    >>>>>>>Hi again.

Well I was just listening to the "Live at the Marquee"-CD this

morning and there came up a real simple question: I wonder if

James does the melodies of his parts on his own or if the band

tells him what to sing. I know the lyrics are done by the whole

band (or by the person who wrote the song) but how about the

    harmonies? Anyone knows?

I really don't think, that he COULDN'T do it because IMO he's a

great singer and the harmonies fit his voice perfectly. But there

are some real musicaly educated people in this band and I can't

believe that they don't "help" him a little bit ;)

Well, that's all for the moment.

    Bye.

    Bernd.

I think that I read somewhere maybe in Metal Edge, that James and John P. worked together on the vocal melodies for Awake. I have no idea about IAW. Is this corredct?

Well, I don't know how DT does it. I seem to remember the melodies in Metropolis being a bit different when Dominici sang them, if that means anything. The way we do it in my band is this: our singer sings stuff, and we all listen, and think about how it could be done better. Experiment with it some, and finally come up with something that sounds decent. So it starts with the lyrics and the rhythm ove which they're sung, then the singer interprets the stuff first, and from that framework we progress to the final version. It's really a band thing...My guess is DT does it in similar fashion, only because it seems to be the sensible way to do things...

Errr... actually it's completely non-DT related but Dave asked:

    > I heard a rumour that Tommy Skeoch has left Tesla - is this true ?

During the last Tesla tour Tommy was not performing with the band and his absence was explained as "due to a sickness". I heard he checked into a rehab. I don't know if he has left Tesla permanently, but I hope it's just temporary for him to get back on track again. Hope that helps.

I saw them in June (or July) of last year and the show consisted of Type O Negative, Kings X and headliners Motley Crue at Darien Lake Perfoming Arts Center, in Western New York. All three shows were good (especially liked Kings X for seeing them the first time). Although I had not heard TON before I must say there stage show was pretty good and the sound was good but they were only on for w20 min. P.S. To those that don't like TON, don't worry, they probably won't do more than 30 to 45 minutes. The lyrics are in the album. Not sure about the promo copy though. I have a regular cassette and they're all there. Unfortunately, they're not typed, they're in some sort of calligraphy, which makes reading them REALLY difficult... Actually, no - He handed me one. =)

    OTHER STUFF:

I was talking to this guy I have a class with, and was looking at the box labels he had done for video boots his friend makes/has/dupes/sells.

Well, anyway, I asked him about several bands, the first of which was, of course, DT.

Since SEPTA (our lovely mass transit system - yeah, right) is on strike, I offered him a ride home, also so I could look at the video collection.

I get into this guy's house, and there's SHELVES of videos. I mean, there must've been about 500+ tapes there! Pat (the aforementioned guy) starts looking for Dream Theater vids. He finds 3. I went through and wrote down all the songs that I recognized (there were 2 instrumentals I was iffy on).

I don't remember the dates of these shows, but, here's what I saw:

    1) L'Amore's, Brooklyn.

Audio was okay. Picture quality was decent, but, it was a still camera, shooting from the right side of the stage, across to the left. You could see everyone. Set seemed about average.

    2) Toronto Picture quality was PHENOMENAL. The camera work was actually half decent! Lots of Zooms/Pans, but, the guy stayed on top of shit. Sound quality? A bit thin, probably because he was shooting down at the stage, and was a considerable distance back. Despite this, they must've been LOUDER THAN HELL, because the sound distorted from time to time.

    How's this for a run-one-song-into-another:

    To Live Forever/Guitar Solo/Drum Solo/Status Seeker

    I nearly shit myself. =)

    3) Ack, I forget this one...somewhere in NYC. From what I remember, it looks like this is a video shot during the DoE show - though, I'm not sure. See if this helps.

    a) Eve - live with samples b) ACOS - James intros the song saying, "Get Comfortable!" They then went into "Wait For Sleep."

I didn't bring the whole set-list home, but, I remember it starting somewhere in the middle of "Surrounded."

Camera work? Eh, considering some bunghole was standing in front of the camera, there's some pretty decent close-ups of the band. The audio track was pretty damn good for a cam-corder.

I was kinda fast-forwarding through them...and, while watching the L'Amore's tape, I was also documenting an Extreme show from Baltimore, MD - I think it was on the III Sides Tour.

Anyway, I'm not advocating that you buy these tapes. Just thought I'd let you know about what I saw. Piracy is bad, but, fun. =)

    -Hairball

p.s. For anyone who has European format tapes you can't watch, please email me - he has a VCR that translates them all. Neat-o! =)

I read an article on DT in RIP magazine (I don't remember the date) that gives an explanation of sorts. Apparently, Napalm Death's lead vocalist, Barney Greenway, is a huge DT fan. Mike Portnoy met Napalm Death after one of their shows and not long after, Barney sent DT a bunch of his group's T-shirts. Evidently DT found out that they were shooting the 'Pull Me Under' video at the very last minute, and James (along with the rest of the band) simply wore whatever they happened to have on (in James' case, it was a Napalm Death shirt.) As John Petrucci put it, "It didn't matter, though, 'cause you couldn't really see anything. It was all just hair and strobes!" That's not exactly verbatim but it's pretty close. Hope this helps!

