    Hey -
I just am pretty excited and wanted to tell some people that i
dont really know... i am going to Queensryche!!! my friend and QR
freak drew the number one ticket for the lottery and we got our 8
7th row center tickets. I am quite excited, and will have a hard
time waiting the 3.5 millions seconds to the may 19 show...

You know what i dont like? i dont like people who tell people
to get off the list. that seems so arrogant, there are a lot of
very different people on this list, that have different ideas of
what should be on this list: from the strict DT-content only to
the things like people talking about sound technical data stuff
and other bands that they like... i personally like the inclusion
of it all, and think that it would become dry if there was only
strict DT stuff. i also get annoyed at personal attacks. i mean,
a disagreement on something, no matter what it is, is fine, but
why get so mad at the people? i mean, if no one else likes my
favorite band, The 77s, it doesnt bother me. and if people wanna
say that they suck, thats their perogative, and its mine to respond
by saying that i love them, but i dont think that i should have the
right to personally attack that(those) person(people). we have
    different tastes. accept it.
Don't get me wrong, I love ytsejam, however you say it. I love
the fact that we are here because we love DT, but we don't have to
only discuss DT. we all know that we like them, so we can get really
in depth into what they do, and/or we can go off on weird tangents
about other bands and stuff like that. i love hearing about the
    people on the list...

I also dont like posts that go off on weird moralistic tangents and
dont make fun of themselves in the end :) (Yes, Anistasia, this is
ending soon) weird moralistic tangents can be interesting, but one must
realize that they can get boring, so i'm gonna quit now and go figure
out what classes i'm signing up for in 4 hours...

    Hi !

Last weekend my mother came to visit me, and since I've been talking a lot
about DT and ordered some tapes and stuff, she wanted to hear something. I
tried with SpaceDyeVest, and it was ok!. Then I tried aMBH. Guess she
wasn't that impressed because we started talking and doing other things.
I really didn't think she would go crazy about them, because she knows
    nothing about music.

What I meant by this post was:
Which DT-song is most typical for DT.
SDV is not, that for sure. Still it is one of their best.
Perhaps aCoS, but that one is 20 min and almost impossible to get people to
start listen to. Metropolis and Learning to Live are brilliant too, but
most DT-songs aren't in that way.
I guess I would go for PullMeUnder.
    What do you think ?

Of course I know it is an almost impossible task, and to catagorize a band
to one single song is petronising, but still.

If you like, we've got a new topic

Are posts supposed to be, uh, "short?" If this is so, why haven't you guys
lynched me yet?! I'll be the first to admit that my posts are looooong.
Okay, from now on, I'll keep 'em short. All I can say is "whoops!"

To Rob Weychert: Let me rephrase whatever it was I said. My FAVORITE
vocalists. Favorite. Not "best," just who I happen to like most. You may
notice that I did not mention Placido Domingo. FRANKly (pun intended) I
think his voice is very froggish, and not at all as clear or ringing as
Hose Carreras' or Luciano Pavarotti. So I don't put him in my list of
    "favorite" singers.

Now, about James LaBrie. He is one of my "favorites." Carreras, Pavarotti,
LaBrie, Ann Wilson, Sammy Hagar, etc. No, Hagar might not be as "able" or
"accomplished" as those others, but I really, really like him, so I throw
him in with other vocalists whom I really, really like. This whole
argument is like comparing Chet Atkins to Steve Vai. Technically, Steve
could kick Chet's ass, but Chet is still the best at what Chet does, and
no one else plays like him. Therefore, since I see how each of them are in
the top of their respective classes, I could call both Chet and Steve
"good" or "my favorite" knowing full well that they are not equal in the
overall spectrum of what they do.

