Dark and depressing seems to be "trendy" right now. Too bad.
I don't really need this much depressing stuff. Are these guys REALLY
that gloomy? This depressing stuff seems to fill the airwaves right
now what with this, QR, and all the grunge stuff like Nirvana, Alice In Chains,
Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam. I could name others, but I think we get
the point. Personally, I prefer the fantasy lyrics myself. I don't need
to get any more depressed :-)

Damn... I keep on picking up more and more listening to the CD, rather
than the tape... I am especially hearing some accoustic guitar
portions that I never heard on the tape in songs like LSoaD and IF...

The mix sounds great... Also really starting to discover some of the
awsome key portions of some songs like IF, etc...

That's about it for now.... Counting the days until Providence...
Also, sorry to post this here, but panther@mit.edu (I forget the rest
of the address) please email... I want to know if you guys need some
car space for Providence... I have lots of room in my car...

I'm the one who said Erotomania wandered... Which it does.

Sorry, it's no Ytse Jam, which is more what I expected, since Mike said, "It's like Ytse Jam." Uh, no, it's not... It's a long-ass intro.

However, I'll give it an 8, only because of the Vai-ish lick at the end..(which just happened to come on while I was typing this....)

My favorite songs are Scarred, & SDV. I like them all, but those two are my absolute favorites. They make me want to pick up my guitar and transcribe them... (I'm almost done with SDV... It'll sound weird all on guitar I guess...)

Well, I met the band last night at Tower Records in Paramus, NJ for the premiere of the album. Unfortunately they were only allowed to sign one thing each and I had three, so I got different members of the band to sign different things. Portnoy told me about the tour, starting here...Europe, Japan, etc. then probably back again. Spoke with James about the show on 10/28 in NYC. It was a brief, but pleasant, interlude. Well worth the wait (which was only about half an hour by the time I got there)....everyone who came got to meet them. Q104.3, an NYC rock station, was there as well.

I disagree... Scarred is the most natural follow-up, and would make an amazing video... Plus it's really heavy at parts (like the first half on the song...)...

That should be the next video...

Well, I got AWAKE yesterday as soon as Tower Opened up. I've been lkistening to it pretty constantly since then. (I'd say that qualifies as enough times to be allowed to send in a review ;-)

Favorites: 6:00, Caught in a Web, Voices, The Mirror, Lie, Space-Dye Vest. All of these have pretty much stuck already. It took me a while before I really started to enjoy the "softer" songs on IAW too, but I'm sure I'll come along.

Definitely heavier and less melodic than their previous work, but still very much Dream Theater. Whoever said the keyboards were subdued or less prevalent than before was wrong. They are definitely more subtle in a number of the songs, but they are all over the place, and you don't have to listen very hard for them.

James' voice is much more true to life on this one. Sounds like the producers decided not to engineer out a lot of the harshness and somewhat growly/gravelly sound his voice has. Big plus I think. James' voice isn't the same smooth-toned-at-every-octave like Geoff Tate's, and IAW made his voice sound like it is.

The cover's way cool. I hope they stick with this style for a while on album covers.

Well, not much more to say that hasn't been said already. The album rocks! I have my tickets to the release party and the Baltimore show on their way.

Mike, could you repost the script to the first sample - some may not have gotten it.

Someone also mentioned that the "this is going to be his biggest challenge, he's just going to have to face it" part could be during the O.J. Simpson car chase. From my dubbing, I couldn't really tell, but on the actual CD, you can hear what appears to me to be a helicopter. Also, from the CD, I swear the commentator does say "Simpson" near the beginning of the sample. I'm not sure what this has to do with the song, but I think we've hit a ringer with this one. What do you all think?

    >In general I think this album has way too may samples...

Not me: I like them, everywhere. They add mystery to the mystery. Does anyone else think that this could be a concept album. Especially Side 2 seems to segue with meaning. Just a thought.

I live in Beloit, Wisconsin, and I am boycotting Musicland because they charge $17.99 for a CD, $10.99 for a tape (the average rent around here for a 1-br apartment is $250/mo, to give you an indication of the cost of living). That leaves me Denzil's Music Eporium, which specializes in rap and alternative. I called them last week and they said, yeah, sure, we'll get Awake. I called them today and they said "uhh...nobody ordered it....we'll have it Friday at the latest..." I hate small towns. At least when I drover around the entire north shore looking for Inside Out (which was a disappointment, at least to me), there were lots of overpriced music stores to chose from.

I am a HUGE fan of Portnoy, mostly because of his awesome (on I&W, anyway) fills and his (IMHO) *PHENOMENAL* sense of meter (if you pay close attention to where he places his snare hits and cymbal accents, I think it will be pretty clear what I mean). When I bought Awake and listened to it, I was a little bit disappointed at the absence of crazy fills and the fact that he wasn't playing like he was on speed (which is the impression I got from I&W). But, and this is a big but, I think Portnoy has delivered in a big way in another area: he's worked out several patterns on this CD which were (for me, anyways) hard to grasp the first few times I heard this CD. He also is still busting out some weirdly-timed grooves (e.g. when he makes his entrance on "Mirror" his pattern seems totally at odds with the one that John P. is engaged in). I haven't even gotten around to listening how he uses the cymbals. I guess what I'm getting at is, this album is different. I'm going to withhold judgment on it at least for a couple more weeks. But the good news is, Portnoy is still a genius and, to me, the best metal drummer around. But, hey, it never hurts to post your first impressions anyway.

thats kinda it... someone posted the explantion a while back. bascially he hadn't been paying enough attention to his girl, and she left him and so he was trying to give his love to anyone, and he fell in love with a girl from a clothing magazine who was wearing a space dye vest.

