For those of you who are Alex Skolnick fans, check out Micheal Manring's
new album titled _Thonk_. Alex plays guitar on about half the songs.
Cool progressive metal and fusion using mainly bass, guitar, and drums.
Somewhat like Satriani but more progressive and jazzy. Good to hear that
Alex will be recrding with Savatage.

Progressive metal that I like, in no particular order...

    1. Queensryche (fave is Operation Mindcrime, best before that is Rage For Order)2. Dream Theater (fave is Images And Words)
    3. Saviour Machine (they only have a self-tilted CD, but it`s totally superb)
    4. Veni Domine (Queensryche`ish, one CD called Fall Babylon Fall, excellent)
    5. Galactic Cowboys (fave is Space In Your Face)
    6. Kings X (fave is Faith, Hope, Love)
    7. Savatage (fave is Streets: A Rock Opera)
    8. Sacred Warrior (Queensryche`ish, last two Wicked Generation, Obsessions are
                       very good)
    9. Believer (very heavy indeed!, last two CD`s Sanity Obscure and Dimensions are both excellent. Where else would you hear a 21 minute
operatic/orchestral piece, with crunchy guitar riffs and very
                 weird time sigs.....)
    10. Tourniquet (progressive speed metal, rather weird at times, all three CD`s
                    are excellent...)
    11. Conception (neo-classical progressive metal... pretty good... they have 2
CD`s, "The Last Sunset", and "Parallel Minds".. the latter is
                    good in particular..)
    12. Yes (fave is Close To The Edge)

Progressive Bands that I don`t particularly like

    1. Rush (liked Counterparts, but others I heard were pretty awful)
    2. Fates Warning (who in my opinion sound absolutely nothing like Dream Theater. the lyrics didn`t seem to fit the music too well, and the
guy ended up forcing the vocal lines, especially on
Awaken The Guardian.. that`s my major gripe.. it ended up
                      being irritating..)
    3. Yes (the poppy 90125 era... didnt like that stuff too much...)

Disclaimer: I did not say any of these bands were not good bands... they
probably are... they`re just not my cup of tea..... there is an awful lot
of stuff I think is much worse than these....

    Anyway time to go....

I was wondering - I have been having a LOT of difficulty getting any
type of DT bootleg in the area (which is unusual considering I'm 5 min. from NYCbut in any case I can't seem to find them...... So I have a few questions...

First, does anyone know of anywhere in the NYc Metro. area that has any
    of these things.....
Second, I really would like to get as much as I could of DT's stuff,
especially DoE, (since I was there for the show) - the problem is that I really
don't have that much stuff to trade ( I have a Malmsteen demo and boot of one
of his shows, but the sound quality is HORRIBLE ) ....so I was wondering if
there were any kind souls out there who would make a copy of anything they got
(if I sent them a blank tape or whatever) for me. I know I sound like some
ass who is too lazy to get this stuff myself, but like I said before, I have
been having difficulty even getting the video ( which i finally got) - imagine
my frustration in trying to get a copy of the vocal audition tape!! You see
    my dilemma here......

So if anyone can please help me out, E-mail at the address below, and
tell me what you need (blank tape, what type of reimbursement for services, etc)and I'll be forever grateful (like anyone cares :) ).

                                    Thanks,

I've seen Rena Petrucci's band Meanstreak twice. They are an all-
female metal band. They have one CD that I know of, it's called Roadkill and
is from around 1988. It's straight ahead metal, but not poppy. It's pretty
heavy but not really thrash. I like it. Since then a couple of band members
have changed and their sound has moved more towards the prog metal vein, but
still pretty heavy. They have a 4 song demo tape produced by Mike Portnoy
that is more recent. It's more representative of their current sound(as of the
last time I saw them, last summer, anyway!), including their cover of Heart's
Barracuda(possibly better than the original). There's also a song called Time
Stands Still, note the s at the end of Stands, it's not the same song.
To answer your question, she's a very good guitarist. See Meanstreak
if you can. As an added bonus, when I saw them I met John P. and Mike P. Mike
actually jumped on stage and sang during one of their tunes. The bass player
is his girlfriend. (Or was last summer. . .) I'd like to see them get another
CD deal, they've been working hard for 8 years and they're good too!

Ahem... *raises hand*... no Deb, you're not the only woman on this list,

loud and notorious as some male members of this forum. :)

Knowing there are other female Ytsejam readers and that DT is not the
most popular band among our gender (I have no female friends DT fans, a few
of them sort of like them, other tolerate them), I wanted to ask about your
experience with people's reactions when they find out you are a woman
    - progressive metal fan. One of the most amusing but at the same time quite
annoying is when men are impressed with my musical tastes. Annoying, because
being a woman I am not some half-brainer who is unable to appreciate quality,
more complicated music like Dream Theater's. The second one, even more anoying
is when I am told I enjoy, and I quote "music that young boys like"... Arghhhh!
I will not even comment on that one! Then there are those who simply have no
idea of what I'm talking about...*sigh* Pretty sad state if you ask me...

reread your first post. You made a blanket statement, and you said it
like a jack-ass, and I elaborated on it, that it's not just playing
fast, but playing fast smoothly. Clapton, SRV, and Petrucci have a lot
of fluidity to their playing. that's what makes them good. fluidity is a
major part of emotional playing. this is yet another reason why someone
like, say, kurdt ckobain sucks. His solos are either the verse melody or
banging and feeding back, and it sounds like he'd never picked up a
    guitar before.

