Ok, ok, ok.... enough of all this confusion about the shirts!!! :D

    HERE IS WHAT I KNOW:

    1. I made the shirts. I've sent all but 2 out (there were 60 or so ordered).

    2. There are none left.

    3. DT was sent 5 shirts. I dont know if they have them yet.

    4. No one has ever confirmed that the shirts will serve as backstage
passes, so dont get your hopes up. Some people are making it sound
like a definite thing, it's NOT.

    5. Jason Giles, who makes the Marillion shirts for FREAKS, will be taking
re-orders sometime in the near future. Please watch for a post from him
       about shirt re-orders.

    6. There is no #6.

    7. James LaBrie and Jordan Rudess saw one of the shirts at the Dixie
Dregs show in toronto this week. James wanted to know where he could get
one. :) I guess that means they dont have them yet... you should see a
big post with that whole story very soon!

Thats about it for now! I'm sorry to those of you who joined after we
took orders for the shirts. Again, watch for Jason Giles re-order post!

dammit! hasn't anyone thought that maybe its KEVIN's fault that there
are less keys on the album?? i mean, if he's not interesteed in being
progressive anymore and he's leavving the band maybe he woulda thought
that he should make his keys less prominant so they can get alone
easier without him. i dont think that petrucci and portnoy told him to
shut up so they could be heavy, i think he decided it would be best

So I'm sure by now everyone has visited their local TM (here in Colorado)
to find that DT didn't go on sale today. I too was surprised. So here is
an apology (sort of) and the low down on the story.
First off, never fear, the concert is still currently scheduled for Nov.
22 at the Mammoth Events Center in Denver with I Mother Earth opening.
Tickets are still be sold through TM as a General Admission show
    sponsered/presented by KBPI, Denver. The
tickets were rumored (maybe even suppose to) go on sale today, Monday,
Oct. 3. If you don't believe me check the current Westword on page 102.
TicketMaster even has it set up in the computer, ready to go, but with a
message that says hold off on sales. I'm told that this probably due to
some financial discrepencies between the promoter and the band. So
tickets are not on sale yet but will go on sale (TBA). So I'm sorry to
Alan, Jim, Ken, and the Boulder following (Adam, Jeff, Colin) for being
wrong but I was just passing along info that I knew. So everyone pay
attention to KBPI to find out when tickets WILL go on sale. Also, I'm
still not sure if it's an all ages show but the last time they came
w/Galactic Cowboys they palyed at Mammoth and that was all ages. Don't be
fooled by these kids at Sound Warehouse/Blockbuster Music, TicketMaster
knows of the concert and DT will grace us with their presence:) --Dave

What do you mean? Rush does this shit all the time. Take Tears, Losing It,
or Kid Gloves just to name three. They'll play whatever the feel is
appropriate. Does not playing it live somehow diminish the quality of the
    song? Don't think so.

I, too, think they should keep from doing it. Don't worry - you'll still
have about two hours of other tunes to stimulate your saliva glands.

Ok, I'm a lurker who got an early copy of Awake, and I just like to say
people whining about Awake need to find a new list or get their head
examined :-) Its certainly my favorite DT album.

I'm one of those people who was worried when I heard "Lie", but after hearing
the whole album I must say I'm amazed. "Lie" is a perfect song to follow
"The Mirror". It works great together. I'm also not sure what all the fuss is
over SDV though. Its certainly not my favorite song on the album.

And whats the whining about "The Silent Man"? If you take the all three songs
of the trilogy together its brilliant.

And whats the whining about.... :-)

Come on now. I for one didn't want another WDADU or IAW, I wanted a new album
    with a new direction.

How can you listen to Erotomania and still say that with a straight face? This is no "ordinary metal". The composition is very well thought out.

    > Ok, I wouldn't say that the song Space Dye Vest is'nt exactly a ordinary metal > song,

    Neither ordinary, nor metal.

    >and Silent Man (yuck!) is only another acoustic ballade almost like > Extreme's or Mr Big's ballades.

    Perhaps...

    >And I guess Bon Jovi fans will love Innocence Faded or Lifting Shadows >Off a Dream...

What!? Admittedly, the chorus to IF isn't the best, but aside from that, the song is very DT. So is LSOAD. Are these the same BJ fans that liked Another Day and WFS?

    > The last two DT albums had interesting, composed melodies and the time > signature changes were there because the songs needed them. On this album, > it's more like "ok put a 9/8 here, that's cool".

The drumming on this album is far superior to the ones before it. And it's not just better production--- listen *closely*. Eroto... might just be up there with LVS in terms of composition and coherency. They went more "balls out" when it came to complexity on this whole album.

    >Just listen to Voices...

OK! > Then it's James' vocal style. Oh my god how boring. Screams and uninteresting > melodies.

    Now listen to LSOAD.

    > And where's the keys? Most songs would sound the same with the keyboard > channels muted.

Aye, I thought the same when I first listened to it. But after 10 listens or so... I was able to pick up a lot of keys where I thought there weren't any.

    >On Images&Words the keys built many harmonies in the songs.

