I just got a three page email letter from Mike Portnoy this evening. Among
many other things, he passed on some news for me to print; I figured this
was as good a place as the fanzine. Which, BTW, issue 8 is being finished
as I write; if you're interested in a copy PLEASE email me <or post it here
if for some reason it bounces>

I also am having trade problems with Jeremy Haynes. We think one package got
lost in the mail, then he said he was sending it again, but I've gotten
nothing. This is supposed to be a 9 tape package, so I'm getting ripped bad.
We negotiated this deal before Christmas, and mine went out immediately. He
hasn't been responding to me lately either. Jeremy, if you're out there, your
credibility is on the line here pal.

I talked to a friend of mine tonight who is working on several projects
of his own...and mentioned something that some people might find
disturbing.
******* He _might_ have an audition with Tesla. *******
Now, you might ask, how did this happen?
Well, he plays in a cover band in NJ. A guy from a sound/light company
who has worked with Tesla (among others) did their sound. He was really
impressed with my friend's playing, and secretly ran a board tape of the
show, and gave it to the guys, who were impressed with Dan's playing.
Things are up in the air right now, but, suffice it to say that he told
me that the guy he might replace was fired. He didn't remember the guy's
name, but, apparently he'd been into rehab.
So, you can call that "unoffical offical" confirmation.
And, should he get the audition, I'll let you all know.
Believe me - I've played with this guy, and he's nothing short of incredible.
I don't say that too frequently. He's very frightening, and would make a
great replacement.
I'll let you all know about his demo, which should be available soon
(he's working on it as we speak).
Sorry about the usual lack of DT content, but, it seemed relevant to
other things...and it's cool to say i've actually played with someone who
might become famous. =)

As long as it's in late fall. I've been through Phoenix in July
and air-conditioning or no, it's still damn hot (this is an
understatement). The water at the rest stops was actually hot,
not lukewarm, or even a little warm; so hot our dogs actually
refused to drink it. I laugh when people here in the Bay Area
roll up the windows and turn on the air when it hits 80F. Then
they complain when it hits 90-95F. I used to live in the Valley---
100-110F is standard fare there.

Good story, that is...
Anyways, I went home for a couple of days during our spring
break. One day when I returned from a walk, my father asked
me what CD's I had brought home. He said that he had listened
to one and loved it! Well, it was DT's Live at the Marquee.
He then proceeded to crank it up to about 6 *out of 10* on the
volume. I couldn't help but smile, because I never thought
that I would sit in the kitchen and listen to DT with my
father.
BTW, he said that Metropolis was awesome!!

Yes they have. For one, i know it is on the Lords of Sound boot. They
cut out the middle part "Listening to the city......." probably because
it was an encore. And there is a mistake in the keyboard/guitar solo but
it's livable. Later.

Anyone have this yet? I saw it at a record show here last weekend and
can acquire it from the dealer (he's local). Is it worth it?
Similar question regarding the boot MAJESTIC HARMONIES. I have the
dealer's address -- is it worth $25?
I also saw CONSCIOUSLY UNREAL there, but the asking price was $58.
Ranjit can get it for me cheaper on the net. :)
BTW, Dream Theater was one of the most frequent requests on the PA at
that record show. I contributed a few, yea, but there were some
'collateral' requests from others, too. Wore my Ytsejam shirt and
got two comments. :)
P.S.: Those who diss Type O because "they're SOOO goth" have a slight
problem interpreting lyrics. To be honest, I'm so disappointed in THE
PROMISED LAND that for me, seeing Type O again with QR might make the
show worth it. Peter Steele was cordial to us at their last show
here, too -- when a band member thanks you for coming out and asks,
very seriously, if you enjoyed yourself, that gets a lot of points
from me.

Yes, I think so too! And I couldn't believe that the others would allow JP to tell them what to play!! They're all highly educated in their instruments! And replacing the other intrumentalists would change very much the sound of DT I think. Because when everyone brings in his own parts they all MAKE the sound of their music TOGETHER. Not to mention, that even the style of music would change if other musicians would join the band (wait for Dereks parts! They'll change the music and the sound I bet...)
Just my 2 cents.
Bernd.

I have been reading the lists for a while and finally decided to post something. I noticed that there were some Tourniquet fans and Steve Taylor fans on the list and I wanted to let you know that there is another one on here now. I am also a big Steve Vai fan and I think his new album is really good, (I play guitar afterall (sort of)). I am having problems finding the I&W book. The only place I have to look is Hastings, which has gotten really lame around here lately. I read somewhere, I can't remember where,( I think in one of the Fanzines) , but John P. was working on transcribing it and it would only be available to fan club members. I haven't gotten any fan club info back yet so if it is only available to members then I guess I know why I can't find it. Can someone please tell me if this is true? I am not really sure anymore. Also, I have noticed some really cool keyboard stuff in Metropolis Part 1 and on LtL. On Metropolis, at 1:28, there is some wierd modulation thing that freaked me out the first time I noticed it. And on Learning to Live, right after the vocal's, "I won't give up Till I've no more to give, No more to give", there is a really cool chord that (IMO) should have been mixed a little louder. I never heard it until I got the Live in Long Island cd. Does anyone think that the band was used to hearing more of these parts, (and probably others that I haven't noticed), when they played them live before recording I&W, that they left them that way when they played them at concerts after recording I&W. And if the band members were involved in the mixing process on the album, would those parts be more obvious? Maybe I'm just babbling on. I really just want to get something to post!

There was a Petrucci add before this one in the newest Guitar World. It was a ful a full page add for Ibanez guitars. I can't remember which issue it was however.

