    > recommendations from people on list list a while back. After listening to
    > it about 4 times I must say that I LOVE this cd!!!! I thought i wouldn't

I like it as well, more than I thought I would. I am also
fortunate that it's considered "light enough" to put into the carousel CD
at work... so it joins other "light enough" CDs such as the Eve 3"er,
Live's Mental Jewely, Boston, and Led Zeppelin 4.

    > like to (too commertial!) But it isn't and I really love it! My favorite
    > songs so far are Silent All These Years, Precious Things (whats this
    > about anyway) and of course Winter! WINTER IS THE BEST!!! She's so

Winter is still my favourite of all her songs, though the others
appeal to me more and more every day... I'm right there with ya man.

Obligatory DT content: DT covered Winter at the 1/31/95 show. :)

If I had to rank them _today_, it would be:

    1. Winter
    2. Little Earthquakes (a vampire song! and with incredible vocals, and
on top of that, good lyrics! Triple play!)
    3. Happy Phantom (this gets the whole store hoppin' when it goes on)
    4. Precious Things
    5. Crucify
    6. Silent All These Years
    7. Me and a Gun
    8. China
    etc....

If I could include B-sides, Song For Eric would be # 3.5

    > doubting everyone's recommendation on this cd, it is excellent! Everyone
    > who doesn't have this CD should go buy it NOW!!!!

If nothing else, they should buy the Crucfy maxi CD single.
Winter is on it, along with amusing Nirvana and Led Zeppelin covers. Tori
is also on that Emnicrono thing, the Zep tribute that just came out.

    > Now please tell me, her other cds are just as good as this one! please
    > tell me so! should I buy her other CDs?

I didn't like Under the Pink as much, but it's happening.

Hairball: SHOOGAGOOGAGUNGA!! Just out of curiosity, can you tell me which
Dweezil album features his delayed turning-the-pickup-on-and-off-really-
    fast technique?

Yeah, I've wondered about those symbols on Kevin's keyboards myself...

So...can someone bring me up to date on what comes with the fanclub
packet? I mailed in a request to join a week ago, so I'm expecting the
"form" (the sheet you sign in jam-session sweat, or blood, whichever is
easier) in the mail anytime now to become an "official member."

One other question: where the heck has everyone gone off to? I guess some
transcended spinning years, while I'm stuck here as if time has
disappeared or something. Dangit, I HATE it when that happens!! :)

Hello, it's Babs! This is a quick message for Jaime (the last couple of
times I tried to send her direct e-mail, it kept bouncing back to me -
that's why I am using the digest to write her. SORRY!). I can't believe
that you live in Gates! My cousin Patty lives up on the Elmgrove Road,
next to Kodak. I'm always up there. Did you ever go check out Dream
Theater at 3D's? That used to be a pretty cool club next to the Gates Bowl.
As for the WGCC station, I had a couple of the guys show up at my office
one day (one of them transfered to Geneseo) and they surpised me with all
sorts of GCC keyrings, posters, etc. Their names where Ken Wheatin (he
did the Polkas from Hell and some of the Radio Piracy) and Bob (unfortunately
I can't remember his last name). It truly is a small world eh? I will try
to send you a couple messages to your Prodigy address to see if we can
continue contact through there. BTW, Did you see that they have re-opened
the Penny Arcade on Lake Avenue? I heard that they are trying to get some
really big names as well as continue supporting the local artists? Also,
Fitzgerald's on Mt. Hope has changed from a dance club to having bands play -
Ice Water Mansion played there last weekend. Take care. -BABS

So whats the word guys (+gals)? Is DT in the studio working
on the EP? Any word on when they are gonna start touring the US again?

Oh, yeah, I have another single for sale. Its the Qryche I am I deluxe
single. It has I am I, Real World, Dirty Lil Secret, and Someone Else?
(the full band version - awesome!). It comes with some color pictures
of the band as well as a 3D tri-ryche pic with 3D glass!! This is a brand
new, still sealed, import. Also, with this deal, you can pick one audio
tape from my bootlist at no extra charge.

I would like to get $20 or best offer for this. It includes packaging and
shipping in the US. Lemme know if you are interested.

Someone asked about keyboardists who play like guitarists...the one example that comes to my mind is Jan Hammer, Pre-Miami Vice days. =)

Personally, I think Steve Walsh is another of rock's keyboard greats, even if he barely touches them these days. That guy can wail...I personally thought Walsh would be a great replacement for Kev. He's a helluva musician/songwriter and he's still got a voice...though perhaps not quite what it used to be, it's still good. (Sorry, just M.O.)

Yeah, I know it's silly & a bit unrealistic, but, can you imagine that?

I dunno - my g/f informed me that Kansas was playing up in Allentown PA, but, I said I didn't want to go. Why?

