hmm, i was in poland, last summer, and i told one of my friends there
to check out DT. he mailed me a few months later that he found Images
and Words, and he really likes it, but couldn't find any other stuff.
so the good friend that i am, i sent him some stuff, including the
dances of eternity boot. He'll get it in the next couple of weeks,
and i think he will love DT even more.

All right, I admit to just getting into DT with IAW. Finally, the rock
band that I had been searching for has come together-fantastic musicianship
in a hard-rock setting. All right, we all know how great they are, but
after reading this list for a few weeks, it seems there are a large number
of bootlegs out there. My problem is that I can't seem to find any of
them! Does anyone know of a place to get them in the DC/MD/VA area or
does anyone know of a good mail-order house that has them? I'd really like
to hear more of this amazing band. Thanks in advance.

I just got that bootleg, and I think it was recorde from the general area
near the sound board, but it definetly wasn't direct from the sound board
(or at least I hope it wasn't). The quality isn't that great, but the
vibe is excellent, and it's a good show!!! I'd definetly get it if I were
you (the "not so good" quality of the cd makes it a little more like you
were there).

Subject: Re: A very random question
Who knows, my guess would be that it's just Myung (it's easy to get
really good percussive effects out of a bass), but it would also make
perfectly good sense that it's a sample from either the keyboard, or
triggered by Mike's drum kit. With all of the cool recording techniques
that are out there (it varies from producer to producer), nothing
surprises me; heck it could be anyone in the band, and any of the
instruments (if it is a sample, all you need is something to trigger it).
This also brings me to a point that was brought up earlier, the question
of whether or not Mike actually played the drums on the CD (I&W). I've
studied the recording process/tricks intensely, and even though the
sounds are sampled, that doesn't mean that Mike didn't play. In order to
trigger the samples, a signal of some sort must be sent to the modual
that contains the sound, thus a michrophone in front of a drum would
trigger the sampled sound. So all in all, he did play on the album, it's
just not his kit that you are hearing, it's someone elses (or one he
programmed). This is the same thing for guitarists take for example the
Digitech GSP-Legend a George Lynch Preset is just a sample of his guitar
sound, and when your playing a song using that preset, it is still you
playing the guitar. I just thought I'd clear this up a bit, also when in
doubt, watch him live (you can't fake playing the drums in a live
situation). That's all for now, Party On Fellow Dt Fans!!!

Hi there... I am posting this to several digests that I am on, so you

wondering if anyone knew anything about the laws behind bootlegs... I
have heard different things from different people... I have heard that
it is legal to own and trade tapes, but not to sell them... I am not
sure about buying them. Someone also told me that if anyone (police,
or maybe even record companies) found out that you are selling them,
they can confiscate your entire collection... Does anyone know
anything about this, or the laws behind them... Also, if selling
tapes (and CDs) are illegal, how do bootleg shops stay open, how do
publications like GOLDMINE Magazine stay around, and how are there
record fairs across the country where people sell material... Any
help is greatly appreciated...

