Just to let every one know , I went to a Tesla concert about a month ago
in Detroit at a club called the Ritz ( in Roseville) and the band was a
little late coming on , when they finally came on stage the singer
announced that Tommy Skeoch was fired ,well his real words were "If your
wondering why there's only one guitarist up here on stage tonight is
because we fired Tommy's fuckin ass for coming to the show fuckin wasted.
Fuckin asshole , we don't need him to kick some fuckin ass cause we're
gonna kick some tonight Detroit!!" , and did they ever.

    Sorry for no D.T content.

Good morning everyone, it's Babs. This is just my opinion on the little
conversations that have been going on about people (girlfriends, etc.)
    of ytsejammer's) who don't like Jame's voice. I can't quite understand
this? I find his voice quite enjoyable (maybe I am just biased because I
am just so intriqued by the man). A former boyfriend of mine was a guitarist
in a band and their lead singer would come out and just shake the fillings
out of your teeth he was that loud and precise (I personally couldn't stand
that - drove me absolutely nuts, set me on edge). Again, I just don't under-
stand what is not pleasurable about LaBrie's voice. Just my opinion.

Okay, THAT ad. Yeah, I've got in on my wall about five feet from my head
right now. That's the one where they purposely superimposed rolling clouds
over his face to blur everything. I didn't particularly like that effect,
but it's a neat ad. Did you catch the plate of spaghetti with tomato sauce
on the verrry edge of the picture? Anyway, on the recent Petrucci ad
(DiMarzio), there's a red "JR" emblem on the ends of his jacket sleeves.
So while I can't read/decipher the silver lettering (on the rest of the
jacket) to save my life, I'll definitely keeps my eyes open for that red
    emblem...

Michael Opstall: yes, those time signatures for WFS looked fine to me!

    Hi!

On this recent thread of which band members write the most I would have
to say that I do think Petrucci brings many ideas in, but I don't think
he's dominating (in a bad way). I also think than John Myung
contributes more than meets the eye. That is usually the way with
bass-players, the don't say or seem to do much but in fact many times
they're like the glue that keeps stuff together. Just look at the most
classic examples in hard rock: John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) did not
write all the songs for Zep, but he had a great impact nevertheless,
Roger Glover of Deep Purple, co-wrote, arranged and produced most of the
DP-stuff. There needs to be bass-players that keep the bands together
and prevents the solo-onanists (mainly guitarists) from destroying the
works, bassists seem to see the music as a whole with a good view of
what could and could not fit, while (some->most) guitar-players are
interested in showing-off. Don't get me wrong, I happen to like
'showing off' alot but music is supposed to be more than that.

In this way I see John Myung very much as a contributing factor, as well
as writing the two best lyrics (IMO), and co-writing generally. I seem
to remember that someone said that the person with the main-idea or a
person that feels very strongly about a song often get to write the
lyric. That's probably true: 1) Mike wrote the lyrics to 'The Mirror'
    - enthusiastic about the song, likes heavy stuff etc... 2) John Myung
wrote the lyrics to LTL and LSOAD - the main themes has to come from him,
the harmonics-thing at the beginning of LSOAD and the bass-riffs/figures
in LTL which is the most important parts for that song together with the
WFS-theme. 3) With this theory Kevin and John were the main
contributors since they wrote half the lyrics each, and maybe...that's
    really the case.

I do wish that when writing new stuff John Myung's talent will come
through more. With Awake it seemed initially to me as if John Petrucci
was completely taking over. When listening for a couple of hundred
times more I found that that wasn't really true, although I find
relatively more John P-writing on Awake. I like his writing, don't get
me wrong, but I'd like the music to be as multi-dimensional as
possible. With that in mind I hope that Derek's own style and hopefully
his writing will come through. Maybe on the EP we will find out.

Enough rambling...maybe all this about Myung is because I'm a
    bass-player myself (or trying to be!) but I don't wan't a JP-solo-band.
    (hmm...I actually wan't a JP solo-album but that's another story!)

Not sorry for the long post, wasting time and bandwith is my fave
    occupation :-D

I have a few things to say. First of all as far as Bas and DT hanging out
check out the Live in Japan Home Video and you may be pleasantly surprised.
Secondly this is for Babs. If the DT conv. is going to happen I want to
know what I have to do to attend. Whether or not I have to make
reservations or not and whatnot. I am currently attending school in the
Atlantic City area and myself and a friend of mine would definitly want to
attend. If you have the info for me e-mail me or reply to the digest with
    the info.

    Thanks,

I'll try and get them down on paper when I have time. Unfortunately, the
band's got several gigs coming up, so I'm a little busy at the mo. It'll
probably be a large post so I'll e-mail them to Dan. If there's enough
requests, I'll post them to the group. Let me know, people....

