Actually, I heard that he was from New York. Long Beach in Long Island,
if I remember right from the MEAT magazine interview that somebody was
nice enough to type in. (BTW, to whoever that was, thanks!!!)

Firstly to those who want to take cameras to the gigs...

I would advise against cheap disposable cameras, the results will
probably not be very pleasing. Use a fast film because the lighting
conditions in the average club or venue aren't brilliant. Please, for
the sake of the guys in the band -- Dont use a flash!! Speaking as a
performer myself, flash photograhpy can be very distracting, sometimes
even dangerous. Use the available light instead (thats why you use a
fast film). You are also less likely to get your arms broken by the
security if you don't use a flash.

Secondly my 2cents about the new QR...

I can't believe the sledging of QR both in ytsejam and on the metal
groups! PL is not as bad as everyone has made out. Anybody would think
that we're talking about a new madonna release here!! I reckon that
Promised Land is a step forward for the ryche after Empire, less
commercial, but just as diverse. There are some songs that I haven't
really gotten into yet like Disconnected (doesn't seem to go anywhere)
and Bridge (a little too personal for my liking). However, there are
some utterly kick ass tunes on the disc as well like One More Time, My
Global Mind, Damaged (my personal fave) and Someone Else? The great
thing about QR is that they are constantly progressing (there goes that
word again :), none of their albums sound the same. Compare Mindcrime to
Rage for Order or Promised Land...just chill out people :)

<<IMHO (_only_) however, it's like being pissed that you paid 2 million bucks

for the Renoir, which has 1700 less brush strokes than the Warhol you only paid a million for ;)>>

So, we would agree that it has nothing to do with the quality. But if I bought a Renoir with a sticker that said 'This is the most brush strokes EVER on a painting', then I would rightly be pissed. (well not exactly pissed- but I would say it was a sham).

BTW, now I wonder how cassette sales stack up to CD sales. I get the impression that record companies are very happy with cassettes and many people prefer cassettes. Of course if the profits are better on CD's, then customer preference be damned.

    Hey there all,

I was just curious as to if anybody thinks that after DT and FW join up in St. Louis there will be a set change in the DT show? I mean, hell I'm sure FW will be playing a lot longer than IME has... just a thought :-) I would appreciate any input from you "insiders" :-) Luckly I'll be going to the Kansas City show and will get to see the bands together... Thanks ahead of time. :-)

Now kids...for those of you that are new to the group, we had a MAJOR problem with this sort of thing not too long ago. We had Peart vs Portnoy, and Lee vs Myung...both battles are a total waste of time, and a complete waste of disk space for some YTSEJAMerz. So PLEASE take it to private e-mail! Please note, I'm not a moderator, and I have absolutly no authority to tell you guys what to do...this is just a suggestion! Later all!

If there's enough interest, and everyone really wants to do this, I have some companies who do this sort of thing. I could inquire about the lagality of it, and could most likely get the Cd's pretty cheap (like between 3-7 bucks each depending on art work...if my memory serves me correctly). I (with some help from others) would really enjoy doing this sort of thing, and could easily get access to equipment (as I work for a studio...off and on). Anyone up for it send me (not the list) mail, and as for getting some help, If you're interested, drop me a line (for example, you'd be willing to donate a boot for a week for this, or something). Also, ALL borrowed CD's WILL be returned in exact same condition (given we do go through with this). Later!

No. James didn't sing for Helloween. I heard he was from Canadian band CONEY HATCH (not sure) and they didn't release an album.

First vocalist of Helloween was Kai Hansen (now GAMMA RAY). Second was Michael Kiske (he's seeking solo). And now, Andi Deris (ex PINK CREAM 69).

That's a really good point. It is very obvious (especially on Awake, IMO) that the most major influence to Mike's playing style is Neal.

I remember mentioning that even though I was able to duplicate almost (at least I hope I used the word _almost_ -- I'd hate to think that I'd be expected to play Natural Science after all these years, flawlessly ;) ) all of Neal's stuff, but that writing such incredible drum parts was quite another story. It's easy to get caught up in the technique and forget about the incredible artistic talent it takes to create those parts.

    Neal: 1 Mike: 1

    Next!

