I'm sorry, but Terry Bozzio forgot more about playing drums than most
other drummers ever knew in the first place. TM Stevens is simply an
amazing bass player. Period. Who's the ignorant fool that wrote the
above message? Your hearing aid needs a new battery. "Still My Bleeding
Heart" off of the "Sex and Religion" album is one of the most
compositionally perfect pieces I've ever heard. People need to read over
their messages more carefully before they hit that good ole' SEND key.

Well i got Awake and I think it is totally awesome. I think it is in alot of
ways better than IaW. I can't pick out the bests songs because I think they
are all great. I thought it was cool that they played Puppies On Acid during
Lie as Petrucci soloed over it. I'm listening to it right now. But I do
think that Pupies on Acid is a good intro to Mirror. I also love Petrrcci's
solo on Erotomania. The one thing they didn't have much on that I wanted were
long instumental jams in the songs like on Metropolis and Take the Time but
other than that I think it is probably one of the best albums ever. (ballsy
    statement)
The reason why i am unloading all this bullshit to you guys is because
at my college nobody has ever heard of DT. I go to UNCC if anyone goes there
let me know and we can get together.

Hi all - just wondering what the latest news is on the new keyboard
player. Is Derek confirmed? If so, I'd be very interested in getting
in touch with anyone who might be able to deliver a message to the
band. A good friend of mine (not on the net) knows Derek, but hasn't
kept in touch with him in the last year or two, and we would greatly
appreciate it if someone could deliver a message to him for us or
otherwise let us know how we can get in touch.

In other news..."AWAKE" RULES! My favs are "Space Dye Vest", "The
Mirror", "Erotomania", and "Voices", I think. 16 days to the opening show!

    Later,

    Message-ID: <Pine.3.89.9410041629.A10904-0100000@bluejay.creighton.edu>

Well, here's my not necessarily wanted or unwanted opinion:

The 1st three songs on the album are what I'd call more "old school
traditional DT". And I hardly think Inoccence Faded is commercial. The
last 1:30 plus the synth interludes in the beginning part are hardly Top
40 crud. (and my favorites so far...)

There are an awful lot of sound samples--I think I like em for the most
part. Don't know if there are too many or not.., I think they fit great,
    though.

The sound quality is phenomenal. Even more crisp and clear than I and
    W.

Yes, indeed there are less fat synth sound solos--after the 1st 3 songs
    they practically disappear entirely.

James' voice is awesome. Incredibly smooth and powerful. God, I'm
afraid he's gonna hold an end of a phrase until next year at times.

Mike's not quite as "tentative" with the fills, which is good.

The "Johns" are needlessly to say great. Petrucci's voice is not too
    shabby either.

However, I am Kevin's biggest fan, and I am confused as how to review
SDV. First of all, what's the deal with the piano sounding like a wooden
shabby one sitting in the corner of the bar in a western movie with all
the cowboys laughing around and drinking?!!

So far after a day of listening, it is of course unbelievable. But I
wish for more synth pitch-bending solos, but alas you can't have it all.

One final comment--so many of the songs (Scarred, Voices, SDV) are , how
can I say this, almost so much of a build up and a production and a
spectacle that it's like there's almost too much going on if that's
humanly possible. But probably not, after more listens I'll totally be
    even more blown away.

P.S. Who says the ("Resistance, Hypocrite...) stuff and for the future,
let's start trying to place all of the samples! See ya all.

Did everyone else's CD of Awake have a survey inside?

It got me thinking of a neat idea. I don't have the time myself but if
someone does, the following idea would be insightful: Have everyone on the
list post their favorite 4 songs on Awake (in order of preference), and
then tally up the results. I'll post my four when i've listened to the CD
    about 5 more times. Anyway...
    Later,
Jay Peele (INFERNO) - we'll have a new 4-song demo out in November (the
music is more progressive with stronger vocal melodies... I'll post
    later... BYE!)

