    Dear all,

I ordered the I&W tab. from my local Virgin Megastore in Liverpool about a
month ago. Today (Friday 28th) I got a note saying that this book had been
deleted and was therefore no longer available. Does anyone know if this is
    true/false?

If it is true, can I order it from the states?

I can't believe that Warner won't publish this tab in the UK so what't up?

Please write to me and help if you can at all, thanks a lot,

    Rob Chinneck (robchin@liverpool.ac.uk)

I consider this song one of the best off WDADU. I think you kind of
answer your own question when you say that only two people knew what
was going on. It doesn't make sense to play songs that noone knows,
when people don't get into it. That doesn't explain why they played
ACOS, EVE and TLF on their IW tour, those songs wasn't even released
on any albums. Perhaps _Awake_ has brought a lot of new 'fans' (i.e
concert-goers) that just haven't gotten into their earlier stuff.
You know, most people not on this list think IW was their debut!!!

Hi all! I havn't read the list for some weeks so sorry if the following topics have been discussed yet...

    - EUROPOP DAYS FESTIVAL, Freiburg (Germany 12-15 May)

I wonder if any ytsejammer will attend this festival. There will be 100 not-signed bands from over Europe playing in front of music producers, talent scouts etc. etc. Maybe I'll be there to see a friend of mine playing with his band ("Wrong Side" (?) from Italy).

    - DT STUFF

Tele+2 (Italian Sport Channel) sometimes shows a spot announcing the May/ June/July sport events with a "condensed" version of "Take the Time" as music! (about 1 minute). Anyway, this is not the first time that the Italian TV uses DT as soundtrack for their TV commercials: in fact VideoMusic (the Italian music channel) uses the first seconds of "6.00" for the spot of a book show. Quite paradoxically the show is called "Metropolis" :)

P.S. If you have anything to tell me about the EuroPop, just mail me so we won't trash the list with no-DT topics. Filippo macchiet@ghost.dsi.unimi.it

Short article in RAW magazine :

"Dream Theater are rehearsing material for a new EP, due out this summer. It will feature the band's epic, 20-minute track, 'A Change Of Seasons', a live favourite and cult classic with DT fans. The band recently received a 100-page petition from fans via the Dream Theater Internet site, requesting the song to be recorded and released!

"It's unclear whether the rest of the EP will feature live cuts or new studio material, but the band plan to tour the US festival circuit in support of its release."

So it looks like we finally did it!!! :)

Well, shit, I can't say too much for Phoenix except that some half decent bands live here. The club scene is probably much like it is in most cities... there are 20-30 clubs total. not dance clubs, but clubs where rock bands play. Bands who occasionally do extra shows here or start/end concerts here and play rehearsal material here include: Gin Blossoms, Meat Puppets, Megadeth, Lynch Mob/Dokken, Sepultura, Sand Rubies, etc...

Ronnie James Dio is one of the best __METAL__ singers out there. He is not a wanker (not that I would know a wanker if I saw a wanker). He has sung for Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, Black Sabbath (He is great on _Dehumanizer_), as well in the band of the same name, Dio. Dio is a great band in their own right. They are not comparable to DT in the sense that they are really two separate music styles/genres and thus shouldn't be compared, but both bands are really hot...**DT CONTENT** :)

I don't know what a falm is <g> but let me put in a big 'hell yes' for Ronnie James Dio. I have heard from bunches of 'straight' metal fans out there, and know that you and I are not alone in liking Dio! > Anyway, one or the reasons that I like him because he sounds like he > is singing (well, growling) low even when he is sining high. > This (I think) is considered to be a very rare and respected > qality in vocalists. Well, I can't speak for you <g>, but Dio sure as hell isn't a wanker! Not only can the guy sing, he consistantly comes up with great imagery and great themes in his lyrics. Can I get a big 'whoa Dio' from all the Dio fans out there? :) (OK, OK... I admit it, I occasionally watch 'Married, With Children... Im so ashamed! :) ).

To Andrew Miller: Here's what I can remember about the setlist...

Metropolis Part 1, Under A Glass Moon, A Fortune In Lies, Surrounded, To Live Forever (w/extended guitar solo in 3/4 time that I have never heard done at any other show), Take The Time, Drum Solo, Nothing Is Sacred (formerly Status Seeker), Wait For Sleep, Another Day, Pull Me Under, Learning To Live.

"Yeah, backstage they asked us, "you guys wanna cancel? There's a storm blowin' in." We said FUCK THAT." --James LaBrie

This was the show at which I hesitated for three seconds before diving over chairs to grab one of Petrucci's picks that I saw hit the ground. Someone else got it, and to this day I have never again hesitated in a move-or-lose situation such as that...

"Seize the day, I heard him say..."

To Dr. Mosh: Me me me! I read every single LINE!!! (what with all these new faces popping up suddenly, I can't just skip over them...)

