You can add Gwar to that list... Sebastian Bach appears in Gwar's latest movie,
    "Skulhedface".

I finally gave in to temptation and bought Vai's new E.P., "Alien Love
Secrets", and I have to say, It's one of the best discs I've heard recently
(and I've heard quite a few, being the metal director at WMHD).

The coolest thing (at least for me) is his range of mimicked sounds... I mean,
the disc starts off with that part from crossroads where Jack Butler makes the
train talk, then later in that same song he does a horse's whinny, which sounds
incredibly real. Then there's the song that was mentioned by someone on the
list not to long ago, "Ya-Yo Gakk", which features his son (his _young_ son)
Julian on vocals; Julian and Steve do an echo sort of thing, where Julian will
sing a line and Steve will mimick what Julian just sang, and they'll go back
and forth. After this song is "Kill the Guy With the Ball", which opens with
what Vai calls "Venusian Vocals", which consist of his guitar, whammy bar,
whammy pedal, Eventide harmonizer, heavy EQ, his left foot, and other stuff
that I maybe forgot. But anyways, this sounds the most like a human voice that
I have ever heard a guitar sound....

I don't know... I am easily impressed by gutarists, so maybe I am completely
wrong when I say this, but I think this disc contains some of Steve's best
    guitar playing yet.

    Stephen

P.S. to anyone who has both "Passion and Warfare" and "Sex and Religion":

I just noticed while typing this and listening to P&W that the music on the
song "Answers" under where the guy is saying "I cannot be ungrateful for what I
have recieved from America..." sounds like a melody from somewhere on S&R...
    can anyone I.D. this?

I sing and really enjoy listening to James. He has one of the best, IMHO, "power" voices in prog. today. I like he and Geoff Tate (QR) about the same. What is great about these guys is that they can be singing the most beautiful melodies and right in the middle of it rip into a line that makes your hair stand on end! Hows this for a vocal power trio James Labrie, Geoff Tate, and Freddie Mercury (I know he's dead but I can think about it can't I?). ------------------------------------------------------------------ Time is precious, I've not a moment I can waste Each day I take from the future I add to my past "Horizons" - Divine Regale

    Hi everybody!

I just finished watching the pay per view show from Japan (I just got it today), and it's, well -- AWESOME!!! First some Japanese record executives present the boys (except Derek) with platinum Awake discs backstage. Then they show everyone in the auditorium (pretty big place) for a while. Then the lights go out . . . . WAKE UP! (it gives me chills every time!) They played (if I can remember correctly) PMU, 6:00, TtT, LSoaD, The Mirror, Lie, CiaW, Another Day, AMBI (is that the right abbreviation for it?), and Metropolis. Plus there were some extras like the new Mirror intro, a key solo, a JP solo, a JM birthday party, etc.. I'm gonna go watch it again! Sorry everyone, I don't have the equipment to dub for trades, but you can get a copy from this guy named Allan (he does a lot of video-related stuff). I'll post his email address in a little bit.

Whoever thought that Wait for Sleep is in *melodic* minor: What made you think that? There isn't a D# in the entire tune, or a C#, for that matter.

I'm listening to the new Steve Vai EP right now. Very impressive. (Typical Vai precision and cleanliness, plus some heavier stuff.)

I was going to respond to something else, but knowing my memory . . .

    Later 'jammers!

the music is very wdadu/yngwie-ish, very exciting and crisp and arty. progressive records international is the cheapest source, i lost there address though. but they're very slow and they dont even answer their phones and they're very annoying. its on the wmms label, cdeurope.com has the albums but terribly high prices.

You >can't mix them if they all have the same key sig. > > >Marc Respass >mer@sol.iii.net

actually, there are many other possibilities and you can mix modes! there is a style of modern music called Pandiatonic in which all the notes of a diatonic scale are considered to fit together and any combination is an acceptable chord...this kind of music is not in a particular key, it sounds more like a blending of different keys...it often sounds as if there are two or three tonics...i know this exists because ive studied in school and written several sounds using this concept...i personally believe that some alternative music (not Green Day ;) is pandiatonic...this is why i find it interesting...other possibilities for music include Polytonal in which you literally have some parts in one key and other parts in another key, and yet more parts in a third key, etc....another interesting concept by an author i read is pantonality... weird stuff...

