    Yup, the lines go:

            "Oh - that - this - too,
             Too - sol..id - flesh,
             Would - melt."

    It's a direct quote from Hamlet - I don't exactly know where.

I think John has had some contact with Vai. Vai invented the 7 string
guitar which John uses on Lie. I have the tab and it's for a 7 string.
I think most or all are played on a 7 string.

The beginning of The Mirror is on LIT video as the intro to TTT. I loved
the intro and I'm glad they expanded it into a song.

    My top four songs are:
    1) The Mirror
    2) Lie
    3) Lifting Shadows Off A Dream
    4) Caught In A Web

That sucks! Nope, I got mine today - actually I decided to buy
the tape AND the CD. I figured I'd just dub it to listen to in the car
on tape, but I'd rather have the actual album, plus it supports our guys!
:-) I love the design printed on the CD! It's awesome, and the cover and
jacket are very well done also. I'll give my own personal song-rundown
after I've had a few listens!

    I am Awakened

After last night's disappointment (goin to Tower at midnite to get it,
only to be shafted) I finally got the album at Wherehouse. (BTW, I am now
boycotting Tower cause of their lousy music ethic)

After listening to most of Awake twice (stupid CD player is really
    temperamental), I have a few comments/critiques/not-so-humble opinions.

First, it usually _does_ take two listens for an album to sink into my
brain; this was the case here. I do have to admit tho', that IaW did
not. It just kind of landed on me like a two thousand pound heavy ...
    object. anyway.

I don't know what I was expecting here, if anything at all. There have
been so many conflicting opinions on this board that I was really looking
forward to this album with dreadful anticipation. So far, my expections
have been fulfilled, and I consider this a disappointment. I wanted to
be blown away, as I was with IaW. Don't get me wrong -- I really like
this album, it's just that its not much more than it could be. Over the
top, in general, and by far superior to most of the garbage that is being
    released nowadays.

Like so many have noted, the dearth of keyboards is immediately
apparent. They are mostly noticeable in the background as a generic
'strings' sound :P. (Notable exception [of course] is SDV).
Even the strings, however, don't do much to dispel my impression that
this is a _very_ dark album. The most optimistic song to my mind is
Silent Man, which is still not very.

There were three points that really came out and stomped on me --
    1) In Erotomania, that _sweet_ guitar part at about 3:28. Gave me so
    many goose bumps.
    2) Silent Man. Maybe I'm just partial to acousticity(!) but this song
    really appeals to me.
    3) SDV...powerful. And to whomever it was that noted the gritty piano..I
think it fits in mightily with the somberness. And not enough. At the end
of the song, I was thinking, that was seven minutes?

Well, this is getting long, gonna go before y'all fall asleep.
Thanks for letting a long-time lurker spew his guts.

(ooo, new QR on radio. Interesting...Rather gloomy...do I sense a trend
    here? :) )

    _One_ more thing.
I really would like to respond to the survey card they put in the CD,
just to give them some feedback, but... that pic is just too cool
lookin (better than the one in the liner notes). I think I'm gonna keep it,
    maybe send in a photocopy.
    Somebody scan it!

Hmmm... well... after hearing all you people complain about the Awake
tape, how can you live with analog anyways?

It sounds so much sweeter in 16-bit... too bad it's not super-bitmapped
dithered 16-bit, after all, my CD player can do 20-bit resolution...

Excellent production and stereo imaging on the CD. The snare sounds a
    little wet, but it's cool.

How do you guys like that screaming Tri-Axis?? Sounds like angels
screaming... I love it... his guitar sound on this album is great.

I would like to know if anyone else has any thoughts on what SDV is about. To me, it seems like Kev (or whoever) was looking through a magazine and saw some girl wearing a Space-Dye Vest and he fell in love with her. Then it says he found a new girl and he might be about to make it with her if "she stays on the page", meaning this is another picture of a girl.

Does he ever actually meet these girls? It seems like he gets way over-emotion about them saying things like "I'll never be open again". I really don't think it could make someone that crazy just by seeing a picture of someone else.

I would appreciate any thoughts you folks may have.

    I just got any idea.

