sortof the same way Led Zeppelin broke up after the drummer died.
it just is not the same, and a number of people, even the band
included, just do not believe it is right to continue with something
that really doesn't fit. Somehow I don't believe there will be
any Wait For Sleep live anymore, either, unless Kevin returns.

Well, friom what I heard, both from c-man and on AOL is that it is
ratings week, so eMpTyV decided to screw HBB and show BnB for ratings
(that is sooooo sad that BnB can get better ratings than HBB, even
though HBB sucks w/ Rikki Rackman (sp?)). I believe that Lie will be
played next week, I also saw on AOL that the guys might _possibly_ be
on the show... The person's message was interpretable in different
ways...
Also, about rare live tapes, I still keep the discog up, but really
need to do a major update b4 new shows start appearing for Awake. As
far as getting them, there are many of us on Ytsejam who will trade
shows or for blank tapes if you don';t have anything to trade. Also,
for the person in England (I forget who it was), I can email you the
address of someone that I have traded with in England to make things
easier for you... (email me personally)

no, everyone got screwed... see, here's the deal. It seems MTV was really fishing for ratings so they prempted HHB and stuck B&B in there... it really sucks. however they'll show HHB on the 8th and we'll get to see it then. oh well, one more week! and by then we'll all have awake in our hot little hands and will be loving it.

Riki Rectum is a moron, and Headbangers Ball seemed to be turning into a "let's play all the rock related videos we usually play all the time" show, until last week when they played blocks of classic Van Halen and some Metallica as well. I too was disappointed to see that the West Coast was treated to hours of Beavis and Butthead instead of Lie. But if you all notice, on alt.music.dream-theater, C-Man warned us of this.

Hello, all the Ytsejammers.
Sorry for non-DT content here, I'm just wondering what's the short word 'AOL' is. I'm sure it's the short of something, e.g. DT for Dream- Theater. Anyone who gimme an answer to this stupid question? :)
Thanks in advance.

For anyone interested, I have one copy of Lords OF Sound, that I want to get rid of (and have for a while)...it's a good quality boot, and a really good show, but I bought it for someone (a while ago) and they copped out...once again, this IS used, so I'll sell it for $40 (instead of $50 which is what I paid!), plus shipping...which shouldn't be more than $5 (it was only 2 1/2 to send a CD to FInland, so who knows). Oh yeah...THIS IS A 2 CD BOOT!!!

I got my copy from a chap on the net who specializes in prog releases. Send email to ranjit@netcom.com and inquire about DoE or other DT boots. He's also had WDADU and LatM in stock at various times. He handles requests in his spare time, so give him some slack. Once he gets on the stick, you'll have your CDs in about a week.

As the new DT record was released earlier here in Sweden, I bought it last thursday. I was very hopeful that it was going to be a great album (I had not heard any samples of the songs before). But I most say that I'm NOT impressed. This is not the interesting, progressive music heard on the last albums, but a ordinary Headbangers-Ball-Metal record. It's professional, tight but it still is pure common metal. Tons of riffs and double bass drum. Ok, I wouldn't say that the song Space Dye Vest is'nt exactly a ordinary metal song, and Silent Man (yuck!) is only another acoustic ballade almost like Extreme's or Mr Big's ballades. And I guess Bon Jovi fans will love Innocence Faded or Lifting Shadows Off a Dream... The last two DT albums had interesting, composed melodies and the time signature changes were there because the songs needed them. On this album, it's more like "ok put a 9/8 here, that's cool". Just listen to Voices... Then it's James' vocal style. Oh my god how boring. Screams and uninteresting melodies. And where's the keys? Most songs would sound the same with the keyboard channels muted. On Images&Words the keys built many harmonies in the songs. I can understand that Kevin left. It seems like Dream Theater want to gain MTV airplay, and I'm sure they will. Headbangers Ball fans will love them I'm sure. But if I want to hear this kind of music I would listen to Vai or something else in that style. I think it's too bad that DT are changing their style so much. I must say that I agree with the Lie parody we all have seen here on Ytsejam.

I live in Calgary and saw in the paper that DT was slated to play Oct 25th at THE WAREHOUSE in Calgary with I Mother Earth. Could it be that someone confused the location and thought they were playing here? There is a bar called the warehouse here in calgary so the names are the same.

