Except for Afterlife which they have said they won't do, as it was
Charlie's song. Other than that, they have only to do Light Fuse and Get
    Away.

Really? Hmmm, guess they decided that it being Charlie's song wasn't

The drum solo (at the end) says "hear the drummer
            get wick-ed"

It was originally in a Public Enemy song (if
you can call it a "song" per se) but don't remember
            the title...

Yeah, it was also done on "Bring the Noise" by
            Anthrax....

Very kewl sample though - really fit into the
solo and blended back into the original song they started
with (which I won't name to spoil)

What else can I say but that the show was
phenomenal! I've seen them twice before but I gotta
say that each time I see them, I like them more and
more, which I didn't think was actually possible....

The opener (I Mother Earth) was pretty
impressive - I kinda expected songs with the drummer
doing your straight time rhythm type, but actually
they grooved pretty well, and were extremely tight all
around. The vocals left a little to be desired, but
            otherwise they were quite good.

Dream Theater came out and basically wowed
everyone...nothing I can say can really describe how
they played - it was totally unbelievable....and I
enjoyed it too for the most part....

From where I was, there was indeed a large amount
of moshing, which kinda pissed me off in that
                    a) you were constantly trying to avoid getting
elbowed in the face (I'm not very tall) :)

                    b) it seemed as though these people just went
there to beat up on each other...

Usually it doesn't bother me, and if there were
more crowd surfing (i think that's what is) I wouldn't
have minded, but the thing was that I know a lot of people
who couldn't make it to the show because of the fact that
the show was sold out to these people who spent the entire
show looking for someone to punch....kinda sad....
but who cares - I got my ticket, eh? :)

I don't think that Derek will be a permanent thing
for DT personally.....His playing was excellent, his solo
was very kewl too...it seemed that he concentrated more on
the totally rough licks (TTT, Metro.) and then forgot to
try and learn Another Day! - he screwed up BAD on that...
otherwise though, he was very tight with the rest of the
            group......

Well, that's all I can write right now,

                                    Al

P.S. - I was there when the guy said that LaBrie used to
song for Helloween, and I am almost positive that
he was wrong....but then again who knows? Anyonw?

P.P.S. - Anyone know the name of John Myung's brother and
if he even has a brother.....I think my friend Vin
and I might have met him...but I don't wanna seem
like an idiot and say we actually did until I get
some kind of info. on it...though for some reason
I do think it was him......

P.P.P.S. - If anyone knows if Kaoru was at the NYC show, was
she up on the front left side of the balcony?

P.P.P.P.S. - one more thing, I met John Petrucci's cousin
as well at Six Flags Great Adventure last night
                         - a pretty kewl guy.....

            - no .sig due to carpal-tunnel from all those post-scripts. :)

I can't believe some of you people complaining about Awake having only 75 minutes and not 76 like the Extreme disc... what the hell do you want?

There are lots of different data on a CD and sometimes the track header can include lots of data which can make the CD track better which might have been done on Awake so that it can't have 76 minutes.

Again, the Extreme CD could have thinner pits, compromising it's data integrity, if you could display the Block Code Error on your CD player, which I highly doubt unless you had a Marantz MkIV Reference unit which costs a minimum $3000 or a Sony Reference Disc machine... or maybe a Sony Disc Replicator which averages $900,000 brand new..., I would guarantee that the Extreme CD would have a higher error rate.

Again, we have the issue of Super-Bitmapping from 20-bit (which the Awake CD was recorded in.) The dithering algorithm probably didn't allow a max 76 minutes.

The current data transfer rate just for reference is 1.45 megabits/sec at 44.1Khz...

Some CD players have dual digital filters (we're talking $400+ audiophile players) that can sample the disc at 2.45 megabits/sec using new 45-bit digital filters that Sony developed. This would allow a theoretical 48Khz sampling emulation, thereby increasing the CD's frequency response at the high end section. (although most discs I would guarantee are not recorded to such extreme standards). This would also increase your D/A converter resolution, making the music sound more warm and real depending on what type and what order noise shaping your CD player uses in it's D/A converter...

If you think all CD's and CD players sound the same... take your copy of Awake down to your local Good Guys or Best Buys or electronic super store and listen to it through headphones on a cheap $99 CD player and then go seek out a Sony ES or Marantz Mk Reference Series player and give it a try... of course if you find a Pioneer Elite Natural Sound player that would be nice too...

Addressing CD compression... you can't do it on an audio CD... we're talking Red Book audio standards... ISO 9660 Red Book standard, which if not complied with, means the CD won't necessarily play on your damn CD player... so again... max music with minimum track headers is 76 minutes, there is no magic that can make a CD have longer than that and be able to play on a regular CD player...