We're considering adding Another Day to our set-list. The bassist is also
learning Pull Me Under, so we'll cover that once he's done. Seeing as our
set-list already includes QRyche: Best I Can, Damaged, Someone Else?
and Rush: Red Sector A, I guess that'll make us a Rush/QR/DT cover band!

(Brief pause as Lazarus realises just how far the band's come since the
days of the old blues covers.... It's still a _long_ way until we're
anywhere near as good as DT though....:)

If anybody wants me to try and transcribe "Someone Else?", I'll give
it a shot (album version - not full band!)

David, do you have any transcriptions of SDV? I'll try and sort stuff

Nice to see I'm not the only person trying to achieve the impossible -

    Some random notes:

The guy composing the second part of his post as a poem...that was
very nice, continue doing that please!

    -------

Actually Sebastian Bach is featured in most long-play videos I've
seen, for ex. Metallica, DT, Pantera.... Somehow he's always behind the
scenes chatting with other bands etc. Probably a nice guy.

    -------

What do you really think about the older material?

I know that many people have heard the Majesty-stuff etc and said that
'it's cool' but how do you actually compare it to the real DT-stuff?
Ok, some of it is very 80-ish, neoclassical style which sounds a bit
dated but there's actually some very good stuff in there.

I'd rate Vital Star as one of my fave DT/Majesty-songs. A Vision is
also a favourite of mine. Actually I think Chris Collins is kind-of
cool, I like his voice although it's 80's-metal-yelling. He's got some
special feel to it. What do you think?

I haven't heard all of the audition-tapes but could someone who has
please describe the other vocalists. And also: who's singing "Don't look
    past me"? Not Charlie, eh?

    --------

    Thanks for any help!

    About wait for sleep:

You're right about the time sigs. (Sorry, I forgot your name.) The
progression is actually the same as LtL (from the bass solo to the end).
    I believe it's Em,C,G,D/F#. (but that's from memory, so . . . :) )

I'm also having a few trading difficulties. Someone tell me, what's the
correct trading procedure? I send stuff out as soon as the trade is
confirmed, then is the other party supposed to do the same? Or is
someone supposed to wait until the stuff arrives, and then mail the
other stuff? It seems like I've been waiting forever for soooo many
things! BTW, Jason Hartman is a really good guy to trade with -- he's
prompt, and he does these neat little cassette liners!

(Yes, this is basically a meaningless post, but I haven't posted in a
    while, so . . . )

I'm inclined to agree. I think if I see one more Nirvana song transcribed
in ANY guitar magazine I'll throw up! GW usually puts in one (two if
you're REALLY lucky) good song per issue. They have redeemed themselves
somewhat in past issues by transcribing DT's 'Pull Me Under,' 'Take The
Time,' 'Erotomania,' Rush's 'Spirit Of The Radio,' 'Stick It Out,' Yes'
'Clap' and various other progressive rock/metal songs. For the most part,
though, they print whatever is popular or trendy, which is rather sad.

Your friend might be thinking of progressive rock in the context of
alternative, college-radio rock (the bastardized usage of the term!) If
not, maybe exposure to 'Metropolis Pt 1' or 'Under A Glass Moon' will help
    him/her see the light!

    Hey all you guitar-magaizine-reading-Ytsejammers..

The reason Petrucci's eyes are red in the DiMarzio ad that everyone seems
to be talking about is not uncommon and most likely unintentional.

The red eyes is caused by the light of the flash being reflected off the
back of the retina, hence, the red color. It happens when there is less
ambient light in the surrounding area, and the flash is made to do most
    of the work.

Y'all can thank the behavior of light in photographs for the demonic look.

    Hello again.
    Long time, no see !

Some of you, including Trey have said :

    >I have to agree with the guy who said that Petrucci was the driving music
    >force behind DT. I also believe that without Petrucci their would be no DT.
    >I think Petrucci writes most of the songs and then gives it to the other
    >guyts and they fill in their parts. This is probably not true for Surrounded
    >and definately not true for WFSand SDV. But I do believe Petrucci has the
    >original ideas for all the other songs.

I agree basically, at least nowadays.
When I first got into DreamTheater I was sure that KevinMoore was the great
force of the band. In my opinion he and his wonderful keybords gave DT their
charisteristic style. He was the man that separated DT from other
    metal-bands. I, then, was a completely moran in prog.music.
Especially I loved the OnlyAMatterOfTime. Still do.

When Images&Words got out I think JPetrucci had taken a big step forward and
those two made a brilliant couple in music-making. They fit so well
together, and correlated wonderful. Of course JPortnoy's crazy drumming, and
JMyung's ( too hard to hear ) bassplaying and LaBrie did a great job too,
but the couldn't reach those hights without KM and JP.

