Savatage's new release Handful of Rain has lots of Keys and is
powerful vocaly. It is difficult for me to say whether you should
pick it up. If you like powerful vocals, lots of Keys, guitar that
kicks ass when it wants to, and Drums to hold it all together, then
            pick it up.

I recently sent Mike Burstin a tape of Handfull of Rain and somestuff
from Edge of Thorns and Hall of the Mountain King. He says he will
propably pick up HOR when he picks up AWAKE.

Mike anything else to add!! More Sava coments.

Someone mentioned that the DT sticker was available in the RIP magazine that had Henry Rollins on the cover. Does anyone know what month's issue that is? The issue I saw yesterday was Septemebr and it didn't have Henry on the front.

What?? Ytsejam Tshirts are to serve as backstage passes. I'm the one who asked about gettin Ytsejammers backstage and I didn't really understand the response, but that would be awesome (and well deserved), but I don't have a shirt. We need any proof of Internet Ytsejam membership to be acceptable. Who's working on this. Please find out details and relay them quickly, because DT is here (in Pittsburgh) in a month. That doesn't give me much time. I need to meet the band. I think we all deserve it.

    Well William, I wouldn't full blown compare Savatage to Dream Theater but they do have some stuff in common! Jon Oliva, played the keyboards and piano to their songs (and earlier in their career was their lead vocalist), they are also very "lyric" oriented and have done an outstanding concept album called "Streets:a rock opera" (please correct me on the title anyone). If I had to reckomend any of their albums I would start with Gutter Ballet, Streets and Edge of Thorns! I hate comparisons but if you heard Armored Saint (Jon Bush on vocals) then you might get the idea of their sound! Check them out but I would hold off your money for the new DT instead of the new Savatage...just my oppinion! Take care Tony K :{)}

Well, I bought it and will give a review of it.

I bought it and had my portable CD player in my car. I also bought Roll the Bones, which I listened to the first 3 tracks of. When I hit a red light, I quickly changed them and started playing. First song, LIE! Noo!! I really didn't want to hear this, and I had doubts about the rest of the album (like many DT fans might have if they hear Lie.) However the second track was an improvement, but I found the third to be, well, interesting at best. However I really like it too! VERY lyrically powerful (esp right at the end when all 4 lyric tracks meet up) and lots of COOL keys. The instruemntal track is very nice too, with keys along the same lines. I really love the melodic keys and the ripping guitar put together, really cool. I think this'll hold me over (with RTB) until I get Awake. :)

    > >Never been much of a doubting Thomas >but nothing sucks like that last line (Who's Thomas?)

Thomas refers to one of the 12 apostles, moron. Thomas didn't believe Jesus had risen from the dead until Jesus actually confronted him. Hence, the quite well known expression (even with us non-religious types) "doubting Thomas"

    >You tell me 'bout your new album coming >but ain't progresive enough for me

You know, I don't think you've heard the whole album; I think you're talking about an album you haven't heard. This album can't be judged by one song, just like the last one couldn't. I heard "Another Day" on the radio a lot; that didn't seem much like progressive metal, but that didn't mean Metropolis wasn't also there.

    >But I'll sell out everyday >We scared all our fans away

There's a good one: you don't like it, haven't heard the rest of the album, and declared DT a sell-out. Good. Real good.

    >No keys, John's P. all alone

Uh, lesseee.... who can say "Six o'clock"? :^)

    >You want technicality? It's a bother. We say no!

You wanna talk uninformed dorks? These two are a bother.

Well, I could go on, but I fear I might be dignifying this shit that they spout...

I haven't heard Savatage's newest CD, but if it's like their older stuff, then I'd say they don't sound much like Dream Theater. Savatage has a much more standard metal sound. If their new album is different, though, I'd like to hear about it. If you want a band that sounds fairly close to DT, check out the Black Jester CD that I mentioned recently.

That's a silly remark. To me, the keyboard solos is what made DT much better than any metal band. But it's not just the keyboard solos- It's the drums, the bass, the guitar PLUS the keys. The balance is totally towards the guitar on AWAKE, and I miss the keys. I mean, if all I wanted to hear was guitar solos, I'd listen to Satriani :)

Coming In October- WRCN and East Coast (?) Records will present a special album release party with DREAM THEATER.

The club is The Roxy in Huntington, NY. I called for info today and there was no answer.

Handful of Rain is not as good as Edge of Thorns... Alex Skolnick has no balls... but he's jazzy and fusiony alright...

Hard to compare to Dream Theater... it's not quite as progressive, more classicaly oriented with a Queen copy tune (Chance)... Not a bad album though... I'll be there Oct. 24 at the Troubadour in Los Angeles...

I just got my copy of Awake today... Thanks Tim!!

6:00 is pretty cool, so is Caught in a Web, but I really like Innocence Faded. A Mind Beside Itself is kinda dissapointing. I thought Erotomania would've been better, but it really just wanders... Not like Ytse Jam. Voices kicks ass, but Silent Man is a little lame.

Side 2 (well, it's a tape).. Is easily the better half. The Mirror starts off with Puppies on Acid, the little song that intros Take the Time on the Tokyo video... Really cool!

Lie just fuckin' rules. Yopu have to hear the way The Mirror runs into Lie. It's amazing!

I think John Myung writes the 2nd best lyrics of the bunch (Kev is first)... So I like Lifting Shadows off a Dream a lot.

Scarred is also amazing... And what more cna be said of Space Dye Vest...

Anyway, it's a different DT. Not at all commercial, and really heavy and dark. But you'll like it.