    Check this shit out,
I went to Sam Greedy this morning to pick up Awake on cassette since I
have the CD coming from Japan (thanks Karou). So I bought, and while I've been
trying to get listens in at work, I noticed that the orderr of the songs was
messed up. IF isn't on side one, its on side two after LSOAD. OK no big deal,
I can deal with that. Then, SCARRED IS MISSING ! I hit the fucking roof.
Shit like this really pisses me off. There are less time bounds on a cassette
than on a CD, and this is the first time I've ever seen a tape with less songs
on it than the CD. I never would have known except I've had a recording for
three weeks now (thanks Tim). So if anyone picks up the tape who doesn't
already know what's supposed to be on it, they get fucked. The record industry
    bites it.

    KAI

btw - I like the album better knowing its the real thing for some strange
    reason.

    1. Has John been taking lessons from Steve Vai. "6:00" sounds
alot like something by Steve Vai.

    2. Does anyone else notice the strong similarity of the beginning
of Caught In a Web to some Alice In Chains song(s)? This album
is definitely heavier than the previous two and it has a definite
similarity (other than the obvious superior musicianship of DT)

Furthermore, I just ordered my tickets for the Oct. 31 Columbus show. Hey, if
anyone reading this is from this area (Columbus, Dayton, Cinci.) and is going,
maybe we can all meet somewhere before or after the show. I have a feeling
since it is Halloween that maybe DT might shake up the place a little bit, so
it should be a blast. Just e-mail me a note, and maybe we can get a group

I just got back from Tower Records in Paramus where I got Awake and met the band. After waiting outside for about an hour, I got in and got to talk to everyone. I told Mike that I liked the IRC conference...cool he said. After he signed Awake, I shoved the first album in his face. "You can only have one thing signed" the manager told me, but Mike said "But it's the first album, I have to sign it." The manager then said that he should also sign bootlegs so they could confiscate them. "I don't collect bootlegs" I said. Petrucci replied "alright!" I told Petrucci I heard SDV was really good. He said that it was a really dark song. I moved on to Myung whom I mentioned the IRC conference to. I don't think he knew what I was talking about. "Oh yeah" he said. On to James. I asked him if he was going back to Kevin LaBrie. Nope. Then I asked him about the release party at the Roxy in Long Island. He said that it was just a rumor started by someone in the fan club. But they were probably going to do something...listen to the radio for an announcement.

Not a bad evening...I got Awake signed by all of them, and WDADU signed by Portnoy, Petrucci, and Myung (right on their picture).

Well, one thing that I think should be mentioned once again (I think it was Zack that already mentioned it) is to please hold off on posting a review until you have listened to Awake at least 5 times, maybe more. As you have seen from the various reviews already posted, people have posted stuff about how much they don't like Awake, only to post later on (mostly the same day) about how incredible it is after a few listens... That is one of the problems with prog metal... It takes a few listens to get some of the subtleties down... (I hated I&W and Inside Out the first time I listened to them... now, they my favorite CDs...) Just try to consider this b4 posting a bad review...

    It's Yesterday Once More

    Entertainment: Tribute records recycle classics

Tribute albums work fine when there's someone worth paying tribute to......Sting does Kurt Weill, Sonic Youth and Pixies do Neil Young........

The idea seems simple, but lately it's been spinning out of control. A bunch of contemporary country singers strutted their stuff on "the Songs of the Eagles" an album that has sold three million copies.

Others seem so strangely conceived that it's hard to believe they're hitting ANY fan base. Neil Peart, the oft-soloing drummer from the prog-rock trio Rush, is sure to offend zonked teenagers and jazz lovers alike on "Burning for Buddy", a triblute to Buddy Rich that sounds like a late-night talk-show band on too much Vivarin.\

Sometimes though the most bizarre juxtapositions work. (The article then touts Sonic Youth's rendition of "Superstar" and "Rainy days and Mondays" by the Carpenters. There is trully no accounting for taste.) As we all know, when musicians die and go to hell, they are forced to play backup for Karen Carpenter. Its rumoured that Sinnead O'Connor will take her place when appropriate.

That's almost the first thought that hit me when I heard CIaW. I totally agree - definite Alice in Chains feel. Very cool. :)

Wassup with this idea of Kev not qanting to be so obvious...and John and Mike saying they want to be louder...Trust me...the band has very little to say about that...it's called PRODUCERS!!! I'd say that Kev being too far back in the mix most likely has nothing to do with anyone else in the band wanting to be more obvious...if a producer is into the guitar sound...he's likely to make it stand out a little more...into vocals...same thing...it varies quite a bit, from producer to producer...an I guess that's a drawback, They wanted a better drum sound...and perhaps guitar...so they looked for someone who could do this...and perhaps the producer isn't used to working with bands where the keyboards are a dominant factor in the music. Later!

