I will be there (in about two hours!)

But the copys of the MTV DT thing, people in Europe can't copy it for us
because their VRC format is different than ours and it, well it costs a
lot of money to convert the two formats.

Sorry to make you iterate this again, but could you repost the info about
these Rush tapes? Like whats on them, cost, etc? Thanks, I was ignorant
to Rush when you posted the first messages about them, however, now I
have seen the light and am very interested in this. Thanks.

    Subject: a few things...

    Hey... a few quick things...

First off, how did IRC go? Unfortunatly, they happened to pick the
holiest days of the Jewish year to be on IRC, so I was unable to be
    on-line for the chat :(

Now, since I didn;t see IRC, I am not sure if this info came out or
    not...

First off, there will be NO Fates Warning/Dream Theater tour... I
don't understand why, but they won't be touring together... :(

Also, even worse, we will never hear Space Dye Vest played live, at
least unless Kevin does it whenever he tours to support any solo
projects (he is still represented by DT's managemtnet (Round Table, I
think))... SDV really was Kevin's song, and they are not going to
    play it live... :(

Anyway, my copy of Awake still hasn't leaft my tape deck, except to
check out a copy of Gary Hoey's Endless Summer II soundtrack which I
just picked up. (BTW, a really cool CD, if you have not heard of
Hoey, he basically is another Joe Satriani)... As of now, I think
Scarred is my favorite song... for the time being... (It took me
about a year to settle down and choose Learning To Live as my favorite
track from I&W)... Scarred has a really cool instrumental section,
reminiscant of TTT or LTL... really awsome song...

<boreo> John: not born in Korea ... born in Chicago. Speaks very little Korean

<boreo> John: has always WANTED to tour with Fates Warning. It's a possibility if it would happen someday, but it would be fun

<boreo> questions will be posted by "askme"

<boreo> Why a heavier album? <boreo> Mike: always had a heavy influence. This time around, they tried to compress the heavier parts into complete songs rather than heavy parts. Although the album is heavy and aggressive

<boreo> it is a very well-balanced album stylistically

<boreo> people shouldn't judge the whole album by "Lie"

<boreo> Brian_Cox: will change of seasons or eve be released? <boreo> Mike: "Eve" was recorded during awake sessions. It WILL BE RELEASED in Japan on the Japanese version <boreo> "To Live Forever" was also recorded. <boreo> Both will pop up as b-sides or as bonus tracks <boreo> As far as "A Change of Seasons" - it hasnt' been recorded and there are no immediate plans. It haunts them and they would lie to record it but not yet. <boreo> they do want it off their chests

<boreo> Jason: who's the keyboardist? <boreo> Mike: The keyboardist will be Jordan Rudess <boreo> he's out with Dixie Dregs but will most likely be joining DT for the tour <boreo> Mike: no long range, permanent decisions have been made. Options will be left open and see how it goes on tour <boreo> Mike: 3 auditions this afternoon. 5 people total have been interviewd. <boreo> Mike: we admire Jens and his playing. It was fun playing with him. No hard feelings.

<boreo> Mike: question about 180 degrees in "Space Dye Vest" has nothing to do with Houston. <boreo> it's about a relationship

<boreo> Mike says PLEASE BE PATIENT for the album to come out and not get copies <boreo> :-)

<boreo> Bravado: finished opening fo other bands? <askme> on the channel tonight is: John Myung and Mike Portnoy <boreo> John: It's a matter of the right situation coming their way. None of the scenarios have ever happened the way they want. If the right situation comes along, they would consider opening gigs. <boreo> John would love to tour with Rush or Queensryche.

<boreo> Will "A Killing Hand" be played live? <boreo> John: I don't think so. I don't personally have plans of playing anything off the first album. <boreo> they have enough material

<boreo> Most of the stuff on thelast tour, they tried to document on the Marquee CD or the video. They're over and done with for awhile. If they do anything, they will play something more obscure.

<boreo> John: personal favorie from "Awake" is Caught in a Web <boreo> Mike: Voices <boreo> Mike: I'll go on record as saying it's the best song we've ever written

<boreo> Mike: it was tough (at foundations) ... it was awkward and you're not playing to your audience <boreo> the whole situation was very unusual

<boreo> Q: Do you think you've progressed since I&W. If so how <boreo> John: I think we've progressed just because we've been through a lot in the past 3, 3.5 years and going out on tour in support of the album and having to go right back into the studio

<boreo> I think the fact that we've handled the pressure and come out on top taught us a lot abvout ourselves.