    >after hearing the musicianship of DT it made QR seem >obsolete. To be able to compete with masters like Rush or the brilliant >songwriting of DT

The *song*writing is something QR is IMHO better at than DT, DT has great musicians - as you have pointed out, still QR isn't a band with mediocre musicians :-) -, but sometimes they (Petrucci especially) get "carried away" as just play the bloody guitar as fast as he can, "screw melody" (I'm exaggerating on purpose :->). The solo in a QR song, for example, always fits in nicely with the rest of the song, it's not just "Let's see how fast I can play the scales ..."

Though QR and DT may both belong to the "progressive" domain, they're quite different IMHO and both excellent at what they're doing. I see no reason for bashing on PL, never mind *comparing* it to Awake ...

    >>This is starting to get annoying.

    >I believe it is you who is getting annoying! (All that math was unnecessary)

Well, to start, I didn't direct my comments at a person, just the thread, so I think you're beginning to chalk up some points for annoyance yourself by turning this into a personal thing. I think your attitude is unnecessary. The math was there to help to explain the reasons for CD length limitation.

If you really hate that technical stuff, I think there are a couple of fresh posts for you to slam on today...

    >>Seems more likely to me that the record company decided to sacrifice a >>little tape integrity for some extra $$$, than that they are trying to rip >>you off by not including a track on the CD.

    >Excuse me, but I consider not including a track on the cassette "for some extra >$$$", to be identical to "ripping the consumer off." Your post was full of you >contradicting yourself, and the moral to the story is, Scarred should be on the >cassette.

    Contradicting myself? Hmmm...

Well, I'm sure it did appear that I was contradicting myself, as you didn't seem to grasp what I was saying. Let me try again. I was attempting to say that it sounded more like the makers of the Extreme CD were sacrificing the integrity of their cassette (due to the fact that you just can't get durable commercial-grade tape in lengths like that) than that the makers of the DT tape were "ripping you off" by not including Scarred. Yes, it sucks if you don't have a CD player, but as someone else posted, I'd rather get a quality tape that will last longer and miss a song than get the extra song and have to replace it sooner or have it sounding like shit after a month of playing. Just an opinion, though. No need to get defensive or abusive.

    >Even the members of DT are irate about it. They told me.

Good. I think it's a shame it's not on the tape as well, but whether or not the band is pissed is irrelevant to the point.

    >Now we may end this shit.

    Thank you, god.

Yes... it was Philips who made the standard and Bethoven's 9th (the copy they had at least) was 76 minutes so they made it the STANDARD. I can, however hold more.

There was alot of confussion after my show in Baltimore so I failed to get a shirt. Could someone please be so kind as to pick one up for me? I would probably want the one with the album cover. Please write me and we can work out the details.

On a related note, did anyone get any of the new DT hats? How are they? I got one of the black ones from the Images and Words tour. I never wear it though cause its a piece of crap. The little peak on the front of the cap is really high and it kinda looks stupid plus the logo is not centered correctly. Do the new hats of a nice slopped front on them? Please get me a shirt!

From what I think I heard, I think that Portnoy mentioned that he was from Jersey in the HBB interview....I'm not sure though, that's what I heard.....

But it had different lyrics then didn't it? They weren't even sung over the same parts of the song.

I'm pretty sure it's TOWHTSTS that he was supposed to learn for the next show. At one point while I was talking to him, he was talking to some roadie and said something like "and get me those speakers up there, I need to learn that tune," to which I asked, "which tune is that?" and he said "Set the Sun."

Not that I am all that caught up in this whole argument about the maximum length a CD can be due to various compression schemes, but I have a 79:21 minute disc of Eliot Fisk playing Paganini's 24 caprices for violin on guitar (amazing!!) which plays just fine on my very ordinary CD player.. I have a few hundred discs and none of them is longer, so I would say that by pure statistical reasoning that is about the limit for a CD.

Maybe John and John are from Long Island, but Mike said it himself on HBB that he was from New Jersey.

