differences), the solo bassist? if it wasnt 3.15am i'd call and find out,

That's just a project. JSS is a pretty busy guy; I believe he sings on 4 albums
that have been released this year; about one album ev'ry month...
One with AR Pell, one solo album, one with his band Talisman, and some live

This is in this months issue of 'The Guitar Magazine':

I would just like to give a thank you to all of you who have posted about
echolyn in the past on here... i just went out and purchased the CD
today and I must say that I am extremely impressed. For all of you out
there who have not purchased this CD..you should. It is a very fine
example of progressive music. It doesn't have the metal edge that Dream
Theater has, but nevertheless, is extremely good!

I believe it's on his first record, "Havin' A Bad Day." Can't

I actually went to see Dweezil on that tour. It was at a small
theater here in Philly (*where DT also played, but after they'd taken out
the seats*). Ahmet, his brother, was supposed to be singing, but, came
down with streph throat. (He came out later anyway)
Two funny things:
We (me and 3 friends) got 5th row seats, and made up these signs
that said, "NO, DUDE! DON'T SAY THAT!" Dweezil comes out on stage, and
starts to say something, and we stand up, holding up our signs. He looks
over and reads it. =) He continued with what he was going to say: "I am
the new member of New Kids on The Block." And they kicked into a ROUSING
version of "Earth." Poor Mike Keneally had to sing that song, while
playing guitar. Think about that for a second, if you know the song.
And, I also got up on stage and sang "Macho Man" during their
'70's medley. Over 100 snippets of '70's song riffs in one HUGE jam.
They were really cool. Got to hang out afterwards and talk to the
band - everyone did. They just put their instruments down, and walked off
the stage, into the audience.

Oh, and one other thing:
*DT played in Philly 3 times: Twice at the Chestnut Cabaret, and
once at the Theater Of The Living Arts (TLA). I don't have WWW access
anymore, but, when I did, I didn't notice the two Cabaret gigs on the
DT tour date list...or did i just miss them?
I wish I remembered the dates - I got on the guest list, so, I
never had a ticket...ah, being a college DJ had its perks. =) (Also got
to see them at the TLA for free too...and saw the Dixie Dregs for free!
Man, I miss those days...)

You still think Steve Walsh has a voice? I heard live at the whiskey and I
thought he sounded awful. I agree about the keyboards though. He could really
wail, yet he played very tastefully and didn't let it get overbearing.
Speaking of not having a voice anymore, did anyone hear Queensryche last night
on Rockline? I almost cried when they played "Someone Else" live in the
studio. Not because I was emotionally moved, but because Geoff sounded just as
God-awful as could be. He sounded like he was singing cold--no warm up, but I
know all those smokes aren't helping him. An appeal to all those singers out
there on the 'jam: I know cigarettes are considered part of the "Rock-n-Roll
Lifestyle," but please look ahead to the havok they will wreak on your voices!
Quit as soon as possible.

I thought that it would be rather interesting to find some songs of
Dream Theater's that could segue into another song of their own, or another
group's. For instance, I think that in Under a Glass Moon you could go into the
Aisle of Plenty part of Cinema Show by Genesis. I think that this would work
GREAT, both having the same 7/8 time sig, and the drum has the same basic feel.
I used to try to do this to songs in a band I was in, but was never any good at
it. Now I have the songs, but no band. Go figure. Anyhow, anybody got any
others that would fit?!?!? This could be useful to me someday. Just thought it
would be interesting to see....or hear...whatever...

Well, this isn't the same, but when we saw DT at the Pier 6 Concert pavilion in Baltimore, MD it was quite a listening experience. It was July 20th, 1993. Just about the end of the I&W tour. It had been raining on and off all day. On the way to the show it was torrential downpours. The Galactic Cowboys played a great set, and the weather held up for them, but just a Metropolis started, so did the rain...downpour...and the wind...20 mph...and the thunder definitely added a little something to the ambience. As Dick Vitale would say: IT WAS AWSOME, BABYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!

True. I saw them last summer w/o Phil and the new drummer was tight, but lacked the spontanaety that Phil added.

This is not necessarily true. I've seen them the last 3 summers, and they've played the original Song For America at all of them (yes, the version off their second album). They played Icarus... on the last tour. 3 years ago they opened with part of Magnum Opus (up thru Howlin' at the Moon). You can find this on Live at the Whiskey. 2 years ago they opened with about 5 minutes worth of The Death of Mother Nature Suite. This past year they opened up with all of the instrumental parts of Journey From Mariabronn all sandwiched togther in a cool way. Although I too would like to hear the full, uncut renditions of these songs, I don't think your typical audience would stomach them. However, they don't only pull out Dust, Carry, and Point. I've seen them perform On the Other Side and People of the Southwind from Monolith, which certainly weren't big hits. They've also played Child of Innocence, Cheyenne Anthem, and Lonely Street. You certainly should not skip a Kansas show, even if they aren't what they were in the 70's.