Take a look at the cover for Awake and Images and Words. It looks to me like the mirror on the front of Awake is the same thing that the little girl is holding in her hands on I&W's. Its not exact but it looks a hell of alot like it. I've never been able to figure out what she was holding but now I think I may have the answer.

    What do you think?

I was at the signing in Paramus, NJ at Tower Records as well, but got there kinda late. Anyway, I waited for a while outside (damn, its gettin' cold) and went in with 3 CDs and a shirt to sign. The manager looked at me and said "Which one you gettin signed?", which was understandable but pissed me off anyway. Well, anyway, Portnoy was first to sign and I mentioned the IRC thing to him and I gave him my shirt. The manager's face lit up when he heard me mention the IRC, and all of a sudden was like "OOOO, what'd you think of it, how was it, blah, blah, blah" and Mike was pretty impressed and said "Well, I think he deserves to get everything signed then" - a really kewl guy, that Mike Portnoy is...:) My friend behind me also had 2 things and asked him if he could sign the second - his reply - "I don't give a fuck - gimme as much as you want" - very cool.... Petrucci was pretty kewl too about everything, and for some reason Myung seemed to intimidate me - I don't know exactly why, but I think its because of the fact that he's the quiet one in the band.....oh well, he was good enough to sign my stuff..:) James LaBrie, I don't know what it is, but he doesn't seem like a real person - he's like the only person I know that looks exactly like he does in his photos.... just amazing (that's a compliment by the way, James, if you happen to be reading this). For some reason, he came across (from seeing him at shows and in the video) as almost self-centered, but I was definitely wrong. He was a pisser, jokin' around and stuff, and he made a point to shake everyone's hand that came up to him...... All in all, a very kewl group of guys........

(how ya like that? instead of an album review, ya get a personality review - damn, i should be a psych major or sumptin' :)

    Well, that's enough for now.....

I LOVE 6:00....since the first time I heard it, I really thought it was excellent - I personally like the sampling in it, and the way it grooves is very DT and upbeat - definitely one of my faves on the album....

P.S. - I think SDV is excellent as well - certainly not in the same vein as the others tracks, but it just has a certain feel to it that is very powerful. It almost seems to me like a farewell song that Kevin wrote to DT and the fans...that's what keeps popping into my head whenever I listen to it......

I just got my copy of Awake and needless-to-say it is great. My favorite song so far is Space Dye Vest. What a moving song! I also love Lie, Caught in a Web, Scarred, 6:00.

All the songs have that progressive touch and that DT essence. I also like that Mike P. was a little more creative in this cd than in I&W. I mean more creative in the fact that he has removed his patented tom tom roll. I liked that alot, but if he had done the same thing on Awake then it would get boring. John M. provided some great bass work. Awesome keys on SDV. James vocals were dynamic, hard, and interesting. John P. what can I say - jammin'.

    Overall, Awesome!!

With a new cd from Fates Warning and Dream Theater in the same year, it's like I've hit the jackpot!!

Does anyone know in which places Awake wasn't released on tuesday and why? Did anyone in Canada get one (I got screwed in Calgary, Alberta)? Please respond to this question!

Hey! Not to get down on you or anything, but I think it's a lot deeper than a magazine girl. It's pretty evident that whoever wrote it was hurt pretty bad (or was pretending to be). I think I remember reading on the IRC log that Mike remarked that it was about "a relationship that one of us had." Smart money says Kevin, but who knows?

My big question is: what the hell _is_ a 'space-dye vest'?

    Could someone tell me?

    Toodles!

Hi-ya, kids! I haven't posted in a while, 'cause I didn't have much new to offer. I just listened to all the lucky bastards that got Awake early argue back and forth about if the album lived up to IAW. In fact, I hadn't even heard LIE. But now _I_ have AWAKE, and now I'm armed with an opinion as well....

First, to whomever it applies, what the hell is wrong with LIE??????? Sure, it's a little different, but this is prog. rock, right? It's definitely DT. A grunge sellout my ass!

My first impression of the album was: Same band. Same kinda stuff. COOL!

I just love their sound; I don't care what they play.

More pet peeves.... SDV is a Silent Lucidity clone? Pshaw! What a powerful song! Extreme/Mr. Big clones? Ha!

