Yes yes yes... sorry, but Netcom is a bunch of fools... heheheh... and
thus, no true HTTP server yet... therefore... I say, be persistent and
keep trying when you attempt to access our web or ftp here... Since netcom
gets half the world on it's ftp server, it's hard to access the site...
hopefully we can move the site or something soon...

You know, the more I listen to this song, the more I like it. I'm starting to agree with Mike Portnoy that this could be the best song DT has ever written!

I can't wait to see these guys on November 29. By the way, I have arranged with EastWest for a photo pass at the show, so I will have images to present on the WWW after I get the pictures developed.

I'm just curious...has anyone else gotten dicked by the Dream Theater Fan Club? I paid 17 bucks around 10 months ago and have received a button. Granted, it's a nice button, but it ain't worth 17 bucks, to say the least.

    Hello YtseJammers,

I've been a lurker for far too long, so I finally decided to post. I originally subscribed to this list many months ago because my roommate was getting into DT and didn't have Internet access, so I decided to keep him up to date with all the DT chatter via this great medium. I must say that I have now, by far, surpassed him as the bigger DT fan of the two. I have yet to see them in concert, and am anxiously awaiting the days when they invade the 'ol Sun Belt state (Florida).

Now to the real reason I posted. I recently came across an article on Dream Theater in a magazine called Jam Entertainment News. This is one of those free publications that you pick up at record stores while you're in line. It's a pretty good article; it gives many kudos to DT as a band on the rise and "poised for stardom". It is also an interview with the great MP from his home in Jersey. Deducing from the dialogue and the content of the article, it was taken from around when Awake was released. The article also subtlely mentions us (not explicitly though).

I'm willing to transcribe this article for you all. I've got a little free time this weekend and I'm a pretty quick typist (thankfully!). However, I'm wondering, since it's from a free publication, has this article been seen in other free publications? It's entitled "DREAM THEATER - BUCKS THE TREND" by Peter Atkinson. I'd hate to type it all in and then find out you've all read it already :-)

On another note, I just saw the DOE boot in a store selling for $50. Is this a good price? I hear it's a real good recording. I promised myself I wouldn't buy any of these since they're so expensive but I think I'll splurge a little. One DT and one Rush boot and that's all! :-)~

    Take care...

I'm north of ya, Jason. I'm one of the biggest and baddest DT fans from Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. :) I play guitar, and if anyone begs me enough I could essentially transcribe the entire new album and tab it out.

So how many other guitarists are out there? How about guitarists from Wisconsin? :) What ever happened to the tab-trading thing?

    "(To Live) Forever" -intro

NOTES: John IS (as always) alternate picking...so note the strokes above the TAB...also...since this is from a song that's previously only done live...it will vary...this is the basis of it!

ALSO: I'm pretty sure you can figure out the rhythms on your own!!! I tried to line it up by measures...so if ya have any questions... go watch LiT!!!

    d u d u d u d u d u --------------------|-0------------------- --2-----------------|--------------------- ----4---------------|---4----------------- ------4-------------|-----4--------------- --------0---0-------|-------0------------- ----------0---------|---------------------

Well here's more...and I'm most likely never going to do this again... It's fun to share these things with everyone, but consumes too much time! The best tool for transcribing is your ear...so just listen, and use the old trial and error technique...and eventually you'll get it (or something darn close!!!). Later!

I think I know why Mike said that... you know that some DT songs like Metropolis are really progressive but not very accessable. I mean, no one buy a musician, or a musically tallented person, could in my opinion enjoy the instrumental. I was having a discussion about this with a guy on a.m.d-t... He said that songs like TTT and Met. were so un-cohearent it wasn't funny and therefore he didn't like IAW as much as Awake. I then responded that that was what made Met. one of our favs, because it was just so damn in your face progressive.

Well anyway, I think Voices is really progressive, however I think its very accessable. What I mean is that this song REALLY, REALLY grows on you. Its in your face progressive AND likeable by anyone.

ps. I'm not saying that there are some non musicians who don't enjoy Met. but I know from experience that people like my mom REALLY hate it. :)

I just subscribed to this list service and I LOVE IT!!!! I've been a Dream Theater fan since I heard the Images and Words album. The latest album is KILLER!!! Anyway, I have a small asortment of GIFS that you(plural) may be interested in... I picked them up from an ftp site : cs.uwp.edu It is a site that was accessable through GOPHER, until recently. You can do an FTP or NCFTP to this site and get GUITAR TAB, BASS TAB, GROUP GIFS, and GROUP LYRICS. The directory is buried in /pub. Access is restricted, but I can get in every once in a while. The gifs are in a music/pictures/d/dream_theater directory, I think. You might have to look around to find it, but I'm pretty sure. I just trited to login to make sure, but I was denied. :( Anyway, there is : The Images and Words Album Cover The Burning Heart The Mural Picture of the band A blown up picture of Moore & Myung A blown up picture of LaBrie Coming soon : A blown up picture of Portnoy & Petrucci

I hope you like it... --

Hello all. It's another strange posting from the UK, and it's completely DT unrelated (kinda)...