<boreo> "Light Fuse and Get Awa"? <boreo> Mike: if we pick songs from the first album, that or "... Set the Sun"

<boreo> Mike: I don't think we would play SDV live anyway. It's a very studio-oriented piece. Without Kevin, we probably won't play it live. EVER.

<boreo> Why did Kevin leave? <boreo> John: the whole thing didn't come out of the blue. He felt that way for awhile and surfaced after A was recorded. <boreo> it was more along the lines of peace of mind and what he wanted to do musically <boreo> he couldn't do it within the band <boreo> he's a passionate person and he wasn't being fair to the band or himself <boreo> out of all sincerity, he didn't want to continue <boreo> it was a musical departure with DT <boreo> they still have the friendship <boreo> Guest appearance? John: I doubt it.

<boreo> Have musical tastes gotten heavier? <boreo> Mike: my musical tastes have always been heavy (Metallica Slayer Megadeth). <boreo> through this album, Pantera, Helmet, Machine Head were in my influences <boreo> we always leave the door open for everyone's influences <boreo> that's where the heaviness has been in the drum department

<boreo> in the G&B departmen, this is the fist time John used a 6-string on the record and John used a 7 string <boreo> Lie Mirror and CIAW were written with the those instruments

<boreo> Do you read? <boreo> John: I don't read very much <boreo> Mike: JohnP reads more and has always writing stories such as Metropolis

<boreo> James' range ... has it improved: <boreo> John: he's doing what he's capable of and it comes through on this record.

<boreo> the mindset of the producers has helped in recording the vocals and what angle (hard or smooth). <boreo> recording techniques and the attitude of th songs has brought out the raw part of his voice <boreo> Mike: the fact he was around since the creation, he was able to contribute his thoughts, and abilities, and his range of his voice

<boreo> are you happier with the current production team? <boreo> Mike: I love them 100% better. It was a joy to make. Whereas I&W was a frustrating record to make <boreo> The producers are much easier to work with. <boreo> Mike: I was much more involved with what I wanted to hear on this record

<boreo> Should I continue buying tickets? <boreo> If you can steal tickets, DO IT. <boreo> Mike: I collect everything ... bootlegs and photos and tickets <boreo> Mike: Hi Pete <boreo> I look forward to seeing ytou on tour. Don't spend anymore money on us <boreo> :-)

<boreo> Overall feeling on bootlegs? <boreo> John: at first i was a little hesitant. a lot of people are making money off us. <boreo> now that I'm sitting back and listening to some of them, I think it's a very very cool way to compliment the band. It's a different way of generating and maintaining interest. <boreo> it's genuine when people go out of our way to find out more about the band <boreo> I'm into it now. <boreo> Mike: way to go John! I've got someone one my side now! <boreo> Mike: they're not doing it for the money. they're doing it as a way to collect

<boreo> Mike: I already have the 78' Rush soundboard recording. Thanks though

<boreo> Reverand asks: do you think it works well with alternating heavy and light sounds? <boreo> Mike: absolutely. our audience has broad tastes. To sit through 75 minutes of the same thing would be boring. <boreo> the diversity of the album makes it so appealing

<boreo> plans for another live album? <boreo> Mike: we want to strees that the Marquee isn't the TRUE LIVE album the way we want <boreo> it's a souvenir of our first european tour <boreo> down the road we would love to do a real live album, which hopefully could be recorded in different nights and in different countrie <boreo> every night there's a different magic in the air that can't be captured on one particular night <boreo> we'll probably do it WAY down the road from now

<boreo> Billy Sheehan an influence? <boreo> John: yeah definitely. he plays with a lot of soul. I've never jammed with hi,m but met him once briefly. <boreo> he's a great player, very inspriational, with a lot of soul <boreo> we used to play som "Talas" songs <boreo> no west coast dates yet

<boreo> Mike: we will end up in LA around 1st, 2nd week in December <boreo> what do you play when you jam? <boreo> Mike: screwing around, Maiden covers are fun. <boreo> they were a HUGE HUGE influence <boreo> we used to do maiden covers all the time <boreo> when we got to play with them it was a dream come true <boreo> mike: we even did a radio jam broadcase in Indianapolis and jammed "The Trooper" on the radio