I think thats the story... if I'm wrong just say so.

Two comments... bout the cover. You know, I don't see the heart at all! I don't think its anywhere to be found! Anyone know where it went or was that just a I&W thing?

Also, maybe the reason this album is so much heavier than IAW is the production... I mean on I&W the bass was WAY back in the mix, hard to hear even... in this one its right up in front and its startling to hear Myung for once. Its AWESOME... (I'm a tuba player) heh. Anyway that could be why every precieves everything to be heavier. I mean John's new guitar doesn't hurt it... also the drums don't sound synth, and they're more powerful in this album, plus the keys are back farther... Its amazing how much production can vary on their albums.

I think it fits in well as a intro/outro. If you listen closely (I couldn't hear this until I played the CD on my car system) you hear a lot of noise in the background. It's almost as if those parts were recorded analog first. Of course, when the main part starts in, it seems to go away. It fits in nicely with the mood of the song. And what a sad song! The break up (if I'm interpreting it correctly) of an intimate relationship is something almost all of us can relate to. > > Dave >

Ok... I have been trying to figure this out for a while, and really don';t have a clue... In Voices, there is a line:

Maybe I'm just Cassandra fleeting Twentieth Century Icon Bleeding

Anyone have a clue as to what this means? (religious? what)

    Hey there all,

I just got off the phone with Ticketmaster and got my tickets for DT at Memorial Hall in Kansas City.... $43 and some change for 2 tickets!!! General Admission no less. But hell, to see DT play live is worth 10 times that :-) What I want to try and do is get some interested people together and meet up before or after the show. I'm in Manhattan Kansas at Kansas State (Be sure to watch us kick some Jayhawk ass on ESPN Thursday night). Anybody else in the area wanting to meet up, lets get in touch. Drop me an E-mail and we'll get it all going. Talk to you soon....

Got the first copy of awake from BEST BUY, $12.77 well worth it. I've given it about 6 listens, and even though 10 listens are recommended before you post a review, or does that only pertain to bad reviews. Well this is a good review so screw that rule. Forget all those Lie complainers That combo of the Mirror and Lie kicks, like someone else said, they have to play those together at the concert. SDV is just a masterpiece, slow and mellow and all around cool. I like all of the songs except #6 The silent man I don't know, I just never have been one for ballads. I also keep skipping #10, but that's only to get to SDV so that's only a minor sin. Metropolis and PMU are still my favorite songs from DT, but I like alot more songs on this new album then on I&W so it balances out, and besides I don't think it's possible to make a better song than Metropolis.

Has the tour started yet? When it does could someone post the playlist?? I must hear YSTEJAM,PMU,Metropolis,Fortune in Lies, Mirror/Lie. Who knows maybe kevin will put in a guest appearence somewhere and SDV will be played!! I just got my tickets for the Nov 8th show in minneapolis at the mirage. I got the very first tickets, albeit that doesn't matter much since it's general admission, but when I walk in I will have ticket #1.

Minnesotan DT fans I'd cruise and get tickets, like i said they went on sale today(oct 5th), and the mirage only holds 1500 people. The tickets are a mere $10, there exists no better bargain. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- | Rob Schuldt schu0173@mermaid.micro.umn.edu | | University of Minnesota schu0173@gold.tc.umn.edu | | | | "Hope is the denial of reality" ... Weird indeed. Sounds pretty "corporate" if you ask me, but who knows. Probably a capable, reliable and sociable guy. At least they'll have ample time to rehearse for the tour now. :)

I'm sure almost everyone has heard SDV in MIRROR now...and CiaW in Eroto (along w/ 6:00, and silent Man)...but hows about the dude humming along to voices in the background...this one's hard to catch over the speakers... just another little cool thing I found.

Larry, I think you ought to re-read, and ponder...not trying to bash ya or anything, but what I got from the first part was an actual relationship that got burned hard...and then you've got it the rest of the way. Later!

    Greetings, one and all!!!

This is the first post-AWAKE post I've made :) Anyway, I do recall discussion a while back on Kevin Moore's departure from the band. I don't have any copies of the old lists, and haven't a clue as to when the discussions went on. For the sake of my brother, who has been a fan of Dream Theater since _When Dream And Day Unite_ came out (don't ask me how he came upon them, I don't know! :) ), AND who has no internet access whatsoever, could someone please give me, OR POST, the run-down of the story with Kevin Moore?

Thank you kindly!!! ********************************************************************** ** "Don't fall asleep when the darkness comes, ** ** Things aren't quite as they seem to be..." ** ** - Veni Domine, "Face Of The Prosecutor" ** **------------------------------------------------------------------** ** David A. Yeah, I got that too. Also, you can hear that high pitch whine that TV's make when you turn em on... (actually, I guess not everyone can hear that high, as both of my roomates gave me funny looks when I pointed it out). The first time I heard it, I was like 'what the hell, who turned on my TV'- left me confused for a second or two... very cool. Do I just have wierd hearing and can pick up this stuff, or has anyone else caught this?

That sounds about right- but I have no doubt that it wasn't Kevin just randomly flipping channels, he pro'lly picked the samples specifically... (duh, Jeff!) :)

I seem to remember someone mentioning it a while back, but I cant remember who did so sorry for not applying credit where credit is due, but, one of the samples (Im fairly certain- its sounds right) is of commentary from O.J.'s drive down the freeway... anyone else wanna jump in here, havent figured out any others... ~Jeff
