I can't remember who wrote this the other day but the Pier 6 show at the
end of the I&W tour in Balitmore had to be the best atmosphere to see at
DT show. I mean it was amazing, the rain just was pouring down [luckly I
was under a canope (sp.) ] the wind was gusting too about 40 miles an
hour, and DT just stood on stage laughing and went right ahead and jumped
right into Metropolis. I don't think you can get any better of an
atmosphere as the one the couple of hundred did who witnessed that show, the
place was just jumping. If the guy who was at that show can remember the
exact set list I would be more than happy to see it (this was shortly
after I had gotten into the band, and knew basicly no old stuff i.e.
    anything from WDADU).

One more comment. I would like to thank Mike Bahr in a more thna
formally setting through the Jam for the huge task he overtook in the
SUBCOUNIOUS (sp.) output. I can't wait to get my copy. Tears!!!!!!!!

beginning of the _Awake_ tour, but soon after they dropped it from the
set. Why? I saw them at Hammerjacks in Baltimore, and they played it, I

DT was in the recording studio yesterday and their management told me that they have given messages to the band to get back with them at the beginning of next week to discuss the convention. That's all the news for now. Use your mental telepathy to make them say YES! -BABS

Ack! I just received the latest Ytsejam today, and I must apologize. :{ Sorry!

Usually, when I mail something, it only takes a about a day to see it pop up in the 'Jam, so when I mailed something on Sunday (maybe it was Saturday...), and it still wasn't around late Tuesday, I thought it was lost (as has happened before) and never to be found again. [Rob: I do remember your mentioning the same type of problem...] So, I am *not* senile. <g>

Other stuff: I hope my "Subconscious" CD arrives soon - I must say I'm jealous of that guy who says he has it already. :(

That's basically my assessment as well. I really wish they _would_ have done some development on the two thematic elements, but alas, no. I forgot about the modulating to dominant. Thanks for setting me straight.

I would really love to hear them do a piece w/ a true classical structure. Like: "Petrucci's Symphony No. 1 in F#m Op. 5" That would be most impressive. Of course, DT without James is like cocoa without marshmallows--it's still just what you need, yet something's missing. Maybe he could just wail like a banshee in the final movement. It worked for Beethoven. :P

Since I've just now gotten a handle on that tricky guitar/keyboard line in the middle of TtT (after about two years of practice), I decided to tackle the brilliant finale to Innocence Faded on guitar.

There are a few licks that you have to knuckle down for and the part (played twice) where it goes down to D is very slippery, but the thing I was licking my chops for was that last time through (starting at 5:25) where its straight 16th notes with wide interval leaps all over the place. Pretty damn difficult but something to keep me busy for a while. I haven't seen any tab for this at any of the ftp sites so I tabbed out the last part in ASCII. I'll mail it to anyone who wants it.

Funny, but I didn't notice until a couple days ago that the main riff of the finale is foreshadowed under the line "Beginnings get complicated..." I always thought the ending just came out of nowhere like they said 'Hey, wouldn't it be cool if we stuck this kick-ass instrumental section on the end of the song'.

Just some miscellaneous comments, some DT-content, some not...

First, I'll de-lurk to respond to a fellow de-lurker that asked for recommendations on what Rush album to buy as a first album. Be warned that this is an impossible question to answer; you'll get over 20 different answers depending on who you ask (that's about how many albums they have, maybe a few more). If you want to hear a heavier, more guitar-oriented sound, go for 2112, or other albums from the '70's. Neil Peart was also on a real mind-trip when it came to writing lyrics during this time, too, so if you like fantasy/sci-fi-based epics then you'll like their early stuff. Once you get into the early 80's and into Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures, then the songs start getting more normal, but very good nonetheless (and in a lot of cases better...many consider Moving Pictures to be the definitive Rush album). Their work from the mid-80's is very keyboard-oriented, and they experiment with a lot of different sounds. Some people consider this the worst Rush period, while others consider it the best. They're work from Presto, Roll the Bones, and Counterparts is their most recent, and tends to be a bit more pop-oriented (although Presto is one of my faves; I'm pretty sure I'm in the minority with that opinion, though).

I would recommend buying one (or better, all) of their live albums, to get a taste of songs from several different albums, then determine which songs you like and buy the album with that song. If you like one song off an album, buy it and you're almost guaranteed to like others from it, as well. The first Rush album I really listened to a lot was A Show of Hands, and I really liked the song Subdivisions, so I went out and bought Signals, and it is still one of my favorites...likewise with Closer to the Heart; I bought A Farewell to Kings, and Xanadu became one of all-time favorite Rush songs. Hope this helps (and I haven't confused you)...you can check out alt.music.rush to get input from a lot of Rush-heads as well.

