    Hey there jammers -

Just one comment about the Ayn Rand discussion -

I thought the book "Anthem" was the inspiration for the SONG "Anthem".
    Maybe I'm wrong. . . I'm still a rookie with Ms. Rand's books
(Fountainhead, Atlas, Anthem, We the Living). She's definitely a highly
intelligent writer/thinker nonetheless. I guess that's it. Thanks.

    P.S. Anybody read Richard Bach??
P.P.S. (Here's the DT snippet) During the B-section of the video for
"Lie" (I had gotten used to being. . . ), what tunnel are they in? Did
they cause some huge traffic jam filming it??? Just wondering.

I don't believe it! I just got back from my voice lesson where my teacher had
me hit a _High_A_ in chest voice!!! She moved me away so that I couldn't see
the piano keys or the hammers so that I wouldn't know how high I actually was.
I have a tendency to look at the keys and panic if I get anywhere near an E.
This may not be impressive to other tenors, but when you're a bass baritone
like me, well, it's something special!

    hey...
On what albums to get into Queensryche with, I think that _Operation:
Mindcrime_ is an awesome choice, just because it is such a strong album.
One of the greatest by anyone ever. For me, however, it took _Empire_.
_Empire_ was more like the other stuff i was into at the time, it is more
pop-ish, but it still is incredible. Early Queensryche is probably
easiest to get into in backwards chronological order, unless you have
never heard anything at all by them. I am not that familiar with the
first 2, but they are definatly good. Queensryche progr... [maybe i
should use a different word than that :)] changes so much album to album
that if you are used to something like _Empire_, even _Rage for Order_
(the one before O:M) will sound weird.
Others probably can_help/have_helped you out better than i could so i
will go on with my regularly scheduled topic
My roommate is a big Tori Amos fan, and I let him hear DT do _Winter_.
he asked if DT hated Tori. I just thought that that was funny. I also let
a real big Beatles fan hear DT's cover of _Golden Slumbers/Carry That
Weight/The End_, he said that it was in the area of tribute/straight
regurgitation. He did say that he like what DT did with the guitars
though. Both covers, BTW are on mike's _Subconsious_... (AZ rules!)
This kinda made me think about covers. As did the newest Led Zeppelin
tribute album, whatever it is called (it is even harder to spell than
subconshous! :), and seeing _Are You Expierinced?_ by Devo last night.
Straight covers, while many are good, arent really all that exciting.
Yeah, I love DT's covers I have heard, but the ones that I have heard
havnt been all that... well, risky. Devo's Hendrix cover mentioned above
definatly can be considered risky. They (almost?) make it a Devo song.
Granted, that may not be good unless you like Devo, but otherwise the
point seems to be lacking a little. I would think that adapting a song
more to your style would be more of a tribute, and more fun, but I have
never been in a band so I really dont know. My favorite album is _88_,
a live album by the Seventy Sevens. On it, they cover _Over Under Sideways
Down_ by the Yardbirds (pretty straight, I think), but the best part of
the album is when they do their own songs in new ways. The last three
songs total 35 minutes [to most people that would seem really long :)]
while the studio versions total about 15. They have just cool blues jams
and, in one song, they have a drum solo, a cover of _Baby Please Don't
Go_ (Them) and a song I dont know the name of by Rick Nelson (I think).
Just the changing/redoing of their old stuff is awesome. Before you get
too excited, Bill Bruford was never in the 77s :) They are a
bluesy-alternative/ex-pop/Christian band, and not Progressive. They are,
however, my favs. (DT is #2 in case anyone is counting).
SO basically, my quesion is this, What do you like in covers? [meaning
song covers :)] Do you like the more straight-ahead tribute like covers,
    or more daring stuff?
My "ect..." is has become a bit too long, so yeah, I read all of the
Ytsejams, except sometimes for the most technical stuff [ie Hairball and
others :)] skimming may be a bit more accurate 'cause i just get lost.
Oh well, it still is cool to have it... I too can pretend I know
Something! :) Bye... (on the same line to save space)

I've been doing some more thinking again on some WDADU stuff...

Specifically, it's about "The Killing Hand" and "The Ones Who Help To Set The
Sun". Contrary to a thread that's going around now, "TOWHTSTS", IMO it's the
weakest track on the album. I've got two main gripes about it.