i would agree that within the domains of pandiatonism, it is possible to have E minor with a B phrygian feel...perhaps most of the time the tonic sounds like E but often will breifly sound like B instead....however, it is my personal opinion that Wait For Sleep is in a minor key...i will take another listen though....

you wont find these concepts in freshman or possibly even sophmore music theory but the idea that something "has to be either G major or E minor" is too limited to describe the multitude of music which exists...

interesting thing: the piano opening of "Sun Orange, Small" on Kevin's demos sounds vaguely pandiatonic...for some real pandiatonic music, check out Gorecki's Symphony No.3 and John Rutter's Gloria, 2nd mov't...

I think a band that does progressive songs, whether they are all progressive or not,are still considered progressive bands.Look at Yes and Rush. These two bands have written their share of 'non-progressive' songs. Owner of a Lonely Heart? Closer to the Heart? Stick it Out? Especially over the past few years, these two bands have been writing more pop-oriented songs. But does that change the genre of the band? I don't think so. Either you are a prog band...or you're not. It's as simple as that. There is no 'Semi-Progressive' band, capitals or not. And as for Another Day, Surounded and The Silent Man not being progressive...How many -non-progressive' songs have a natural time signature of 5/4? How about time sigs of 5/8 5/8 5/8 4/8? Or the chord progressions in the bridge of The Silent Man? I could count them on my fingers. 0. Proving that even though these may be more 'pop-oriented', they are still progressive, and Dream Theater is a progressive band, not 'semi-progressive.' I hope that clears up a few thanks. Sorry for the length. Thank God baseball's back, eh? Go Kirby Puckett!!!! briaN M eichorN

I would just like to clarify what I said about Greenday the other day. I don't like the group whatsoever, I was just trying to proove that a band doesn't have to write every song in 16/9, and in a Lydian. Progressive bands write songs in all different forms, and I didnt' say that Greenday was progressive. Just trying to clarify what makes a band progressive. Thanks

    Paul Cashman: >heck, it was $20 I got mine for free from my Japanese penpal who was also _at_ the show. Of course, I also paid her $25 for the Japanese CD of Awake. :}

Eddie Ju: >does anyone know if Myung's of Korean or Chinese descent? More likely Vietnamese, given his last name - there's a general pattern between Oriental surnames and country of origin. You'd really have to ask him, though - that's just my guess.

Eric (esa2@cornell.edu) Peter Steele is 6'6", not 7'. Still pretty damn big, though. I wanted to see Type O Negative in Hampton, VA, in September but couldn't make it. I ended up in a flame war over on Prodigy with one hypocritical little shit who had only seen the video for "Christian Woman" and declaring that they were nothing but satanic bullshit, to which I respectfully objected, and he started in on me about how he doesn't want to hear about that satanic bullshit that makes fun of his religion and basically acting like he had a ten foot pole shoved up his ass. I will agree - if you ONLY like progressive, you won't like Type O. Very gothic, dark, mistakenly referred to as misogynistic, extremely sarcastic. I would recommend the Bloody Kisses digipak (with "Suspended In Dusk") as opposed to the original CD; the former is much better. IMO. <G> I don't have a problem with someone dissing DT or any of my other favorite bands - provided the person has adequate justification and discuss it without turning into an asshole about it. There is a MAJOR problem with sloppyjoe69 type people on the P* bulletin boards.

BTW, I'm switching to AOL next month, I'll post my new address soon as everything's settled. Jaime the Dragon

heh... I try to get all the drum parts, the vocals, and when there are no vocals, the multiple instruments! :) although I can't do drums, bass pedals, and vocals at the same time! Well... for one I don't know the bass pedal lines. > > Anyway, my opinion of James' voice is a civilian one, since I'm not > vocally trained and I've never sang in a performance-type situation. I, > like you, put LaBrie up there with Jose Carreras and Luciano Pavarotti.

I really don't think so...If James were as good as Pavarotti he wouldn't be singing rock. and we wouldn't be cracking the high notes live.