I have to agree with the guy who said that Petrucci was the driving music force behind DT. I also believe that without Petrucci their would be no DT. I think Petrucci writes most of the songs and then gives it to the other guyts and they fill in their parts. This is probably not true for Surrounded and definately not true for WFSand SDV. But I do believe Petrucci has the original ideas for all the other songs.

Hello everyone, it's Babs. I want to direct this quick note to Mike Bahr. I have spoken with DT's management regarding the convention in Long Island and still we are waiting for final confirmation. I have mentioned that there are people from the midwest on that are interested in getting together as well. I think that if we can get them to do it once, they will wanna keep doing something of this nature in the future. Just think perhaps they could do a mini-meet & great tour? Of course this is extremely premature, since I don't even know yet if they will come to the Long Island one yet. Basically, they (management) are waiting to hear from booking agents in reference to DT's summer tour. That's what is holding us up at the moment. I can honestly say, that when I do speak with management they are very receptive to all of this.
Hang in there everyone! -BABS

Hmmm.... I seem to remember hearing rumors elsewhere that they had let Tommy go due to 'outside habits' as well. To be perfectly honest with you if they are replcing Tommy, Im not that worried. Frank Hannon has always been the 'brains of the outfit' as far as guitar goes- Hannon being an absolutely *stunning* guitarist. While Tommy Skeoch is by no means a *bad* guitarist, I feel that he is limited (he's got a straight ahead blues-rock style.... and thats it), and that he may be holding back the band somewhat. Perhaps with the addition of someone new in the lineup they will pull themselves out of the rut they have dug themselves into with the latest album. Just .02 cents from a die-hard Tesla worshiper. :)

Every I&W show they did has it... I personally think that the best version is on Lost In The Sky... I just like how James sang that night... I also think that the version of Eve on there is also among the best... I love the haunting feeling of the quiet aud chants leading into it...

I id a trade with Jeremy some short time ago. It took forever, something like five months, but the tapes _did_ show...

I know at the show I went to in Kansas City last November or so, they played some stuff from Resevoir Dogs. I thought it was great because that's one of my all time favorite movies. Scott

Oh man, this is great. For those who don't know, Page/Plant allow taping and have a special taper section set up behind the sound board--the best sound in the house theoretically. To all you European 'jammers...please please have those DATs rolling.

To anyone with the I&W tab:
Have you the noticed the huge omission at the end of TTT? At the outro solo just before the big scalar-type run, they've left out a one bar run along with ONE HALF of the scalar run. Check out the tab in GFTPM if you want to compare. It's a huge mistake considering that I'd like the "real" tab for that scalar part. For now I've combined the two tab notations but that's annoying.

Hi James. Just want you to know you don't have to be embarrassed. I showed John your post and he was very flattered. John's a very nice person but he does not yet have a computer at home (he also is busy practising every day) so he cannot respond himself.
Sincerely,
Janine

Personally, I'd agree with you girlfriend. <g> No, that's not quite true. I don't _dislike_ JlaB's voice, it just doesn't do anything for me. I think he's very skillful, but, to me, his voice just has a generic hard rock sound, as if he were a white shirt with a blue stripe and block lettering reading "rock singer".
Funny things, opinions. Someone else said that they thought he was the most irreplaceable member, while I think he's the first one they could lose. (I don't count Derek, because he's new and still finding his way, so he gets a break. <g>)
I suppose with enough forced listening I could brainwash myself into liking his voice, but that seems too similar to learning to like being hit in the head with a 2x4... For now, his voice is the one part of DT that doesn't speak to my soul, and I'll just leave it at that... (A force-fed soul is not a pretty thing. <g>)

Just back to clarify what I said about the band members...
Someone asked what I meant when I said JM was not prolific. I meant what I said. Prolific means producing a lot. JM has only written 2 songs on albums. What I said about Petrucci I still stand by even though some may dispute. I believe everyone in the band writes their own parts, but as far as melody and overall direction, Petrucci is mostly responsible. I am almost certain he wrote most of the vocal line for Silent Man, for example.
About the "Air Magic" ad in Guitar World. Get a real camera so John's eyes don't turn sooo red. Also, what does it say on that jacket? I am personally starting to think GW sucks as far as lessons and transcriptions go. Although they did transcribe Erotomania and Eruption, theres also a bunch of stuff like Metallica, Green Day, and REM that anyone could play behind their back. I transcribed Green Day's "When I come Around" from memory without an instrument as an example to a friend of mine that thinks Green Day is progressive. Whatever. Enough angry stuff.
Someone asked about the GW article in the Prince issue about Dream Theater. If I get time I'll post the whole thing, but I'll summarize a little. Petrucci said that he practices in order to get done what he's trying to do at the time, not a specific thing everyday, he also said that recording was a good thing for young bands, to put something on tape and then find out how hard it will be to play live. Myung said he liked Miles Davis and Joe Satriani and was practicing out of Bach cello books, he also mentioned he was getting married and that Portnoy just got married. Then he told them his message to American youth was to eat their vegetables. JP broke down the soloe to the Mirror (which is actually part of Lie, Myung maybe said it wrong) etc. etc. etc.
Wouldn't it be cool if WDADU was recut and rereleased with James as the vocalist! I wonder how TLF is going to end on the new EP, it's almost always followed by an Instrumental live...

HELL YEAH!
Skid Row's new album "Subhuman Race" is Kick-ass. I would recomend the tracks, "Firesign", "Frozen" and "Beat Yourself Blind", what the hell, I recommend the whole Album. As for Sabastian Bach, He seems to be a personal friend of every cool band out there, I has seen credits of many bands thanking Bas. Somwhere I read something about Bas and DT hangin' out or something. Wouldn't you know it, when I need the info I can't find it. Oh well.