SO, to recap: James LaBrie is, in my opinion, as good a vocalist in his
genre as, say, Luciano Pavarotti. They are both "favorites" of mine. And
to stray from the point, do you think Pavarotti could sing "Under A Glass
Moon" like LaBrie can? Personally, I don't think he could, because it's
not his vocal style. (ie not operatic enough) So does that make him any
less of a vocalist than LaBrie?

The only thing one can conclude from this is that YOUR definition of
progressive music is the use of non-standard time signatures. William
just mentioned three song that aren't Progressive (in his opinion),
but DO have these non-standard time signatures.
Actually you can discuss progressiveness forever, without ever
reaching a conclusion. I no longer cares if something is progressive
or not, it's just that people on "progressive" newsgroups for the most
part seem more intelligent than those on other newsgroup (a rule with
    ALOT of exceptions!!!).

Thats just my opinion. Whatever it's worth...

Black Jester: cool stuff, but not as "polished" as Dream Theater. They've
got serious talent, they just need to brush up on getting everything
tighter-sounding. Their vocalist also mumbles a lot...

Steve Vai: okay, that passage in question... The background music of the
talking part in "Answers" sounds somewhat like the part on "Sex &
Religion" just before "Down Deep Into The Pain." These two parts are not
the exact same thing, but they do sound similar.

Petrucci: "Summer Guitar Workshop video?" What is that?

LaBrie: This is mostly to William Wright. So you don't think I put LaBrie
up there with Carreras? Well, uh, I think I do. Now I'll do it again. I
put LaBrie up there with Carreras. Any more objections to what I think I
    think?

I have to disagree with the statement, "If James really was that good, he
wouldn't be singing rock music." Do you suppose that maybe, just maybe, if
James didn't want to sing opera, he wouldn't? Do you suppose that maybe he
actually WANTED to sing rock? Do you suppose that his personal tastes and
wants/likes dictate his actions and what direction he takes his singing?

As for cracking notes live, the guy runs around, man! You can't hit those
high notes when you're out of breath and screaming at the audience to
"make some noise, peopAAAAAALL!" Pavarotti stands in one place, and only
sings what he is supposed to sing. His voice is his life. He takes care of
it, and does not jump around while performing. James, from what I can
tell, does not take care of his voice or perform as one taking extreme
care of their voice should. He's not in opera, nor is Pavarotti in rock.
In the two shows I have seen, LaBrie stood in one place, and did not
"push" any of his notes higher than they are on the albums. Those two
performances were flawless. But most of the time, from what I hear, that
is not the case. He dances around, shouts at the audience, or sings
various notes much higher than on the albums. Ergo, his voice cracks.

And I never compared the two of them in the way you are saying. Or did my
last post never get through? Oh well. The phrase "I put Labrie up there
with" basically means I like whoever it is I'm relating James to, and in
my own opinion they are equally good because my own personal tastes
dictate them to be of equal pleasure towards my senses. And that's all I
    have to say about that.

    1) HI everybody, I need some help here. My friend and I got tickets for the Van
Halen tour here in Cleveland, and him being possibly the largest Van Halen fan
I've ever met (and Guitar player), he was going on about how Eddie is the
guitar "god". Well, he totally disbelieves anything that I have to say about
other guitarists being good at what they do, and will not listen to reason.
    So here's the deal:

I would like you guitarist-type (or other fans) people to help me find some
selections from WDADU, I&W, and AWAKE that will show him that there are other
guitarists out there worth considering "Great". I can hear things on the cds
that really impress me, but I don't know what is easy to play, and what is
hard and complicated. I know that if it sounds hard, that's not always the
case. I would really like to shut him up, and get him to stop dismissing
other great players as lowly peons in the shadow of Eddie.

    2) I got tickets to the Queensryche show, with TON. I personally am excited
about it, because I like both bands (truly, Queensryche was the band that got
me started listening to heavier music), and I just wanted to say that I agree,
it sems like an odd combination, but oh well. That's the way it goes.
Anybody out there who's seen the show, do you know if they play "The Killing
    Words" from _Rage For Order_??

