Yeah... I'm not sure what he means by Death is sex... but oh well. :)

anyway, I think my favorite lyrical point is when he sings see my diary
on the newsstand, seems we've lost the truth to quick sand... just beautiful.
my fav guitar/key solo.... i don't know, there are so many good ones! Not
many really stand out like the ones like on Metropolis... at least not
yet. I'm still getting into Scarred and Voices... I'll have to get back
    with you on this one.

well, since there are so many samples which one are your favorites? I
think one really stands above the other in all respects, its the girl on
Mirror when she says All you need is around you, all you fear is inside
you. REALLY spooky the way she says it. Great sample and it adds a lot to
the mirror. I really like all the samples unlike some people.

That'd be cool... I've never actually bought a Ryche CD, actually I've
never heard any songs of theirs. However if they're like DT, I'm sure
I'll be impressed. I really need to get some. Which one would ya'll
recommend? (I'll probably get the new one when it comes out and then if I
like it will buy another one.) Which one do you guys like the most? I
still need to get IO too... I do however have other FW cds.

    Yes and No.

The email archive (that you should have heard about if you've subscribed
since the move) has all back issues since the move. It has some of the
issues from before the move and will eventually have all of the issues in
it (I just need to find the time to put them there).

To get a list of what's currently there, send

    index ytsejam

to ytsejam-request@arastar.com and you'll receive a list in email. To
retrieve files (like issues 514 and the faq) you would send:

    get ytsejam ytsejam.514
    get ytsejam ytsejam.940615.faq

    to ytsejam-request@arastar.com

Sending index or get requests to ytsejam@arastar.com will not retrieve
anything (except maybe some hatemail from the subscribers who get ticked
    off).

If I ever can get some vacation time, I should be able to complete the
    archive at that time.

During the Renaissance, Death was a euphemism for orgasm. I think that's what they're referring to (since they've had Shakespeare and Joyce in their songs).

    More unfinished business.

Today I'll start with an interesting topic that just came up -- album highlights. Here are mine: The chorus in 6:00 (Melody walks...) Solo/Instrumental in CiaW Intro to Scarred (bluesey stuff) *Silent Man part in Eroto *the rest of voices starting from the "I'm lying here in bed/ swear my skeen :) is inside out..." *SDV The last three highlights just totally give me chills when I hear them. I have to say that Voices is really starting to amaze me with the imagery, and the composition in general. And BTW, I really don't think that Eroto wanders. Scarred, on the other hand....

About the samples: Just wanted to throw in my tusence. Here: I don't think that samples in general are bad, and I usually enjoy them -- as long as they add to the song. In SDV, especially, that "180 degrees in Houston" just seems so irrelevant, it doesn't add anything.

About William Wrights question concerning "Death is sex:" My guess is that it's an allusion to the (Islamic) belief that Paradise is the equivalent of one long orgasm. (Don't mean to insult any Muslims out there, that's just how it was explained in our Islamic studies class :) )

Last thing (gonna be late for class again) Am I the only one, or does it sound to anyone else like LaBrie is singing "Caught in a web/ New from the womb" rather than Removed from the world??

    I depart.

I think you are talking about ALOT of pictures. It is an interesting idea, but how many people are on the list? I seriously doubt people are going to take the time to download all of those pictures. It might work well if someone agreed to take all of the pictures and make one or two giant combo pictures or a collage of some sort.

BTW, I still have not bought Awake yet! I have 21 cd's on order right now, and can't justify another cd purchase until next month. :(

Hi, to everybody on this list. I've got the AWAKE Japanese edition and it features the members' message for Japanese fans. I'll quote it just for your interests.

John Petrucci: Being prepared was a key element that contributed to the successful recording of AWAKE. Unlike our previous studio releases, this one had the benefit of hundreds of live performances shaping sounds and developing new ideas for equipment and instrumentation. This, coupled with a trusting relationship with our producers, resulted in a truer expression of creative vision. We are very pleased with this recording and excited about playing it live.

James LaBrie: I had a great time recording, and working with John and Duane was a pleasure because not only do they get amazing sounds, but they truly understand the music.

John Myung: With the recording of this album, sonically I think we've all made individual improvements. Each of us has a distinct sound, you can hear each instrument by itself and also hear how they all work together.

Mike Portnoy: Upon finishing the never-ending world tour for I & W , the five of us found ourselves bursting with creative excitement ready to explode. The shrapnel of these ideas is what you are now listening to. I feel that AWAKE is our most diverse and complete work to date, and I hope it is as enjoyable for you to listen to as it was for us to create.

Kevin Moore: I had fun experimenting with keyboard sounds with John & Duane. I'm very happy with the raw quality we came up with.

Well, that's all of their messages. It seems that Kevin was not much into this album from his words, don't you think? BTW, Eve is great.... It always makes me wanna cry. Something beautiful touches to my mind. Of course, the rest of AWAKE is very good music, I think.

Yeah, you could well be right. On a Queensryche note, I think Promised Land sets off Awake perfectly. It has the same dark mood to it while not being quite so heavy. And that last track, `Someone Else?'...wow...I have difficulty knowing which I prefer; this or SDV. Just Geoff on a piano. They should have done something like this before.

Also, has anyone else noticed a trend with these albums with respect to smaples? OK, so both bands have always used samples a bit, but these latest efforts are strewn with them all over the place. I kinda like them..

Sorry to all those who have to wait till next Tuesday to pick up Promissed Land, but it's worth waiting for (and what's another few days after four years of waiting ;)

Oh yeah, any Ytsejammers intending to go to the ryche show in London next Thursday? I've still got to get tickets, if there's any left, but if I manage it maybe I'll see some of you there...

