Hey people!

I feel like there is too much tension starting up over this new Queensryche:
Promised Land release. I thought we were all quite open minded around here
8). I can understand the concern as to where their direction is headed, but
to totally "go-off" on one of the BIGGEST progressive bands in America is a
little much for a progressive music fan. I just could be able to see their
point of view a little better, but Promised Land is a quite aptly-named title
for the "concept" of the album.

P. L. isn't really on as much of the heavy side as Counterparts and Awake
are, BUT is that a really good reason to just ignore the material totally?!
An introspective, thought-provoking album was something I was looking for
from them since there has been so much going on in the world around us, and
them. Experiences seem to dictate the expressions of a musician and an
artist of any type for that matter. Can I hear some positive, intelligent
thoughts that we, as progressives, should be listening for and finding in the
lyrics of their music? This really was a "strain" on their emotions and
friendships, IMHO, to HAVE to write about these feelings as a means of
understanding some of the reasons why. It was NOT hard to write and play as
they had the material just setting there, like a volcano ready to BLOW!

One of my thoughts on the overall view of Queensryche as a progressive band
since the release of Promised Land.
Each person's view on the album as a whole is shadowed by the fact that there
is STILL EMOTION in THEIR MUSIC. The emotion in many of the songs are of the
feeling of desperation and speculation about themselves. The writers were in
so much of a situation with what they were feeling that this is how they
express it. Music that's slow and moody and intended combine with lyrics
that are purposeful and sometimes sorrowful make for a very dramatic piece of
music.

Sorry for length, but I just had to get this off my chest.

Sorry to those who wanted everyone to post "spoiler" in the titles of the
messages, I wrote the Baltimore Show message at two in the morning after
the concert, I was dead tired. Just wanted to get the info out to those
inquiring minds on here. I'm not used to seeing a band this early in
their tour, unsually by the time I get to post info, everyone knows all
of the set lists.

Mild SPOILER!!!

Ok,
The songs off the first album that have been performed live are
as follows. (These are all sung by James)

A Fortune in Lies (performed early 93 and for most of the tour, found on
Live at the Marquee and Dance of Eternity)

Status Seeker (performed at the Summerfest show in Milwaukee 6/29/93,
I think this is on the Dream Out Loud set also,
its that one or Lords of Sound)

The Ytse Jam (performed early 93 and during most of the tour til the
end. Found on Dance of Eternity and Lost in the Sky)

The Killing Hand (performed on and off through the tour, found on Live at
the Marquee, Dance of Eternity, Home Sweet Home)

Light Fuse and Get Away (Never done live, though in interviews they are
possibly going to do it during this tour)

Afterlife (End of last tour with Mission Impossible intro, found on
                         Lost in the Sky)

The Ones Who Help to Set the Sun (done live a few times on Awake tour, I
saw them do it in Baltimore, most people
didn't get it, I was one of the few singing
                                  along)

Only A Matter of Time (found on Lost in the Sky, and Home Sweet Home)

I too have thought about putting this collection together as a live tape
with James on vocal, but I'm waiting for them to do Light Fuse, be
interesting to see what James does with the vocals.

thanks a lot for typing in the article. it was interesting.
Funny, how the interviewer mentioned WDADU as their first album,
and then later referred to I&W as their first and Awake as their
second, totally forgetting about WDADU.
It was great to learn that there will be a Vancouver date, too.
I was a bit worried there. :)

Just to follow up on someone's question about taking pictures at a concert... Everything depends on where you are, security, etc.

I bought disposable panoramic Kodak 400 speed cameras, and they didn't turn out too well. I was very close to the stage for both shows, and they just didn't work well. I really think that you need a flash, which could be problematic if the place doesn't allow cameras.

I was able to easily sneek a camera in, but in Providence, I think the guard saw me taking a picture, sent aother guard in, and he confiscated a camera from someone standing 2 feet away from me.

If the place allows cameras, bring a good one in... If not, a disposable one will have to do, unless you are up for risking it being confiscated... Unlike a recorder, which can be very well hidden, a camera can't.

Thanks for the article. People do really appreciate the work you put in for us. I have one question though. You mentioned three Canadian dates, the closest of which to me is Vancouver. When they come back to North America, are they gonna play any other Canadian venues? I've never had the chance to see DT before, and i still haven't been able to find When Dream and Day Unite. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

What I got was "Hear the drummer get wick-ed!" -- isn't that some kind of rap song? I'm not the person to ask about rap, but it seems familiar.

Well I used to be a huge QR fan and I loved Empire and Operation Mindcrime. But I just can't believe that they put forth their best effort on this and I am really disappointed. I think they just let all of their fans down. Their just isn't enough music in this album. Like in Promised Land, I was really looking forward to hearing this song because of the time length. But after around 6 minutes it's the same thing over and over, and the last minute or so is just samples. Of course I was into QR before DT but after I got into DT I went back to listen to Empire and after hearing the musicianship of DT it made QR seem obsolete. To be able to compete with masters like Rush or the brilliant songwriting of DT, the aging QR needs to focus more on the musical aspect of their albums and worry less about sending a political message in their lyrics. Now I do think bands progressive should have good lyrics but they must also realize they need to be able to entertain with music. Notice how QR doesn't have any Instrumentals.