MiniDisc and DCC use a type of compression which is very much like MPEG-II audio standard otherwise known as PASC.

It reduces the number of bits the music is sampled at by "masking" lower db sounds from higher db sounds which are "masked" by the ear...

And for reference, there is no difference of data rates when sampling "surround" encoding and normal music on an audio CD. Dolby Surround encoding is again, an analog encoding recorded and mastered onto a CD. Most of the magic is done in the recording studio to make it sound "surround"...

Fates Warning's Parallel is Q Sound which is again, Analog Space Enhancement... recording and mastered onto CD as a standard audio CD.

Till the day when you can program your CD player, there is no compression, or magic that can make your audio CD have 1000 minutes of music or use a special surround like DTS or Dolby Digital Surround...

44.1 is the rule, which results in 1.45 (or 1.42-1.47 if you're real picky) megabits/sec assuming NO BLOCK CODE ERRORS...

There's your digital audio lesson for the day kids...

Maybe I didn't make myself very clear... Yes.... tracts like Lady Jane and Out of Mind are just great! I love them... great work being done there... but you just can't beat John P.'s guitar solos. :)

I think Damaged could have contained some blistering guitar solos.... but it doesn't. What a shame. Very mellow album, albiet very good.

    I have two comments:

1- Thanks for taking the trouble to bring us these interesting statistics 2- I can't believe Erotomania is so far down!

On a note unrelated to the poll, I think I have finally listened to Awake enough times to express my opinions (I like to listen to things intensively and become very familiar with them before trusting my opinions).

Overall, I don't like it as much as I+W, but it's still amazing. Voices is probably my fave DT tune ever, and Erotomania is up there. While I don't care too much for some of the directions they have headed, I think it is cool that they are trying to be more stylistically diverse.

My complaints about the album are

1.James - That gritty voice thing doesn't work. He has a beautiful, compelling voice and when he tries to sound all raspy I just find myself wishing I could hear his real voice over all the distortion. 2.Mike - I am a real drum fanatic, and I+W is absolutelly my fave drum album ever. His drumming to me is so much less interesting on this album.

But overall a great album. DT is still the best band in existence right now.

Well, I have sorta been keeping quite over the TPL discussion, but I guess that I'll post an opinion also...

Although I have not listened to TPL too much (I still have not taken Awake out of my changer, except to put it into my discman), I do think that it is a good CD...

True, it is not exactly what I expected, I do like it... Songs like Someone Else, Lady Jane and Bridge sound great... I love the piano in Someone Else, almost as much as in SDV... Anyway, as with what I mentioned before when people first posted reviews for Awake... give it some time... and at least a few more listens to get used to the music...

(BTW, I listened to TPL for the first time in a few days (possibly even a week) on Saturday, and I really liked it more than the last time I listened to it... I also realyl started to notice the sax on a few songs... Great sounding)

    Anyway, just my thoughts...

Any scoop on the 12/2 show? Perhaps they are waiting for 12/1 to sell out...

I've never been to the Warfield and am a little curious about the "two drink minimum"/gen. admission thing. I assume you get seated (how else could they enforce a drink minimum?), but are you stuck in your seat for the entire show, or does everyone start moving towards the stage as the show starts?

Add me to the list of detractors of Bay Area rock stations. I have not heard ANYTHING off Awake. I do give KSJO some credit however: they did play PMU once (my first exposure to DT) and I ordered I&W from my CD club the next month... the rest is history.

$17.50 (plus charges) for DT & FW!

I don't know who wrote that Mike Portnoy pisses on Neil Peart but he must not have been thinking. Neil Peart is and always will be the greatest drummer. Everything he does is so original. Mike is good but you can tell that he get his ideas from Peart. One thing I would like to see Peart do that Mike does a lot is use doublebass. Of course who am I to question a god like peart. I guess he feels it doesn't really fit the music so I agree.

Hi everyone! If anyone knows of Europe dates please post them! I just found out that I will be in London from January 2 until May 17. I would love to show up at a London concert and tell JL that I have been following him around the world.

On Tuesday or Wednesday I should be getting back my photos from the Baltimore show. I will let everyone know how they came out as soon as i get them back. I have access to a color scanner. Does anyone have any clue if it can be brought into the digest in anyway? I would love to share them with everyone. ]

One more thought... actually, it is a question. Does anyone know what DT means in "SCARRED" when they say, "Thirty years say we're in this together..." Is it marriage? Religion? any thoughts?

Oh yeah, someone asked if there were any RUSH fans out here. Was it you, Michael Jones? If so, here is the address of the biggest rush fan alive... <jsg140@email.psu.edu> His name is Jason Gianni, an INCREDIBLE drummer. I am sure you guys could carry on a pretty intense RUSH conversation.