i posted earlier about the new "dream out loud" boot i found. i think i have determined it to not be a soundboard, but rather a very good tape off the radio. it was definitely recorded off the soundboard originally, because alot of the stereo effects are very clear. but, during one song (wait for sleep) you can hear a slight buzzing, like the fm reception was cheesing out. it only lasts a minute or so, and the rest sounds fine. but, michael burstin says he has a tape off the radio, and it has the radio call letters announced between songs at times. the cd doesn't have this. maybe the show was broadcast to the radio station, via who knows what, some kind of commercial frequency, where it was mixed for radio broadcast, then retransmitted, and someone at the radio station tape the incoming broadcast. this is my guess, so it was recorded when it was piped in, and not after it was broadcast over their rf. if anyone knows anything concrete about the origin of this recording, please tell me, i am curious now. but, it does sound awesome. even better than "the dance of eternity" at times. the version of "status seeker" is great, with a new intro. "pup" or "puppies on acid", the new intro to "take the time" is also included. the galactic cowboys singing backup on "take the time" is also there, since james talks about it, but i can't really hear them at all. for all you galactic cowboys/king's x fans:
i talked to the guys in king's x last thursday for about 15 minutes. got various things signed, and had the opportunity to ask them many questions. i asked ty tabor about the cowboys. he said that they had recorded a few new songs, but had found absolutely no response from any record companies. (they got dropped from geffen last year). i figured atlantic might pick them up, since they are behind king's x so much, but they said is probably wouldn't happen. oh well. anyway, the king's x tour with pearl jam is definitely happening. they are going to headline a little bit starting tonight in austin (i will be there!) then finish up the scorpions tour, then tour (possibly in outdoor amphitheaters and maybe stadiums) with pearl jam in the summer. i'm not the biggest pearl jam fan in the world, but it is a hell of a lot better than touring with the scorpions or ac/dc. at least maybe they will bring in lots of new fans. i got some insight on the music business while talking to them, also. i talked to doug pinnick about an interview i had just seen in the houston post. i asked him some things about it, and he said he didn't even know he had been interviewed. he was just talking on the phone, and had now idea it was being taped. the interview went on to become a front page (of the weekend section) article. anyway, he also said that they barely make enough money to put out another album. all this after 5 albums. i just started wondering if dream theater is in a similar status. well, if anyone wants details of the king's x stuff that i found out from them, email me.
later...

According to an interview with James Labrie in the March/April edition of M.E.A.T., James LaBrie was the first choice for being the new Iron Maiden vocalist. Here is the quote:
" I was the first in line to get the Iron Maiden gig," reveals LaBrie. " Steve Harris and the management would be out at our gigs- in New York, in England- and it was pretty wild. The guys in my band(DT) are going, 'You know why these guys are here? They're checking you out to be the new guy,' and I'm like, right... sure! Then our manager and our tour manager went out to dinner with (Maiden bassist) Steve Harris and (Maiden management employee) Merick Mercuiriadis, and the Maiden guys were joking around about who they wanted as the new singer for Maiden, and they said, James LaBrie. Our manager began laughing, then he realized they were serious. He said, 'Well I'll tell you that James isn't going to go,' and they're like 'Well how do you know? Money talks.' They just laughed it off at the time, but it was tense."
Think that was weird? Check out the next quote from the same article and page(31).
" And then, a couple of guys in Judas Priest show up at our European gigs," informs LaBrie. " It's wild! Especially when you grew up listening to these band's music, and then you're meeting them, and suddenly you're under consideration for their singing jobs. I think that Iron Maiden is a great band, and I hope they come back strong with their new singer Blaze Bayley, and just blow everyone away."
Weird eh?!?

Close minded and disrespectful?? I think you missed something. I've been flaming people not because their opinions differ from mine, but because they've been flaming people on subjects they either know nothing about or think *they* know everything. Heh.
> disrepectful to other people's opinions. Just say what you have to > say and leave it at that. These negative vibes are gettin to me.
Say what you have to say, get flamed, and leave it?? I don't think so :)
Beyond all that, there's another small problem, in that somehow my messages always seems to show up after a digest is sent out, and not in "real-time", as others seem to do. So, therefore, by the time you see what comes from me, its been a couple days since I sent it.....

"Is the new "Impending Ascension" by Magellan available in the U.S.????????"
Yes, try the mail order co. called Sights & Sounds. I don't have the address handy but you can e-mail the owner to receive a catalog:
It's only available in the States as an import, though, but this guy has really good prices. Check it out!
" BTW, I talked with Wayne Gardner from Magellan a while ago and he mentioned how they admired Dream Theater's music..."
Actually, I talked to Trent Gardner (keys, vocals, songwriter, and brother of guitarist Wayne) and he told me an intersting story regarding DT. I think it was a writer from Kerrang! that did a little piece on BOTH bands. It was one of those things where a guy from one band would critique the music of a guy from another band and vice versa. Well, this writer picked Trent and Mike Portnoy for this particular article. Apparently, the writer was trying get the two bands into a little rivalry but it wound up being a mutual admiration society! Both guys dig each other's band's music so there you go! Yes, Trent, as does Wayne, loves DT's stuff and expressed to me the wish that Magellan had the $ to get the kind of production as DT.
Slainte!