    1) Phil Ehart's not on the road with them. 2) They won't play any of the stuff I really love. (i.e. The Pinnacle, Lamplight Symphony, Icarus-Bourne on Wings Of Steel, Journey From Mariabronn, Incommudro-Hymn To The Atman, Song For America-the original 10 minute version, Magnum Opus, etc...) 3) Steve Morse isn't there anymore (hasn't been for 5 years, but...)

However, if Kerry Livgren came back, I definitely would. Just wish they'd write material like they used to. "Wheels," the new track on the "box set" (which should've had at least one more CD in it) is alright, but, I know they're capable of more.

Anyway, I digress...did you find the DT content? =)

    Later, -Hairball

    >Now please tell me, her other cds are just as good as this one! please >tell me so! should I buy her other CDs? > Well, she has two albums: "Y Kant Tori Read" and "Under the Pink". The YKTR album is from the late '80s and is '80s pop rock (ie. totally unlike her newer albums, stay away from it for now). I think she must have made YKTR under the pressure of some music company, or else she just hadn't found her style yet. "Under the Pink", on the other hand, is her newest album. It is somewhat different than "Little Earthquakes" in that it is less acoustic and a bit more commercial. I did not like it nearly as well at first, but after listening to it more I realized that it was much better than I had thought. I still like "Little Earthquakes" better, but UTP is definitely worth trying. Also, she has a lot of really *great* B-sides. She has about the strongest collection of B-sides that I've heard from any artist. A few of them rival the best songs from "Little Earthquakes" (IMHO). I would recommend the US release of the CD-single "Winter" (which has 5 songs as opposed to 4 on the UK release (and the UK release is missing one of the best songs from the US release, "Upside Down")). My other favorite CD-single is the US release of "Cornflake Girl" which contains "Sister Janet" and "Honey" (both of which are among my favorite songs by her). I bought an unofficial 2-CD collection of hers containing basically all of her B-sides. It's excellent and a good way to get all of the B-sides in one place. :) Good luck, and let me know what you decide to get...

Try Jan Hammer's (Yes, the Miami Vice guy) early 70's work with John McLaughlin (Mahavishnu Orchestra). See why he's considered one of the pioneers of the use of the pitch bend wheel.

Howdy Jammers! I just ran across a review of _Awake_ that may have been posted before but it was one that I really liked so I'm gonna post it again. This is from the January 1995 issue of Modern Drummer Magazine. I apologize if this is a repost.

"Cynics might accuse Dream Theater of simply modernizing Rush. In truth, though, this is the record Rush wishes it could make today. Dream Theater blends virtuosity, compositional whimsy, and mainstream appeal without sacrificing any of those ingredients. Mike Portnoy set rock drumming on its ear in 1993 with _Images and Words_. Now he turns it around and slaps it silly. Again, Portnoy's chops and polyrhythmic muse are in full bloom. Gone, though, are the triggers that turned his snare into a machine gun. And as if to celebrate, Portnoy opens the new record with infectious, funky, and exciting drumming on _6:00_.

_Awake_, more aggressive and heavy than its predecessor, showcases Portnoy's flair for dynamics, particularly his timely use of splashes and high-end toms. And the drums sound so crisp and live throughout that you can visualize the performance. But Portnoy's genius--something that he shares with guitar-god Petrucci--is the ability to let his creativity run amok without letting it run roughshod over a song. And the listener is the ultimate beneficiary."

    --Matt Peiken Modern Drummer Magazine

By the way. For those who were wondering what issue of Modern Drummer contained the interview with Mr. Portnoy, it was August 1993. Order your back issues now! Later!

Now the first thing you're thinking is... "What the HELL is a Dream Theater fan doing asking about AC/DC???" Well, dammit, I like 'em! AC/DC's newer stuff like Thunderstruck and Big Gun were both really kickass, (Though of course, they can pump out a hell of a lot of crap while they're at it...)

So I'm just sayin' what've they been up to? Sure hope they haven't broken up. And yes, I realize that when it comes to technique, Angus lacks in 9 out of 10 categories, but still... I like 'em.

(Can you tell I have a small complex about this?)

    Wow!

Tonight was more of a Monday evening than I could ever hope for! After a very tiring day I decided to take a little DT outside under a looming oak. With a slight breeze caressing my body and a few shadows dancing across the lawn I relaxed for an hour of bliss. Listening to I&W has always played miracles through my mind, but taking it out of the tiny dorm and into the open air truly sets the mind free to fully experience such a sensational orchestration! As The Guys kicked into Metropolis, the silver teardrops began to fall from the blackened sky. The light rain seemed to fall in time to the music, letting up in the relaxed movements, and increasing tempo as the song progressed to higher and higher energy levels. By the time LtL started filling my ears, my body was soaked with rain, and my mind was soaked with DT! This was a truly envigorating experience!

