    First, it will be quite a shame to lose Kevin. I hope they can replace
    him with an equally talented rock or even jazz keyboardist (Chick Corea
    would be quite a unique dream come true).

    But I look forward to Kevin's new band. To me, he has some very good
    tastes. I see inspiration of the Cure in two keyboard parts in the
    album--the keyboard at the beginning of Lifting Shadows Off a Dream is
    very much like something from Disintegration, and Space Dye Vest
    has very much a Cure sound, mixed with Nine Inch Nails (somewhat like
    Something I Can Never Have).

    If Kevin creates a progressive alternative/industrial band, it could
    be fantastic. I've been looking for a progressive industrial band for
    so long, and wondered if I was going to have to be the one to create
    it.

    <<Am I the on person that was hoping for Images and Words Part II?">>

    Not at all, Jason. To me, Images And Words signified where progressive rock should be in the 90's. Being a prog head all my life, there hasn't really been anything new in the prog world for 10 years or so. Images And Words blended Heavy Metal with Prog-Rock 100 times better than any metal band ever has.

    Some people say progressive music should progress. Kinda true, but change in itself does not mean progress. It all depends on if the change is something new. AWAKE is damn good progressive metal but it is not a major departure from other albums in that category. It's just that DT are better players than the other bands.

    It's really annoying to have to strain my ears to hear Kevin's playing on AWAKE. There's parts of Voices where I just know the keyboards are supposed to carry the melody, and the backing guitar stuff is louder in the mix. There's lots of keys on the album but whoever mixed it seems to think that keys are ALWAYS for the background. What a shame.

    Damn- now I can't even get to see Kev play these songs live where the soundman might boost the keys a little bit.

    BTW- what part of voices is the humming heard??? I didn't catch it at all last night with the headphones on.

    I just thought that I would mention that I just got done watching the video for Lie (twice) on MTV's Headbangers Ball. The boys are actually supposed to be on the show next week!!!!

    The 1st thing I noticed about the video is that there was no Kev in it...:( I thought that he might have stuck around long enough to shoot the video...

    The video is nothing outstanding. It's just the 4 of them standing around in what looks like New York City. The are standing under bridges and in the subway and stuff.

    John P. has the new 7-string but it didn' have my favorite "face" graphics on it, it was just black with green knobs and pickups (yuck!).

    Mike had his new Mapex kit. It was huge! He had lots of little extras too.

    BTW - anyone have any idea what Scarred is about?

    I went to a Blockbuster Music store where they have a big listening area where one can listen to any CD in the store. So anyway, I'm there listening to some old Dregs stuff and Fates Warning when a guy sits down next to me and wants to listen to...Awake! OK, cool I thought (BTW, he decides to get it.) Then another older guy two seats away tells the clerk, "OK, I'll get it." And out he pulls the Awake jewel box! Wow, two DT sales in ten seconds, Great! Then, and I am not making this up, a thirty year old or so lady walks up, and gives the clerk some rap album to listen to, and also...you'll never guess...Awake! She decides to get it too... I wondered if I was dreaming or what... Then, as I was walking out stunned with excitement over DT sales, I notice two teenage guys sitting at a listening station, and I can clearly see the mirror of Awake!! So what's the point of my story? That in a span of 5 minutes in the Midwest at a music store, 6 totally unrelated people bought Awake. If this is any indication of sales, look out boys and girls.....

    By the way, what did we all think of the Lie video? Still a bit seizure-inducing, but an improvement for sure! But of course no Kev! Guess it's time to get use to it.

    I have a few questions that I hope can be answered by our knowledgable ytsejam community:

    1. We've talked about the Awake front, but what about the back...What's the significance of the nuts and rusty bolts in back. Indicating they got "screwed" by Kev's departure or what? Suggestions?

    2. Could someone please post the lyrics for "A Change of Seasons". Don't think they're at the DT site. 3. This is very important to me, but I don't know if anyone would know this or not. Does anyone know exactly the brand and model of keyboards that Kevin used in studio and on the tour? I've always been trying to figure it out.

    Thanks very much, all.

    Well, they played Lie on HBB today. I wasn't THAT impressed with the video. I woke up at 5:20 this morning though, and the video was on at about 11:45 or so at night... So I was rather tired, and the video kinda makes your head spin. Kinda a cool effect watching the camera act like a car. I taped it so I can watch itlater too (hope the VCR recorded ok, been acting up lately :( Also, next week DT will be on the show :) So that's cool, maybe we can find something out about the album that we don't already know :) About the survey thing, I got one too, and am gonna fill it out and probably mention ytsejam too. Can't hurt any :) I agree with the ppl who were upset with the Awake cassette. Happened to me too. Luckily, a friend of mine bought the CD too, didn't like it too much and sold it to me for $10 :) Otherwise I would've had to wait a while to buy it. I won't give a review of the album since everyone else has pretty much covered everything *grin* Chris

    On DT's three albums I have found something weird. I am a fan of music that doesn't really have a true vocal chorus because it sometimes implies a more progressive nature. So here is a breakdown of The # of DT songs on each album with vocal choruses.(useless statistic)

