You know, you're right. However I've read many reviews of it.

This parody was done in good humor. I KNOW that the rest of Awake is much
more progressive. Most people say its even better than Images and Words.
However, last night my friend (Ricky) and I were talking on the phone and
he started making up funny lyrics for Lie because we were talking about
it and thought it might be funny to do a parody. I know DT hasn't sold
out. The parody was only for comical relief. Dream Theater is my favorite
    band.

The Majesty DEMOS are on CD but were done on a 4-track... so sound quality
is kinda... I would give it a low C... perhaps a C-... if you're an
    audiophile, I'd give it a D...

    > > Could someone tell me the quality of the Majesty demos and InstruMentals? > How do they sound? How good is the music? > > jeremy (jeremy@grove.ufl.edu) > >

    Well jeremy,

I have been listening to both the demos and InstruMental ever since I got them in the beginning of the semester. I feel that the demos are really well done for the type of recording equipment that was used in '86. The vocals can be described as mostly falsetto. So, if you can stand Chucky (Dominici), then Collins is not that much different. The lyrics are quite Dream Theaterish, as far as lyrical content goes. The theme is mostly centered around royalty and Majestic-type ideas. The quality, as far as volume goes, is as good as the master recording, which seems to have been a little low. But, the volume can be increased without any noticeable distortion. Again, the music is definative of the inception of Dream Theater.

The InstruMental CD is only music, mostly from When Dream and Day Unite. I enjoy hearing the instrumental versions of the first 'official' album because there was quite a jump or a style enhancement for Petrucci. This was obviously recorded some time later so the sound quality is a bit better than the demos. There is an awesome! piece on this CD that I wish was either an instrumental on the later albums or was used to write lyrics for. Cry for Freedom is just totally great. The instrumentation was so melodic and ethereal. I just get chills hearing the guitar and keys. There are some really good compositions on the end of it. A three part track that includes a drum solo by Portnoy himself. The tracks are:

Afterlife The Ones Who Help.. Ytse Jam Cry for Freedom Resurrection of Ernie [three part composition] I forget the name, sorry.

(first of all thanks to Tim Lodge for sending me the tape)

It only took one listen about three in the morning today to convince me.

What strikes me about Awake is how *coherent* it is. It is definitely much heavier than IAW. I can see why Kevin might have been stiffled. I like Innocence Faded (despite what some others have said). A Mind..., Caught in a Web and The Mirror are definitely the stand-outs on this album for me. Like the thread on a.m.r., I think The Mirror would make a good dance tune !>)> Lie is *not* gay. The intro from The Mirror and the solo/outro are awesome. After listening to the most of the album first, Lie fit perfectly. Better than IAW? I think it might be. The band seem more sure of themselves now in their songwriting. It's too bad that Mike and the two Johns (although the rythm section sounds *awesome* now) leave Kevin in the background. However, I do think that this album is more *compositional* sounding.

And I don't think The Silent Man is commercial sounding at all. It reminds me of the feeling that The Sphere gives you at the end of Hemispheres.

(I sure hope that I get my car system (in for repairs) back before Oct. 4!)

Space Dye Vest deserves its own section. Just hearing the small snippet of it on the Internet, I knew that this was a beautiful song. After hearing it last night (this was the only song I rewound), I think this is one of the best songs DT has ever composed. I am speechless. I normally think of myself as a cold, heartless bastard but this song is... is [...] (*sniff*) (I want this song played at my funeral)

Oh, yeah, I think the first dub part of SDV is from "Dangerous Liasons" (John Malkovich speaking to Michelle Pfeiffer, perhaps?). The part where they're talking about the heat and Houston, etc... somehow reminded me of City Slickers when I listened to it the third time (Billy Crystal and the metabolically challenged dude) but I'm probably wrong on this one.

With the more coherent sound, the better compositional sensibility, and the lack of any weak links (Lie might merely be a link, but it isn't a "weak" one), I must say that *Dream Theater has arrived*. (I can't wait to start reading the reviews.)

    later on,

    Zach

Well, I have only listened to the tape once (between listening to Awake and Gary Hoey's new CD (I just love that he has the Peanut's theme song on the CD :) I have not had much time to listen) but it does sound pretty cool... I don't really know if they can be compared to DT, but the CD sees pretty good... If you get the CD, definatly skip the first song for your first listen... It is pretty much the Lie of HOR, with the rest of the CD being alot less metal.