And about Queensryche, and what album to buy, I'm gonna have to go with the standard answer and say Operation:Mindcrime. I listened to this album my junior year in high school, and it forced me to do a 180-degree turnaround on my taste in music. Up to that point, I was relatively sheltered in my music-listening, and considered Van Halen as about as hard as I was willing to go. Mindcrime had so much shock value, though, I was nearly blown away by the power of this album, both musically and lyrically. The only album that has garnered so much emotional response from me is Images & Words, mainly due to the shock-value associated with finally finding a band that had everything I have ever been looking for in a musical group. I have never heard any of Queensryche's earlier work, and their last two albums didn't do too much for me, so you might get a better subjective response from a true Queensryche fan.

***AND NOW FOR THE DT CONTENT!!!***

Sorry for all the mindless blabbing, but I always like talking about good bands. 8^) Now my question is regarding Derek Sherinian: Where the hell did this guy come from? I mean, I know he played with Kiss and Alice Cooper, but when I think of Kiss and Alice Cooper, I certainly don't think of keyboards!!! Does anyone have early Kiss or Alice Cooper albums that might give a glimpse of Derek's early work? Is Dream Theater's music and their emphasis on keyboards a complete departure from Derek's experience, or has he done this kind of thing before? Has anyone asked him about this? I'm just curious about somebody who has one of the hardest tasks in the musical industry: replacing a member of Dream Theater. 8^]

ObApology: Sorry for the long post!!

Its funny you should say that because one of my friends who at the time really didnt listen to DT that much, only when he was in my car, said "This is cool song except for the fact that the beginning sounds like the opening to a show like 90210 or Melrose Place. I am proud to admit however that this person is now a convert to the DT way of life. I guess I just pounded it into his head enough that they are awesome.

Greetings and slautations all, I thought that I would throw out a small message to our Aussie friend. Yes there is a DT newsgroup on the usenet titled alt.music.dream-theater. It is not as exciting as the Ytsejam however. Traffic is small and there are posts every once in a while from some dumb shits with subject lines like Dream Theater sucks!!! etc... (Please gods, forgive me for that transgression). I did find out about the Ytsejam at a.m.DT, however. It did prove to be worthwhile to me. <s> By the by, since I've been reading the wonderful reviews of the Subconscious CD I wish to send out an anticipatory (my mail hasn't arrived yet, hopehopehope!) congratulatory expletive to Mike Bahr. Big fuckin' kudos to you!

Actuallt, I believe that the reason that they gave is that Derik didnt have enough time to learn it... Which makes sense... it is a keyboard heavy song...

    Phoenix and Denver 'jammers,

I would like your help. I have recently been made to very good job offers in both Phoenix and Denver. The problem is that I can only choose one. The offers are in really close competition.

So if you can describe the local music scene, such as bars, clubs etc. I am not talking about dance clubs, but clubs that cater to heavy/progressive metal and hard/progressive rock. Also let me know of any of your favorite local bands.

    Thanks much,

    Hi Guys and Gals.

I was just reading about 20 ytsejams (It's amazing how easy it is to get behind). Anyway I have a couple of random thoughts.

    1) There has been a discussion about vocalists on this list lateley and I noticed one vocalist missing that I have never heard mentioned on this list (Well, at least since I've been reading it). Anyway, I happen to think that hes pretty good if you like hard rock/metal. I'm talking about Ronnie James Dio... I can already feel the falmes.

Anyway, one or the reasons that I like him because he sounds like he is singing (well, growling) low even when he is sining high. This (I think) is considered to be a very rare and respected qality in vocalists. Yea, I know he's a wanker. Anyone have any opinions? About Dio, not me ... I know I'm a wanker too ;)

    2) This is for BABS. I have a suggestion about the ytsecon (even though I won't be able to attend). Have you considered holding some sort of contest. You could try and get the DT Managment to give away stuff. One of the things you could do is have everyone bring a piece of DT memorabilia and give a prize away for the most obsucrue/wierd piece? Oh well, just a thought.

    3) After reading the DT FAQ I have a few suggestions as to some other questions that might be on it.

    A) Who is Fatez Warning (and why)? B) What is Subconscious. I'm seriouse about this one. Mike has gone through a great deal of effort to product an inspired piece of DT history and deserves to be in the FAQ. C) How do I get a ytsejam T-shirt ;) D) What is the Good-times Virus.

    G.
