HMM...it sounds like a person flipping channels on a TV. Like the first
lady, you can't understand what she's saying (talk show or Soap Opera
probably.) :) Then it has the OJ guy, then the dry heat guys...

    > >In general I think this album has way too may samples...

Yeah! I think the samples add much more to the album...they make you
think even after you've heard all the lyrics to the songs. Just great.

I think its a concept album... Awake. I mean just think about how the
word awake applies to the songs! I think Innocence Faded (without looking
at the lyrics yet, just hearing the voice) is about the band waking up
and finding themselves famous and they're trying to deal with it. They're
trying not to be pulled under by all the bad things that goes along with
the music industry, much like Rush did back in the early 80s. So IF would
fit along with Awake... then lets see the Mirrir and Lie... well who ever
Mirror is about has awakened and see that he's hurt someone. In 6:00...
well some people wake up at 6:00... I don't know, I haven't read the
lyrics to this yet. Lifting Shadows off a Dream... well could be that
they have awaked Spirtitually or something... who knows? Scarred: maybe,
I haven't read any of the lyrics cept Space Dye Vest. And of course SDV,
well its about kev Awakening... he feels his heart pulling West. He has
seen his future as a stranger to himself and he doesn't want that kind of
life for himself. He's awakened and wants out. Well comments about any
other songs that I didn't touch?

Hi Guys. Some more stuff on Awake....

I guess I've listened to it about 5 times now and I still love every bit
of it. I just can't pick a favourite, but the keyboards on 6.00 are just
awesome. As for Caught in a Web and SDV appearing all over the place,
It's stunning how humans can write music this well. I've got to agree
with whoever it was that said the album has to be taken as a whole, it
all hangs together so well, all 75 minutes of it.

The more I listen to the album the more bitter I think it is both in
music and lyrics (or should that be images and words?) especially those
that Kevin had some part in writing. If ever there was and album for
ridding teenage angst, this is it. Sod Judas Priest, if you're going to
commit suicide listen to Space-dye Vest first:) (Sorry, that was getting
    a bit tasteless)

As for the cover art, yeah, very cool. I think the landscape that people
are refering to as waves are actually sand dunes or something. If you
look at the mirror, they're a sort of brown colour. On the other hand,
maybe it is meant to be waves and this is some sort of environmental
statement....? And has anyone actually said that the clock face is
actually part of a full moon? Or is this just the European edition?

What's this questionaire thing that people are talking about? I live in
England (United Kingdom) and all I got was the C.D., the box and the
sleeve. No questionaire. If someone could send me one, I'd be very
greatful. Mail me if you can help coz I don't particularly feel like
sending my address to hundreds of people.

And guys, you've got to keep all us Europeans up to date on tour dates
and apperances on this side of the world!!! I guess they think they'll be
free of all these nutters talking about IRC conferences by the time they
get here. Boy are they wrong....:)

    Later,

    Matt.

One thing I'm glad about this album.
It came out pretty much when it was said it would.

Well I don't wanna give my full review yet cause I've only heard
the album about 8-10 times. I would like to mention a few things
    though....

Did anyone else get a copy of the Mike Portnoy radio show were he played
a demo version of Caught in a Web? He get going on and saying about
how different this was from the real version and how it was the most
different sounding demo. It sounds almost 100% like the Awake version.
A few little changes here and there but thats it.

Now he is what I think about Puppies -> Mirror. When I 1st head
Puppies on the bootlegs as an into to Take the Time, I liked it.
To me, it seemed like it was kind of a "joke" thing, kinda "making fun"
of cheesy heavy metal stuff like Pantera or something. I thought that the
band also thought this because they gave it funny name like Puppies on
Acid. I really don't like that they have a whole song like that.
Now granted the song does have great parts, like where they play the SDV
melody in the fast part etc. But I really don't wanna hear those same
    guitar chords over and over.

In general, I don't like John P's new 7 string. It's just toooo low
and crunchy. I'm sure it has something to do with new effects but that
extra low string doesn't fit in.

I don't wanna trash the music yet. I really don't think that this
album can touch Images and Words. I let it sink in few a few more
weeks, maybe after seeing them in Baltimore on the 27th it will
help me decide. They may be better live. I think I'm just still depressed
that Kev is gone... The new guy better rock!

Also, I really don't understand how people can say "Oh yeah I put the
disc in and listened to it straight though and I knew that it was
100 times better than I&W's!!!" How in the hell can you people make
such decisions so fast ??!! You obviously don't listen to the music
with as much thought and depth as the rest of us REAL DT fans.

Am I the on person that was hoping for Images and Words Part II?

Kevin did write the song. It was totally written by him (or at least
that is what the album said.)

Ok, just listened to Awake all the way through, and just have a few
    comments to add:

The band seems to have matured on the album a great deal. Definitely no
sellout, and no overtly commercial tunes like Another Day. I think it's
a dark and moodier album overall the I&W. Portnoy's drumming has gotten
better, not so much of the busyness and double bass drum as before. I do
wish there was a few more fat synth solos, as someone else stated. But
    overall a great album.

