Heh its funny, but on some parts of A Mind Beside Itself I can hear Jon
Anderson come in on Heart of the Sunrise... weird huh? It just has that
feel to it I guess.

No he's not... :) that's old news. :)
its someone named Derek Sherian or something, ex-Kiss and Alice in Chains
keyboardist, who's known not to like progressive music. Weird eh?

WOW!
I must say that when the first reviews of Awake started to hit the 'net I was
pretty concerned that it would suck. I can now quite happily say that after
listening to Awake but one time it is without a doubt one of the most fucking
awesome works I've ever heard. I can't imagibe how it could've been done any
better. I'm glad the naysayers were wrong. My only regret (sadly) is that
we'll never get to see Kevin play any of it.
Later,

My musical interest isn't that narrow, but i'm not going to type in all
my favourite bands. I think the major problem here is, that we have a totally
different musical background. I was always interested in real heavy stuff.
So i went with that heavy music from Jimi H., Who, Led Zep., Cream (which
is IMO the beginning of heavy metal) over to Deep P., RUSH!!!, YES, ...
over to Jud.Pr., Black Sabb., ... over to Metallica, Met. Ch., Anthrax,
Testament, ... up to our generation right now with DT, QR, Psych. Waltz,
Ministry, FW!!!!, ...
Sorry for my too hard flaming, but it was early in the morning and it was
right after a night listening to the new one.
I've always been and up until now I AM a metalhead and i think even
scientists should be allowed to be!!!
WHAT i actually wanted to say is that i can't follow your thoughts because
i think we live in other musical universes (maybe parallel ones).
Sorry !

Time to see just how badly I can be wrong, eh?
-6:00
After a few listens, I began to see this one as
Kevin's way of explaining why he left the band,
and why he stayed with it for as long as he did,
feeling it was something he owed them
("got promises to keep and wood to chop (i.e. a
job to do) before he sleeps"). Other lines seem
to support this ("turns the music down but just can't
seem to shake that sound" couldn't get his own music
out of his head, "answer the call while you
still hear at all because nobody will if you won't"
his eventual decision to leave).
CiaW and IF I haven't listened to or studied the lyrics enough
-A Mind Beside Itself
I figure there must be some reason why they chose
Erotomania as a title for a song, since this is
one band that doesn't dwell on sex as a topic for songs,
unlike most others... "Voices" seems to be about
someone that could have been in "The Wall"...
I'm not sure how "The Silent Man" fits in at all...
And there's the bell. will return later

Hey gang! I haven't posted but a couple of times since I
subscribed, but I will now. I tried to post on Tues. but
the server was acting up and wouldn't send it. Anyhow, I
felt it necessary to skip my History of Rock Music class
on Tuesday to go and get my copy of AWAKE. Just a couple
of comments:
- 6:00 - Cool drum/guitar intro. I was immediately struck
by how much heavier their sound was. I knew from all the
posts going on by those people who had advance copies of
the album that it was heavier, but I didn't expect this!
Anyway, 6:00 is a great song.
- Caught In A Web - This song is good, but to me it's kind
of passe. To me, this song is a 'typical' rock song to me
if Dream Theater can write a 'typical' song. For me, this
song is AWAKE's version of "Wait for Sleep', good but not
exceptional.
- Innocence Faded - I like this song better than Caught in
a Web, but it too is a little common sounding. Cool keys
though.
- Erotomania - I think this is one of the best rock instrumentals
that I have heard in I don't know when! No flames please,
but IMHO it is better than Ytsejam. I do agree though with
others who have posted that it does wander in spots.
- Voices - Love the intro. Very dramatic. I do think though
that this song also drags a bit. I do like it though.
- The Silent Man - Sorry if others don't, but I love songs
like this, with only a few instruments and a good rock ballad.
This song adds a nice contrast to the heavy stuff. At least
this osng can stand on it's own, I don't think I can listen
to 'Wait for Sleep' w/o listening to LtL.
- The Mirror- Another really heavy track. It totally ROCKS!
Who says keyboards don't belong in heavy metal? Don't start
a flame war, I know Dream Theater is in the "category" of
progressive metal. This is so far one of my favorites on
this disc.
- Lie - I don't see what all the flames were about relating
to this song. Of course I still haven't heard the radio version
because it seems the DJ's in Charlotte don't take requests of this
nature too often. I really think Lie is one of the stronger songs
on this disc. It seems to stick in my head whenever I listen
to it. The lead-in from the Mirror is sudden but cool. The outro
is really good. (was this the part left out of the single?)
- Lifting Shadows off a Dream - I like the song but I think
this is probably the weakest song on the disc at this point
of my listening experience with this disc. It never really
grabs at me and demands my attention.
- Scarred - Great song. Great music. Nuff said.
- Space-Dye Vest - I am even more impressed with Kev than I was
before. The man can write some really great songs musically
and lyrically. I can't say enough about his talent. His leaving
is a greater blow to Dream Theater than most people think. I do
respect his decision to leave, but I don't have to like it.
Other misc. comments:
I have been listening to this disc nonstop since Tues. (today
being Friday), so I think I have definitely given this disc
a fair listening to. (probaby heard it all the way through
about 12 times, scattered songs more). These comments of
course are just one man's opinion, and are not being forced
on anybody. Any comments, questions, discussions welcome.
If you have read this review with an open mind, I thank
you very much.