To The Ones Who Help To Name The Best Queensryche Album: My vote would also be "Operation: Mindcrime." It's a wonderfully put-together album, with a theme behind it, making all the songs part of a storyline. Plus, there's a female vocalist that sounds a lot like Geoff Tate, and in fact is the only woman I have ever heard who sings in that style...

"Empire" isn't bad if you like heavier stuff. There's no running theme, however, but they do touch on themes of past albums. "Promised Land" isn't bad if you like softer stuff. All in all I'd say this one is their lightest album yet. Good songwriting, great production, but lacking in bite.

p.s. when is Mike Portnoy gonna do his drum solo with his kit suspended from the ceiling with huge bungee cords so he can do his solo bouncing around the arena???

Hi, I'm catching up on quite a few subjects as usual:

#1: Yep, I read almost every darn message, almost! I definately spend too much time with this, that's for sure!

#2: Is SUBCONSCIOUS that hard to spell? English is not my mother-tongue, or my mother's tongue (Spinal Tap-reference: see if anyone got that :-)) but I don't have a problem with that name, though my English sux from time to time! BTW, I'm eagerly awaiting my copy, how many have you done yet Mike? And yes, a VERY big thank you to Mike for doing this. And what's next? 'When Dream And LaBrie Unite'? I guess if that happens, that will happen sometime in the fall, am I right?

#3: I remember reading something about PMU being awarded some kind of prize in 1992. It was something like: 'Metal song of the decade', I know I've heard this somewhere, or is it a hoax?

#4: Like some other people here on the list, I would like DT to relax a little more on stage, jam, do improvised solos, fool around. But those days are probably gone now, now that they attract large audiences. They wan't to give every audience an equal, consistant show, and I think that's a bit boring. I don't mind seeing a 'bad' show if it's different. I agree that some jams do go nowhere, bu DT should be able to pull that off. There are parts that could be extended alot. I will go listen to my CDs and maybe give you some suggestions.

..as for recommendations for other bands:

King Crimson: - Red (1974) - Discipline (1981) - Thrak (1995) or one/both of the two bix box-sets that exists

    Rush: - 2112 (1976) - Hemispheres (1978) - Moving Pictures (1981) - Counterparts (1993) ...actually one of their best IMO

Queensryche: - Operation: Mindcrime (1988) - Empire (1990) - Promised Land (1994) ...yes, I love this one! or even better, go see them at one of their shows on the current tour, they are totally amazing!

    That's All!

    /Mats

I was just watching the video for the Japanesse pay-per0view show and it looked like some of the people in the audience had some type of tour book. It had the album cover on the front and it said World Tour or something. Does anyone know what this is or where I could get one?

The video is really cool. I'm sure if my copy were a few generations higher, it would be about as good as LiT. The sound and picture are pretty good but the actual mix isn't that great. John M is a bit too loud and his sound is kinda sloppy. Not that his playing is sloppy, but the actual sound the guitar is making is sloppy. The best way I can describe it is if you were to mic a pot of spagetti while you were stering it.

James cracks quite a bit. Everyone else seems to have a very good night. Derik (Derrick, Derrik, Derick?) really rips!! The piano solo in TtT is awesome as well as the instrumental after LSOaD, its very ending-solo-on-To-Live-Forever-from-Live-in_Tokyo-video- ish. (wow thats a long word, kinda like dirtyfishydishcloth. :) )

Anyone know what the Japanese people are saying during the begining and during the interview?

To Hairball and anyone else listening-

When you mentioned the Beatles influence on Saigon Kick, one song came to mind "My Life". WHile the choruses are very full, the verses almost have a tinny quality. KInda kewl.

Another Note- In reference to the whole debate on the format of erotomania, I am asking one of the professors here where I work (Rutgers Univ.) to analyze the song. He doesn't normally listen to rock music, so I think this will give an objective viewpoint. Who knows, maybe he'll be converted to a 'jammer too.

The best time to listen to it is in your car at night in the rain ;). I haven't even seen DT live. I blew the last three years studying classical and didn't buy or really listen to any new rock in that time.

    Steven,

Don't feel bad about forgetting, I looked it up in my "Harvard Brief Dictionary of Music" :). I can't think of any instrumental "rock" that's written in a classical structure style. I'd be interested to hear it but I think it would be wierd. Besides, it's _19_95. Not too many contemporary composers write in that style except when they're learning to compose and even then things get a little away from strict classical period style. Without enough training and knowledge, it would be easy to fall into a theme and variation which wouldn't be too interesting (not implying anything about DT).

Petrucci wrote a Symphony!! And it's Opus FIVE? What else has he published? Who's recorded it? Where can I get it? BTW, the Opus indicates the work of a composer so this would be Petrucci's fifth composition. If more than one work is published at a time it gets numbers like Op.1 No. 2.