I liked all the songs on first listen, esp. the trilogy. Great acoustic
ending, just like Marillion did with 'Made Again'. Hopefully the new
keyboard player can keep up. Kevin's lyrical and musical talents will be
missed. Oh well, off to some more listens.

Oh, I popped this CD in just after listening to some Ozric Tentacles.
Upon hearing 6:00, I thought musically there was some similarities. Any
    opinions on this?

I've always believed that is takes at least six months
to put a record in proper respective. While it's fine
to discuss "first impression" about Awake, I think it
is a tad premature to delare Awake DT's "Best" or "Worst."
Am I the only one how feels this way?
    Content-Length: 816

My FIRST IMPRESSIONS are that Awake is a more consistent
sound than I&W. A rocking, moving tempo throughout, as
apposed to the shifts in I&W (i.e Another Day to Take the
Time). I like Petrucci's "chunking" on the seventh string
on several track, but this may get tiresome after a few more
listens. I also wished that Moore had layed off the retro-70s
Yes-inspired keyboard tones. Nothing against a classic,
analog sound but I don't feel that this sound is appropriate
in progressive metal. As for my finale assessment of Awake,
I'll let you know in six months!

BtW, I don't know if his has been discussed (I just signed onto
the list a few days ago), but the Dixie Dreg's keyboardist
(I forget his name) is replacing Moore on the tour.

See you at Berklee on Oct 21! (Cool...I Mother Earth opens)

I've never heard the true Puppies on Acid but it's an intro/outro they
have used for a song on their tour.
The connection between Puppies on Acid and Awake is that it is used in
    parts of Mirror/Lie.
About Scarred, I guess you bought the tape of Awake, because Scarred is only on the

I agree. At about 3:32 you can hear what sounds like a bank of
capacitors charging, aka someone turning on a TV set. After reading your
idea above, it all seems to make sense. Good show!

I can't tell you how many times I thought someone was turning on a TV

Listen to the chord changes right before the solo -- simply masterful.
Unbelievably cool lyrics. Oh yeah -- to the guy that said Bozzio and
Stevens were just acting as "hired guns," check out their playing on this
song, especially Bozzio's drumming during the solo. I don't think anyone
can call that "holding back." As for the end of the song, that's more of
Vai being Vai. I think it's cool because it sounds so strange with only
the drums and vocal ad lib going after everything else drops out.

Listen to the song "Here & Now" off of VAI's "Sex and Religion". It might take
a few listens to really take it all in but try to focus on each of the parts.
I don't think Steve had either Terry Bozzio or TM Stevens hold back on the
album. "Here & Now" has some of the most amazing drumming I've ever heard and
the bass isn't too shabby either. I do agree that most guitar instrumental
albums focus on the guitarist and give less emphasis to the backup players - I
just don't think any song on "Sex and Religion" is an example of this. On the
side of the guitarists, if I was making a solo instrumental guitar album I
would probably hope to be the center of attention too! Listen to any of Stu
Hamm's albums - he's had the likes of Joe Satriani and Eric Johnson playing
with him but the bass is the focus. That's the idea of a solo album - to strut
    YOUR stuff.

Yes, I think this is a good idea, but I wouldn't be so nice about it. I mean
I'm so outraged about this (this is totally bullshit), that I'm going to call
East/West after hours so I get someone's voice mail (this way they have to
listen to it and can't hang up on me) and go fucking nuts. I don't know if
this is the right guy, but he definitely has something to do with it. I want
everyone to call and leave a nasty message, even if you've made the switch to
CD's. Tell them that we will not buy albums from Atlantic or subsidaries
anymore, instead we will tape our friend's CD, which sounds better anyway. (I
know its a crock, but it just might scare the shituout of them.) Here's who to
    call:

    Pete Rosenbloom
    212-275-2860

    Receptionist
    212-275-2500

I got a hold of him once and he was pretty much a cock, so I don't feel bad
about doing this. If you want to be nasty, call after hours and leave voice
mail. If you can be civil, try during business hours, but Pete is very hard to
    get a hold of.

Ah, you find it hard to believe that its possible to have a wider
musical interest than just Dream Theater? I like most music but
my favourites sure are Dream Theater, Depeche Mode and _early_ Genesis.
Have you heard old Genesis (early 70's)? This sure is progressive music
(or art, symphonic rock or whatever it should be called). Genesis then
went mainstream in the 80's and now they are quite uninteresting I think.
But their songs still are very professional and even if it's MTV-pop now
many songs are quite good, if you compare to other in that genre. I don't
hope that DT will also become an ordinary band.
I'm very positive that Genesis were a great influence for Dream Theater.
There also probably are many 70'Genesis fans here on the list.
Depeche Mode has not got so much to do with progressive rock music,
they were important for the synth music development. But I can in fact
spot some of DM's "musical language" in Awake.