    EVERYONE LISTEN CAREFULLY!

You know what kind of GOOD THINGS can come our way if we all put on the survery that we got the info from Ytsejam, like DT because of Ytsejam, etc. They will finally notice... since we aren't mentioned int he album credits, I was kinda bummed! At least their management notices... :)

Sorry to quote the whole message to the list...but, the whole idea behind it (originally) was to post your exact first thoughts...and then we all could see how much we've changed...therefore bringing about discussion. As most of you know, I posted my exact first thoughts of AWAKE the very day I got it...and I can't tell you how much my opinion has changed since about a thousand listens...all the songs are very well done...just some more so than others...and if you don't like something...go ahead and post it...chances are you'll look back on this a couple days down the road and feel really stupid (like myself)...but it gives all of us a chance to learn about others, and their perceptions of the exact same album we heard. So please...KEEP IT COMING!!! And for Zack...let them share their opinions...and like I said...good things WILL come from this! Now for something new...I had this idea that perhaps the only thing that bugs me with this album is the song order...I seriously think that if it started with AMBI and then continued with 6:00, CiaW, IF, then to Mirror...etc. it would be really cool...and maybe even more of a conceptual type of album...Eroto is an excellent hint of everything else, and I thin kit would be kind of a cool foreshadow as to what's to come...instead of what's already happened (as it is in the current format). Give this one a try (it's not that hard to program a CD player), and send some feedback! Later guys and Gals!!!

Got a question...what exactly don't you people like about 6:00? I think it's just wacky...complex...and very DT...with a little jazziness...I totally like it! (and always have!)

About this whole thing of Scarred not being on the cassette...DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THE CASSETTE!!! Go out, buy a Cd player, and buy the CD...this IS one of the best songs on the album (I totally agree with The DOC about the jazzy part...it's WAY killer!!!). Later!

Well, I got AWAKEned right after midnight on Tuesday at Tower Records in Campbell, CA (Same place I got IO) I was going to post a large review, but it seems most of my opinions are shared by others in the list, so I'll just summarize.

My favorite songs: 6:00, SDV and Erotomania. Long live Kevin! sigh...

Yes, less "obvious" keys, and I am in agreement that I think this is Kevin's decision to make him more replaceable. I miss the keyboard solos as in I & W, but sonically Awake is incredible!

Have people noticed the Chorus from "Web" sneaking into "Erotomania" and the intrusion of "SDV" into "The Mirror" yet?

I don't see the album as being as "over the edge" progressive as I & W was, with such things as the solos from Metropolis and LtL, but, as said elsewhere, it is a more subtle progressivism, like Fates. It takes some getting used to, but in ways this will probably become my favorite DT album, though Metropolis may still be my favorite individual composition.

The somgs themselves do seem to be more of a Rock/Riff based compositional structure than their earlier more classical/melodic instrumental structutre. This is probably since they had a singer involved throughout the writing process they felt they could leave the melodic lines to him instead of inherent in the music. Not better or worse except as individual tastes go, but different.

    James looks like Fabio!

SDV is not your average Dream, THeater. It reminds me almost of some of the moody/alternative stuff (not Nirvana ALternative, the REAL alternative stuff, like what little I've heard of the Cure, etc.) I like it. If Kevin's own stuff is more like this, I'll be sure to wait in line to buy his stuff. :) Also, the first lyrics do read a bit funny on paper, but as they are sung, not a heavy emotional thing but more of the emotional void implied in the song, it works. THe long samples are cool. DOes anybody know where they are from?

My writing style sure is funky tonight, must be the power failures and Tsunami warnings out here. :P

    That's all for now,

    ~Chris

No, but that riff Kev plays at the beginning makes it sound like he has! :)

Also, on the subject of Vai... I didn't mean to slight the many great musicians who have worked with him... hell, I'm a Stu Hamm fanatic (as long as he doesn't sing! :) )... I simply meant that from a composition point of view, what you hear backing up Vai is inferior to DT. Nothing meant to insult all those great people who have worked with him...