    WDADU A Fortune in Lies: has a chorus Status Seeker: has a chorus The Yste Jam: has no chorus (Duh) The Killing Hand: has no chorus Light Fuse and Get Away: has a chorus Afterlife:has a chorus TOWHtStS:no true chorus Only a Matter of Time:no chorus

    Images and Words Pull Me Under: I don't consider it a chorus since the words change Another Day: has a chorus Take the Time: has no true chorus Surrounded: no chorus Metropolis: no chorus Under a Glass Moon: has chorus Wait for Sleep: has no chorus Leaning to Live: has a chorus

    Awake 6:00: no true chorus words change Caught in a Web: has a chorus Innocence Faded: has a chorus Erotomania: no chorus Voices: no true chorus words change The Silent Man: has a chorus The Mirror: no chorus Lie: has chorus Lifting Shawdows Off a Dream: has a chorus Scarred: no true chorus words change Space-Dye Vest: no chorus

    WDADU- 4 of 8 songs have choruses- 50% Images and Words- 4 of 8 songs have choruses- 50% Awake- 5 of 11 songs have choruses- 46%

    So to come to a conclusion Lyrically speaking Dream Theater has maintained their progressiveness throughout the years. I was really bored

    Jeff your interpretation sounds pretty good but if it is true then it seems to me that DT really doesn't care about their lyrics. I just can't imagine the guys reading Kevin's lyrics and saying "cool what is it about?" "It is about how I hate being in a band that has lost its musical direction." Then them saying "great lets use it!!!" For this reason I hope your interpretation is incorrect. Please remember this is just my opinion. I know I will get a lot of mail on it.

    Riki Rackman (sp) did say that they would be on HBB next weekend...

    Also, there was a commercial for Awake on before the video played from Camelot Records... any other cities have this, or was it just my cable company?

    Well I just saw the Lie video on HBB about 3 min ago. It was a pretty good video. It was the first time I had heard the single and it sounds like a completely diffirent song. It was really cool getting to see John playing his solo. But it was sadly missing the appearance of Kevin. But other than that it was cool. For those of you who didn't see it, it was filmed on the streets of a city. The cameras were moving really fast and right before it ran into an object like a car or one of the band members it would switch to another scene. Most of the footage was of James singing.

    two questions to those of you who saw it. there were a lot of things blurred out why?? was it me or did it look like Mike gained a lot of weight? It might have just been the baggy clothes.

    VERY IMPORTANT: Rikki said that Dream Theater would be on next week's HBB. Let's hope they live up to their word this time.

    > Why is this album called Awake? I really don't think that this title

    I've already commented on this... but I'll do it again since I've analized the lyrics more now....

    > So, what to call it? I think maybe "Loss" would be more appropriate. To > name a few obvious songs to back this up: 6:00 (loss of a loved one);

    This is NOT a song about loss of a loved one... sorry. :) Its about Kevin leaving, I think the meaning is very clear. He is always mentioning melody and music, and then he says nobody knows what they want until they've finally let it all go. He wrote this song AFTER he decided to leave DT and this was (besides SDV) his last lyric work. However he's not regreting his descion. He then says, Don't count your losses to soon, and if you don't answer your call you'll no one else will. I think Kevin has awakened and seen what he REALLY wants to do with his future... not a dark song really, one of awakening. > CiaW (loss of consortium/reality);

    Hmm... I'm not sure since I still haven't gone through the lyrics for this one, but my impression is that you're probably right on this.

    > IF (loss of innocence/faith);

    A loss of innocence, in my opinion, IS awakening... I think its about the band awakening and seeing the reality of the music business... who knows though. > AMBI (loss of faith/sanity);

    I'm not sure about this one either, since the lyrics for Voices are so weird... It could be a loss of sanity. However I think in Voices it could be about loss, but in Silent Man, I could be about regaining that what was lost, I'm not really sure.

    > The Mirror/Lie (loss of trust/self);

    Well, I think that the person in Mirror is talking to the person in Lie... the Mirror person has hurt the Lie person bascially. The Lie person has awakened. (Probably Kev's girlfriend.) Also, in the Mirror has awakened because he's seen his error.

    > LSoaD (loss of a loved one);

    This was written by Myung and he still has a girl... I think he IS writing about his girl, but he's saying how much he loves her "She can turn a drop of water into an ocean." He hasn't lost her. Also the title would suggest that of awakening... Lifting Shadows off a Dream... maybe Myung feels that his relationship has awakened him and shown him what true love really is.

    > Scarred (loss of faith/hope/trust);

    Again, this is a WEIRD LYRIC song by John... :) uhm, from only glancing at it, it would seem that John's loved on is saying "Love, don't stare" etc... but the don't rape me again line, I think thats mental rape but I don't understand the corralation between the two lines... I really can't comment about this song....

    > SDV (loss of love)

    Well... Kev awakened in this too (even though this track was an after thought.) He saw what he was doing with the girl in the SDV and came to his senses... Also, Kev iterates his awakening of his real future in the I saw the future dressed as a stranger line....