True, but (preparing for lightning to strike) I think I like this one a fair amount better than IAW. It would be interesting for someone who was a fan from the beginning to recount their reaction to IAW over WDADU.

    > I can understand that Kevin left.

Then you understand that he wasn't interested in progressive rock/ metal anymore. > It seems like Dream Theater want to gain MTV airplay,

Why? You need *at least* a triple-digit IQ to really appreciate DT and M_V isn't a forum that supports this.

    >and I'm sure they will.

If they were after commercialism, they would be trying to get arena gigs with more popular bands, not headlining ~ small venues.

My friend (who lives in a small town) went to the local music shop (also *very* small) to special order Awake to make sure it would be in tomorrow. The owner (who's named Willie Nelson if you can believe that one) said that it was probably in the box of CDs he got in today. Sure enough, it was. When my buddy asked if he could have it then, Willie told him he couldn't do that. "What if I come back after you're closed?" "Come back after 6:00," Willie says. So he got it tonight.

Concerning the cover, my friend said he recognized the statue of something he saw in Europe (granted, he went when he was ~11 yrs. old) So he pulled out the albums and sure enough, he's 99.44% sure it's the same statue. He called up his grandmother to get the specifics...

It's Michealangelo's "Moses" in the "Piazza di San Pierto Invincoli" (Church of St. Peter in Chains) in Rome. (the church is between the train station and the Coliseum). It has all sorts relics (as these churches often do) like a piece of the last supper table and the chains in which St. Peter was bound. He said it his picture is from a different angle, but he's sure its the statue all the same.

I'm sure someone else will confirm this.

Thomas Jansson writes about Awake: <<<This is not the interesting, progressive music heard on the last albums, but a ordinary Headbangers-Ball-Metal record. It's professional, tight but it still is pure common metal.>>>

Boy, I really need to expand my horizons if Awake is "pure common metal." Sorry, but there isn't anything out there in the metal 'realm' that is even close to Awake. Some have been comparing Savatage's "Handful of Rain" and FW's "Inside Out" to this record (both are very good) but neither are even in the same league as Awake. These guys' chops' are incomparable to anyone in metal. The songs here are so much deeper, unique, and much more interesting than 'pure common metal.' I can understand if one doesn't care for the 'heavier' side of things but to lump this with the run-of-the-mill and (God forbid) Bon Jovi is WAY off base.

<<<I can understand that Kevin left. >>>

    Yeah! Those evil metal-heads!!!!

<<<It seems like Dream Theater want to gain MTV airplay,>>>

I would to if I was a recording act! I hope they do. They deserve it.

<<<I think it's too bad that DT are changing their style so much.>>>

'So much'? Did you listen to the whole record? There's plenty of prog on it along with the heavy stuff. You sight WDADU but that album had lots of metal on it. In fact, there's a part in "Scarred" that's practically 'lifted' off of it. Really, rather than immediately relagating Awake into some catagory I encourage you to give it a few more listens...

I can understand the Awake bashing going on... hey, I'll admit... I was one of them earlier! But I'm beginning to see the music for what it is... a true direction in progression...

It's the same thing that happens with Fates Warning... people bash them because they just don't hear what's really going on in the music, a sign that DT is reaching a point where composition is becoming subtley more complex...

The loss of Kevin Moore is a great loss though... I would compare it to FW loosing Jim Matheos... hopefully they will be able to continue with their musical progression with one of their greatest members gone. They were a team... and that team is now broken...

Now... some more thoughts about Awake:

It is sonically an INCREDIBLE album... musically unmatched. Compositionally challenged in the progressive metal realm only by the reigning greats in prog-metal IMO, Fates Warning...

Erotomania: the fusion of so many styles in one song is staggering...

Scarred: need more be said? Especially the little jazz fusion break in the middle... (how come I don't understand you... how come you don't understand me...) simply INCREDIBLE...

Space Dye Vest: this is EPIC... I still cannot accept the fact that they will not play it live... WHAT A TRAGIC THING!!!!

    Voices: pure dementia...

Silent Man: I'll admit... sounds like Silent Lucidity or something...

Lifting Shadows off a Dream: good song... Stryper chorus... heheheh

Innocence Faded: many of you may not I agree... but this song is classic DT... the chorus fits... no matter how cheesy you think it may be... I don't find it cheesy...

Caught in a Web: powerful.. a traditionally oriented chorus... innovative in a way...

6:00: hmmm... the jury's still out on this one...

The Mirror: balls and chunk and progressive metal!

    Lie: ah well...

A lot of diversity in this album... as a WHOLE piece... it is an assault on the auditory senses...

It definitely takes more than one listen to hear all the things happening on this album. I hear in Portnoy's playing more of his Peart influence than I did on I&W. More subtle things are happening on this album then on I&W, but at the same time more in your face stuff is happening too... Petrucci is showing his Vai influence a lot too... maybe a little Yngwie...

Well... nuff said!! Get the album... it's a classic to be... and if you haven't done it yet, get Inside Out (Fates Warning) and enjoy the two top of the heap progressive-metal stuff out to date...

We'll see when Queensryche rears it's progressive face... (hopefully it will be progressive)...

Well... I'm a prog nut... but you all already knew that...