    Hi, Just a few notes:

    1) I managed to pick up the new Echolyn disc USED for $9. I turned in some old stuff to pay for it. I didn't really know what to expect because all of the opinions on Ytsejam seemed varied. I was quite impressed. The songs are very intelligently structured, with an obvious jazz background. The singer, IMHO, is incredible. I thought the disc was great and they deserve to be heard by more people. My closest description of Echolyn's music as relating with other bands goes as follows: Styx meeting Phish for a cocktail at club Yes. Well, there you have it.

    2) Oh...... nevermind.

    3) Sorry to dissapoint you guy, but we are not the band. You haven't reached them and neither have most of us. What you have done, though, is succesfully embarassed yourself amongst nearly 1,000 jammers. Welcome to the club!

    That's all for now. later.

Well, I can only speak for two of the members of DT, but here goes. I worked at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Kings Park, NY for 4 years. And in those four years, i got to know both Kevin and John P's parents. Kevin's parents attend mass on a weekly basis when they are in KP and the Petruccis are both Eucharistic Ministers. So, I would have to guess that they both have some sort of religious background :)

I have never actually seen the two of them there, but DT was already started when I started working there. The only occurrence I actually know of them being there is for John's wedding, which happened to be two weeks after I left for college after workinh there for 4 years (Yes, I was REALLY pissed :) Well, I think that's about it. Sorry for an incoherence, but my second wind has yet to hit and I am kinda tired :)

Just thought I'd mention that I picked up a CD of Queensryche's show at the Astoria Theatre <that indeed is how it's spelled!> in London 10/20/94. The total time is 77:48, so I guess that means Awake ISN'T the longest CD in existence! <oops. That qualifies as DT content. Oh well> It's pretty good for a band that hasn't played live in over two years - it sounds a bit distant, like whoever's taping it is waaaaaay in the back, and they had some technical problems during the set, so Geoff schmoozed with the audience for a few minutes. They played four tracks from Promised Land, three from Empire, five from Op:mc, one from Rage, one from the EP, and "Real World" - which I had never heard live before. As live shows go, I've heard better from them - but Queensryche is always impressive even on a "sort-of-mediocre" day. <G> And this is indeed authorized, unlike the DT bootleg CDs; Geoff was asking the audience to shout nice things because it was being taped and they <the band> would have to live with it for the rest of their lives.

One aside: is it me or does the vocalist for Tiamat sound rather like a gothic Elmer Fudd? <VBG>

Everyone has been talking about similarities in DT music since time began, but no one ever says anything about part of the acoustic guitar solo in LTL being the same as the vocal line "if you dream of the next world" in Metropolis part I. Also, LTL has something in it that sounds a LOT like Scarred. I can't finger just what it is, but I was dinking around on my keyboard the other day and started to play LTL and in the middle, I thought "That sounds just like Scarred!" I proceeded to forget what I was playing and couldn't reproduce it. So much for the scientific method. Can anyone else verify this?

I would like to know more personally about the members of DT from those of you who have met them. Here's what I know (or guess) about each:

    J. Petrucci - definitely the leading musical and lyricl force behind the band. Seems somewhat quiet (not very). No matter what the credits say, I suspect he's behind most of it. DT could not survive without him, although I feel the rest of the members could be replaced (not all at once though).

    J. Myung - quiet, withdrawn, yet possibly one of the most technically proficient members of DT. Brilliant lyricist, but not proficient. Most spiritual and religious member.

    M. Portnoy - enthusiastic, childlike, excited member. Worlds biggest DT fan. Almost like he's not a member of the band but just follows them around. Very emotional.

    J. La Brie - don't really know. Now he's becoming a spokesman for the band. I too wonder about that infamous Napalm Death T-shirt.

    D. Sherinan - don't know anything so lets go back to...

    K. Moore - a little quiet, very serious with music yet looser outside of a concert. Somewhat religious, but not really (he uses a bad word on LiT :)), butmaybe he is because everyone else says so.

I'd like to know more from you people that have met and spoken with them. Thanks.

