Hense forth, and forever more (as my mom always said), Let it be written
that Innocence Faded is My LEAST favorite of this album...I'm totally
loving every second of every other song now (and I wrote down all that
other stuff just about 6 or seven hours ago!). This Definetly is an album
    that grows on you! Later!

Here's a question...am I totally stoopid, or is that not someone else
singing at the end of SDV? I swear that cannot possibly be James!!! Same
person is also singing backup on The Silent Man. Kinda sounds like
whoever has a slight either New York, or English accent (hard to tell
    when they're singing).

O.K. this is getting extremely annoying! I've heard all of AWAKE as you
all know...and agree that all of you who have doubts will be
releived...but come on...have a sense of humor! They were having

funny...and thought it even more funny to think of how bad they'll feel
after hearing all of the album...so please, lighten up, and drop
it...it's history now! Thanx fellow DT enthusiasts!

Yes, I agree. Demo is not a demo for sound-quality. We must estimate
them by the musical point of view. I got them few days ago, and I think
it's sound is not good at all, but it's excellent!

made and shipped off??? I ordered one, but haven't gotten mine yet..
Who do I talk to about getting this rectified?

Mike B. is sending me a copy of Awake so I can review the whole album. I can't wait! (Mike, you can put it in the mail - the blanks should be to you by Thur. at the latest as I mailed them Mon.) Sorry guys...

Well now, I am one of those people who had WD&DU at least two years before I&W came out. When I first heard I&W I did not like 'Surrounded' or 'Another Day'. Although I have grown to sort of like 'Another Day', I usually still skip 'Surrounded'. However, I actually like 'Surrounded' better than 'LIE'. I think 'Surrounded' has more balls and heaviness than 'LIE'. Just because a song has a chunky tuned down guitar does not make it heavy. "Lie" just has no conviction and is whimpy sounding to me. How can this song be called heavy? If I want heavy, I go straight to the source: Slayer, Godflesh, Coroner, Cynic, or Watchtower, or even the bands that influenced "Lie" such as Helmet or Pantera. "Lie" just is not heavy - it is watered down and lacks the conviction, urgency, and musical tension of every other DT song including the ballads.

The views expressed above are facts... I analyzed "Lie" statistically using SAS here on the UNF mainframe... :) Later, Jay Peele (INFERNO) 6556 Fern St. Green Cove Springs, FL 32043

    Hey Tim!!!

There you are again... heh... well, in all fairness to Tim's ratings, I'm looking at this from STRICTLY an audio point of view.. disregarding the source or type of recording... and I would have to say, yes... it is a demo... by and large A DEMO, not a record company produced DEMO but a DEMO in the rawest sense of the word...

But if I were you, I would definitely get a copy, cause the songs on it kick some serious arse...

It's a dimension of DT that you collectors wouldn't want to miss out on...

My two cents: The only problem I had with YOUR opinions here is your tasteful soloing remark. Let's be honest: yes Petrucci is fast and fluent, but just because he is doesn't necisarily mean that he has to play a fast section in every solo. Yes I DO have the whole album and it IS safe to say that in every one of his solos (maybe not Silent Man) have a blindingly fast section. As impressive as it is, I wouldn't necisarily call it "tasteful".

Yes, I noticed... cobras? Sounds like they're trying to act tough. They guy is a pretty good singer too! I was surprised after I heard his voice on the first track. A little heavy over all, however not that bad (and track three, as I keep mentioning, is REALLY cool, as is the instrumental.) My mom listened to it and about a minute after the heavy part she said, "These guys are actually pretty good musicians." It was funny, cause she won't even say that about Dream Theater. I keep trying to tell her that they're about the best I've heard (she REALLY hates Metropolis, its funny. I love to play it in the car while she's in the car.) That and a few other songs are about the only ones she's heard so I guess she needs to hear a few more songs (Another Day or Surrounded would work I think, although she said that Wait For Sleep sounds too sad. She'll probably hate SDV, I don't know, I don't have it yet, but we'll have to see.)