The last year something has happened to KMoore. I don't really know what,
but Petrucci is alone in the front room.
Of course, as always, the singer gets a lot of publicity. The vocalist is
naturally the front man, probably because he is "expressing the messege".
This is the fact in every band (except Yngwie Malmsteen ) and that might be
the reason why LaBrie is placed in front. I hardly think he despite it. The
same goes to Portnoy ( love the "title" Biggest DT-fan ).

But as the conceptual DT-member I would definately go for John Petrucci. DT
    wouldn't be DT witout him.

This is directed to that "cool" asshole who calls himself Slick Doggy Shit or some shit like
that. What kind of shithead posts on the DREAM THEATER list with references to some high
quality lyrical genius rap asshole like Snoop Doggy Dog? I think you're the one, pal who should
get off this list. Also, I think its cool to say shit like 'oh I went to college too, so
therefore I'm cooler than you are, Frank' and to say that I suck just because you assholes don't
appreciate Type O. Dude, I was wondering if it was possible to like talk about Dream Theater on
the list here, instead of other non DT related shit that you assholes keep bringing up.

Oh and special thanks to the jerk who informed us of his coolness by listing the many shows he
has allegedly attended. I forget who it is but shut your mouth asshole, I really don't give a
shit. Were you there at the Japan show with me? I highly doubt it shithead.

By the way, please direct any responses to me directly, and don't waste fucking space on the
jammer board. Also, please note that this is a jammer board, so all you assholes who think you
guys are cool, just get the hell off, we don't need your pathetic shit.

    regarding the recent
    relatively large amount of
    writings on myung I find
I thought I would share a few observations
    if you don't mind
    too much

    one
    has anyone noticed how
    in several songs
    his bass line presages
    by several measures
    an upcoming main riff?
    in learning to live
    a change of seasons
    and just recently
    in metropolis part one
    I've noticed such work
    and let me tell you
    that gets me every time
    sweet

    I don't remember
    at the moment
    the times precise
    where this occurs
    but if any one
    feels some confusion
    I'll find out
    if you ask me nice
    just say the word

    two
    I say but this
I have never seen a bass player work so hard on stage

I got back from seeing Extreme last night in Denver, and ask this
question mainly to drummers on this list:

If you've seen Extreme on this tour, what did you think of the new
drummer? I think his name is Michael Mangrini. I thought he was
amazing, and did a great job with Paul Geary's below-average beats.
His solo was incredible, with amazing one handed roles, and
one-handed 16th notes (in No Respect; not a slow song!) Anybody who
has seen him or know of his playing, please e-mail me personally so
we can share opinions. Much thanks!

To who was wondering if they had the right time sigs for wiat for
slepp, they were correct. What was INCORRECT, however, was the key signature.
It is not in F Major, since there is an F#. Possibly in E melodic minor,
maybe G major. If I transcribe it anytime soon, i'll let you know - briaN

    Hi everyone,
I was wondering if there are any Paul Gilbert fans out there? Well,
before I waste a couple of days finding out if there are, I'm just going to
say what I am going to say anyway (hey, that rymes). Personally, I used to
be into Mr. Big, but then I got too frusterated that there were two
phenomonal musicians in the band that were constantly putting out, IMHO,
mediocre hard rock albums. So, I've pretty much gone away from Mr. Big.
But, a guy who lives by me played me a boot called "A Tribute to Hendrix"
last night that is from a 1991 German Jazz Festival. I don't know why Paul
Gilbert was there, but let me tell you, it blew me away!! I didn't know
that Gilbert was capable of pulling this off (the rest of Mr Big was not
there. He had two other musicians with him). And you wouldn't believe how
much he sounded like Hendrix when he sang!! Yes, you heard me correctly, he
sang too. It must be from a soulndboard because the sound is at
exceptional quality. Anyway, my question is, has ANYONE heard f this disc
and where to find it? I must have it!!! Please, help me!!!

    sorry, no DT

I like his voice, too... and I'm a straight dude (although
Geoff Tate does a little more for me in the vocal department).
I have a friend who's very "intrigued" by James. She was
very dissapointed when I told her he was taken. But I think
that she has a thing going with the drummer from Skid Row...
sometimes he calls her when they're on the road.

Hi, I'm new here. I've only been subscribing to the digest for about
2 weeks. It's been fun reading about the things I didn't know about the
    band.
Anyway, the reason I'm posting is in response to a man named Tim
stating something to the effect of JLaB's voice not doing anything for you.
I'm just a _little_ curious how it doesn't affect you at all. I honestly
could put him up with the likes of Pavorotti, Domingo, and Carreras. Though
the styles are VERY different, the talent is the same. A friend of mine and
I always manage to speed as we're driving along listening to "The Mirror."
At the same time, I'm singing the melody, and he's creating some crazy
harmonies. Next time you're listening to DT, think about how challenging it
is to hold a powerful E or F for 15 seconds. Then think about James's voice
    again. A new viewpoint?
Does anyone else out there sing? Please give me some input as to
your thoughts on JLaB's voice. Thanks.