    > i simply cannot say anything else but move to another list
    > or stop!!!!! writing such ignorant things.
    > an opinion is one thing but the things you wrote were just... :-&

Ignorant? What was ignorant? I expressed my opinions on the new album
and they are still the same. I have never thought that Awake was a bad
album, I listen to it often. It's good music but I think that the
previous ones have been better - more melodical, more symphonic rock
which is the way _I_ think it should be. Maybe Awake is a natural step
    after WDADU and I&W.
Move to another list? Why? I'm interested in DT and the list is full of
info and opinions on them. Or maybe you think that because it's a Dream
Theater list, no one should have negative opinions, that it only should
    be "Dream Theater is God"-text?

    > my god, think you're just not enough into the stuff to know
    > what you are hearing when listening to the new material.

I'm into it. I play (keyboards) in a progressive/symphonic rock band. About
half a year ago we were a Dream Theater cover band, playing most of their
songs. Now we only make own music. I know what I'm hearing and that it takes
much time to really understand such songs.

    > before i stop to calm down a little my first impressions:
    > I T I S R E A L L Y DT what else can be said?

Yes it is the new DT, I'm afraid.

And the .sig is still the same... :)

Give it a few more listens... now, especially with the CD, I am
starting to pick up ALOT more keys... ALOT of songs are just filled
with them... they are a little more subtle, but once you hear them,
you will wonder how you didn't hear them before...

Actually, I think that when I initially heard (about) SDV (a long time
ago) I was told that that is basically EXACTLY what SDV is about... I
don't think that he (Kevin) ever meets the girl.

(Just a side note, I am listening to Silent Man on my headphones, and
I am really hearing things that I have never heard on the tape before
(like the wind chime type thing... forget the name during one portion)

I think from my innitial discussion of SDV, I think that the girl in
the magazine was modeling some sort of clothing that was called a
Space Dye Vest... doens't really make it any clearer though...

I sorta noticed that... on the CD, especially before the last sample,
I heard some sort of static noise... That really is probably exactly
what it is supposed to be... Cool idea...

Anyway, that's about it for now...

Oh, also, for hte person who asked what Puppies on Acid was, it was
the intro (aka Pup) that they used on the 2nd portion of their tour as
the intro to Take The Time that is now used as the basic structure for
    The Mirror.

I personally think that the samples are very well-thought-out and fit perfectly into the songs, especially in 6:00 and SDV....it brings out an extra sense of feeling into the song that probably couldn't be expressed lyrically or musically....esp. SDV.....as long as the entire song isn't one big mosaic of samples set behind some kind of background music, I'm all for samples being put into the songs......

I was just wondering....I've seen a post about sending a "plug" or ad of sorts for this list along with the survey insert..... I have my little note written out already, but before I send it in, I just want to know how many others have or will be doing this as well. If we get a decent number of people to mention YTSEJAM, rather than just one or two, I really think that it would make the execs (or whatever the hell you want to call them) think about it. Once they do and DT actually catches wind of it (although I think Mike P. already knows about it) - then maybe we'll get some kind of appreciative feedback from them....

Who knows, but it sure as hell won't hurt to try, eh?

So please let me know if anyone else i going to do this...

Hell no. She can't even be in the same room with DT. I guess I kind of got annoying always playing air drums to I&W. I'm always doing that. I'll be walking down the street, nailing the intro to UaGM (obviously not the bass drums, or they'd take me away) and people are always looking at me funny. Well she just got sick of me practicing Metropolis using the keys in pocket as a hi-hat, my left leg as a snare, and the hollow part of the floor as my bass drums. Even my roommates got sick of it. OK I guess it is annoying, but the other day I played a friend's drum set for the first time in months, and I hit UaGM about right on the money (until the double bass kicks in). You just can't build the endurance for double bass playing air drums. Enough of this.

    KAI

ps. I'm really a guitarist, although I do own a piece of shit practice drum set that is currently in my dad's attic because I have no where to put it or play it. And I've never even tried figuring out Petrucci's parts.

Hi, I'm a big DT fan in Japan. I've been a lurker, but enjoying all of the articles here. AWAKE Japanese edition will be on sale on Oct.10th (maybe I can get it a few days earlier....), so I can't describe my impressions about AWAKE right now. Although I'm a little bit envious of you guys who's got AWAKE already, it' s still OK for me. Because I'll get the one with bonus CD single of Eve as Kaoru wrote.:-) Oh, please don't envy me. To tell the truth, I haven't heard any pieces of AWAKE. I carefully turn away from the radio airplays in order not to have prejudice. From what has been discussed here, I think AWAKE should be listened through a whole album, not just listening a certain song, right? Anyway, there is a limit of my patience, and I'm almost reaching there.

Well, I'll be back when I got mine. See you later, bye!

ps To all the Japanese fans (I don't think there are so many on this list), please drop me a line sometime.

Cassandra was a prophetess of Troy who predicted that Troy would be destroyed. She was given her prophetic ability by Apollo, who wanted to sleep with her. She turned him down so he changed her ability so that no one would believe her, even though all that she would prophesize would be true.

Because her predictions were negative, she was very unpopular with the people of Troy, so a modern-day Cassandra is someone who is unpopular for what they say.
