    perhaps what you are hearing is just the transition from the recorded part
    to the live part. as far as i know, at every show since IaW, they have just
    played the part up to that "F#-G-E" directly from the cd, and the band did
    not join in until then. you are probably just interpreting that transition as
    a skip, since they didn't do it very fluidly that night.

    I think I know what you're referring to -- it sounds like the audio
    drops out for an instant, just before the guitar really 'kicks in'? (The CDs
    are out in my car, so I can't check the 40-second mark.) That sounds
    like an edit to me, as if there was something there which was removed.
    Maybe band comments? They might have yanked them for time
    considerations; that first CD, at 77:00+, is LONG by CD standards.

    That's because 1) the intro tape stops too early or 2) Portnoy misses the first hihat or 3) the sound engineer missed to turn on the microphone. I'd vote for 3.