    3) All right, this is the end. I just wnated to thank all you folks again for
the discussions of other bands. This may be the Dream Theater list, and many
people may think that discussion should only pertain to that topic, but I am
glad that bands like Fates come up. If not for these discussions, I would
never have bought any of their stuff. But now they are one of my favorite
bands. I just got _Awaken the Guardian_, and I love it. "Gaurdian" is truly
a moving song. And by the way, I don't think that John Arch is that bad (I
can hear the flamethrowers now!), but certainly he is not as good, IMHO, as
    Ray.

If you have a suggstion for OPERATION : RESPECT GUITARS, please respond to me
via e-mail. My address is dixonas@hiram.edu. Thanks a lot, let's show my
friend how ignorant he can be!

    Hello again,

I forgot what I last spoke about on here, it has been a while. <grin>

    Tim Lodge
    ---------
I know others have come to his defense and I will as well. He is a very
prompt and efficient trader. The fact that the recipient is in Italy
while Tim is in the USA could easily be the problem. Sending mail to
certain countries through the snail routes are risky and time consuming
    at best.

    Plugs/ Trading
    --------------
I like to thank you all for this award. Thanks for the trading plugs by
those I have delt with in the past. Since I have finished those
compilation tapes I offered to make for nothing, I am trading boots again
and I will also continue to make customized compilation tapes (mail me
for info) of Progressive songs or anything else I have collected that
    interests you.

My boots consist of Pink Floyd (25), Rush (25), Dream Theater (15),
Marillion (20), and lesser amounts of Queensryche, Yes, King Crimson,
Echolyn, and tori Amos. Mail me for a list.

In Progressive circles I have albums by King Crimson, Threshold, Black
Jester, Marillion, Kingston Wall, Orzic Tentacles, Magellan, Asgard,
Cynic, Fate's, Echolyn, and these my be of interest to readers.

    Progressive vs. "progressive"
    -----------------------------
I have to agree with those who made the difference between Progressive
and progressive. Progressive is a certain sound that is routed in the
1970's and late 1960's which in many cases began as progressive (ie
innovative, different, constantly changing). Lots of the early
Progressive groups have ceased to exist or have ceased to be progressive,
but they are still Progressive. ELP, Yes, Rush (we could argue about
them but unless the new album does something new and creative instead of
retro (Counterparts), or pop (Roll the Bones) they will fit this
grouping). There are also bands that are retro (ie Jadis, IQ, Arena)
that are dubbed Progressive, just because they use the sounds ie
instrumental devices of earlier bands (sometimes this is difficult not to
do) and don't do that much new stuff with them. Then there are retro
bands (ie Mastermind, Anglagard, Echolyn) that progress and are
    Progressive. Isn't this a fun topic.... <grin>

As to Green Day being progressive, the bill is out on that, if they put
out a new experimental punk album that differs from their first album
then they may be progressive, but not Progressive. Right now I would
categorize them as retro since the punk thing has been done before.

OK, this message is long enough,

    later,

    Mike

Yes... and many diehard progressive fands hate both Rush, and Rabin
(infested) Yes. They think they're too pop sounding. Same goes for Dream
Theater. They can't look past their few pop songs and figure out that
they DO have Progressive songs too. What you must remember is that some
(most) Progressive music is some WEIRD shit. REALLY REALLY WEIRD. And
well Metropolis is the WEIRDEST DTs ever gotten, and it still doesn't
touch some of the things King Crimson, Yes, or Mike Oldfield has done (or
most other Prog-bands.) The only way they'll ever include Rush or Dream
Theater as progressive if it sounds like the heavy metal Red-Era Crimson.