<boreo> did Mike take lessons? <boreo> Mike: pretty much self-taught. Just from listening to records through the year <boreo> when I first started I took lessons (how to hold sticks) <boreo> at berklee I took classes for everything, but I'm basically self taught <boreo> it was great for my overall musical knowledge <boreo> I took about 5 years of lessons listening to Rush records and Zappa records

<boreo> clubs? colleges? preferred venue? <boreo> Mike: John? <boreo> John: Mike? <boreo> Mike: large clubs/ small theaters <boreo> it's the right environment for us <boreo> depending on the success of the record it will grow, or shrink, accordingly <boreo> Mike: we've been told, be on the lookout for surprise performances

<boreo> sellout? <boreo> Mike: people think bands sellout because htey're popular <boreo> we're not gonna change our style or identity <boreo> if people love this album and it's not selling, and as soon as it sells 1, 2 million copies. they're not gonna like it as too many people buy it <boreo> it's the amount of people that buy it. It's out of the bands control <boreo> maintain your identity and integrity and sell your records

<boreo> the new album has a 20minute trilogy

<boreo> is Labrie going back to himself? <boreo> Mike: James is gonna be called the artist formerly known as James LaBrie and will be using the Majesty symbol instead of a name :-D

<boreo> tour bus? MCI? <boreo> LAUGH <boreo> MTV Support? <boreo> "Lie" video is complete. <boreo> we never expect MTV or radio play. <boreo> the fact they've given us this much support is a shocker <boreo> (this is Mike_ <boreo> radio has been very good to us <boreo> radio isn't trendy enough for mainstream acceptance of us. It would be nice

<boreo> what do you think of mainstream alternative music? <boreo> John: I jus recently bought meat puppets <boreo> Mike: we would be lieing if they haven't influenced us. It's constantly around us and therefore impossible to escape it <boreo> Mike: a lot of people come down on "grunge" and simplicity. A lot of those bands are being daring and creative in a different way <boreo> a lot of it has integrity on its own way

<boreo> Mike: Kevin listens to any band that has a girl singer

<boreo> John: I was using (old cabinets) when we were doing our first two keyboardist auditions. They're great cabinets. They're a bass standard (Ampeg XVT) <boreo> (Ampeg SVT)

<boreo> who's the ladies man? <boreo> Mike: it's Kev. the erst are married/getting there

<boreo> how does Labrie sound live as comapred to studio? <boreo> John: it's always different live because it's a different situation <boreo> he does recreate the record pretty much <boreo> mike: there's always the adrenaline live <boreo> that makes it harder to relax

<boreo> favorite beatles song? <boreo> Mike: I'm a fanatic! I have a tattoo of a Lennon painting on my arm. For me to pick a favorite is impossibe. Rubber Soul on ...

<boreo> permission to film a concert? <boreo> john: you may not be able to. Depends on how good security is :-) <boreo> mike: as long as the band is divided, no one be "allowed" <boreo> mike: I guess you got the two people who aren't against it :-)

<boreo> ticket prices? <boreo> mike: I don't know. unfortunately issues like that aren't our decisions.

<boreo> mike: need a copy of King's X show I met you at <boreo> Mike: YES!! Absolutely! I missed the first part becauyse of the OJ car chase <boreo> mike: we're trying to keep a $15 cap on all tickets. Our attempt at the Pearl Jam rebellion :-)

<boreo> what happened to Chris Collins <boreo> John: drank too much whiskey. <boreo> Mike: called JohnP out of the clear blue recently <boreo> I dont' think John knows what happened to him

<boreo> Q: any chance of touring Europe? <boreo> mike: we will absolutely tour again after US tour. Japan in January and Europe in Feb, Mar. <boreo> we're hoping for outdoor US dates in the US after that <boreo> they're so much fun

<boreo> q: how big is drum set <boreo> mike: new drum kit. I got 6 endorsements and I got greedy <boreo> it's pretty much a 360-degree kit

<boreo> q: stage setup? <boreo> mike: nothing set <boreo> mike: I think I know Jim Hacket. I think he used to take pictues of my wife's bamd

<boreo> q: ever record a Maiden song? <boreo> mike: maybe. who knows. <boreo> mike: if they ever did a IM tribute album we'd love to be involved.