Well, just wanna drop a line to whoever posted about the DT giveaway concert thingy on Q104.3 in the NY area. Thanks to you (for reminding me about it) and thanks to my persistence, I was able to win 2 free tickets of the show, along with the copy of Awake (like I'm gonna wait 6 weeks before it comes in - I'm buying me a copy tomorrow!), plus that DT interactive thing on disk that they have (was mentioned here too, no?). Thank God that I won these tickets, because the price for the show is TWENTY-TWO DOLLARS A TICKET!!!! (not including the TM fee, I think) for cryin' out loud that's robbery..... It's a shame that it almost got to the point that I didn't go see the show because of stupid ticket prices...that's unbelievable..... I saw DT with Damn the Machine (anyone remember them?) at Manhattan Center last year and I know for a fact that it didn't cost anywhere near that much last time.....ridiculous! Oh well, so much for DT tryin' to keep ticket prices down to about $15 a pop........

Well, there are tons of riffs & double bass drums, but there's a lot of odd time sigs & synchopated (sp?) parts, probably at the same density as on I&W's... If it's not interesting to you, you probably haven't listened to it enough... either that, or I can't see how you would like songs like Pull Me Under, Under a Glass Moon, or Metropolis (all of which were also quite heavy)...
>Ok, I wouldn't say that the song Space Dye Vest is'nt exactly a ordinary metal >song, and Silent Man (yuck!) is only another acoustic ballade almost like >Extreme's or Mr Big's ballades. And I guess Bon Jovi fans will love >Innocence Faded or Lifting Shadows Off a Dream...
Space Dye Vest sure isn't standard metal... :)
The Silent Man is accoustic, and I guess you'd call it a ballad, but it's perfectly in context with the rest of the trilogy, and certainly isn't bad. Besides, if you don't like it, just skip it and go to The Mirror/Lie, which are much heavier.
Innocence Faded & LSOaD may sound at first glance like anti-DT music, but you'll notice quite a bit of musical progression if you see how they develope all the way through... certainly they are commercial sounding, but not in any other sense than Surrounded or Another Day
> The last two DT albums had interesting, composed melodies and the time >signature changes were there because the songs needed them. On this album, >it's more like "ok put a 9/8 here, that's cool". Just listen to Voices...
Or Caught In a Web, 6:00, or Scarred. Jeez, how many tempo and time changes do you need? Did ya even listen to Erotomania?
>Then it's James' vocal style. Oh my god how boring. Screams and uninteresting >melodies.
Oh my god how much more varied than the last album... He gives more of a raw sound on some places, but is silky smooth in others... personally, I think it's a big advancement over I&W, as he uses more than 3 different styles (loud, soft, and breathy)...
> And where's the keys? Most songs would sound the same with the keyboard >channels muted. On Images&Words the keys built many harmonies in the songs. >I can understand that Kevin left.
I thought there weren't much in key's on I&W when I first heard it, too... listen again to 6:00 and Scarred especially... Every song has keys, and they often are the driving sound of the song, but you just naturally hear guitar first in this type of music. Or at least I do. Hell, I though 6:00 was almost all guitar (w/ effects) on first listen.
As for Kev leaving... I think it's been established that he wasn't really bullied out by the rest of the band, but rather he wanted to do industrial music, something completely different. Maybe he didn't contribute the same to each song as on I&W, but don't take this childish "Well, the others wouldn't let him play so he left" attitude. I hardly think that's what happened.
> It seems like Dream Theater want to gain MTV airplay, and I'm sure they >will. Headbangers Ball fans will love them I'm sure.
I wish they would, but except for The Mirror/Lie, I really don't think too much else is MTV playable, at least as "metal"... maybe Caught In A Web (leaves like 55 minutes of album uncovered, btw)
> But if I want to hear >this kind of music I would listen to Vai or something else in that style.
Yeah, right... I wish Vai would be in a band like DT... it would be good, but you shouldn't really compare Portnoy, Myung, LaBrie, & esp Moore to a bunch of backup guys from Shrapnel records... !
>I think it's too bad that DT are changing their style so much. I must say >that I agree with the Lie parody we all have seen here on Ytsejam.
Yeah, DT really sold out with them 10 minute songs... and that instrumental? Pure radio fodder... :^)
> >/Thomas
I really think you should listen to the album a few more times before ripping it apart... DT cannot be taken all in with one or two listens...
