I know just what you mean - SDV makes me want to run to a piano

great songs, but I think that two of the most obvious "hit songs" are actually
Innocense Faded and Lifting Shadows Off A Dream, both with radio chorus :-)

Yeah, I noticed that too. Another reference between the two covers are all those
statues on the band picture on IAW and the statue on the front of Awake. Has anybody found other references?

Does anyone else hear the similarities between the opening 45 seconds of
Voices and Suite Sister Mary by Queensryche? It's not a ripoff (like
Rearview Mirror of New World Man), but it is kinda similar.
BTW, I have a request to make. After some of you see the show, don't
post what songs they do without having "Spoiler" in your subject. I
would like to go into the Manhattan Center and not know the order of
songs which they play.

Well, people. If you haven't looked at the CD lately, you guys/gals might
not realize that it is the MAJORITY of Awake (longest song) at a whopping
11:00. This could just be a rounded off time, but I am fairly sure that
it is really close to 11:00. These type of songs is what allow music to
have meaning! How can you call it music if there isn't a message or
feeling and purpose to create and compose songs as wonderful as this!? Is
it bad to have songs that express emotion in every word and also be longer
than the crap on the radio? This song is the essence of Dream Theater's
style and creativity. Enough said.

This would leave more room for improvising while they played live. Who
would want to go to a concert just to hear the album? The test of a good
musical team is how they play in concert and if they can play the things
they do live. Anyone can doctor up a study album. To prove their
musical ability they improvise. Just my opinion.

Well, my girlfriend hadn't heard anything but Pull Me Under when I asked her
out... the date was to see them play in Poughkippsee (sp?, hey I don't live
there)! I had been planning on going with a friend from high school, but he
cancelled at the last minute, leaving me with an extra ticket, so I thought I'd

Yes! After 2 days worth of listening to the new album, I can
convincingly state that it's simply sublime! If it were not for
musicians of their caliber, contemporary progressive metal would

octopus' intro defies even the furthest reaches of any
percussionist's wildest expectations. An absolutely mesmerizing
rhythmical effort not to be surpassed! A perfect 10 for 6!

Well... I couldn't with my head phone or my stereo, but in my car I could hear a high pitch only on the OJ simpson clip... not on any others. So it could be different stereos and such.

Kevin Moore has the meanest organ patch ever. It sounds so good as it leads the way into the beginning of 6:00! It sounds more close to that old Jon Lord Hammond sound than on anything I've heard. And on Lie, I love the organ patch with the pitch bends. It reminds me of the sounds Keith Emerson used to get with his little Hammond when he used to throw it around and stab it!

Well... its both... see Kev got burned by a girl really REALLY bad.. well he kinda burned her by not paying enough attention to her and she left him. Well, I finally got through to a voice at The Roxy, and it seems that the release party is off. If, as LaBrie said, it was a rumour-then it was a pretty nasty one. They had the ad in local papers for 3 weeks plus it was on their telephone hotline.
Damn- and the Roxy's right in my backyard. If anyone hears of any Long Island pre-tour gigs, let me know, so me and my tape deck can make plans for the night.

I recall a while back people mentioning how many different songs were in Erotomania. I think I found one off of I&W. Correct me if I'm wrong but at 2:50 doesn't this sound ALOT like the melody from Another Day???
I can't identify it but: the sample in SDV of a father (seems like) telling a child (seems like) that : "if you're not in this door by 12:00(??) your can find another to walk through" Or something to that effect... This is pretty cool, reminds me a lot of those High school years!!

Well, I think that Kai/Eric is abouyt right... I do sorta hear a helicopter in the background of the sample about "he's gonna have to face it..." I don't hear the part mentioning Simpson (I hear he's)...

Also, about the mirror on the cover... After comparing it to the object being help by the girl on I&W (on my I&W poster, where the object on there is about the same size as the one on the CD cover) and I really don't think that it is the same... The shape around the corners doens't match... The Awake one has more distinct corners, while the I&W one is very round, at least from the back... Anyone with an I&W poster want to check to confirm... I could be seeing things...
Oh, also, about the line in Voices "Maybe I'm just Cassandra fleeting" is it me or is James saying "Maybe I just can't stand her reading"? I have been wondering ever since I got Awake... any ideas?

Okay, I may be way off on this first one, but it sounds to me like the first solo on 6:00 (right before the "The pain inside coming outside" part is keyboards. It is a bit "grittier" than kev's normal solos, but something about it keeps me thinking keyboards... Any other opinions?
Second, as to the sound of the piano on SDV: Notice the real piano in the studio shot? I bet that it's an actual analog recording of that piano. Plus, if you listen to SDV through headphones, you can hear the sound of the felt dampers coming off the strings when Kev hits the sustain pedal.
Last, to the sample "6:00 on christmas morning" there's a weird chop in the middle of the word "on" could this be 2 samples stuck together?

That's Julian Sands (a guy, not a lady like someone suggested) playing George Emerson in "A Room With a View". That's the scene that he has with Helena Bonham Carter (I watched that scene in the movie to verify--I also can show how close it is to the original text of the book if anyone's interested).
The "he" that is refered to is the character played by Daniel Day-Lewis.

Guys, I screwed up bad! I read someone complaining about not having 'Scarred' on their tape version and I thought "Gee, I don't remember seeing that on my CD version either!" Like a dumbass, I hit the send button just before I picked up my CD (yes, CD) and looked on the back. Doe! Too late! DT usually doesn't have refrains with the names of their songs in them, and it takes a couple of days to learn them. Hell, I can still only name about ten Led Zep songs by just listening! They're the same way. Oh well, enough excuses. Thanks a lot for the Puppies info though. I haven't had the chance to see DT live yet; the closest they come to me is Chicago. Why don't they play in Peoria? It's good enough for Maiden and Van Halen. Oh well.
For those of you who DO have the tape, I'm afraid you _are_ missing a great song. Awake is getting better by the second!

I would like to second this support of early Genesis. Peter Gabriel was the vocalist; Steve Hackett, guitarist; Tony Banks, keyboardist; Mike Rutherford, bassist; Phil Collins a really good drummer (yes, he can really do a good job when he wants).
If you're not familiar with this music and like Peter Gabriel, I'd recommend starting with "Selling England by the Pound" (which has just had a re-mixed version released). The sound isn't progressive metal, so if you only like metal you might not like it. But if you give it a chance and pay attention to the musicianship, it's *excellent*.
Other, heavier progressive bands that might be of interest are Anglagard, Anekdoten, and Threshold. The first one should appeal if you like Dream Theater and King Crimson. The other two are heavier (Threshold reminds me of the excellent Demon once in a while).