My boyfriend is a huge Pixies fan, which is the total opposite of DT, so
there's no hope. He looked at the I&W cover, called it pretentious, and
then looked at the Awake cover, called it somewhat leass than pretentious,
then listened to Awake (which I broke down and went to musicland and got --
turned out to be $13 on sale...) and didn't care for it. He did like the
first few minutes of Caught in a Web, though (thought it sounded strangely
like Faith No More)...

When I first heard that sample, I immediatly thought it was from Boxing
Helena; I saw the film a month ago, and if that section is not from the
film, then it is VERY close to it.

Jason H. states:
"Also, I really don't understand how people can say "Oh yeah I put the
disc in and listened to it straight though and I knew that it was
100 times better than I&W's!!!" How in the hell can you people make
such decisions so fast ??!! You obviously don't listen to the music
with as much thought and depth as the rest of us REAL DT fans.
Am I the on person that was hoping for Images and Words Part II?"
Not to flame, but I think (IMO anyway) it just lept out and "spoke" to me
immediately. In general a lot of prog gets slagged for having too much
musical and not enough emotional content. I think the emotional content and
feel (relative to both lyric and music) is just far too overwhelming from
minute one to not be bedazzled. The hook in CiaW and all of SDV, as well as
James' guttaral growling in Lie...that shit just "says" something to me.
They SOUND like they MEAN it, which I think was (in spots) lacking on IaW.
"Not a real DT fan?!?!?!?!" Excuse me, myself and a loy of my friends
reading this w/me take high offense to that comment. Did we miss the
Official DT fan test or something? I fully consider myself a REAL DT fan; I
have tons of boots and such and stay well on top of everything they do. I DO
listen to the music, BTW. Again, not to slag, but REAL DT fans should
welcome this new album and its new direction (which really isn't all that
different.) After all, it is PROGRESSIVE rock; shouldn't it actually
progress.

towards the end of his songs.
Still My Bleeding Heart is probably my favorite but I never listen to the
last two minutes of it because it really gets boring.

For those 'ryche fans that are wondering, the Queensryche album
The Promised Land should be released October 18, with the first single
I am I already released to radio. A few questions about this: Does anybody
know anything about this album, like how long it is and if The Real World
is on it? Also, has anyone seen a video for I am I yet?

Everyone is really trying to compare all the DT songs to other bands songs.
I think every song on this album sounds like Dream Theater. Every guitar
part sounds like something that John Petrucci would do. Every bass part
sounds like something that John Myung would do. Every keyboard part sounds
like something that Kevin Moore would do. Every vocal line sounds like
something James Labrie would do. And every drum part, ironically enough,
sounds like something that Mike Portnoy would do.
Did anyone else notice how in GFTPM how they said that the song writing in
SDV was just silly? That really pissed me off. Cracking on Kev like that.
As we all know he is great. Did this make anyone else mad?

Okay, William. The name of the CD is The Promised Land. The first single
is called "I am I" and this is all _supposed_ to be coming out exactly TWO
weeks from the release of _AWAKE_, OCT. 18. The first single is really
rhythmic and progressive sounding. I wonder whether it will all be this
progressive sounding. (ytsejammers) Are any of you guys going to get the
copy earlier than this proposed release date? This isn't really as big to
me as DT, but it really would be neat to listen before any one else does.
There you are,

In that order,
1) _The Promised Land_
2) "I am I"
