WHEN is Dream Theater playing Los Angeles? It was near the end of September right?

See, a local radio station here in AZ (97.9 KUPD Phoenix) is putting together their annual superconcert on 10/1/94, called U-Fest. They have already announced the presence of Lucy's Fur Coat, Meat Puppets, Gin Blossoms, Sepultura, and a bevy of smaller bands. However they announced this morning that they were trying tog et Dream Theater for the headlining spot!!

What I want to know is, is this even possible? Do they have a chance? Based on where DT is at the time, they just might.. but I'd like to know more info if it's out there...

Also, how many people out there are in the Boston area? As long as everyone else seems to be already planning for a DT show... we might as well also plan... :) -- +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Caught In A Web | | Numb from the world | | Hanging on by a thread | | Scared of the life that fights in my head | | Dream Theater Caught In A Web Awake | | release date for Dream Theater's Awake: October 4, 1994 | +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Michael Burstin Brandeis University | +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ For info about Dream Theater, finger mikeb@cs.brandeis.edu

Well, the controversy over SDV is over... It is NOT an instrumental song... How do I know? I just downloaded the .MP2 file from ftp.music.net and am listening as I type.

The file is not the entire song, it is only about 55 seconds of the song... It sounds VERY different from ANYTHING that I have heard from DT before. It is a very mellow song, but there is something in the background, which I can't tell if it is distortion or part of the song, but there is an incredibly deep reoccuring sound that almost sounds like a water pump or something like that in the background.

I don't really thinik that anyone will be able to make a judgement about SDV for a while, b/c it cuts off so early, and you can hear someone (perhapse Kevin) start some lyrics as the song cuts off... Obviously, especially with DT, you cant really tell anything about a song hearning only 55 seconds of it... -- +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Caught In A Web | | Numb from the world | | Hanging on by a thread | | Scared of the life that fights in my head | | Dream Theater Caught In A Web Awake | | release date for Dream Theater's Awake: October 4, 1994 | +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Michael Burstin Brandeis University | +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ For info about Dream Theater, finger mikeb@cs.brandeis.edu

Anyone know when Dream Theater will be playing? I'm moving to Pasadena on the 19th, but I'll be occupied until the afternoon on 23rd. Too bad LA public transportation bites! :)

    Hi all,

Nobody here has been talking much about the guys from DT being on Compuserve on Sept. 8. Does anything know anymore about this. Since I don't have Compuserve access I was wondering if there is anyone out there on the list in Madison, WI that is going to witness this interview and would invite me into their home so that I could also watch it?

Also about that cool sticker that is in Guitar World magazine....is this sticker only available to those ppl that subscribe? If so does anyone know the phone number to Guitar World magazine so that I could maybe call and request a sticker?

Also what does the band Solitude Aeturnus sound like?

Thanx for any help ppl can give me.

    Jason

Okay, I finally downloaded it and gave it a listen.

The problem: Way too little keys. I don't mind them sounding a bit grungish (I don't think it's all that bad, and it's more of a production thing than compositional, and James's singing is not very grungy), and it doesn't bother me too much that it's simpler than most of the stuff from I&W (It's still technically impressive, it's just one song, no indication the whole album will be like that.) But the lack of keyboards really bothers me. Maybe they're there doing subtle things that I can't hear because of the poor sound quality. I hope so. I also thought maybe the last solo might be keys and guitars, but it's very hard to tell on the .wav and I think it's probably just guitar. Which is very disappointing.

I don't...I always sort of considered Kev and John P. to be the leaders of the band, primarily because they play the lead instruments and write most of the lyrics. Without Kevin, I'm afraid Petrucci might dominate. Which would not be bad at all (I consider J.P. a bit of a genius, lyrically and compositionally), but it also wouldn't be Dream Theater. I hope the lack of keys on this song isn't an indication of things to come.

Okay, good things about the song...I find it rhythmically interesting throughout, and the ending is fantastic (would be better with more keys, obviously.) John's solo closing the thing is really spectacular and adds a dimension that the song is lacking for the first four minutes. I like it a lot...just wish there were more keys. I also recognized pup in there...I'm hoping it'll show up elsewhere on the album, like when Mike said there would be some musical themes present throughout. I expect to hear it (in a more recognizable form) on 6:00... I hope so, anyway, cuz it's really cool.

    Oh well...that's all for now.

Hold on...I heard an interview sometime in the winter (I was just finished skating, so it must have been winter) that Joe Satriani was going to play with Deep Purple. This was in an interview with Ian Gillan...it is Ian isn't it? I always get the Gillan's mixed up!

Hi! Now I just heard Innocence Faded from Awake on the radio! I'm VERY impressed by it! It is pleasant ballade, like....Another Hand, I guess. Some part of it sounds like Journey. Very simple, but very beautiful. ..mmm... I can't express well... But, I find they never lost their sensibility like on I&W. I think we can't judge Awake by only Lie. Perhaps some songs have new venture but some songs take over I&W. I want to be open-minded for both songs. They accept Lie on first single and it's risk for them, however, if they accept a song like on I&W they become fixing their image, I guess. I don't want to part 2 of I&W. I love it very much, but suppose they have many more ideas than on I&W. If Awake is filled with songs like Lie, I can't understand it but I think they have more different kind of songs on Awake. :) Jonathan Larkowski<larkows3@nes.nersc.gov> wrote: >Anyway, I must say that the song did not impress me to much at first. >But after listening to it a couple 40 times or so. Okay! I've heard it through dozens of times now and without spoiling it for everyone I WILL say that you'll be more than satisfied with this album. Heavier, darker, but with plenty of riffing/jamming. This is not I & W, the sequel but, hey, this is STILL Dream Theater. You won't be disappointed. I'm totally obsessing on this album and can't take it out of the tape deck.

I assume that the download of the single is the same as the radio version so you may be interested to know that there is a *slight* difference between the single and the way the tune appears on the album.

On the album The Mirror runs right into Lie so that the tunes almost become a two-part song. The end of Mirror is a nice instrumental that segues perfectly into Lie. The difference is that the single has that drum break that opens the song but is NOT on the album!