==================>>>>>>> T-SHIRT OFFER EXTRAVENGANZA <<<<<<================= To all those interested in t-shirts, hello once more! I am re-offering all my old shirts, including Paperlate and Dream Theater, since there have been a lot of requests for them. Their descriptions follow. I am also offering a new Fish "Suits" shirt, which is bound (hopefully) to be another winner. Be aware that I am also offering new colors of some styles, so be sure to specify color and size and style when ordering! Style refers to the word in quotes in each descr. title! ie. "Freaks" and "Classic Fish" are styles! Also, I am doing an order of Fish Boxers, for those "undercover" Fish fans. DT logo also available. Anyways, on with descriptions, info, etc...... ============================================================================ "FREAKS" SHIRTS/SWEATS INFO ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Front: The triangular jester 3" tall from the Thieving Magpie album cover. Back: "All the Best FREAKS Are Here" text, written in Zaph Chancery font, except for FREAKS, which is written in old Marillion-logo type font (see Script, Fugazi, etc for reference). COLORS AVAILABLE:

WHITE/ASH with black jester and text. "Freaks" written in burgundy with black trim.

BURGUNDY with off-white jester and text. "Freaks" written in off-white with black trim.

HUNTER Green shirt with same colors as above

BLACK shirt with off white jester and text. Freaks written in burgundy with off white trim. T-Shirts & sweatshirts are available in all colors as listed above.

================================================================================ "Classic FISH" SHIRTS/SWEATS INFO -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Front: The shirt front will be blank except for the left breast where it will read "The Company" in Mark Wilkinson style font. Underneath it will be a Scottish fish playing the bagpipes as seen in the Internal Exile CD liner notes, last page. Back: On the back there will be a large Fish logo in Wilkinson style as seen on the Internal Exile CD. Around the perimeter of this logo will be the words: "The Jester Is Dead! Long Live the Jester!"

    COLORS AVAILABLE:

WHITE/ASH: front design in black; back logo in orange & black with red text around logo. NAVY: front design in off white, back logo in same as white shirt.

T-Shirts & sweatshirts are available in all colors as listed above. ================================================================================ "NewLogo" SHIRTS/SWEATS Info -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Front: The shirt has a snow flake on the left breast from inside the season's end CD booklet(and cover) with the words around it: "Everybody in the Whole of the World Feels the Same Inside" Back: The back has a 9"x9" square Bill Smith Studio logo, with 2 dice in different configurations of 7(such as a 3 and 4) caddy corner in all four corners. Underneath the logo is the quote "i know a place you can't die" from "A collection". This shirt doesn't pertain to the current direction of the band, but a year ago it did and people seem to like it, so I still make it.

    COLORS AVAILABLE:

WHITE/ASH: ice blue snowflake w/black writing on the front. On the back there will be navy logo, black dice and text, with glow in the dark letters in square logo.

NAVY: on a navy shirt, ice blue snowflake w/off white text on the front. Back: ice blue square logo with glow in the dark letters, off white text and dice.

    BLACK: same as navy above.

T-Shirts & sweatshirts are available in all colors as listed above.

================================================================================ "Jester" SHIRTS/SWEATS Info -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Front: This shirt will have a half-toned (50% grey) magpie across the front, approximately 9" in vertical length. Across this will be the old Marillion logo, in red and yellow from the Thieving Magpie album. Back: Across the top will be "Burn a Little Brighter Now" in Black Chancery font in black. Underneath this quote will be a jester in four colors approximately 8" tall. This is also from the Thieving Magpie album.

COLORS AVAILABLE: WHITE/ASH only. T's and Sweatshirts available.

================================================================================ "Suits" SHIRTS/SWEATS Info -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Front: The standard Fish Co. logo will be on the left breast, one color. By this I mean the words "The Company" written over the circular Fish logo. Underneath it will say, "Internet"

Back: Enlarged skull from the 2nd page of the liner notes in "Suits" album. It's eyes and notrils will glow in the dark. The skull should be fairly faithful to the same color scheme-- greenish pale. Around the skull on top will be written "We learned to love, we learned to kill," and across the bottom: "We taught ourselves to rule this world..."

    COLORS AVAILABLE:

WHITE/ASH: front design in forest green. Skull in pale greens and yellows and glow in dark. Back text in dark (forest) green.