I don't think that it had been confirmed... I think that Jason just mentioned it (possibly even as a joke???) on IRC to get a reaction... BTW, the shirts are pretty cool... I wore my black one today, and have a 2nd grey one hanging in my closet.

Well, as someone already posted, you OBVIOUSLY have not heard the rest of Awake yet. You certainly can't judge a CD by one song, which you are trying to do. As mentioned, try judging I&W by Another Day and see where it leads you.

Well, everyone seems to have a different opinion about the various songs... While 6:00 is growing on me, I still think that it is my least favorite song from the CD. I also really love Erotomania.

I do like the way that they lead into each other. It really does add to the CD.

    > I think John Myung writes the 2nd best lyrics of the bunch (Kev is first)... > So I like Lifting Shadows off a Dream a lot. > > Scarred is also amazing... And what more cna be said of Space Dye Vest... >

That seems to be a general consensis (sp) I think that just about everyone likes Scarred, and can't even put into words the power of a song like SDV...

    > ------------------------------ > End of YTSEJAM Digest 520 > ************************* >

On a final note, I called for more info about the Boston area shows. The Berkelee (sp) show is still unconfirmed. After trying to call the Strand in Providence (which, of course, the number that TicketBastard gave me was for the Strand Theater in Boston, but that's besides the point) they said that tickets go on sale soon, and will be only $15.50 a piece. Af course, add TM charges to that.

The InstuMental CD sounds better. This is worth is just to have Cry For Freedom (I wish they had made this into a real song), Resurrection of Ernie and the guitar solos at the end. Given a choice, I'd say go with this one before the other.

Sure they are not perfect, but the demos sound up to par with just about every other demo i've ever heard. Why don't you quit wasting yours and everybody else's time with your opinionatedviews? DT decides to experiment with a different direction of music and you hop all over it and call them sellouts. The song contains every element that's in every other DT song (different textures, non-repetitive verse riffs, talented, tasteful soloing, screwed up rythm sections, etc.). Just because the song's in low B doesn't means it's heavy grunge, Metallica sellout crap. Personally the song did take a bit to grow on me, but now it's definately one of my favorite DT songs, I listen to it at least five times a day.

"Never been much of a doubting Thomas but nothing sucks like that last line (Who's Thomas?)"

Thomas was a character in the Bible that did not believe and had little faith. Much as you have little faith in DT being basically the only cool band that exists today.

I just was appealing for a little compassion. No one of any minority group (or majority group for that matter) likes to be debased. Here goes...you wanted opinions on Awake...so here's mine, These are my exact notes from the first listen...and will change more as I listen to the tape. Also, these are my exact thoughts as I was listening, so I was writing as I was listening...so thoughts progress as the song progresses. 6:00

Kinda choppy...the samples are kinda cheesy. You can actually hear the Bass...James might be able to sing this one Live! Keys are way too far back in the mix though. I love the fuion kind of sound that accompanies the first guitar solo! "Inside coming outside" part is cool...guitar has the exact same tone as the sample of "Lie" I got from the net. I lied...you can hear James struggling...won't be able to do it live (James).

    Caught In a Web

It seems like they're trying too hard to be different...Chorus is catchy. The 7-string is way too obvious, John P. needs to explore this thing a little more. I can see James Killing this one live also (take note on these...and when you see DT live, tell me I was wrong!) First solo is cool...once again thouhg, Where are the Keys... Whoa...there's some! But you can tell Kev's not the monster he was on I&W...he's holding back. Production is more like WDADU then I&W so far What's with the ending? Cheesy!

    Innocence Faded

Starts out cool...but then James comes in...Can you say "Commercialism?" Ones again, where's Kev? Orchestration in the background is cool...the "Ah ah" during the chorus has to go!!! James' diction sucks on this song ..he's gonna put in that extra grind into his voice during the live shows, thus killing the song. Guitar solo...can you say Steve Vai?

    Erotomania

I love this all ready!!! This is totally wacky! This song will definetly be a major highlight of the live shows. The Key's are totally amazing! (now at classical part) This is what I like about DT, they'll take a complex song, and turn it into anthem...then go to something crazy again. Sure nuff'...I knew they couldn't refuse. Now it's getting very Malmsteen-ish! John P.'s solo is intense...Now some thrash...this is good Bass solo is cool (Kinda Rush sounding).