    Ahoy, jammers!

I'm doing a survey/research project for a class on rock fans and beer. If anyone here could e-mail me personally with your favorite kind of beer and why, and whatever else you might care to add on the subject of barley soda, I would greatly apprecitate it. Thank you for your time, and now back to your regularly scheduled DT digest! DO NOT POST RESPONSES TO THIS LIST!!! Greets all, I figured I'd throw in some comments on where to start with Queensryche's albums. I have to agree that Mindcrime is the place to start. Mindcrimw is a brilliant album, IMHO one of the best albums to come out of the 80's. This is truly 'ryche at their finest. However i think that Empire is the most accessible of their music. Promised Land is cool (I for one wasn't disappointed by it) but it's very differnt from their past work, it has more of a Pink Floyd sound to it. If your into progressive i think that Rage For Order is Queensryche's most progresive to date. It's just plain weird at times. Their older stuff like Warning and the EP are cool but its best to start with them last as they have an "80's" sound to them. So basicaly Mindcrime or Empire are good starting places where 'ryche is concerned. And now for some DT content: what's the total running time for Sunconcious? I imagine it's got to be pretty long with ACOS on it. later all, Kevitch

I'd really have to hear it to believe it to hear James sing falsetto. A while ago someone said that he was doing the end of The Killing Hand in falsetto, but he's not; that's all in his head voice. James has remarkable ability to "sing through the break" as voice teachers put it. I've been experimenting w/ my break points lately, and I've found that as long as you use enough air you can get the sound out in head, or even chest voice. A singer with as much training as James should be able to sing most every note in every register. You can hear the amount of air James is pushing at the end of that song. If indeed he was in falsetto there would be not only a timbral change in his voice, but it would be light and effortless, as such is the quality of the falsetto. I think a lot of listeners of rock music are used to listening to _Forced_tenor, like Geoff Tate, Jeff Scott Soto and other examples I can't even think of that would be better. :) They're singing all these "tenor" notes but these men are Baritones, and there is a quality that will come out in a baritone voice when it is pushed that gives it that full sound. When people don't hear this, they assume that the singer is in fasetto, and <pardon the pun> that is false. James is a real Tenor. When Charlie sings that part, he is not in falsetto either, but he's not using his air to capture the intensity of those lines. Now, Winter on the other hand; I'd have to hear it to believe that any man could sing that _without_ using falsetto.

Hello Jammers, Could someone please enlighten me as to the quality of the Majesty demo CD. I saw it in my local music store in Canterbury, but I was a bit short of cash. The CD booklet was in bright pink and had about 8-10 tracks on it, I cant quite remember. It had a rather sad picture of the band with the singer before Charlie Dominici. (again the name escapes me) Anyhow, I wish I bought it now. No more complaining. I`d just like to mention that the DT cover gig at Ronnie Scotts was THE BEST. As to all you non UK jammers....you missed a GOOD TIME! ;-) Cheers

Hope I'm not asking a question that's been asked a million times already, but I'm new to the list so let this one slide. I saw a reference to convention of YTSEJammers and am interested in all the details. You know, where, when, etc. You can send the response to my personal account as opposed to the list so everyone won't have to see the same old info. By the way, anybody out there going to the Q'ryche concert Sunday at the Kiel in St. Louis. Will be sitting in the first section of seats to the left of the stage, four rows up. Stop by and we'll talk. Sorry I can't give my section and seat numbers but the tickets are at home and I'm at work. Steve jacobses@cc.ims.disa.mil

Mike Bahr: A while ago you posted that you had a few extra copies of your Subconcious CD, and I was wondering if I could get a hold of one. Please mail me at pawly@eden.rutgers.edu or, post your info here on the 'jam. Thanks. :)

Also, there's something that's really bugging me. In the IAW tab book, I've noticed that James hits an F# in harmony. I don't have the book on me now, but I wanted to know if anyone can hear it. I've played the section for several people with good ears, and they can't hear it. I can faintly hear it. (I think.) Pawly pawly@eden.rutgers.edu

    Hi 'jammers,

    1. Rock over Germany: DT is coming back to Germany in June to 4 "Rock over Germany" festivals, so far, so good. It's a great chance for them to play for such a huge audience (three stadiums, one airport), but can you imagine DT opening for Elton John, Rod Stewart, Joe Cocker, Eros Ramazzotti, Sheryl Crow ???

    2. (German) Rock Hard magazine: In the latest issue there are parts of a diary of DT's european tour, written by Mike Portnoy! Cool! Interesting insights into what the guys do on tour... (especially Mike, the "party animal": Jagermeister every night...). I don't have it with me right now, but if some of you are interested, I can tell you more, translate some parts... Oh, and the whole thing is gonna be in the next issue of "Dream Head", the German DT fanzine!