You CANNOT chop this album up and label everything individually. It's sort of a compositional concept album that should be listened to all the way through (in fact I bought it at 10:00am and missed classes to listen to it. Silly me! And I actually planned to go to my 11:00...).

I also have a couple of questions for you YetseJammers. I've seen these words floating around: Puppies on Acid and Scarred. Could someone explain these to me? Thanks.

My next post should be nicer, but I had to get some of this stuff off my chest.

Thanks to all of you learned ones who share your info with the ignorant!

    Toodles! L. Glenn Waterfield

Well, I think I will follow the advice of Zack and wait about a week before I post a review of this new album. It usually takes me at least that long before I can get into normal music(of course, DT isn't NORMAL music). I think that it should be anyone's perogative to post an early review. After all, if you don't want to read it, that is what the discard function is for. About the cassette, this really pisses me off. I do prefer tapes to CDs, primarily for their cost. I was planning on getting the CD, but, for some stupid reason, I got the tape instead(Maybe because I'm saving for Queensryche). Anyway, I hate it when bands do this "this song only on CD" crap. I think Frank Zappa used to do it! Maybe we should put THAT on the survey. Where they have the songs listed on it, I think I will put "Where the hell is Scarred?" Well, anyway, I will be back in a week with a review of this album.

I agree! I've only listened to it twice and I love it already! G

Not as fast ^^^^^^^ Not to be picky, but there's a big distinction between time sigs and key sigs! I think what you meant here was the former. It's hard to have TONS of key sig changes without sounding like shit. Actually, DT could probably pull it off, but that's another story. :-)

While it is true that Terry Bozio and TM Stevens are amazing musicians who have seen and played more music than I can imagine, I think the point of the original poster (who wasn't me) is valid to some extent. Usually when guys like Vai and Satriani (especially Satriani) assemble bands for an album or touring purposes, they do get amazing talent, but it is VERY clear who is in control and who has been hired to be BACKUP. It is very guitar dominant and there usually isn't much improvisation from the hired guns. They are mostly there to lay down a groove and not to be to obtrusive so that Vai/Satriani/whoever can do their thing on top. It's only when you listen to guys like Bozzio doing solo projects or playing with a more team-oriented band that you really get to hear what they can do.

This is why I'd rather listen to DT, where all members contribute their chops and get a chance to be heard rather than it being a "Satriani-like" situation with the main man clearly in control of his hired guns who don't really get to show what they can do. -------- Wolfman

Well, I've been watching all of these other reviews so I figured it was time for my own. I've actually had a copy of Awake for over a week (If Dream Theater is God, then Brian Cox must be one of their prophets - Thanks Brian!!!) and I thought that the CD wouldn't be that much of a change, but it was. There are subtleties that don't come out unless you're listening to a CD, especially with good headphones. I also just want to say that I'm on business travel at the moment and I had to drive over 3 hours to get this CD Was it worth it? Hell yeah!!! I'm not going to do a song-by-song review, because I'm sure you all are sick of reading those, but I want to give some overall impressions. The more times you listen to this CD the more you'll hear Kev and the more you'll mourn his leaving DT, especially afterlistening to SDV a few dozen times. I just can't imagine the heartache he must have felt to write that. Anyway, I got my ticket for the show on Oct 27th and the morons at ticketbastard can't even spell 'Dream TheatER' right. At least I got my ticket, though, so I can't complain, even though it cost well over $20. Well, back to work for me. How many of you are going to the Baltimore show, btw?

    -Jason

PS: Brian, I've been listening to the tape constantly since I got it last week, much to the chagrin of my girlfriend who would rather be listening to something else during, uh, certain moments. *grin* She'll get over it. PPS: How many of you have made DT-fans out of your girlfriends/boyfriends?

I was listening to SDV and it seems to me that the samples are like someone changing channels on a TV. If you listen really carefully you can hear a little burst of static between them. I know that when I've just broken up with someone it seems that every TV station and every radio station is playing songs/shows just to get to me. I think this is what the subject of tthe song is feeling too, though in this case the samples really to apply. Just my $0.02. Anyone else want to add anything? I'd suggest that we discuss one song a t a time - otherwise it'll turn into a zoo.