    > Well, as someone already posted, you OBVIOUSLY have not heard the rest > of Awake yet. You certainly can't judge a CD by one song, which you > are trying to do. As mentioned, try judging I&W by Another Day and > see where it leads you.

I'm not judging the whole CD from lie... I've told people before not to judge it by Lie, as one person on IRC said (on #p/g!) said that the "new DT" sounds like Ywngie and I told him that he should hear the rest of the CD before judging it. I'm SURE the whole entire CD, even Lie will really kick ass, its Dream Theater, it has to. The parody was done in good taste (I thought at least) and was purely for humor. My favorite line was the one about John P.'s hairy chin (which isn't derogatory at all.)

Refer to my message saying that Dream Theater is my FAVORITE band. I'm VERY picky about music, and with or with Lie, they will remain my favorite band. I like them even more than Rush (however just a little).

I didn't think that I'd recieve much flack from this... oh well. Just in good humor.

I'm confused now... didn't Kev write SDV AFTER Mirror? And if so, does he give credit for using some of the material in Mirror? Either way, don't you love repeat melodies on CDs? Another I've noticed is on the new Savatage CD. It uses that cool keyboard part in track 3 also the in the instrumental party and then I think they reuse the funky guitar riff right after the heavy part on track 3 someother times in the CD. Does DT do this at all on WDADU?

That may well have been your intention... I will give you the benefit of the doubt... but what we saw on screen was "Say, pal, would you mind not using that word here on the net!" :)

    > minority group (or majority group for that matter) likes to be debased. As > members of a DT list we should all be trying to be as positive and > progressive as possible, wouldn't you think. Or am I being too spiritual?

Progressive <> politically correct. The net is the last great place where we can say whatever we want, exactly as we want to say it, without the fear of people seeing you and thinking the worst of you. A lot of things may be said that the PC folks won't like, but then again, that's what these people REALLY FEEL, not what they've been programmed to say in real life in order to avoid confrontation. I'd rather have an honest argument with an ignorant, closed-minded, clearly intolerant bigot here on the net than a brainless PC cattle specimen over on campus who blindly recites the mantras of political correctness.

How does this relate to Dream Theater? Surrounded vs. Scarred. Think about it! :)

    Hello, Tim-

I was just wondering if you were still going to send me a copy of AWAKE. I sent out the money/tape 10 days ago. Did you receive them?? I have read 2 or 3 reviews of people who have gotten the tape from you. If there is a problem, let me know. Thanks.

Someone recently said that he might not be able to faithfully reproduce a lot of the songs live. I disagree. I think he sings most of the songs on this album much closer to his vocal 'style' live. Much rougher and throatier. Especially on "Lie". Maybye this was on purpose?..

Ooops, I think that was my question that got answered (?). I asked something like "Any chance of backstage passes for wearers of Ytsejam digest shirts? :)" (it was halfway a joke) and the response was "Record company: backstage passes for ytsejam shirts -- maybe later..."

Hello! Today I've ordered some limited Awake CDs. I've recieved your money and have ordered: N.Bradley / A.Lafferty / L.Price / T.Haanpaa / C.Sunarto / T.Altman W.Ng / S.Dobay / A.Kasper / S.Chew / KAI / T.Goebel / B.Polka L.Karlsson / A.Reinelt I've ordered extra 7 CDs of Awake, because some letters are on the way to me. I'll post a message on 3rd Oct again, and there will be all people's names who I order Awake for. When I recieve someone's money after this, I will mail them directry. But, please e-mail me again if your name isn't the list as above, however, you had already sent off your money. I think I know your names, but I want to check just to make it sure. Probably I'll be US on 20th Oct with my friend Tomiko. And hopefully We'll be every show on from 20th through 29th. If you find us at that time, please talk to me! I guess there are no Japanese girls without us, and it's so easy to find Japanese. :) I heard Space Dye Vest day before yesterday. It's so beautiful, painful, impressive and...beyond all description. (as Mike Barr wrote on digest 518. Mike, I feel same way as you!) SDV is last present from Kevin as a member of DT to us, I think. I wish he keep his sensibility on his new work so much. Thank you. *********************************************************************** * " If spirit's a sign, then it's only a matter of time. Ok, the reason everyone was so pissed off with the "parody" is the following:

    >a heavy metal fake >I'm so mainstream I can't breathe >I've sold out >though I'm weak like I can't believe >that I gotta sell out in a shadow of doubt

You post shit like this as a "joke", and don't anywhere mention that you did it as a joke. Actually, sounds to me like the people who wrote it only feel sorry cause they realize they don't have Awake, and yet are calling DT some of the worst names I've heard since the Metallica black album. Not cool.

Anyway, I think what deserves criticism is the decision to use Lie as the first single... who chose it?!? It certainly wasn't meant to stand by itself, but it's awesome if you start from the beginning of The Mirror.

As far as there not being enuff keys, well, I notice it's a lot like I&W in the sense that a lot of things I thought were guitar were really keys.

Hey, anyone know what that time sig is in Six O'Clock? you know... the one Rush shifts into during Natural Science? Except, when Rush did it, all attention goes to the time sig, whereas with DT, it almost seems as smooth & natural as 4/4! I also think that wah solo is JP's best wah work on the album...

I just finished listening to Awake... What can I say? It's right next to perfect. The best album ever recorded, and in a couple of weeks it'll also be the best album ever released. :) Oh, and thanks Tim, thanks a zillion for all your troubles (LitS is also great!).

Who said that "The Silent Man" is cheesy and shitty etc? I'll fly to strangle you. I only deen your address. It's an excellent song even though there is some obvious Extreme influence in it. I like it.

Does anyone else hear Don't Look Past Me in Voices? I mean the "Seen my diary on the news stand" part. Maybe I'm just paranoid.

Isn't there a bit of every other song in The Mirror? Could the ending part be a reflection of the album as a whole? Maybe I'm just paranoid. Mirror is a darn good song too, maybe my favorite off the album.. I dunno, all the songs are so different, and each and everyone are almost perfect in their own genre. This far the only thing I don't like is the chainsaw sounding guitar in Space Dye Vest.

Oh well, this has been a bit of a shock to me.. Too much good music in one package, I guess. It'll take some time to recover, but I think I'll survive. :)

Everyone is wondering if Awake will measure up to I&W. My question: will Awake measure up to When Dream and Day Unite? Am I alone in thinking it was the superior album? Sure I&W had some more polished and technical playing, but WDADU was better composed and had coherent, while still complex, songs.

IMO DT's second best song is Light Fuse and Get Away (LtL beats it because of the amazing stuff here...unfortunately lasting only for short amounts of the song and then vanishing into the void), simply because it is such a well written song.

If Awake combines the musicianship of I&W with the songwriting talent of WDADU, it may even be better than WDADU. Surpassing I&W will be a somewhat easier task.

Of course, this is harmed by the cheesy Another Day/Surrounded type songs which I hear are on Awake.

Just wanted to clear up the first sample from SDV.

    >You might want to add to the FAQ at some point where the long soundbite in >the middle of SDV comes from. I identified it quite awhile ago, actually, >since it's from one of my favorite movies. :) It goes "...he's the sort who >can't know anyone intimately, least of all a woman. He doesn't know what a >woman is. He wants you for a possession, something to look at like a >painting or an ivory box. Something to own and to display. He doesn't want >you to be real, or to think, or to live. He doesn't love you. But I love >you. I want you to have your own thoughts and ideas and feelings, even when >I hold you in my arms...it's our last chance." It's from the film _A Room >With A View_ and it's spoken by actor Julian Sands' character, George >Emerson. In the scene in which these words are spoken, he's trying to >convince the woman he loves, Lucy Honeychurch (played by Helena Bonham >Carter), who is engaged to be married to someone else, that she's making a >horrible mistake and that she truly belongs with him instead.

I got this from the same person who is taking the Kevin letters...