Has anyone else had absolutely unbelievable listening experiences? If so please relay THE best way to listen to DT!

I'm now trying to come up with an inspiring situation for Awake. Hmmm, too bad there aren't any deserted ocean shores in this area.....

Interesting story... Keith was working at Dave & Busters one night last week and a guy comes up to him with 720 tokens and asks for a "Bag O'Gold" of game chips. You need 750 tokens to buy a Bag O'Gold, so Keith says "Sorry, you're a little bit short." Keith later finds out that the man was John Wayne Bobbit, the sudden hydraulic leper candidate himself. Anyway, made for good irony. -----------------------------------------

Here is a brief list of the orders that I have received, paid, and the CD numbers you will all be getting... if you are on this list, I have your order IN MY HAND and you are DONE, FINITO... all you need to do is kick back, relax, toss back a Kypler's, and wait for my CDs to come in the mail to me, and subsequently, to you. :) I _am_ keeping a copy of this list, in case future authenticity issues arise, you can be assured of the full _value_ of your Subconscious CD. Given the number of DT albums sold total, there is one Subconscious CD for every 11,700 Dream Theater fans. Not a bad ratio eh!! A quick note: you will notice I have set aside a few low numbers for Kaoru, and I have done this because most of the Japanese Ytsejammers will be doing a group order through her, and I wanted to get *some* of the low #'s to the land of the Rising Sun, tis only fair after all. :) That's the only orders that are not yet paid, because she still has to get the orders from the others. Any Nihon-jin Ytsejam members, email Kaoru-san if you want to get a copy of the CD! If more are reserved than space I set aside, I will fill another block of numbers somewhere in the 100's.

!!!!!!!!! Quick note!! If you "reserved" a copy with me, but have not yet sent in payment, you won't be in this list yet... DON'T PANIC! I've still got your reservation, and I _did_ say that because of the delay in the CDs getting to me in shipment (my blanks) that you could wait on payment if you wanted to. But, without seeming pushy, I'd remind you that now is a good time. :) !!!!!!!!!

If I messed up, TELL ME! I've proven to be far from perfect with these orders...

    2. What the hell IS Subconscious, and how can I get it?!?

Subconscious is a CD, a project I undertook simply because I thought maybe it should be done. It's totally privately financed, and I think with the number of reservations that have been made, I will come out of it with my head above water, for which I owe the trustworthy members of Ytsejam a bow of gratitude. :)

NOTICE: This CD, I found out, is grey-area legality, because: 1. It's for promotional purposes only, not for resale, and; 2. It's not for sale. What you're actually purchasing from me is psychic advice. I'm throwing a free CD in with every session. Notice all of my messages end with "Take care"? That's pretty good advice! :) 3. The cost only covers manufacturing and shipping. I barely make minimum wage. Maybe I should turn myself in to Immigration! :)

But seriously folks... as pertains to the issue of legality, I'm not trying to make myself out to be some sort of arrogant ass. I'm doing this project for the benefit of the Jam, and DT is overlooking it for now (maybe because they want their free copies? heheh)... I'm not making a killing doing it, and it's taking an awful lot of time to get done. I sincerely thank all of you Jammers who have had nothing but kind words for my efforts, and I implore those of you who might not think very highly of my project here, to please, give me the benefit of the doubt on this one. Friends? :)

What happened was, I felt it was time to release some of Dream Theater's rarer songs on CD, and thus I sought good copies from everywhere, including some that came from sources connected directly to the band! Thus, I think I can safely say that these are the best copies you can find outside of those in Portnoy's vault at home.

I bought a CD burner and rented equipment from a CD pressing plant nearby, so I could produce the discs. They will have printing on them and a liner cover. I had to order blanks and jewelcases in lots of 500 or more, though, and thus the risk was made: I emptied my bank account and placed the order. Fortunately, it seems I will make up the difference with CD sales.

The blanks made it and I'm underway filling the orders. The price is $25.00 US per disc. It was originally going to be $27.50, but the CD place had a good price on blanks. Its true, as one Jammer pointed out, that I could have kept the higher price and said nothing about the blanks being cheaper than before... and nobody would have known. I did it in hopes of furthering the fans-for-fans attitude that has (thankfully) already spread throughout the net, and which I am aiding as best I can with this CD project.

The CD pressing plant I got all my materials from previewed my current master, and decided it just wouldn't do. Without charging me a penny more for another glass master, they agreed to take on the job of fully digitally remastering the disc! They gave me a great rate on the studio time too.