    > His voice not only sounds good (I mean the actual sound), but he's got the > most kickass vibrato and range in the business! (rock music that is) One > could call his voice "noteworthy." (pun intended)

I can think of many more original and better singers than James. For one, Geoff Tate. Most everyone is familar with him, and he is much much more natural sounding than James. James seems to force the high notes sometimes, Geoff doesn't seem too. Although I'm not a trained singer here either, so I really don't have any idea what I'l talking about.

But in terms of originality, I'd say Peter Gabriel gets the award. It's not just his great singing ability, it's his whole stage presence, and his use of different accents. He sort of tells a story while singing and he uses different voices if need be. Other great singers include Jon Anderson (he can go quite high. but from what I've heard of him, I can always match his pitch) Phil Collins (he WAS good at least) Ian Anderson (another really original singer) and the guys from Echolyn (all three of them. They really complement each other and are great at harmonizing.) I mean, James's studio work is great. But in terms of originality, range, and stage presence, he's beat by other people.

And either way, you can't really compare Pavarotti to LeBrie. they sing in totally different octaves most of the time.

Hmm... I've never timed to see how long I can hold out that part. I guess I'll try it right now! :) woah... only about 15 seconds. phew.... course I wasn't really warmed up.

    > notes near the end of "Learning To Live," a la "Whoah-ahh-HAAAAAAAAOW!" > Now if I could just find a vocal trainer and unlock the mystery of Natural > Vibrato...

I don't know... Vibrato just comes really easily to me. (I think. Actaully I don't really know. Maybe I SUCK at vibrato, I really don't have anything to compare it to and I don't know anyone who could judge it for me.)

Dream Theater PR: I think my husband is on the ultimate DT PR kick... Between Ytsejam and concert wear, we have many articles of Dream Theater clothing, but I still have to fight him for a t-shirt sometimes. <g>

Anyhow, the other day we were leaving the parking lot of Downtown Plaza, and the lot attendant sees my hubby's shirt. "Hey, where'd you get that?" he asks. Keith just grins and says, "A concert." Turns out the guy's a fan as well...

Keith's also campaigning for 93 Rock to play more Dream Theater. The station was doing a live remote from a local Tower store during a "beat the box office" event for Q'ryche tix... So, of course, he goes over to make a playlist suggestion (meanwhile, I'm in a sea of testosterone, holding our place in line). Personally, I've never heard anything other than "Pull Me Under," but the DJ claimed that they've played new DT stuff, but it wasn't welcomed the way PMU is! :( (Am I listening at the wrong hours or something?) I guess Keith convinced one of the guys to give "Awake" a chance and listen to it in its entirety before deciding to boot it out of the playlist...

Queensryche: Yay! I have tickets! We stood in line long enough to hear PL *two* times, but it was worth it to get them a day ahead of the general public...

Echolyn: While we were at Tower, of course we had to make a purchase. <g> We each picked a selection - mine was "As the World" by Echolyn. Is it just me, or do a couple of the songs sound like Danny Elfman? I thought that was odd, but, then, I've only listened to it once thus far. [Jeff, if you're reading this, please write to me! :) What's the deal on the tape?]

Jaime: Regarding the comment about Vanyel/Lackey: check the sig. If you're a fan, I'm surprised you didn't notice it before. <g>

I'm pretty sure that he's of Korean ancestry.

    >>> I just found a copy of the German version of "The Silent Man" CD single after months of searching high and low for any DT singles! For those unaware of it, it has two bonus tracks: "Take the Time" (demo version) and "Eve". The demo of Take the Time is almost note-for-note from the I&W version. However, this one sounds faster and heavier than the wimpy production you hear in the I&W version. It's a little rough at some spots but overall I like it better.<<<<

I got that one too! I like the "chorus" effect on Jame's (Kevin's) ;) voice. And also the RAW sound!! It's nice to have "Eve" too on CD with a studio version. I'm glad I found it. It was $9.99! I wish there would be more of these, but Beggars can't be choosers!! I also ordered **THE** Dance of Eternity....should be here soon!!!

    Thanks...

Well, I'm a Sacramentan, so Tesla news is sort of a big thing here... (For those of you who don't know, Tesla came out of Sacramento, California.)

I was listening to 93 Rock this week when I heard mention of the guy. They said he's back in the band after some "health problems" (although everyone's postulating that it was due to rehab). If this is incorrect news, then blame Laura Engle (the DJ). <g>
