I must agree with Scott... I joined this group for Dream Theater discussion
and info... all ive heard in the last 2 weeks is Rush vs. Dream Theater
who is better... who has better technique, sound, style
i honestly dont give a fuck... somehow i think the point has been missed
entirely of what this group is for....
im not going to unsubscribe, but i think maybe we should go back to
the original purpose...

> Sleep)...they all blend very well.
Well, that's true to some extent, but when I listen to things like the
huge double-bass parts in "A Fortune in Lies" for example, I consider that
part to be "driven" by the drums. Or when the whole band is following a
chunky guitar as in much of "Pull Me Under," I feel like the guitar is doing
the "driving". I'm just talking about the bass stepping out and asserting
itself for a change, not just in brief solos. It happens every once in a
while ("Take the Time," "Learning to Live") but I still don't feel like I'm
getting a full sense of John Myung as a musician.
I just thought of another good Myung moment: the runs underneath the
first guitar solo in YtseJam. Great stuff! The problem is I can barely
hear it.
> This isn't Primus here. The guys in DT all complement each other.
Never said it was. But if you want to hear some great band arrangements,
listen to Primus. If you get beyond the "Les is the bass god" syndrome, you
can hear how each instrument is usually playing off of the others, keeping a
well-defined role while staying out of the way of the rest. Complementing
each other doesn't mean one player should have to keep it simple while the
others play complex material over the top. I think what Dream Theater needs
is some shaking up in the bottom end. :-) Myung should be up to it, if he
can just rescue his bass sound from the depths of the mix. It could make
the music even more complex and interesting than it already is (imagine
that!).
I suppose this is personal preference to some extent. In general, I
prefer complex counterpoint between instruments rather than straight unison
or harmony. That's something I'm constantly exploring/struggling with in my
music and my band. The challenge is to have all of these parts playing off
of each other, and still keep the song grooving.
> Try to imagine Learning to Live without that bassline.
OK, I did. That kind of bass playing is certainly a step in the right
direction, but you won't catch me humming along to it (not that that means
anything). I still love you John, just get out from under those guitar
riffs and show us what you can do!

Okay here's what I've done here... I put together a montage of
Neil Peart's drum solos over the years, running about 84 minutes, that
covers a lot of ground and includes a lot of gems.... a sampler:
Neil's first ever solo with Rush in Pittsburgh, 8/4/74
Fly By Night tour solo
"The Professor" solo from 2112 and AFTK tours, from Fresno, 11/29/76
In The Mood + Solo, from the Hemispheres tour, from Holland, 6/4/79
"Captain Braino" solo from the P.Waves tour, from St.Louis, 2/14/80
YYZ Solo from the Moving Pictures and Signals tours
Red Lenses solo from the p/g and P.Windows tours, from N.Y., 9/28/83
The Rhythm Method, FULL 7:13 version from Stuttgart, Germany 5/5/88
Neil Peart's the Pieces of Eight from Modern Drummer Magazine
The Rhythm Method '92 with a LOT of new stuff, from Oakland 1/31/92
Counterparts Solo '94 with even more new stuff from Phoenix 2/1/94
I am glad to offer this montage tape to all Ytsejam readers,
however I am not Mother Teresa and I need to have some way of
compensating for the time and money I'll be spending to make this happen
for all of you. I've had about TEN emails already on it and I will try
and get these out ASAP. Basically the terms are that I will either trade
even over for a bootleg of Rush or DT that I do not already have (list
available upon request) or for TWO blank c-90's, and we use cro2 tapes by
default.
EASY solution: Send me two blank cro2 c-90's with a note that you
want the Neil Peart Solo Montage, and your address and so forth, and that
you heard it from Ytsejam, and I'll have it on its way out to you the
next day parcel post. Cheap, easy, and fast.
Again this covers the Neil Peart Solo Montage tape, 84 minutes of
Peart solos from 1974 to 1994. All the important solos are included.
That's about all I need to mention, I think.

Are we the only ones who think that Charlie's voice is much more suitable for
DT's music than James's?
Ok Charlie didn't have the same power in his voice that James has, but at
least he sounded special. He made the music sound like what we think DT
should be all about, symphonic metal. When you hear James sing "Killing Hand"
on LATM, you want to weep in your bed. His terrible high screams totally
eliminates all the emotions that Charlie brought into the song. Another
thing is his annoying vibrato, that in no way can replace Charlie's great
symphonic singing. BRING BACK CHARLIE!!!

Hello all fellow DT lovers!
Today a question sprang to my mind, a question that I think I haven't seen
discussed or answered anywhere. Here it is:
I believe the full title to the subject song is "Metropolis, part I - The
Miracle and the Sleeper". Does anybody know of any other parts to this song?
Maybe part II will be included on the fortcoming album? Maybe the full lyrics to
Metropolis were written when recording IAW, but not all of the music and then
they just put part I on that album? Well, lots of maybe's and no answers... I think it would be interesting if you could fill me in with your opinions on
my thoughts. Bye for now.

For any of you in the southwestern Ohio area, I was there last week and I saw more DT boots (labeled as imports, of course) than I have anywhere else. I found the Majesty Demos, Dances of Eternity, and Home Sweet Home at one store (of course, being short on cash and the fact that cool little record stores don't accept out-of-state checks, I couldn't buy any :-() I did find Queensryche's "Unplugged and Other Stories" at another store. Also, the first DT shirt I found (aside from the ones at the concert for way too much money) was in another little place in Springfield, OH called something like Dream Merchants (kinda nifty, huh?)

(Comparisons to DT >or Rush are okay) > Well, I am a big fan of Magellan so take my descriptions with a grain of salt. I personally don't think that Magellan has a sound that is all that similar to either Rush or Dream Theater. Their music is more keyboard oriented, and I hear influences of Yes, Kansas and probably some Rush. But, they have a more hard-edged, driving sound than either Kansas or Yes (and not as heavy sounding as Dream Theater) (IMHO). There are some definite similarities in other ways though. Magellan's music is very energetic and has cool time changes and interesting rhythms. They work dynamics into their music quite well, and their lyrics are intelligent and interesting. They impressed me from the start with their music -- it's very enjoyable but also interesting enough to remain enjoyable after many listens. I'd recommend either of their albums: "Hour of Restoration" or "Impending Ascension". They are both fairly hard to find, so let me know if you have trouble and I could point you to some mail-order places that might have them. Ranjit has Magellan's "Hour of Restoration" on tape for $2.95 if you want an inexpensive introduction to them. Just send email to him at ranjit@netcom.com and tell him you'd like that tape. He usually replies within a week. He also has Dream Theater's "Live at the Marquee" and WDADU for good prices. BTW, I talked with Wayne Gardner from Magellan a while ago and he mentioned how they admired Dream Theater's music, and that they were considering adding some more hard edge to their sound. I think that will be interesting, though i hope they don't lose their own sound which I like very much. Let me know if you have more questions.