<boreo> q: Napalm Death Fans? <boreo> john: not really. That evening, our tour manager told us we'd be filming footage for the record label. It's the cleanest shirt he had at the time <boreo> Mike: I'm a Napalm Death fan. I'll be seeing them Sunday night in New York

<boreo> q: favorite city to perfom? <boreo> mike: that's tough <boreo> there's so many <boreo> every night brings a whole new evening of excitement <boreo> we've always enjoyed the major cities <boreo> to pick one would be impossible

<boreo> q: solo album from JohnP <boreo> johnM: if the timing's right <boreo> mike: we've got too many obligations with DT and that's where we need to focus <boreo> that was part of the problem with Kev, not to rehash <boreo> mike: there's a good chance of a Kevin solo album :-)

<boreo> GETTING CLOSE TO WRAPPING UP. 5 MINUTES

<boreo> Q: Headbanger's Ball or Howard Stern <boreo> mike: it's possible for HB. HS would be great cause I'm a big fan <boreo> Record company: it's hard to give backstage passes for one, or everyone.

I don't think saying "LIE is gay" is any sort of rational critique. Judging a DT song on the first listen is not something you want to do. I know myself I did not think much of Lie when I first heard it, but it's currently my favorite song. DT may be just a bit more musically advanced than some of us, and they deserve more than a few listens. If I had stopped listening to I&W when I hated it, I'd be listening to grunge or something now.

Hey, thanks for posting that! Quite a calm-down for me after having to drive back in to work to take care of down equipment at 1:00 in the morning!

I'll be sure to pass it along to all my luckless friends who don't have net access.

    later on,

Agreed. I had to listen to it on my workstation for two weeks until I finally heard it on the radio (haven't heard it since !>(> I can say that I wasn't too impressed, but when I heard it on the radio, I loved it! DT definitely can put to shame all the hard-core (balls and chunk!) posers we've been hearing lately while still being most virtuostic.

For those of you who missed the conference on IRC with John Portnoy and John Myung, I have it captured. There are some slight readability problems with the capture, but I will have an edited copy available soon.

James Peele writes: <<< Someone please reassure me that the rest of the album is not sell-out metal garbage like LIE. Kevin Moore is smart...>>>

Uh, your 'smart' Kevin wrote the lyrics to that song. And, no, the rest of the album isn't like Lie but there are some very good metal AND prog moments that make this a great one.

last night during the IRC Dream Theater conference, Mike Portnoy and John Myung announced the following tour dates for their upcoming tour. These are as confirmed as Mike could get and said they're subject to change.

The tour starts October 20 and will run through the first or second week of December, ending up in the Los Angeles area. The opening group will be >> I Mother Earth <<. More dates will be announced soon, so keep an eye out here. In January, the band will go to Japan and in February and March they will be in Europe. They hope to do more dates in the US after that, depending on how album sales are.

I will be posting the entire conference from last night as soon as I clean it up (I was typing like MAD trying to keep up with those guys).

Hi everyone - I noticed that some tentative DT tour dates were posted to the IRC chat last night. Maybe someone who was smart enough to write them all down could send them to this list and post it to alt.rnr.metal.prog? Off the top of my head I think the first few shows were in Providence, Boston, New Haven, and Buffalo on 10/20, 10/21, 10/22, and 10/24 respectively. (This could be wrong, I'm going by memory, corrections are welcome, flames autorouted to /dev/null!)

And to all you Boston area ystejammers - maybe we should try to get together at some point before or at the concert so we can hang out and associate some faces with the net addresses? Hopefully I'll be at the RI, MA, and CT shows with my following of DT converts in tow. :) Send me mail with ideas and suggestions.

    Later,

    - Brent (panther@mit.edu)

Ok guys, i've calmed down a little and i'm starting to get used to Lie, but I still don't think this is a good DT song. I know this is an old thread, but I think back to when I first heard Pull Me Under and how blown away I was. Lie seems to lack a sense of conviction and I don't feel that the music and lyrics interact very well. Oh well, I'm sure other songs on Awake will reach me. (I hope!)... Jay Peele (INFERNO)