He wasn't a fundamental element of Kansas anyway. The best Kansas stuff happened between their self titled album, and Audio-Visions. Then Steve Walsh left. They haven't been nearly as good since.

It is done with a multi-tap delay and turning the guitar volumne on and off real quick (ala Cathedral). Hey guys! I just thought I'd throw in my $4.57 about Tori.
At first, like everybody else, I didn't like Under the Pink too well. But NOW, I like it much more than Little Earthquakes!
I know, you guys are probably saying, "Yeah, there's one in every crowd..", but just LISTEN to it. ESPECIALLY to the songs "Baker Baker" and "Spacedog" (probably my all time favorite Tori song). Some of the vocal melodies just give me chills humming them to myself. Let me know what y'all think...
Also, I was listening to Awake the other day (not unusual), but it just REALLY hit me that the solo on Scarred KICKS!!! I mean, I heard it for months and months, but I was sitting in design today and I was able to "hear" the solo note for note. Does anyone else agree with me??? Also, what are everyone's favorite solos from Awake?

I have been listening to WDADU off and on the last week and noticed something. Actually, first I thought that my speakers were going out (I just got them in February, nice pair of Infinity). Does the bass guitar on OAMOT sound like a fart? And not even well executed farting...
It just sounds like crap on my system. I'd appreciate any info out there, because I'm sure that my Infinity speakers aren't going out (maybe it's my ears...).
BTW, VanOpstall (sp?) mentioned something about great mixed albums, Deliverance's Stay Of Execution in particular. Stay... is awesome. I love it. Great stuff, right in between their speed metal to Queensryche-clones change. I especially like "Entombed," but that's cause I'm partial to their speed/ thrash stuff.

Over the weekend, my sis was home (the goth with maroon hair, if you recall). One of the things she had for me was a tape from an L.A. band called Squick. It's a prog rock trio influenced by Yes, Dream Theater, et al. It's just a single instrumental, but it's pretty good.
If you're close to the L.A. area and would like to check them out, they're performing at FM Station in North Hollywood (near Victory and Lankershim) on May 5th. It's a 21 and over show.

Hmm...this is an educated guess off the top of my head, but is it possible that it's a symbol used by the Australian aborigines? (I tried to see if I could find something in Bruce Chatwin's _The_Songlines_, but there's no glossary.) The Austrailan natives refer to the time of creation of the world as "dream time."
If you're wondering, I did study anthropology (cultural/social anthro being my main interest) in college. :)

So I'm walking through the supermarket and to my surprise they've set up display of music that they are selling. Most of it was Pointer Sisters and best of 50s jukebox compilations (not a flame, just what I observed. I happen to like 50s jukebox music). Low and behold, sitting there was Asia's "Aquia." I instantly thought back to when Asia was a hot topic of discussion of this list and bought it, marking it the first purchase I have made as a direct result of Ytsejam. Besides it was only $3.99. Anyway, I love it. My favortie tracks are "Lay Down Your Arms" and "Crime of the Heart." Most of all, I was very impressed with the singer. I always judge bands by the singer (funny for a drummer) and this guy really impressed me. I guess I was expecting some prog. band, but these guys were more hard rock (my specialty. Nothing against prog.). What other albums would you recommend by them?

I know this is a little late but I was away for the weekend. I am also waiting for a tape by him, but I'm not that worried. It was only a one-tape thing and I'm sure he's got more important things (and trades) to deal with. I've e-mailed him twice and got a response once. I know he posted on here saying that he just sent out tapes so I'm sure I can expect it anyday now (hint, hint). No malice intended.

I just got an internship with Atlantic Records over the summer in their publicity department. No pay, but I get college credit and and get to go to some industry showcases and stuff. The relevance here is that DT is on EastWest, which is a divison of Atlantic. I'll be more than happy to take some DT promo stuff off their hands if they offer (same with Skid Row), especially now that ACOS is on its way. Just thought I'd gloat.

Hey man. If you like AC/DC more power to you. Don't apologize for it! How about this. Remember that Bangles tape? The first one? I have that in my car and I was listening to it just last week! It's not too far from some Rush, Dream Theater (<- there's the DT content) and Jon Finn (and excellent guitarist from Boston who plays great instrumental rock. Not Fusak!). So don't be ashamed of who you like. BTW, I hate AC/DC and haven't heard anything, sorry.