I've had a discussion about this with a guy who KNOWS what he's talking
about. He has 1400 progressive albums. I told him I think Dream Theater
is Progressive and he said well only a bit. He said that they have some
"proggy passages" (his words) and i said they have most than just "some."
but he vehemently argued that Dream Theater was MORE a metal band than a
Progressive band. And finally I agreed with him. They DO after all have
more-Metal fashioned songs than Progressive songs. These metal songs DO
contain "proggy passages" but really they are still more Metal than
Progressive. That is why I equate Dream Theater as "Semi-Progressive."
They can be when they want to, it's just they don't sometimes.

Well... there's a few Soundgarden songs I can think of, one which was a
mega-hit. Not that I like Soundgarden, I was just amazed when I heard one
of their songs in 5/4. But really just because a band uses 5/4 or 4/8
once in a while doesn't mean they're progressive. No where near it. Now
if Surrounded was in 17/16 or 13/4, I would say, Yeah it's
Semi-Progressive, because STILL I don't see any use of wild insturments,
any innovations in harmonic singing, any strange voice effects put on
James's voice, any 1 minute bird chirping solos :), or any TRUE change in
    style within that song.

A while back I posted a question asking why James colored his hair blonde and
everyone said it wasn't blonde. It may not be blonde but from the time his
IaW picture was taken and the release of the LiT video James did change his
hair color and I still want to know why? I thought that it might be because
everyone in the band had dark hair so this would add a little diversity.
    Does anyone know why????

Just to let Brian J. Wherry what I meant by Wait For Sleep being in
melodic minor, ascending there is a c# and d#, but if you know ANYTHING about
melodic minor, you will know that descending, there is a c natural and d
natural. This is also called E Aeolian. That is one of the possibilities of
the key of Wait For Sleep. Thank you.

Talk, in my opinion, is one of Yes's better CD's. It has many textural styles
and the musicianship is up to Yes's high standards. The instrumental on it
(even though it's less than two minutes, I think - it's part of another song)
kicks. Trevor Rabin sings quite a bit (I think he has a pretty good voice,
and it's just a wee bit easier to sing along with his parts than with Jon
Anderson's) and does the producing and a lot of the songwriting. _Talk_ is
way different from _Union_ in that it's not so uh, dark, I guess is a decent
description. It's not anywhere near as progressive as ABWH's disc, but it's
more progressive than say _90125_ or _Big Generator_. It's just a really good
    CD.

    Sorry about the non-DT stuff,

I have delt with Tim Lodge and other than being a little slow in sending out the discs I bought from him, he very professional and true to his word. I really was surprised at the Quality of the Majesty and Instrumental Demos I recieved from him. HE had people send referrances of his credibility from all over the country and he kept in touch with me when I had questions.

So that is my thoughts on the credibility of Tim Lodge. Take it for what it's worth. Later.

I nearly fell to the floor after reading an article posted by William about his definition of prog rock. Through his eyes, a song can only be progressive if the song is "complex." WHAT??? A time sig of 13/8 does not make a song prog. Give prog rock more credit, man! Don't you think that intense emotion and meaningful lyrics play a major role in prog. rock? DT is progressive, not "semi-prog" like you previously stated! Mike Portnoy, himself, has told us that it is not their intent to play complex- it just happens. Their intent is to relay their message, using whatever tools are necessary. Why is DT progressive? Because of their remarkable ability to relay emotion and meaning, musically, to the audience. It's not very musical to play perfect machine like songs all the time. Thats not prog music! Dream Theater's is because they have the musical talent to be able create emotion with almost any style: complex, heavy, soft, simple...

Just because you don't think Pull Me Under is written like Metroplois does not mean it's not progressive. Listen to the lyrics! Do you think DT would have gotten their message across in Another Day, Surrounded, or Silent Man if they added in a million meter changes and made them very difficult to play?

Dream Theater is progressive because they are musically advanced enough to be able to take advantages of many styles to add the element of emotion to their lyrics. When needed, DT is technical monsters (amazing!!) and other times DT uses simplicity to envoke the right emotion to the songs message! THATS PROGRESSIVE!