I *would* rate Saigon Kick as a progressive band, but only coz of the diverse range of musical styles they manage to put onto one album. Their greatest strength, IMHO, is in their ability to write very catchy riffs that the guitar and bass both play simultaneously. Then they put simple vocal harmonies over the top, and hey presto, they've managed to write a song you could happily bounce to for the rest of the month. Simple yet brilliant. I wouldn't say they sounded anything like DT though. Hard rock is a fair comment. They've all got very nice hair too, so they've gotta be good :)

    Byee,

    Matt.

Personally, I'm a big fan of Saigon Kick, but their first album (self-titled) was by far the best, and it kind of started to go downhill from there. Their second effort, The Lizard was a bit more commercial than the first, but good nonetheless. The third and latest album, Water, features a different singer and slightly different band lineup, and the music seems a little more laid back (progressive? Not sure... I only own the first two) Water's a good album, but I miss the old lineup. I saw them with Extreme at the Palace in New Haven (site of the AMAZING DT New Haven show) and they kicked ass. I have it on good faith from friends who saw them this past spring at Toad's Place in New Haven that the new lineup is just as amazing live, but I've yet to see them... If you buy any of their albums, the first is the one to get. I love the kazoos...

This is my attempt at Surrounded. I will say again that it is nothing like what I saw Petrucci play on LIT but it still sounds similar. I hope I can do this beautiful song some justice.

I will put the beginning keyboard part but I only know a little.

After seeing the DT/FW twice here in Texas (FW for the first time), I was blown away by Mark Zonder. The man is incredible! I realized that I enjoy his playing much more than Mike P's. Mike is definitely good and I'm not complaining, but his vocabulary is much more limited than Zonder's. When I watch Pornoy, I see somebody who is all ARMS. His fills are all "power" fills where he bashes everything as hard as he can-not too much finesse. Not that he doesn't do neat stuff, because he does, but it's a limitation I've noticed. Zonder, on the other hand, is all WRIST. He isn't as flashy and in your face like Portnoy, but his vocabulary is immense and he really uses his whole kit more effectively than Portnoy. And he is absolute master of the Hi-Hat (and his other cymbals, for that matter). Zonder's fills and rhythms are like what a Jazz drummer would do. Portnoy plays straight-ahead, in-your-face, flashy, and loud rock drumming.

Oh well-just some differences I've noticed. They are both excellent. ---------------- Wolfman

WD&DU is my favorite DT album! I've never heard CD live but his studio performance on WD&DU is excellent IMHO. Those other DT albums aren't too shaby either!! :) LATO, Jay Peele (INFERNO)

Inrepsonse to this about Saigon Kick... >>>" The lyrics could be considered as intelligent, but the music is basic, Plain (ASCII), hard rock."<<< I would hardly call them basic hard rock, though much ofheheir music is. I have all of their albums and it's neat to see how they've expanded their musical range. They play some gospel sounding stuff, some poppy ballads, and even a cover of the Bowie classic (Space Oddity). I wouoldn't neccesarily call them progressive, but they definately are exploratory. Well, first of all... it seems that everyone's required to comment on Awake, and I'm simply going to say that I love it. I think I got halfway through Caught In a Web and I was hooked... and it took a couple of weeks to get it out of my CD player. Like everyone else, I was saddened by Kevin's departure. However, if he thought it best that he left, then he was probably right. I'd much rather see (and hear, hopefully) him on his own than have him remain in the band, unhappy.

As for the LaBrie vs. Dominici thread, I think that Charlie might get slagged a lot more than he deserves. I remember getting WDADU about four months after having gotten I&W... on the way home, I yanked open the jewelbox and looked at the "liner-notes" (or whatever they're called in a CD). When I saw his picture the first thing I thought was "who is THIS dork?" (Kinda Beavis'n'Butthead-ish, no?) His picture really wasn't that flattering, and he was a pretty goofy looking guy to begin with. When I put the CD in and listened to it, though, I kinda liked his voice. The first time I heard it, it reminded me of someone else's voice... but I could never figure out who that someone else was. I'm not saying he's one of the greatest vocalists I've ever heard, but I don't think he's as bad as a lot of people say. However, I love Labrie's voice, too, and I don't think Charlie could sing some of the songs that James sings, and maybe vice versa. I DO think James is the better singer, but it's not as if Charlie is incompetent. I understand that Charlie had difficulty singing live, though, and that that was a reason for his release. Well, I don't particularly admire James's voice in the live recordings I've heard. (Admittedly, I've heard few... only LiT and LatM.) He doesn't quite have the precision and control onstage that he has in the studio. Sometimes I can't even understand what he's saying. (For example... I LOVE "To Live Forever" and I've only heard it on LiT... and I don't know half the lyrics. Anybody have them? I checked the drkhoe site on Netcom and couldn't find 'em.)

Anyway, I've drawn on enough. Take care!