I don't think that's the reason. I have been using *exclusively* cassettes ever since I started buying music to listen to. It has been my experience that EVERY time a cassette gets eaten, it means there's something wrong with the tape player. By this, I mean there's something in the tape player that needs repair, not that tape players are generally bad. I have several albums on tape that are more than an hour long which have NEVER been eaten by a player. Personally, I favor the explanation that the music industry is just trying to send consumers a hint (albeit a rather strong one).

Yeah, sometimes it's harder to relate to very personal emotion because rarely is it something common to both the critic and the artist, but that doesn't remove any of the validity of the art. I think with QR we've come to expect alot of very social statements -- emotions we can all relate to because the issues are common to us all. It's a very different thing to try to relate to someone's thoughts and feelings about his father. This is something only he can know. Yes, DT accomplished this damn well with much of the music on Awake, but they are the exception to the rule. They also put things in more general and artistic terms than QR did and that's a valid style. A bit more visceral...

Ok, maybe they weren't talking about minutes, then. Maybe they were talking about the number of songs or even the number of notes, just for the sake of carrying something cleanly into the realm of the ridiculous. I guess it's just not a big enough deal to me to warrant the vigor of the objection.

I suppose I do see your point though, to be fair.

Ok. It sort of depends what company is doing the rating. It is as common for disk-drive manufacturers to use million-bytes and call them Megs (using the actual decimal equivalent 1000=k and 1000000=M) as it is for them to use the binary form (which was adopted by the early computer geeks) 1024=k and 1048576=M.

I wonder which standard they're using? I assumed it was the decimal standard because it makes it look like you're getting more data and that means more money (more manufacturers use the decimal than not, for that reason), but that may not be the case. Thanks for bringing that up.

>Also, data compression schemes can raise the length of an audio CD to well >over 85 minutes, but it is expensive, thus the rarity.

How does this work? Is there some sort of algorhythm that allows the CD player to figure out whether or not there is compression being used? I was pretty sure that the standards adopted by the CD folks didn't allow for compression and that it was only being used on the new format recordable mini-disks.

Anyone know?

They are much better than I thought. I only heard one song, so I'm not passing any judgements but I'd be interested to hear the opinions of other folks who know good music (namely all the Ytsejammers).

>One other thing...I heard somebody at the show say that Mike Portnoy is the >next Neil Peart. Let me say this: I'm a Rush fan and I think Portnoy pisses on >Peart!!!

<grin> Ouch! Well, I've been a pretty hardcore Rush fan for over a dozen years (hell, Neil taught me how to play drums and doesn't even know it) and I wouldn't exactly say Mike _pisses_ on Neil <g>, but probably the toughest thing for me to ever say in my musical career is that I think that Mike will soon be taking over in the drum-god department. He might have to put forth a few more albums to prove his stability and versatility and to acheive Neil-hood, but I gotta admit that I've been able to duplicate (_duplicate_, NOT write with the same intensity!) all of Neil's stuff and Mike gives me more headaches than Neil ever did. For that matter he gives me more headaches than the last ten-pound sledgehammer I tangled with...

>Just my opinion..

<still grinning> mine too --- more or less.

>Vin D.

>P.S. Mike's from Jersey anyway...he'd have to be awesome :)

Personally, I don't need two version of "Awake", so I like to listen to PL whenever I'm in a "quieter" mood, and "Awake" for the heavier moments. :-)

Songs like "Bridge", "Lady Jane" and "Someone Else?" are just beautiful ballads IMHO (*listen* to them and read the lyrics), stuff like "I Am I" and "Damaged" kicks some serious butt, and "One More Time" is one heck of a hymn, can get that brilliant chorus out of my head ...

So, maybe you give it another listen, I'm just so glad *two* awesome albums have come out this month and they've been taking turns in my CD-player for quite some time now. :-)

No reason to be disappointed IMO.

Not only is Scarred missing on Tape... it's also missing in concert so far... that's as bad as not playing The Killing Hand!!

I throught tracks 8,10 & 11 were good myself.

Funny that both tracks 11 on PL & Awake are piano tracks.

Wow, what an elaborating review of "Promised Land" that was ... If you don't like it, fine (I love it), but stating that "they were broke and just needed money" is just plain silly IMO.

BTW: After "Empire", Queensryche spent almost two years on the road, took a year off, and worked on PL for a little over a year, I believe.

I don't really understand all these posting saying "'Awake' is great, 'PL' is pale in comparison" etc., they're totally different IMHO and it doesn't make much sense comparing them since they're two magnificent pieces of music, each one in their own stylistic department.

Quoting someone else (sorry for infringing on any copyrights :->):

"If you don't like all these great bands anymore, ship them over to Europe."

Some don't seem to realize that there'll never be another "Mindcrime", at least not by Queensryche. They leave the repeating to others ...