Now that I think about it, it was <SL98MJ85@acs.wooster.edu> that asked. Anyway, you get the point.

    bye for now, thebigO

I believe it is you who is getting annoying! (All that math was unnecessary)

    >Seems more likely to me that the record company decided to sacrifice a >little tape integrity for some extra $$$, than that they are trying to rip >you off by not including a track on the CD.

Excuse me, but I consider not including a track on the cassette "for some extra $$$", to be identical to "ripping the consumer off." Your post was full of you contradicting yourself, and the moral to the story is, Scarred should be on the cassette. Even the members of DT are irate about it. They told me.

Now we may end this shit.

Someone on the list mentioned that Derrik must have hit a wrong key to trigger a sample at the wrong time. Actually, I asked him who triggers the samples on stage and he said it's John Myung, who uses the array of foot-pedals at his feet for the samples. I also asked him and Mike about touring in Florida and Georgia. THey said that they're not going there on this leg of the tour, but they will on the full tour starting in early '95. The sample "hear the drummer get wicked" is frmo the Public Enemy song "Bring the Noise" which they later remade with Anthrax. The same sample is used in each. If any of you sees the disc "Ominous Guitarists from the Unknown" buy it. It's got some great stuff from people you've never heard of. There's one track called "Overload" by a guitarist who was only 18 when the song was recorded. I think it's track 3, though his name escapes me at the moment. Someone else was talking about making a live CD version of WDADU. Well, a friend is about to invest in a CD press, so I could probably convince him to transfer a tape onto CD. How much interest would there be in something like that? Lastly, CD's use no compression. I think they can actually hold more data than the industry standard, but when they were being invented the head of the research group loved a certain concerto which is 76 mninutes long, so he decided that CDs would be 76 minutes. That's why there's wasted space. Then again, I'm not sure if that's true or just an urban ledgend. Take it as you will.

O.K. I have some pertinent info that I don't think any of us knew, (if you did, you were hiding it) about Light Fuse and Get Away. The fact is, this song was played with James on vocals at 2 shows in Europe (I don't know where). I met the guys this past Saturday, and James told me they had done it, but he didn't say where. He made it sound like they play it through all of Europe which I knew wasn't true, so I thought he was just mixing that up with another song. Then I talked to Mike. He specifically said that they played it twice w/ James in Europe, and "that it just wasn't happening, so we dropped it." He also made it sound like it was so UNhappening, that they weren't going to play it again, but that is my interpretation, he did not say that. He did not say anything definite about playing it later on the tour either. I asked him if he had that show on tape, and he said "I do!", with a grin that basically said that we didn't and wouldn't.

Wow! I don't know where to begin. This could turn out long, as my posts often do. It's Monday, and I saw DT on Saturday, but I haven't had the time to post. The show was awesome. When we got there, the line was already huge. During I Mother Earth, I was wondering around and found Jim Pitulski (DT's manager) and talked to him for a minute. I told him I had met him last year and knew he was from Pittsburgh, told him about being on this list, and asked him for a backstage pass. He said there's not much for a backstage (which is true) and that if I found him after the show, he'd take me back. I didn't find him, but I didn't need him. THE SHOW ITSELF: Bill got the basics down, the set was the same at Baltimore, but everyone keeps talking about Derek messing up Another Day. He's playing his own solo I think, because if he's pulling off Metropolis, I don't think he'd be butching Another in every city. They did look kind of tense on stage. Derek kept looking at Mike as if he was just waiting for the downbeat, because he wasn't sure where they were. They all looked like a band without much stage experience, IMO. Myung never came out of his litte cave between Derek and the drum riser, and that kind of sucked. Last time him and JP were always at center stage. JP hibernated (sp?) back in his corner a lot too - but that's because of his pedals. Pittsburgh had no moshing, much to my surprise, and that was fine with me. As Bill said, Petrucci's acoustic wasn't working for some reason, and the crew triggered "I know all about the honor of God, Mary Jane" while they were setting the Silent Man stuff up. I thought it was cool that Myung played the acoustic chords under the solo, although you could barely hear him. You couldn't really hear JP's vocals either. James got halfway through the second sentence when they put a halt to the song and JP grabbed his electic to play SM on. Overall, it didn't turn out too bad, but I'm dure they were pissed. I asked JP after the show why the samples keep getting triggered around Silent Man, and he said that Myung triggers the samples from a footswitch, and the crew keeps bumping it when setting up his guitar. I'm not sure that would explain every incident, I thought one happened in the middle of the song. It that correct?

I met them all. Derek first. He hung out with my group for about a half hour. He was very interested in how I knew everything. He also said he had not heard Scarred yet and when I told him it was 11 minutes long, he kind of looked stressed. He took my name and address and told me he'd hook me up when they came back through.