Hi there... I had mentioned this before, and after hearing it, can prove that the version of A Change Of Season from the LiLI (disc 2) is not from that show... I was listening to a copy of it, and there are a few things... first, the record level is way off... it is much louder... This doesn't prove it, but James also mentions that they have only performed it a few times live, including in NYC... Well, first of all, LiLI is from one of the first shows on the tour, so they couldn't have performed it live a few times... Also, since it is the he says that they have already performed it live in NYC, that means that it was performed after the Dances Of Eternity show (Limelight). With this, does anyone know where this version of ACOS comes from? It sounds like it is somewhere around New York, but can't be sure...

Hi all... well, I found a copy of Dream Out Loud, so I figured that I'd type up the cool little insert that they have... most of the info is already known, but I like how they put everything...

    >From Long Island come DREAM THEATER, the long sought after missing link between Yes and Metallica. A strange combination you may think? Well, it works, works very well indeed. Fighting against the constant waves of pseudo-grunge bands and sad metal bandwagon jumpers, DREAM THEATER have stuck to their guns over the past six years and refused to compromise, all the time being correct in the knowledge that one day the musical world will catch up with them. In 1993 that dream came true, DREAM THEATER had arrived. It has been a long uphill struggle for the group over the past eight years. Their initial incarnation was in September 1985 when bassist John Myung and guitarist John Petrucci teamed up with young drummer Mike Protnoy and keyboard player Kevin Moore. This enthusiastic four piece went by the name Majesty. A lead singer, in the shape of Chris Collins, was found in March 1986 and the group quickly set about recording their debut demo tape, of which they sold 1000 copies within six months. However, throughout the summer the group were to find out that Chris was unsuitable to the band and he left the fold at the end of November. Almost a year of auditioning vocalists was to pass before new vocalist Charlie Dominicci was recruited with flying colors. By November of 87 a record deal had been struck with the new Mechanic Records label. An album "WHEN DREAM AND DAY UNITE" followed hot on the heels. Majesty were off to a flying start, or so they thought. It had been brought to their attention that there was another group, from Las Vegas, who had been playing the circuit for over ten years and had registered the name. A deal was offered for the trademark rights, but the Vegas team stuck to their guns and the Long Island crew were forced to hand over the mantle. Many new names were tried out, amongst them Glasser, Mi, and Magus, but the final choice was taken from the name of a California cinema complex, DREAM THEATER. With the new name established, the road ahead looked clear, but around the corner lurked new problems. The Nucleus of the group were still far from happy and so more changes had to occur before DREAM THEATER could move onto the next stage of their career. The first to go was the new front man Charlie, who had never really fitted in and secondly an amicable agreement was made to leave Mechanic Records when it was found out that they didn't have enough finances to meet the groups need to tour and promote the album. To find yet another compatible front man took the group almost two years. James LaBrie, late of Winter Rose, was the chosen one. The last piece of the jigsaw had been found. James slotted in perfectly and withing a short period a deal with Atco Records had been secured and a new album, "IMAGES AND WORDS" was ready to hit the streets and re-establish the name DREAM THEATER. 1992 was sure gonna be a good year. With America quickly picking up on the new album, by the summer of 1993 it had almost reached gold. The new kings of long and winding progressive power metal toured constantly throughout the year, completing two sell-out European tours as well as being mobbed Beatles style by adoring fans in Japan. It just goes to prove that by sticking to your guns and not compromising you will find that the world will eventually listen to you. DREAM THEATER are prime examples that persistance pays!!!

I think that this is an awsome description of the band and some pretty cool stuff...

Hi all... I just bought a new CD from the Kiss The Stone label, and they have some an information page inside to do mail order... They appear to own the following companies: Kiss The Stone, Big Music, Cocomelos Records, Nikko Records, plus one only listed as Box Sets. They also have an order form... they charge $22 (flat rate) for a CD, meaning that 2 CD sets cost $44, and triple sets cost $66. They charge $4.50 shipping for the first CD and $2 for the rest. They will accept credit cards (for up to 8 CDs) and international money orders for anything more. I have no idea about the safety of ordering from them, but I would guess that it is safe. They have many different bands listed (Black Crowes, AiC, Dream Theater, Pearl Jam, Satriani, U2, STP, Aerosmith, Metallica, amoung others... too many to list) Now, what I am planning on doing next week when I get back to school is to fax a copy of it to my modem and convert the order form into a .GIF file that I will UUENCODE over to people if they want it. Please send me private email for a copy. Anyway, I know that alot of you have been looking for ways to get bootlegs at a decent price, so here is a chance...

Oh, I almost forgot to mention... first, they have different pricing (CDs and shipping) for Europe and Japan, and 2 if you are in Europe and want to phone or fax, phone number is: (39)541 610556, fax is (39) 541 613948 (they are in Italy, BTW)
