that most people here respect others opinions, and are usually pretty
    objective about things.

So, I say - go off on your "damn tangents" people! If *I* dont want to
read it, *I* can always skip over it. It's not too difficult.

    IMHO, of course! :)

Actually, for the most part, I think we are on topic. And about discussing other bands, well, therearen't a LOT of bands like DT, so some people would like to know what bands sound like them. What's wrong with that? Besides, there's been a LOT of talk about the new album. And to be honest, if I hahd a choice between reading this stuff, or reading the Rush v DT stuff, this stuff is MUCH more relavent, right? :) Chris

I AGREE! Shure I am also interested in Fates Warning and so on and so on..... But these discussions that are not DT are pretty much in the last weeks (see the Kings X mails only...) and I didnt subscribe to the list to discuss these topics! If I want to I can read at alt.music.* more then enough or subscribe to another list that deals with Kings X or fates. So I d say a bit discussion or news about the new Fates warning or magellan record is fine - but not as much as there were in the last weeks. That was definitly too much....

Since Dream Theater isn't doing that much at the moment, besides recording, there isn't much else to talk about is there?? Repetition of old facts is not only boring but a waste of time. Well, although I would like to have mostly DT news, right now, there just has not been too much news... I mean, no tour, no CD, only a few pieces of info about the new one, and occasional spottings... That, plus, with alot of bands, there is no other source for info... If there was a FW mailing list, yes, I would be on it, and hope for more info, but this list seems to be the only source for info...

You for got the several posts about the new album.

]Lesse, we have various strings on NON Dream Theater bands going on in this ]mailing list -- King's X, Rush, Magellan, etc.

Yup sure do. Part of the reason I'm on this list. I like to hear about similar bands. I don't read a.r-n-r.m.p, so this works. My own survey showed that most of the people hear like metal and prog, so I can find out about bands I wouldn't know about otherwise.

]Excuze me, but isn't this the DREAM THEATER mailing list??? Am I asking too ]much to request the reades of this list to restrict their posts to DREAM ]THEATER???? I know better. I would not know about this band, Dream Theater, had it not been for w2 different mailing litts (lit)(lists!) , namely Paperlate (yes, the GENESIS amiling list!) (and ) Freaks, the MARILLIUN mailing list! So I have no problems whatsoever with a bit of cross-chatter. I'm glad that you know what the good metal-prog bands are out there, but most of us don't have your omniscience. Ytsejam is the best way I know of (and the most efficient) to find bands I might be interested itn. So, what are the best metal-prog bands?