Myung raced past everyone again to the bus, like in every city and then I discovered that he was out next to the bus. He was so soft spoken that he itimidated me. I don't know why. I asked him how long he had been married and he replied almost so I couldn't hear him "I'm not married. I'm getting married next year." Then I asked him if Charlie sang at Mike's wedding and if they still get along with him. He said Charlie did sing at it and "not really, he was just there." to the second question. Then being afraid I was talking too loudly for him, I had hime sign all three CD covers, told him he was the greatest bassist on the planet, and went away. That was really wierd.

James was already out signing stuff when I came over. He was in the middle of taling about his vocal instructor, so I asked him if he and Geoff Tate had the same instructor. He said no. He was cooler than I expected to, since I was frightened of him and JP because of their dislike for bootlegs. He was real cool and signed I&W and Awake. He said Derek was working out real well too.

I had a field day with Mike. He came out and I stated bullshitting with him right off the bat, and we talked while he signed everyone else's stuff. We talked about bootlegs, LFAGA (see my other posting), his lyrical contributions, his vocal performance of Surrounded etc.. Here's the stuff I found out that I'm not sure we know. I asked if Bombay Vindaloo came from them sitting around getting trashed and having an experience with this Indian spice. He said that wasn's too far off, but they were eating at an Indian restaurant, and some spice in it just knocks you on your ass (as if you were drunk). I think the dish was called Bombay Vindaloo. Mike knows his theory too, cuz he said the song sounded Indian-ish with the harmonic minors and stuff in it. I asked him who "Eve" was or if that was a Kevin answer. He said it was and that he didn't even know. I brought up the OJ sample and he started explaining the significance of that, "Kev getting up the courage to leave" He said 6:00 was all about that, and that Innocence Faded was too, but from their perspective. Then I said, how are you dealing with that whole situation, I heard you were a little bitter. He instantaneously got pissy, and didn't answer it. He said we're all still good friends. Do not mention Kevin to him. He obviously isn't dealing with it too well. I moved on quickly. Mike was into us, but he said he thought that a lot of the info we post isn't correct. I told him we post everything but if we're not 100% we don't pretend we are. We try to find out for sure. He eventually came up with an example for me. The stuff about Neil Peart designing his drum kit from the Grace Under Pressure tour is completely false. I told I had heard something along those lines, but that I would set the record straight. I mentioned the DAT of Jens' audition, and he changed to subject to the vocalist audition tapes (as if I didn't know) as if to say, he doens't want that kind of stuff released to us. I told him we all have th VA tapes and he laughed. At one point someone asked a question, and Mike said "ask this guy, he knows more about us than I do." Then I said that they can't take a piss without us knowing about it. He laughed. He was so cool. I talked with him 20-30 min. while everyone else just listened. I congradulated him on his recent marriage and he left.

JP was last cuz he was on the phone (we think with Rena, since none of the wives were here with them). I was one of the first to get his auto graph and immediately started bullshitting with him too (being careful not to bring up bootleg material, but indirectly mentioning some cool stuff). I asked how some of their instrumentals got named like "Barfbag" and "Moon bubbles" and he said that they named them, but that he has no idea how we find out about them. I said neither do I. i told him I liked how they put March of the Tyrant on the end of Only a Matter of Time, and told him they should throw in more Majesty stuff. He responded - "Do you Play?" I said yes. "How long have you been playing? " I said since 8th grade, about 9 years. He said "Now would you want to play something that you wrote in 8th grade. I was like 17 when we wrote those songs." Then he told me he was just busting my balls and slapped me on the back. I said "then why March of the Tyrant", he said "cuz that was the only cool part" by this time I was laughing my ass off. I asked him about Eve too. He said it was a Kevin answer, but thought it was the Biblical Eve (I assume from Adam and Eve). He gave me a trivia question to see how much I really knew. He asked if I knew where the samples from Voices came from. I couldn't, so if anyone finds out and meets him, answer it and say that the guy from Pittsburgh told me to answer this. I told him we had identified most of the other samples, but most of them were Kev's and they didn't even know where they were from. Neither Mike nor JP knew the O.J. car chase was in SDV. John didn't seem bothered by talking about Kev. He was pretty impressed that I had Eve from Japan. Then we just kind of ran out of things to say, and again everyone else was just listening, so I said it was nice meeting him, and why don't you go get out of the cold. Then he left.

Then I got swamped with questions about this list, bootlegs, and everything else from other fans. I gave our address to about 4 other people, so we should have more subscribers.

Sorry this is so long, but I didn't want to skip anything. Also, I will follow up with anything I forgot.
