    > you aren't playing bass...

Mein gott. Please don't make such ignorant, generalizing statements
without some justification. Do you mean to say all of the bass players of
the 60's-70's-early 80's, before the advent of active pickups, "weren't
playing bass"? Ever listen to the recorded bass sounds of oh...Paul
McCartney? Jack Bruce?? Chris Squire?? Need I call your attention to the
many great bassists of today who still play with passive pickups? Check out
Mike Watt of Minutemen and fIREHOSE fame for the *MANLIEST* bass tone
    around.
Let's get something straight. All active pickups do is boost the signal
coming from the bass. For example, turning the tone knob on a passive
Fender P-bass will only cut the treble frequencies. Using the controls on
an active bass you can boost the treble and/or the bass. Bottom line: if
you've got a crappy bass sound, active or passive pickups alone aren't going
    to solve your problems.

    > Lee should've stuck with the Steinberger, or the original black Wal, not
    > the red one... The bass sound on Counterparts is because of Peter
    > Collins, not Fender instruments...

What does that mean? That Peter Collins can work some kind of magic on
bass sounds that no one else can understand? It's called EQ and
amplification. When you've got a straight signal from a Fender J-bass, you
can shape it into all manner of tones using everything from effects and
signal processers to direct injection into the mixing board. On
Counterparts, I think most of the heavy bass sounds came from putting the
bass through an old overdriven Ampeg head. IMHO, you shouldn't look back to
the Wal, or even the Steinberger for the classic Geddy tone. Go to Moving
Pictures-era Rush, when he was using the Rickenbacker 4001 (also the J-bass).
    Passive pickups I might add.

    > I think a lot of Myungs sounds comes from the Bartolini pickups, which
    > are excellent. Steinbergers come with EMG's, which I guess if they
    > are like their guitar pickups, produce a lot of high-end. Don't
    > all Tobias basses come with Bartolini's? They are amazing. A friend
    > of mine put them in his Ibanez 6-string...

Umm, would you mind directing me to some of those excellent Myung tones?
As I've been saying, I always thought Myung was pretty much buried in the
mix on WDADU and I&W. This is partly due to the mixing process, partly his
bass sounds, and partly arrangements. I do hear some improvement on the LiT
video and some live bootlegs I've heard, so from what I can tell, John
Myung's bass tone is just beginning to come into its own. Whether or not he
uses active pickups is only part of the matter.
Don't get me wrong, as a bass player who is deeply in love with his
*extremely* active Kubicki Factor bass, I would never go back to passive
pickups again. I just wanted you to know that you can't attribute a bass
sound to the pickups, just as you can't pin it down to the strings, the amp,
the woods used in the fingerboard, etc. All these things, together with a
great bass player, combine to make a distinctinve bass sound. And IMO, John
Myung is still on his way to finding his voice in Dream Theater.

    Now HERE's a scary thought....

Let's face it... I&W kicks ass. (I have yet to get a copy of
WDADU, so I can't really say if it's better or not.)
In fact, everybody I know who has heard the album (and just
about everyone here) has one of two opinions on the album:

1.) "Greatest thing since sliced bread"

2.) "huh huh... huh huh... this sucks..."

Hmmm... I only know of four other albums that generate
    a love/hate reaction this intense:

    -Rush, "Moving Pictures"
-Led Zeppelin, "Houses of the Holy"
    -Pink Floyd, "The Wall"
    -Boston, "Boston"

    Anybody here sense a trend?

Well, this question is more for out international readers... I was
just watching a video from Toronto, and James mentions something about
the Another Day video making the Power30 on MuchMusic. I also know
that on the Consciously Unreal CDs from Italy, James mentions that I&W
was votes CD of the year... The letter I got from the fan club
mentions that LaTM hit platinum in Japan. my question is this: Is DT
pretty big in your country? I mean, all of this outside of the US,
with so little coverage here... What is the attitude towards DT in
your countries... (I am not sure exacly how many international readers
there are here). I'd love to hear what you have to say...

No no, *Moore* is god. The others are just, like, angels or something.

No DT song is "driven" by any particular instrument (except Wait for Sleep)...they all blend very well. A DT bass part memorable in itself? There are several in Learning to Live, especially at the end...the solo in Metropolis (you should SEE him play this...it's inhuman), parts of Take the Time, Pull Me Under, the Killing Hand...all over the place...no song (except maybe Learning to Live) is really written to spotlight the bass. This isn't Primus here. The guys in DT all complement each other.

    > Songs where the > bassline is so important that the song wouldn't be the same without it.

Try to imagine Learning to Live without that bassline.

    > Well, the other day I had a thought about DT - wouldn't it be great if the > band lengthened the keyboard solo in Take the Time live? I don't usually > like it when bands do radically different versions of songs live, but a solo > about twice as long or maybe more of the current Take the Time keyboard solo > would be awesome, wouldn't it?

Yes. That's my one complaint about DT...with that much talent, they should improvise a little more. When they do it's amazing.

I just got their tape, Hour of Restoration. These guys are great, most of you DTers would like them a lot. They have some similarities to DT, shifting time signatures with lots of energy. More keboards, good vocal harmonies also. I can sense a definite Yes influence also. The drums are sequences, but they did a real good job of it. Not mechanical sounding. This is one of my favorite purchases in a while.

Well, here in Montreal I've never heard of them on the radio. I don't have cable, so I don't know about their videos playing on MuchMusic or MusiquePlus. Without the newsgroup alt.rock-n-roll.metal.progressive, I wouldn't know they exist. I have a friend who's a DJ at the rock radio station in Montreal, the place most likely to play DT if it would play here, he told me I'm not the only one to ask for DT, but the station doesn't play them. It's funny because I'm always bugging him about groups they don't play, like DT & Marillion.

Difficult to make out.... When I&W was released in (I think) 1992 (or so) I seemed to be the only one here in munich to care about DT. One year later DT suddenly spreaded over the city...I think everybody who saw them live (they were 2 times in munich for images and words) was absolutely convinced...not many pepople now DT at all, but I know of several people who know and admire them. Their still not playing in big halls, but their CDs are much more visible in the stores... But I never heared them on the radio or saw them on TV...no airplay at all... besides from radio xanadu, the evening after the first DT-concert: "...amazing performance...maybe the major event of the year..."

    I have a request....

With all the traffic on the list lately it is getting very large. For those of us getting the digest this can be a major pain. The last digest was over 1100 lines. If what I want to read is in the middle or end and I want to skip the endless comparisons or screens of tablature(sp) I have no way to do that besides hit space a hundred times (and at 2400bps this is really a major pain). Can we set the digest to automatically split up the large digests into 2 or 3 shorter parts? Or maybe put the lengthy Tabs in their own section or on ftp.

    Thanks..

For DT related content I have a ? on boots... I'm doing some trading to get them now but I'm wondering what the average price people are paying for the CDs is? When I finally found a place that had boots the 2CD one was $66 and single CDs were 30s .. This is way too steep for me.. I would expect to pay mid 20s for singles. How much do you/ would you pay?

I thought that DT would be bigger in canada, since James is from Toronto. Which reminds me: i have an interview with James that he did for MEAT magazine (a very good Toront publication). It has some interesting info in there about james (for instance his real name is Kevin), and also it lists a few bands that james sang for, before joining DT.