First, in Dominici's performance on TKH, he sings the words, "What I have
lear-rrrrned" Now, I'm no vocalist, but from what I've overheard in my life,
isn't it somewhat common knowledge to NOT sing out the "rrrrrrr" sound. Rather,
he should hold out the "eeeee" vowel sound. That way, he's not holding back his
sound by contorting it into a "rrrrr" sound. When holding a note, isn't it
better to choose a vowel rather than a consonent? (Of course there are
exceptions to everything, but doesn't this hold true in this case?) To see what
I mean, listen to 7:04 of The Killing Hand. It's just not strong enough,
Chuck... (The falsetto shortly after doesn't do anything for me either...)

Next, I've got a gripe against the guitar and keys on TOWHTSTS. During the
actual singing of the words, "The... Ones who help to set the sun" (at 5:26 on
the track and more thereafter...) I can see DT trying to accomplish a nice, full
chord progression. Now again, I'm not into tremendous accuracy in my
statements here, but it seems that it's just Charlie who's doing this
progression. Kev. and Petrucci just sit there and do some kind of weak
background stuff. IMO, Charlie just isn't convincing in it. I think it would
help if maybe Kev and Petrucci would help him along with it and provide
something a little more substantial behind Chuck, causing the audience to
think, "Wow! Cool chord progression" rather than "What the hell was Chucky D.
    thinking when he sang THAT?"

Bitch bitch bitch. Sorry if this DT content isn't "praise" content. They're
not perfect ya know! (Though the IaW and Awake version of DT could have a
    strong case!!!)

Did I mention that DT rules???

I'm not familiar with the song Anthem, but the book is similar to the
2112 story. In ANTHEM, the character discovered his long lost
singularity, and in 2112 he discovers a guitar. Both stories tell of the
    leaders' control of the collective.

I have. I think he's silly. He takes the *one* idea of his stories way
    too far.

I'm pretty sure it was filmed in Manhattan and that the tunnel goes under
    some hotel in midtown.

I was just watching a video that I got today in the mail from Alfred
Cappello and I discoverd that they used the ending that everybody loves from
IF as the ending to 6:00... I didn't remember anyone else mentioning
this... did they do this in all of Europe, or was that night a different night?

I also didn't remember reading that John P did accoustical solos... which
just came on right now... sounds pretty interesting...

The video quality isn't too bad... but I think that it did lose something
in x-fering it over to NTSC from PAL... but still is worth it... The audio
isn't bad, after PMU & 6:00 (there is something causing my speakers to sound
like theyt are vibrating... but it seems to have gone away around TTT...

A few other things that I noticed is that the Palasesto seems to be HUGE...
well... compared to the places htat I saw them play here... For those of
you in Italy, how big is the Palasesto? THis also allowed them to have a
MUCH bigger light set than for the shows that I saw... the lights looked
alot more impressive than when I saw them...

It also looked like Mike was up to his usual antics, including stopping in
the middle of his drum solo to stand up and take a picture of the crowd... :)

Finally, in reply to Drkhoe's question... I read about everything, except
some of the highly off topic stuff (flames included there)... and some of
the topics that keep on re-occuring...

Looks to me like the tunnel that runs under Park Ave. in Manhattan, from 31st Street to Grand Central. Sorta like an express route to the Station (albeit a short one).

Actually I just drove through it on my way home tonight.

Shawna- I have to agree with you on the Ronnie James Dio message. Although...growing up being a very very big fan of Dio, I do not listen to him much anymore. The "live" Dio tape is great when he sings "Man on a Silver Mountain" WoW. I actually saw and met Ronnie James Dio about 6 months ago here in Kansas City. Being that close to a stage with Dio...I do have to wonder(after looking in his eyes), is the man possessed? It was a great rocking show at a pretty small club here in KC.

DT convention? WHen and WHere? Is there a place/date?

Found: "Mission: Impossible", the live 2 CD set recorded in Japan in August of '93. Set list: Metropolis Mission: Impossible Afterlife Under A Glass Moon Wait For Sleep Surrounded Ytse Jam (including drum solo) Puppies On Acid Take The Time To Live Forever Improvised Jam (Guitar Solo) A Fortune In Lies Another Day Pull Me Under Eve Learning To Live There is a CD shop in the Akihabara district in Tokyo where all the latest consumer hardware is sold that had this and a few other boots. They have one floor out of 5 that specializes in collector type CD's. Other boots from various bands were on the shelf (multiple copies). With the current exchange rate in Japan, they are expensive (the DT disc was 5300 yen @ 83 yen to the dollar, so about $64. Ouch!). Haven't heard it yet but will post a review once I get back to he States next week. BTW, I found Lords of Sound during my last trip to Singapore! There is some redeeming value from having to travel a lot! Regards, Paul (one of the oldest jammers on the list!)