Well, I got it. Awesome. Comments:

Could it be that all those samples are Kev's doing??? I mean, techno and industrial uses samples like that...?

The cover: cool. The inside stuff: cool. The CD picture: cool. The back: weird... cool. :)

    Songs:

Note: I was listening to the CD for the first time I wrote these comments.

6:00 -- cool drums at beginning... very nice production! I didn't know my stereo could sound this freakin good! James voice is weird. Great keys as always... Drums are cool too. And you can hear Myung. Cool. Cool guitar solo, rippin as always. Nice time/tempo change. Someone mentioned that this song has sort of the same feel as some songs from Awaken the Guiardian by Fates... it does!

Caught in a Web -- very nice technical key sig changes... james voice different than in 6. hmm... not much to say about this song right now. It'll take me a few more listens to enjoy it I think. The Caught in a web part is nice... NICE key sig chances! Very natural yet they're all over the place. This is a COOL song! heh...

IN - hmm... nice starting at least... lets see bout this chorus though. I think this could get in MTV... maybe. Isn't as progressive as others, still good though. well I haven't heard a chours yet I don't think... it could have been that Innocence faded part... dunno. yes... there it is again! not cheesy! heh. James gets really high on this one. He might have a hard time doing this one night after night.

Eroto -- damn! I love it already! very cool. Man, I gotta play this song for my band teacher... TONS of key sig changes! Cool keys! Not as fast as I thought it might be... still just as good.

Voices -- Nice sound effects... James is the best I've heard on this song. opps... he's getting high... he might have another hard time with this one. I'll have to listen with my headphones to hear those samples better... nice and mellow in some place... very nice. Woah John, lay off the wah peddle a little buddy... :) HMM... that guitar solo sounded kinda like Vindaloo.

Silent Man -- cool!! I like it! Nice transitions. James is great on this one!!! And is that John in the background? God I love this song!!! Wow... this is just great! Damn this is great!!! Heh... I keep hearing more and more of great stuff! Is this the same guitar they used in the Killing Hand? John's voice is great! Great backup vocals!

Mirror -- Woah... heavy! And who says there's no keys on these heavy songs! Just great... very dark evil chords! James sounds EVIL! Hehe.... Great song... GREAT KEYS! Damn, those keys are great! I can't wait to hear the transition into Lie... Those samples sound like the bad guy from Die Hard... deep British accent. James's voice is now normal again! Wow... great keys and Myung is really exposed on this part.

Lie -- ahh! and here is Lie. nice transition! Sounds even better than from my radio recording... nice song as always though... heavy, but still good. I really like Mike's drumming in this! Cool outro! This is cool!!! Peturcci doing what he does best!

LSoAD -- hmm.. nice keys. great tune so far. I can see this on MTV very easily! A lot like Surrounded... hey... I just thought of something. Could this be like a happy ending to Learning to Live...I mean Myung wrote both, and well, once he got done Learning to Live, his shadows were lifted and his life was normal once again. Just a thought.

Scarred -- Nice blusey start! I can already tell I'm gonna like this one. Yeah! THIS is DT!!! VERY NICE!!! JUST GREAT... I love the lyrics I can understand also! I'll have to go back through all these with the lyric sheet in hand to comment about the lyrics. Did James just say Learning to Live??? Hmm. I'll have to check on that. GREAT keyboard and guitar solo! Great instrumental all around. Epic, purely epic!

SDV -- been waiting all album for this... great piano!!! very sad... the piano has a nice color... I think there's a little reverb on it... man! this is so much better than the sample! this is very sad!! great, but sad..... truely great ending for the cd...

Well... now I'm looking forward to the tour!

    It'll kick!

Oh yeah... about the chorus to Innocence Faded. I don't think its commertial as every thinks! In fact, I think it is a translation of a Neil Peart quote! Yes, get onto http://www.cerf.net/rush and read the article from CREEM. In it Peart talkes about jaded cynical musicians who will do anything to improve their image and chart numbers. This song COULD be about it. I haven't looked at the lyrics, but I just remember from what I heard of the chorus it could be it. Who knows...

    One last comment:

IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE ALBUM YET, GET IT. And DON'T BUY THE TAPE! GET THE CD! The tape is missing songs... Yeah, it sucks. The production on this CD will make even a SONY sound good! :)