    Voices

They ruined it!!! James is singing...Keys are cool once again... but I hate hearing James breathe into the mic. This is a lot more in his range though, so maybe he can do this one live...sounds kinda like "sweet sister Mary" by QR (mindcrime)...nope it died...won't be able to this part live (James)...He's screaming again, and you can't understand anything he says...the Sample is cool. Song has calmed down now (for a while)...anthem kind of thing again...and once again likable. John P. really needs a new tone...it's getting old...sounds more like Nuno Bettencourt than John Petrucci. Sounding like QR again after solo.

Silent Man Nope...this is cheesy! I can hear Gary Cherone in the background singing a mixture of More than Words, Whole Hearted, and Tragic Comic all at once. Background vocals are cool though, and this song would be really good if it was a piano instead of a guitar as the main instrument. Has a ton of potential, but needs help! Oh Yes...I just thought of who this sounds like, Kenny Loggins...definetly!!!

    A mind Beside Itself (Mirror)

PUP!!! I totally love it!!! Finally...this sounds like the DT I know!!! SDV!!! Awesome! My fav so far...perfection!

    (Lie)

Heard most of this already...and still like it!! James WILL be able to do this song live if he doesn't run out of breath. Petrucci is a complete Wild Man on this song!

    Lifting Shadows Off a Dream

Starts out sounding like "Vindaloo" sounds like something U2 would sing. This song is cool...in James' range...and cool Keys and orchestration I can see a lot of air play and a vid with this song. If released, beginning of guitar solo is likely to get cut off. This really sounds like U2!!! An excellent song...but Major comercialism with this one!

    Scarred

Starts out sounding like the theme to a detective story. This is gonna be an easy to come up with Tab for (look out GW and GfPM!). Keys and orchestration are once again killer...and once again, James will butcher this live! This is like ACOS kinda...complex to basic to Epic to classic. But unlike ACOS it's very tight and well structured...sounds very Malmsteen-ish (Fire and Ice album) but with DT's touch added. Again keys and guitars are very well done, and Mike stands out a little more in this one. Very typical I&W

    Space Dye Vest

Been waiting the hole album for this!!! Powerful beginning w/ just keys ...a true classical feel with this part (and only 40 seconds into it). I love the background noises during the verse! Whoa..guitars right after first samples hit hard! Second group of samples are brilliant, and very personal. This can't be James singing now! This is it!!! The most brilliant piece of work on the album! I have Major goose bumps now!!!

    Summary of Awake

First few songs are good, but will take time to enjoy, Everything after Silent Man is incredible with high points being The Mirrorm, Lifting Shadows Off a Dream, Scarred, and SDV. The guitar work is killer, but Petrucci needs to use a wider variety of sounds. Mike isn't as obvious in the mix as with I&W, and the rhythms are a lot weaker...less complex than I&W (which is a bad thing!), needs more odd meters! Myung is a lot more obvious and sounds excellent. James sounds really good, but will most likely not be able to do these songs live. Finally...I see why Kev left. The keys are no longer a major factor with this album, and always way back in the mix with the exception of SDV which is by far the best song on the album...DT has suffered a major loss with his departure, and noone will ever be able to match the emotion Kev put into the keys on every song. So all in all, it's a good album, but I wouldn't reccomend using it as a First Listen for your friends (or in other words, if they've never heard DT...let em' hear I&W first).

Now for your part!!! I'd like to see stuff like this from all of you when you get your copy...this way we can have some good threads going about speciffic parts of certain songs, and get more in depth about the music. Anyone who has already heard it, feel free to discuss/argue/ agree with my ideas...and once again...these are just first impressions, and will definetly change over time! Take care!

I was Just listening to Lifting Shadows off a Dream, and noticed that the dude who said you could probably find the melody to SDV in all the songs was totally right with this one! At the very beginning of the Guitar solo is the melody of SDV but it's drawn out to where it catches ya by sruprise...I'm gonna keep looking for it in everything else, and will keep ya posted! (it's also in Mirror at the end...but it's Way obvious there!). Later!

Also found it in The Silent Man. I have to disagree with Zack about Innocence...it's CHEESY!!! Way commercialized! But he's right with the rest...Eroto and Voices are a butt-load better then ten millionth time around (I lost count on how many times I've listened to the album...but I can stay with all the beats already!)...By the way, THANKS A TON OH YE OMNIPOTENT ONE TIM LODGE!!! You kids will love this...but jus' like I&W it takes some getting used to!