There are indeed some copies of subconscious left.

    Quick notes:

    1. New list to be posted Monday

    2. Had an order for 20 of them cancelled (from Cali) so thats why I have a bunch left even still. This is not counting the earlier extras I had. So there's still 20 _more_ left, even still.

    3. Olov Ringman, please get in touch with me, your mail was mysteriously lost in the vacuum of space, though I had already recorded your CD numbers and packed them for shipment, now I need your address.

    4. Kaoru Kobayashi, or someone who can speak to her, please mail me, I need to know if she's sending the Japan order. I have 40 CDs set aside for it. If she needs more, I can probably do it, if less, thats fine. Remember, all Japanese jammers, she was doing a group order for everyone.

    5. International orders are taking a BIT longer than USA orders for shipment, I'm sorry for this, the reason being that I can mail within the USA every day of the week at the nearby postal station, but I have to drive 16 miles to the post office that takes international mail, thus I only get a chance to go twice a week. So it may take just a *little* longer on average.

Has anyone heard anything about Kevin lately? Specifically I'm wondering if he's found a label yet. I was listening to his demos earlier (with headphones i think for the first time) and was just thinking how much I love the stuff but I'm afraid of wearing down the tape so I don't listen to it nearly as often as I'd like to. These songs really deserve to be on a CD.

Some things I was noticing while listening that I haven't seen anyone comment on yet: Anyone else notice how on "Even the Waves" the pianos shift back and forth from the left ear to the right, giving a rock-the-boat feeling? I love that. He does it on other dongs too, but it's more noticeable and effective on that song. Also, Kevin's always been the master of the pitch bend in my opinion, and on this tape he uses it very subtly but no less effectively. The soft bending piano melodies in Even the Waves, the post chorus synth leads on Normal Words, the quiet, wavering strings that make for a discordant sort of contrast to the bland prettiness of Nora, and of course the classic Kev organ solo at the end of Song for Eric...damn, I love this tape. I could also hear the samples a lot better through headphones, and they really added something to the songs. Especially on Song for Eric. The original is brilliant, but Kevin adds so much to it, and the samples turn it into a cool little story that makes me long for a roadtrip of some kind...sigh.

Finally, "industrial dance?" Uh, try again. Most of this stuff sounds like Tori more than anything else. I'm having a hard time picturing people dancing to it...

I'd say definetly go for either _Red_ or in the _In the Court of the Crimson King_, which are two of their heavier albums. Or try their new one Thrak, which I don't have YET, but have heard it's great!

But King Crimson also improvised ALL the time live and usuaully my comments are... "SHIT... they IMRPOVED that???"

take "Daniel Dust" off The Great Deciever boxed set... perhaps one of the most beautiful violin solos ever. and it's improvised.

and even their worse improvs are great! if you don't have their GD boxed set and you like KC, get it right now because I've heard that they stopped production on it.

    Hey guys and gals!!!

I posted awhile ago about getting the lyrics to ACOS. This is SERIOUS!!! I NEED THE LYRICS BEFORE I EAT MY CAT!

I've noticed that Matt Rydstrom (I hope I spelled that right) has a quote from ACOS is his sig line, so I KNOW there out there!!

If somebody's got them on a home page some where, let me know where and I'll get'em myself.

Mike Bahr... I haven't been able to even THINK about listening to anything else besides the SUB CD. Man, I'm glad I finished my design project before I got it!! In the past week I've listened to ACOS about 45 times (and at 19:11 a listen, I haven't been doing much else). One question, what in the FUCK is going on in the Wanted song. And who is singing, and who are the "chipmunks"? It sounds like one of them had to be Portney!! CAn you tell us about it? I saw one other guy ask about When Dream and James Unite. I know that that's probably the furthest thing from your mind, but do you think that you'll get to it by the end of this year? Not to rush you or anything like that!!!

One more thing. I'm so glad that somebody else likes Light FUse and Get Away! It got flamed on the Dream Theater Survey and I was wondering if anyone else out there liked it. I have to agree with the guy who said that LFAGA and TOWHTSTS are the best songs on WDADU. Killer intros on both!!

    Take it easy kids!!

I only have 13 more days before I'm forced to join the other AOL'ers!