Forgive me if I'm the only one on this list who doesn't get out much. 8-)

    -A long time lurker, Scott<<<

Sorry! Q-Zar is a laser tag game, where there are two teams of twenty or less and they shoot each other or shoot each other's headquarters for points. It's really cool, they have black lights, fog, etc. in a dark maze room, and they play dance music in the background. But, you usually forget the music because you're too busy shooting people! The length of each game is 15 minutes. Then everyone is ranked by points. The guy with the most points on each team is given the rank "Top Gun." So, if you have a Q-Zar in your area, you should definitely play. Although, I think they're only in or near the major cities, like LA, NYC, Toronto, London, etc. For the Long Islanders that are reading this, the Q-Zar I go to is in Carle Place (near Roosevelt Field Mall).

    1) I am TRULY shocked and disgusted that nobody has even THOUGHT about mentioning Faith No More's new CD _King For A Day, Fool For a Lifetime_. I got it last Tuesday, and I haven't been able to listen to ANYTHING else (i.e. Dream Theater). Well, maybe I've been listening to Kev's Demos (Thanks JennieBear!!) some, but for the most part, it's been nonstop Mike Patton screeching for almost a week. The sound is really interesting. Some songs sound exactly like old FNM with Jim Martin, but some like "The Gentle Art of Making Enemies" and "Star AD" sound frighteningly like Mr. Bungle. Not a big suprise since Trey S. (Scummy) is the guitarist for Bungle and played all the tracks on the album. Any comments? I think most everybody here would like a least some of the songs (LOTS of different styles) Also, I got _Inside Out_ and it kicks (especially Monument)! YOU guys on the list got me into them so a big THANKS to everyone!

    2) Awhile ago Mike Bahr said that Ska was making a comeback, but the bands he listed (I can't for the life of me remember who though) don't really strike me as ska music. I always thought of ska as Madness-type stuff. One or two of Mr. Bungle's songs "Carnival" and "Egg" sound like ska. Comments?

    3) Is Mike Bahr sick? I must have counted 10 digests without so much as a whisper from him. Weird.

    4) Oh dammit! Tommy Skeoch isn't REALLY leaving Tesla, is he?

    5) BIG flumping ditto on TON smokin' baloney pony. IN MY OPINION, the singer sounds like he'd been kicked HARD in the gut and then tried singing the song that's ALWAYS on the radio.

    6) I'll bet Frank is a big Nelson fan.

    Take it easy friends!

I was just looking through (and downloading) the images on one of the many web pages(it's a good one BTW), and noticed the cover for a double cd named "Lords of Sound." What is this cd? Judging by the songs on the cd, it sounds like something I would like to have. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

As for driving with DT, I'm from CA, so speed limits are not too much of a problem.

Frank - try to relax! "Anger kills!"

Voivod is amazing... "Nothingface" is a must have!!

For those of you who like the energy of Pantera and the musicianship of DT, check out a band called Coroner!

Here are the great albums from Coroner:

No More Color, Mental Vortex, and Grin!!

You folks also may want to check out Prong... Great band influenced by industrial and metal with a heavy Killing Joke influence (another great band).

INFERNO update: We just played 4 shows this weekend and it was a blast! Our new demo, 'Architect' is finally being duplicated and will be out soon. Our new stuff has certainly "progressed" if you know what I mean.

I am very disappointed in this group. When a person posts something disagreeable, immature, lame, stupid, or just plain ignorant, someone always follows up with a comment. People, could you knock this crap off? Do you feel that you have to comment on everything? Do you like to see you own name in print?

    Puh-lease.

I would also like to take this opportunity to really thank Mike Bahr for the SUBSONCIOUS CD. Dude, you are a true fan, and a good friend to the people on this list. Thanks.

    Take care,

    Erik

    Dear 'jammers,

back in 1993 I went to the so-called Aardschok-dag (Earthquake-day), a festival that was organised by a Dutch heavy-metal magazine. Dream Theater performed as headliners of the festival, and they played a very good set. They also played one song, that was, as they said it, an old song. I don't remember what the song was. Could anybody who saw the show maybe help me?? Secondly, are there any bootlegs known from this show?

Thanks, Machiel Machiel Maseland E-mail: M.H.H.Maseland@stud.far.ruu.nl.

This is in reference to Steve Z's note about how his girlfriend would yell at him for going to the ytse convention and how she hates Dream Theater. Let me tell you my story. Last year I dated a guy who absolutely hated them as well and he was totally miserable about it (his put-downs about them were so annoying). I was so happy the day he packed his bags for grad school it was unbelievable. It's o.k. to have musical differences, but don't settle for constant put-downs. Just my opinion, I didn't want you to feel like you were all alone Steve. Wanna know what his favorite put-down was - "Dream Theater try to be complicated on purpose to make it interesting because they really have no talent ...." Like I said before I'm so glad that he's at grad school in another state :) Take care and ignore her Steve. Hope to see you at the convention. -BABS\

I am looking for windows software to keep track of all my tapes, CD's and bootlegs. Has anyone run into anything decent to do that..?

E-mail me off the list if you have any suggestions.

    Later. Jason