So now it's done! The disc has been totally redone in Dolby Digital Surround Sound, compatible with any CD player but MUCH MUCH better than before, and compatible with Pro-Logic systems for full instrument separation on most tracks. The studio used the certified THX transfer guidelines to make sure everything would be as good as possible on the disc. Since I was not using the original master tapes, it couldn't be certified as a THX release.. too bad, that would have been pretty funny! :) Again, it's not a THX disc, but they used the good stuff to make it. The remastering involved a thorough noise cleanup and proper re-phasing of the instruments for surround.

Every track stands out so much better, Eve and Change of Seasons are _better than they were on TDOE_, and songs that I was hoping would sound better, such as Don't Look Past Me and Mission Impossible, now have nary a fuzz or distortion spot. It's so clean, it's the way CD was meant to be. I was confident before that this disc would satisfy the DT collector that _had_ to have it all... now I am confident that if you like DT at all and are familiar with the usual sound of their older boots.. it will BLOW YOU AWAY. :)

The tracks that were the worst originally; Wanted Dead Or Alive, Tears, Winter, and The Gorilla Session, were improved tremendously. WDOA is now on par with the best, Tears and Winter are downright tolerable (if you'd only heard the HISS...) and Gorilla... well... we tried. :) It's okay, for a recording that was horribly done to begin with.

    Here's the still-final tracklist:

    1. Eve (live w/samples) 2. A Change of Season (live) 3. O Holy Night 4. Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight 5. Don't Look Past Me 6. Wanted Dead or Alive 7. To Live Forever (acoustic version) 8. The Gorilla Session 9. Mission: Impossible 10. The Back Pain Jam (RPM Warehouse) 11. Awake Heavy Jam 12. Experimental 13. Tears 14. Winter

In some cases, the rawness of the original recording will be evident, but at least you know you're hearing it the best way it can possibly be reproduced. Subconscious is _the_ DT event of early 1995! :)

Here's how to order: (or how to pay for your reserved discs)

    1. Please use a money order. It's simply the best way, and they cost twenty to forty cents. Make it out to me for $25.00 per disc that you want (limit 5 to a person) and I am paying the shipping cost. Each CD will be mailed in a cushioned mailer so it won't get damaged. Please make out the money order to me, Michael Bahr, not to Feel The Rush or anything like that, since this is really just my own personal endeavor.

I accepted checks for the Rush Video Montage, but a few bounced, and I was left holding the bag. I've put too much money into this, and can't afford to be stuck with bad checks, even though I trust 99% of you Ytsejam members. Plus, best of all, a money order can be traced by you, traced by me, and you know for a _fact_ that you will either get a CD, a refund, or I will get thrown in the slammer! :)

    2. International customers, I know international money orders are expensive. If there is another way you wish to pay (wire, transfer, or other) let me know and if I can do it, we'll do it. So far just sending cash has been 100% successful, so I guess there's no real harm in it. If you choose to send cash, send it in a thick envelope so it is less risky. For orders of more than one disc, it is economical and safe to use a traveler's cheque.

    3. Please allow 2-4 weeks for delivery. By now, you know why. :)

    4. I finagled myself a bigger mailbox at my apartment complex, so in order to keep the orders moving fast, send it to me at the new address. It is:

Michael Bahr 3175 N. Price Rd. #1066 Chandler, AZ 85224

That's my real address, not a PO Box... so don't worry, I'm not planning on fleeing the country any time soon.

If you happen to live in the Phoenix area feel free to page me at 602-232-6647. Besides all the CD stuff, I'm always up for lunch 'n' trading with local Jammers.

    5. Send in your order: . Your NAME . The ADDRESS for me to SEND your CD(s) to . The NUMBER of CDs you're asking for . The money order, made out for $25, $50, $75, whatever . your EMAIL address, in case I need to contact you (emerg.)

    . (OPTIONAL) your home phone.

I won't require home phone because I want you to all feel safe that I am not selling mailing lists. :) If you _do_ include it, I will use it in case of emergency (maybe the mailman spills coffee on your order and I can't read your address or something).

    3. Original press masters...

The gold disc is sold. The glass master, I didn't get to keep. That was sort of a sore point for me, since I paid for it, but the plant says they just re-use them anyway. Ah well.

    4. Epilogue

I am at garion@indirect.com and will remain there until the end of time, so please mail me if you are confused, need information, are angry, sad, lonely, maybe even a little whimsical, and need to get in touch with me. Thank you ALL for showing such solidarity that a 21-year-old college student emptied his bank account to order tons of plastic! :) You are truly, one and all, ladies and gentlemen, the best fans Dream Theater could hope for.

    Take care of yourselves, everybody...

-Mike Bahr, garion@indirect.com, humble DT discog editor, anime' collector, videogame player, CD presser, bass player, guitar player, backup vocalist, beer drinker, college stoodent, and secretly, vampire by night. :)