OK. Time to add my own meager reviews to the frey. I've only heard Awake once so far, and even then it was in bits coz I was bezzing about doing other things, but I love it already. I finally see the good points of Lie and was totally blown away by the way Mirror leads straight into it. They've just gotta do these two together live. To split them up would be a major crime.

As I listened, I good hear bits that reminded me of other great bands. The trilogy's a killer, just like some of the classic Yes tracks. Every now and then I could hear riffs that could have come straight off a Kings X album. And is it just me or is John Petrucci sounding more and more like Steve Vai with every passing moment. Don't get me wrong, I think this is good. I think Steve's one of the greatest axemen about, and if John aspiring to his dizzy heights, it's gotta be good.

Oh bugger, gotta get to a lecture. I'll finish this later.

Well, I was at Tower at midnite to get Awake, and

    SURPRISE, SURPRISE

shipment got delayed and they didn't have it. I shoulda known better, I guess, than to get my hopes up.

just thought I'd share my frustration.

Well, just got back from Newbury Comic with my copy of Awake (as usual for Newbury, all new CDs are $10.88). First off, it sounds ALOT better than the tape that I distributed does... too much generation loss. There is alot more of the high end frequencies on the CD...

I went nice and early (its so nice to have a car, and not have classes on Tuesdays until 1:30 :). The first thing that I was sorta shocked at was how many copies of Awake they had sitting there. It was right in the front of the store with their other new releases, unlike what happened with Inside Out. They probably have about 30 copies sitting on the display, and probably even more elsewhere in the back.

The CD cover looks awsome... So far, from the cover (as others have pointed out), there is a clock reading 6:00, a mirror, a spider in a web. I am guessing, after sorta watching the Mac DT interactive thing that the man/statue is the character from A Mind Beside Itself (which is not mentioned anywhere on the outside cover). Other than that, there is the Majesty symbol, a planet in the backgroud (Jupiter?) a factorym alot of clouds (almost like the ones on I&W) and what I think is a body of water... Really AWSOME cover. Unfortunatly, Newbury didn't have any posters (yet, I hope).

Also, inside the jacket, there is a survey that they want you to send to their marketing dept... It almost seems that EastWest records is actually going to give DT some support for this CD... we can only hope...

Anyway, go out as soon as you can to get a copy... It is MUCH better than the tape!!!

Well, I just tried to scan the cover for Awake to put it to the FTP site... No luck... (I HATE MACS!!!!!!!!!!). Anyway, I looked at the lyrics, and first off, they do have the lyrics for SDV. It also does say A Mind Besides Itelf in the lyrics for the songs. Also, I like the little sticker that hey had on the CD (the little one as an ad for the CD). It reads:

The origional expanded consciousness version contains over 75 minutes of Dream Theater Music. The most music you'll ever get on one CD.

Featuring: LIE 6:00 Caught In A Web Scarred

I am assuming that these are the singes that they plan on releasing. Sounds like a good selection.

Anyway, have class in a little bit,so I gotta go...

I just called HMV and they said the AWAKE cd won't be arriving now until Oct. 11th. Has anyone in the States had this problem? I'm really disappointed.

Well, I just got back from Blockbusters(a new record store that bought out Turtles) and, surprise surprise, it wasn't ready to sale yet!!! However, she did say that it would be on sale for 11.99 later today. I am fixing to do some interview transcripts for my newspaper and I was so looking forward to listening to this new album while doing it----CURSE CURSE CURSE. Oh well, I will just appreciate it more when I do get it.

    Hey there,

Well, the day has come and now ALL of us have had the chance to hear the album which has been the subject of soo much debate. I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I bought the album today... I mean there have been differeing opinons on it from the get go. But after one listen soo far, I am IMPRESSED!! This is really a fantastic album. I'll grant that it's not the same as Images and Words, but it differs in a similar way that Images differed from When Dream and Day Unite. I love the diversity throughout and FIRMLY believe that Lie isn't properly heard without hearing The Mirror along with it. I especially like SDV.... Kevin's contribution will sorely be missed in concert but I agree with the decision. It's his song, it wouldn't be right to have it playing without him at the keys. And what can I say about A Mind Beside Itself except... WOW!!! This album isn't I&W 2, and I don't think I would want it to be. Well, I'm sure we'll have TONS of reviews in this issue of YTSEJAM so read on about what the others say. See you in KC if you're there for the concert :)

I jsut bought Awake this morning and I'm listening to it right now as I type. I'm not going to post how I like the album quite yet, but I would like to complain about something. I bought the tape, not the CD and nowhere is "SCARRED" listed. I'm really sick and tired of record companies screwing people who buy tapes!!!!! I'm fucking tired of it!!!!! When I went to buy Inside Out on tape the damn thing was screwed up and both sides were recorded on the same side of the tape. Side one played over side two going backwards!!! Luckily my roommate bought the CD so I'll be able to hear "Scarred" Just thought I'd bitch a little. I've put off buying CD's for as long as I can I guess the record companies have been reduced to new lows in trying to get people to make the switch and I'm just tired of it. Now I'm going to have to save up some dough for a CD player. Oh well. Scott