I can't do that... but I guess you knew I was going to say that. :) I promised him I wouldn't copy it for anyone, but if he ever changes his mind about that, YJ will be the first to know, naturally. :)

    >>>And finally (sorry this took so long), has anyone compiled a "script" of all the samples and spoken parts throughout the album yet? There's a lot of stuff, like in SDV, that's just "under" the music enough to not be able to get all of it (the big examples for me are the "Houston/180 Degrees" sample and the one, "If you're not in this house by 9:00...").<<<

Well, here's my interpretation of the samples in SDV, FWIW (yes, I really DO have a lot of free time on my hands :) :

I think it's pretty much common knowledge now that this first one is from _A Room With A View_.

"...but he's the sort who can't know anyone intimately, least of all a woman. He doesn't know what a woman is. He wants you for a possession, something to look at like a painting or, or an ivory box. Something to own and to display. He doesn't want you to be real, or to think or to live. He doesn't love you...but I love you. I want you to have your own thoughts and ideas and feelings, even when I hold you in my arms...it's our last chance...it's our last chance..."

"I was gonna move out...umm...get, get a job, get my own place, umm, but...I go into the mall where I want to work and they tell me, I'm, I was too young..."

Here is the as of now still unconfirmed "O.J police chase" quote:

"Some people gave advice before about facing the facts, about facing reality. And this is, this without a doubt, is his biggest challenge ever. He's going to have to face it. You're gonna have to try, he's gonna have to try and, uh, and, and, and get some help here. I mean, you know, now no one can say they know how he feels..."

"That's what they say that, like that in Houston, or something. They say 'yeah, it's 180 degrees, but it's a dry heat.'"

    "In Houston they say that?"

"Oh, maybe not, I'm all mixed up."

"Dry until they hit the swimming pool."

(unintelligible talking)"...I'll get up with the sun...she doesn't, she doesn't want you to sleep in...I don't care what you do, I don't care what you say, you're grounded...that door gets locked, that door gets locked at night by 9 o'clock. If you're not in this house by 9 o'clock, then you'd better find someplace to sleep...you think you can go to your mom's house and sucker her into it?..."(unintelligible talking)

Hope someone's got something to add/corrections because those are still woefully incomplete methinks! :)

    1. Space-Dye Vest (like any of you doubted that, coming from me) 2. 6:00 3. Scarred 4. Lifting Shadows Off A Dream

honorable mention: the Dregs-like jam at the end of Innocence Faded - too bad it wasn't developed into a separate song of it's own

Just to throw in my two cents....my 4 favorites are:

    1) 6:00 2) Space-Dye Vest 3) The Silent Man 4) Voices

I don't see why everybody seems to complain about Lie...maybe it's because I never heard it until I got the CD.....Scarred is starting to grow on me so I think my top 4 may be changing soon!!

Thank you...that's what I meant when I said "You can feel..."...It is repeated a couple times and I really think that it can be considered a chorus..........then again, that's MHO.

Here's something non-Awake related for once..:) It's a little anecdote some people might relate to and some might not - if you don't then just bear with me....

I don't know about anyone else, but I was in a marching band for over four years...now with marching band, one of the main points was to walk to the beat of the music....it was a wonder how difficult it was for some people.....anyway.... I stopped with the marching band about 4 years ago, but it still haunts me (its scary how something like marching band can screw your mind up)...and it haunts me in this way....

I have a tendency to walk around alot (to store, around campus, etc.) with my Walkman on.....you don't know how difficult it becomes when you are listening to DT on your damn Walkman and you find yourself trying to walk to the beat of some of the songs....and this is all an involuntary reaction...I could just be walking along and BOOM! I trip over myself or something - why? you guessed it - there was some kind of time sig change in the song....Very frustrating... I can imagine what people driving past me are saying...

Anyway, sorry to bore you with this story, but its the truth and I think some people out there will find this pretty amusing...

    Later.....

I just picked up this week's issue of The Aquarian, and in it there is a review of Awake..... This review is such a great example of how dangerous it could be to put your opinion on an album after one or few listens... It starts off very good, but then falls into comments which aren't very true....I know this is vague but i don't have the review on me right now....It's a short review, so maybe I'll post it....if there's a problem with posting this, let me know....

Although all of you in Japan get all these cool bonus tracks, attached singles etc., you DO have to pay alot more for the album than we do here in the states.

For ex. I bought LatM in Japan for 2000 or 2500 yen which is about $20-$25 (I haven't been check the yen rate lately, but I'm assuming arround 100yen = $1).

My dad used to live in Kobe (near Osaka) and there's a place there where one can buy imported CDs, they run about 1700-1800 yen where the same CDs released by the Japanese companies cost 2000-2500 yen. So you can see that, especcially since the imports reach stores over there almost as soon as they are released here, and the offical Japanese ed. release is about 3 weeks later (for most CDs), they have to stick in some extra goodies (translation of lyrics, commentary, bonus tracks, CD singles, etc.) so that people will buy the Japanese version.

Ya know... maybe we could solve this federal deficit thang solely by exporting AWAKE! just a thought... but I guess it would have to be the first 10 billion CD seller! I don't think they have that many people in the world!?

anyway, I was wondering what the price of AWAKE was in Japan. Did you say that EVE is a CDsingle (the small one)?

Buy the way most of the Japanese domestic CDs are 3000 yen = $30 !!!!! I bought Hotei Tomoyasu's Guitarythm IV for that this summer... Paid about $40-$50 to see him in concert......damn.

DT is $21.50 (after the crappy $4 Ticket Bastard markup). What a deal compared to this summer.