    I think Awake could be a synonym for changing your view of reality... Every song deals about a change from within... the band are changing their views/opinions about love, life, and the music business, much like Peart did back before Rush when he moved to London... Anyway, all this is strictly my opinion. :)

    Well, after being flooded with Awake reviews over the past week (I know you all think that I will now go and review the album just to spite you, but I will refrain since what I say won't really persuade any of you to buy, or not to buy Awake, since most have anyways). I have decided to post. General comments and impressions:

    Voices and Scarred really impressed me on the first listen

    SDV left me with an empty, drained feeling on the first listen, it felt like my heart had been torn out by some savage witch doctor or something (Second Indiana Jones movie). I basically sat there and said, "Wow, anything I listen to after this will pale in comparison."

    BTW I put a Marillion show from 1983 in the tape deck after this song and listened to Fish cut down people in a Rochester bar. Only way to go after SDV. <grin>

    Has anyone in the Balto-Wash metroplex heard any new DT on the radio, I know Pull Me Under got a lot of play, but I have yet to hear Lie. Justt curious, I would be willing to both some radio station personel to get this played.

    I will be greatly interested in copies of performances from this tour if anyone can acquire one (of course once the tour starts I'm sure everyone will want one).

    I'll see the locals at Hammerjacks on the 27th, I'll be the tall one wearing the Orioles hat, Ytsejam shirt and making faces at the new keyboard player. <grin>

    Later,

    Psychocat,

    The Buffalo show is the 24th at Connecticut Street Armory! I don't think ticketMaster is selling the tickets for this show. I've been to one other show in Buffalo which was an Ozzy concert and the ticket dealer was Prime Seats. So, you need to either find a Prime Seats outlet or give them a call. I have the number but it's in another mail so I'll mail this and then mail the number. I don't know if it's sold out. I'll call the place where I got my tickets and find out, but they are closed today. I got my tickets for $14.25, surcharge included. A phone order might be different though. I hope this helps! Oh, I got my tickets at Record Theatre, a Prime Seats outlet.

    I'll keep my first-post message short: "Hi!"

    Anyway, I'm another one of the million who've developed a deep appreciation for Awake. I haven't listened to anything else since I got my copy (well, maybe once or twice, but that's it!). I'm very upset that Kev's left the band, and SDV didn't help much, as I contend it's the *best* song on the album. It's the one I listen to the most, and it's got that eerie sense of finality that it should, as Kevin's not with them anymore.

    Once again, they've proved themselves as incredible writers and performers. I wanted to reply to something that Chris Oates wrote in his perception of "Lie." I don't think the "She comes in apparently..." verse is a cynical person finding out that there is still good things in the world; it's more like a cynical person withdrawing even more, admitting to himself that there is no good in the world. He's saying, "I've gotten used to being destroyed at the hands of liars/women/whatever. She's apparently supposed to fill the void in my life." Being that a man wrote this, and there are inferences that he's talking about a woman, it seems more like a man/woman relationship (probably romantic) than anything else. That's also reinforced by the chorus -- "Don't tell me you wanted me..."

    Strong points in the album -- opening chords to Voices, the "Like a scream but sort of silent" part, and the "Seen my diary on the newstand" part of Voices...very nice vocal melodies. The grooves in 6:00 and Lie are great. One of the best vocal parts is when LaBrie doubles the chorus in LSOAD near the end. "The Silent Man" is just great, and last but not least, SDV.

    Weak points....I can't really think of any...<g>

    Jennifer (AirDance@aol.com) -- I regret that I haven't had any personal contact ever with the band, and for the record, you can count me extremely envious of you! Where'd you get a "demo" version of Space-Dye Vest? I'd really like to negotiate possibly getting a copy.

    Whoever said something about the static in SDV, it's just a pink noise generator. You can pick one up from Radio Shack for like $20. I'm sure Kev's got one built into just about any keyboard he's got. As for your parents not being able to hear it, if they're older, they might be losing some of their high-frequency response. Can you hear the 17kHz whistle on the "No one can say how he feels" sample? That's usually from having audio equipment near a TV, you pick that up.

    And finally (sorry this took so long), has anyone compiled a "script" of all the samples and spoken parts throughout the album yet? There's a lot of stuff, like in SDV, that's just "under" the music enough to not be able to get all of it (the big examples for me are the "Houston/180 Degrees" sample and the one, "If you're not in this house by 9:00...").

    Maybe I'm looking into it too much, but how about finding a correlation between the "in this house by 9:00" sample and Kev's line in 6:00, "It's 9:00 but he can't get out"?

    (No? I didn't think so.)

    Wow, everybody seems to be seeing that anything Kevin wrote is about him leaving DT in some sort of angry way... I don't really see it. Yes, the album is about change and realization which can apply to Kevin, but I think he's a more tactful songwriter than to write everything about how he hates being in the band that is recording the song... That, and I don't remember hearing anything about Kevin being angry about leaving.
